IMPORTANT DAYS:
World Refugee Day observed on 20 June:
·        World Refugee Day was observed on 20 June 2016.
·        It is observed annually to draw attention to the plight of refugees, celebrate their courage and resilience and renew commitment to solve refugee problems.
·        It also recognises contributions of the refugees made to the countries that host them.
NATIONAL:
Government approves 100% FDI in defence, caviation, pharma under automatic route:
·        Government today approved 100 per cent FDI in a host of sectors including civil aviation, defence, pharma and single brand retail sector under automatic route.
·        Other sectors in which FDI norms have been relaxed include e-commerce in food products, broadcasting carriage services, private security agencies and animal husbandry.
President Pranab Mukherjee to inaugurate Mass Yoga Demonstration:
·        President Pranab Mukherjee will inaugurate a mass Yoga demonstration involving around 1,000 persons at Rashtrapati Bhavan tomorrow.
·        The participants will include officers and staff of President’s Secretariat, their family members, members of Delhi Police and ITBP as well as other residents of the President’s Estate.
·        They will all perform the common protocol finalized by Ministry of AYUSH. The event is being organized in collaboration with Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga.
URJA Mobile app launched to enhance consumer connect with Urban Power Distribution sector:
·        Union Minister of State (IC) for Power, Coal and New and Renewable Energy Piyush Goyal launched the URJA Mobile application.
·        The URJA, which stands for Urban Jyoti Abhiyaan, was launched on the on the side-lines of Conference of Power Ministers at Cansaulim in South Goa.
Himachal government launches skill development project:
·        The Himachal Pradesh government has launched a  Rs.640 crore project for skill development under which multipurpose training centres will be set up in rural areas.
·        The training, to be given by both government and private associations, will be accessible to all people aged between 16-49, including BPL families.
·        Individuals will be trained in tourism, agriculture and banking sectors, among others
INTERNATIONAL:
India-UAE to form joint parliamentary panel:
·        India will set up a joint panel of parliamentarians with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in a bid to boost bilateral strategic ties.
·        The decision was taken when UAE's Federal National Council Speaker Amal Abdullah Al-Qubaisi met Indian Ambassador TP Seetharam.
·        This panel will aim to facilitate parliamentary visits between both the nations, according to reports.
APPOINTMENTS:
Bipin R Patel appointed as President of Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry:
·        Businessman Bipin R Patel was appointed as the President of Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) for the term 2016-17. He succeeds Rohit J Patel.
·        The decision in this regard was taken during the annual general meeting (AGM) of the GCCI.
·        In another development, Shailesh Patwari was appointed as the Senior Vice-President of the chamber.
Flipkart rehires Tiger Global's Krishnamurthy:
·        Tiger Global's Managing Director Kalyan Krishnamurthy has joined Flipkart in his earlier role as the Head of Categories.
·        Krishnamurthy will directly report to Flipkart's CEO Binny Bansal.
·        During his nearly two-year stint at Flipkart starting in early 2013, Krishnamurthy served as the Head of Categories and the interim Chief Financial Officer.
Italian capital Rome gets 1st ever female Mayor:
·        Italy's capital Rome elected its first ever female Mayor, as Virginia Raggi, from the Five Star Movement party, won 67% of the vote against the Democratic Party’s (PD) Roberto Giachetti.
·        The Five Star Movement also won Mayoral elections in Turin, with another female candidate, Chiara Appendino, winning 55% of the vote.
·        The results purportedly signify discontent with mainstream political parties.
AWARDS AND HONORS:
Panama Papers wins Investigation of the Year:
·        The 'Panama Papers' investigation, which revealed details of offshore entities owned by people across the world, won the Investigation of the Year award 2016, presented at the Global Editors Network summit in Vienna.
·        The investigation was a collaboration of over 100 media organisations, with Indian Express being the Indian partner. 'Panama Papers' was the biggest ever data leak since 2015.
106-yr-old becomes oldest Olympic torchbearer:

·        Aida Gemanque, known as Grandma Iaià, became the oldest Olympic torchbearer at 106, when she lit the cauldron in the Brazilian city, Macapa.
·        She broke 101-yr-old Alexander Kaptarenko’s record, who carried the torch at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.
·        Notably, Grandma Iaià holds a Guinness record for being the oldest skydiver at 103, giving her the nickname ‘Extreme Granny’.
BUSINESS AND ECONOMY:
India most open economy in world for FDI:
·        The government today said India is the most open economy in the world for FDI, while announcing several relaxations in the overseas investment norms in sectors like civil aviation, defence and pharmaceuticals.
·        "Measures undertaken by the government have resulted in increased FDI inflows at $55.46 billion in 2015-16, as against $36.04 billion during the financial year 2013-14," it said.
Government to set up ETF to meet disinvestment target:
·        The government has said it will set up a new exchange traded fund (ETF) to sell its shares in public sector undertakings (PSUs) and other private companies, as part of its Rs.56,500 crore disinvestment target for the 2016-17 fiscal.
·        ETFs are investment vehicles which hold assets like stocks or bonds and are traded on a stock exchange
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:
ISRO begins countdown to launch record 20 satellites on Wednesday:
·        The 48-hour long countdown for Wednesday's launch of record 20 satellites by ISRO from Sriharikota began at 9:26 this morning.
·        Workhorse PSLV C34 will carry the satellites and inject them into the 505 km sun synchronous orbit one after the other. 
·        The 20 satellites include Cartosat-2 Series remote sensing payload of India for earth observation purposes, two Indian students satellites and 17 other micro and nano satellites of foreign customers from US, Canada, Germany and Indonesia.
NASA unveils X-57 Hybrid Electric Research Plane:
·        The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) unveiled the iconic X-57 Hybrid Electric Research Plane nicknamed as Maxwell.
·        The plane is fixed with 14 electric motors turning propellers and all of them are integrated into a uniquely-designed wing. NASA will use this plane to test new propulsion technology.
World's 1st magnetic refrigerator launched:
·        French firm Cooltech Applications has launched what it claims as the world's first commercially available magnetic refrigeration system.
·        It achieves refrigeration by passing a water coolant through magnetocaloric materials undergoing repeated magnetization-demagnetization cycles.
·        The system works without any refrigerant gas, making it more environmentally efficient than conventional refrigerators.
Microsoft funds anti-terrorism software:
·        Microsoft has funded a software, developed by Dartmouth College professor Hany Farid, that can find and eliminate online extremist content.
·        The software, which was unveiled on Friday, analyses online images, videos and audio files, and matches it to a database of known extremist content.
·        If it matches, social media and technology companies can flag such content or remove it altogether.
Blue Origin completes its 4th successful landing:
·        Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos' private spaceflight company, Blue Origin successfully launched and landed its New Shepard reusable rocket for a fourth time.
·        The company also successfully tested the redundancy of its capsule's parachute system by intentionally failing one of the chutes.
·        Notably, it was the first-ever time that the company live-streamed one of its launches.
SPORTS:
Sri Lankan pacer Shaminda Eranga suspended by ICC for illegal action:
·        International Cricket Council (ICC) suspended Sri Lanka’s fast bowler Shaminda Eranga from bowling. He was suspended after an assessment of his bowling action.
·        The assessment revealed that all deliveries exceeded the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted under the regulations.
Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg won 2016 Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe:
·        Nico Rosberg of Germany won the European Grand Prix Formula 1 championship in Baku, Azerbaijan.
·        To win the title, the Mercedes driver overcame Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel of Germany in the final race.
·        In this championship, Rosberg completed second career Grand Slam. Prior to him, only Lewis Hamilton, Mika Hakkinen, Jack Brabham and Juan Manuel Fangio could able to achieve this rare feat.
India won Silver medal at Archery World Cup in Antalya:
·        The Indian mixed recurve team of Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das won silver at the Archery World Cup in Antalya, Turkey.
·        In the final clash at Konyaalti Beach Park, the Indian team lost to South Korea 1-5.
·        Indian team trailed 0-2 in the first set against the top-seed Korean pair of Choi Misun and Ku Bonchan and went down 1-5 in the final.
Cleveland Cavaliers win NBA championship title:
·        Cleveland Cavaliers today defeated defending champions Golden State Warriors 93-89 in the seventh game of the NBA finals to win the championship title for the first time in the franchise history.
·        The Cavaliers also became the first team in finals' history to come back from a 3-1 deficit. Meanwhile, LeBron James was named the Most Valuable Player of the finals
OBITUARY:
Renowned Educationalist Jeppiaar passes away:
·        Jeppiaar, a renowned politician-turned-educationalist and founder of Jeppiaar Educational Trust, passed away following a brief illness at Chennai. He was 85.
·        He was originally named as Jesadimai Pangiraj. He was a pioneer in the setting up of private engineering institutions in Tamil Nadu and was the founder chancellor of Sathyabama University.
