NATIONAL:
India and Morocco launch Chamber of Commerce and Industry:
·        India and Morocco launched the India-Morocco Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IMCCI) in Rabat, Morocco.
·        The chamber was jointly launched by visiting Vice President Hamid Ansari and Moroccan Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane.
·        The IMCCI was launched to accelerate the pace of economic development between the two nations.
·        Besides, India and Morocco have concluded five Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) covering fields as diverse as water resources, television broadcasting, institutional cooperation and cultural and educational exchanges, further providing venues for enhanced cooperation.
India and World Bank sign agreement to improve efficiency and attractiveness of City Bus Services:
·        The Government of India and the World Bank signed a 9.2 million US dollar grant agreement under the World Bank-Global Environment Facility (GEF) Programme for the Efficient and Sustainable City Bus Service Project.
·        The project aims at improving the efficiency and attractiveness of bus services in select Indian cities.
·        The project will complement the Government of India’s Bus Funding Scheme launched to promote public transport by supporting cities to modernize their bus services.
·        Demonstration cities where the various initiatives for improving city bus services will be undertaken are Mira Bhayandar in Maharashtra, Chandigarh, Jaipur, and Bhopal.
Union Cabinet approves MoU between DGCA and French Civil Aviation Authority:
·        The Union Cabinet gave its ex-post facto approval to the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Directorate General of Civil Aviation of India (DGCA) and the French Civil Aviation Authority.
·        The MoU was signed to implement Technical Cooperation Programme for promotion and implementation of Standards and Recommended Practices of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Defence Minister to travel to Singapore; hold talks on Rafale jets:
·        Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar will travel to Singapore to take part in the crucial Shangri-La Dialogue, an inter-governmental security forum.
·        He will also hold talks with his French counterpart Jean Yves Le Drian, with both countries looking at closing the deal for 36 Rafale fighter jets soon.
·        The Shangri-La Dialogue hosted annually by independent think-tank International Institute for Strategic Studies, is being held from June 3-5. It is attended by defence ministers and military chiefs of 28 Asia-Pacific countries besides those of other countries.
·        The issues pertaining to Rafale jets deal such as consensus on actions to be taken in case of a material breach, stringent liability clause and guarantee by the French side are likely to be discussed when the two leaders meet.
India gifts 2,000 bicycles to poor dalit girls in Nepal:
·        India has gifted 2,000 bicycles to poor dalit girls in Nepal to encourage them to enroll in schools and enhance the literacy rate among them.
·        The Indian Embassy said in a statement, bicycles were given to the girls studying in different government schools in Nepal.
·        The gifting of bicycles to poor dalit girl students programme was conceived to enhance the literacy rate among girls in Nepal and also to encourage girls from poor and dalit families to enroll in schools.
·        The literacy rate in various districts of Terai is low and the region requires special attention in the field of basic education, community awareness and women empowerment, the statement said.
·        Apart from this, the Government of India has been extending assistance to various programmes for improvement of education and health services in all districts of Nepal, like gifting 59 ambulances.
National Film Archive of India (NFAI) acquires film songbooks:
·        The National Film Archive of India yesterday acquired 1,790 songbooks of Hindi films belonging to every decade of the country's cinematic heritage.
·        Songbooks starting from 1934 to 2012 acquired by NFAI represent the journey of Hindi film industry in the country.
·        These booklets give a peek into a long forgotten era and are also an indicator of changing printing technology as did the artwork.
·        It is notable that these songbooks contain not only the full lyrics of songs in multiple languages, but are also a treasure trove of information about the film itself, including the cast, credits and storyline.
·        NFAI has appealed to the public to come forward with rare, archival material that will help in conserving India's heritage, under the umbrella project of National Film Heritage Mission.
Andhra Pradesh government to observe Navanirmana Week to commemorate state's new formation day:
·        The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to observe Navanirmana Week to commemorate the state's new formation day, from 2nd to 8th June, 2016.
·        The programme of the Navanirmana Week will be launched by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu.
·        The Andhra Pradesh government has notified that every citizen of the state should participate in Navanirmana Deeksha (pledge) - whether they are on the road, home, college and factory or in a farm today, the state formation day.
·        Andhra Pradesh in its present form came into existence on 2nd June 2014 following the bifurcation of erstwhile AP.
·        The pledge-taking ritual will be observed every year from this year onwards.
INTERNATIONAL:
India, USA ink deal to exchange terrorist info
·        India and the USA signed an agreement to exchange terrorist screening information.
·        The agreement allows both the countries to access information through the designated contact points, subject to domestic laws and regulations.
·        The agreement was signed by the Union Home Secretary, Rajiv Mehrishi and the Ambassador of USA to India, Richard Verma.
India, Qatar MoU on tourism approved by Union Cabinet:
·        The Union Cabinet gave its approval for signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Qatar for strengthening cooperation in the field of Tourism.
The main objectives of the MoU are:
·        It will create favourable conditions for long-term co-operation in the field of tourism for the mutual benefits.
·        It will help in exchange of expertise, publications, information/data and statistics related to tourism.
·        It will encourage cooperation through the exchange of programmes, propaganda and advertising materials, publications, films, promotion and marketing of their tourism products via media etc.
·        It will help in exchange visits of tour operators/media/opinion makers for promotion of two way tourism.
·        It will help in encouraging the co-operation between tourism sectors, tour operators, travel agents and other tourism private sector's firms and bureaus in the two countries.
·        It will also help in encouraging public and the private sectors to invest in tourism.
Canada to enforce plain cigarette packaging:
·        Canada will make the plain packaging of cigarettes compulsory in an effort to reduce smoking, said the Canadian health minister.
·        Five million of the 36 million inhabitants of the country use tobacco products, and Canada presently mandates warning labels on cigarette packets.
·        Britain and Australia had earlier made plain packaging of cigarettes compulsory.
France opens its first wine theme park:
·        The country's first wine theme park 'La Cité du Vin' was inaugurated in France.
·        Spread across 10 levels, it has been constructed in the shape of a wine glass and offers interactive experiences for guests. Guided tours of twenty theme areas and a wine-tasting for $22 per person will be part of the experience at the new park.
APPOINTMENTS:
Rahul Johri assumes charge as first ever CEO of BCCI:
·        Rahul Johri assumed charge as first ever chief executive officer (CEO) of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Mumbai.
·        He was appointed on the recommendation of the Justice Lodha Committee.
·        He will be report to the BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke and will be based at headquarters of BCCI in Mumbai.
·        He will be responsible for “smooth functioning of operations, stakeholder management and building robust strategies for promoting of sport.
BOOKS AND AUTHORS:
The Unseen Indira Gandhi authored by Dr KP Mathur released
·        The Unseen Indira Gandhi: Dr KP Mathur, A new book The Unseen Indira Gandhi authored by Dr KP Mathur was released in May 2016.
·        Dr KP Mathur was personal physician of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for nearly 20 years till her assassination in 1984. 
·        The Book was published by Konark Publishers.
·        The book provides some interesting peeps into the responses of Mrs Gandhi’s to challenges both personal and political.
·        The foreword of the book was written by her granddaughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
·        The 151-page book describes that Mrs Gandhi was very tense, a bit confused and not sure of herself in early years of her power in 1966.
BANKING:
ICICI Bank cuts lending rate by 0.05%:
·        Country's largest private sector lender ICICI Bank has cut its marginal cost of funds-based lending rate (MCLR) by 0.05 per cent, to take it at par with the rates offered by SBI and HDFC Bank.
·        This will help reduce the rate of interest to new borrowers.
·        Under the new rate structure effective from yesterday, the bank will give out overnight loans to new borrowers at 8.95 per cent, while the one-year MCLR, to which its housing loans are linked, now comes down to 9.15 per cent.
·        RBI introduced the MCLR system from April 1 this year for faster transmission of its policy actions by the lenders.
India Post gets government nod to set up payments bank:
·        The Union Cabinet gave its approval to India Post to set up payments bank.
·        The government will set up 650 branches of the postal bank across the country by September 2017, Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
·        Payments bank, aimed at improving financial inclusion, allows customers to transfer money or remittances using a mobile phone

Punjab teenager earns scholarship to train in US:
·        Fifteen-year-old basketball player Prince Pal Singh has earned a three-year $75,000 scholarship to study in Ohio, USA.
·        The 7-feet tall player was selected through an open trial conducted by Players1st Sports Management in association with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre.
·        This creates an opportunity for Prince to qualify for NCAA, a stepping stone for getting selected for NBA.
Sachin Tendulkar's name to be used in Kerala Government's Anti-Drug Campaign:
·        Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the cricket icon has given his consent to use his name to strengthen the campaign against liquor and drug abuse in the state.
·        This agreement was reached when Tendulkar along with three other co-owners of the Kerala Blasters Football Club (KBFC) met Vijayan at the state secretariat.
·        The other co-owners of KBFC are actor-turned politician Chiranjeevi, actor Akkineni Nagarjuna and Prasad.
·        Besides, KBFC also agreed to set up a residential Football Academy to train young talents in the state.
BUSINESS AND ECONOMY:
Direct Tax Dispute Resolution Scheme 2016 comes into force:
·        The Direct Tax Dispute Resolution Scheme 2016 came into effect on 1 June 2016. The scheme was incorporated as Chapter X of the Finance Act, 2016.
·        The declarations under this Scheme may be made on or before the 31 December 2016 in respect of tax arrears & specified tax.
TRAI launches mobile app for subscribers to register complaints against pesky calls, SMSes:
·        The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has launched a mobile application for telecom subscribers to register their complaints against pesky calls and SMSes to tighten the noose on telemarketers.
·        TRAI Chairman R S Sharma said, the new mobile app will help people in easily filing complaints and help the authority in monitoring such activities.
·        He said, it will ease filing of complaints and also help us in monitoring action taken by telecom operators on complaints.
·        The DND (do not disturb) services mobile app is an easy alternative for filing pesky calls and SMS complaints. Earlier, subscribers had option of filing complaint by forwarding SMS to 1909 which they received from telemarketers and mention mobile number from which they have received it along with date of receiving.
India's growth to remain 'strong';to hover around 7.5%: OECD
·        Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, OECD, has said that India is projected to see a growth of around 7.5 per cent in the current fiscal even as the world economic growth is stuck in a low-growth trap.
·        OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurria said Weak trade growth, sluggish investment, subdued wages and slower activity in key emerging markets will all contribute to modest global GDP growth of 3 per cent in 2016.
·        OECD further said improving productivity is essential for India's GDP per capita to catch up with higher-income countries.
Salesforce buys Demandware for $2.8 billion:
·        American cloud computing company Salesforce on Wednesday announced the acquisition of the cloud-based e-commerce services provider Demandware for around $2.8 billion.
·        With this, Salesforce will enter into the e-commerce market with a new business division called 'Commerce Cloud'. Demandware, which raised $88 million in its initial public offering in 2012, is currently valued at $1.87 billion.
SPORTS:
French Open: Sania Mirza enters mixed doubles quarterfinals:
·        At the French Open Tennis, Sania Mirza's entry into the mixed doubles quarterfinals was the only silver lining for India as both Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna lost their respective last eight encounters in the men's doubles yesterday.
·        Second seeded Sania and her Croatian partner Ivan Dodig beat French pair of Alize Cornet and Jonathan Eysseric in a closely-fought second round match.
·        Sania and Dodig will now meet Yung-Jan Chan of Chinese Taipei and veteran Max Mirnyi of Belarus in the quarterfinals.
·        Leander and Martina Hingis are also in the mixed doubles quarterfinals and are pitted against fifth seeds Bruno Soares and Elena Vesnina.
·        In the men's doubles, India's challenge ended as Bopanna and his Romanian partner Florin Mergea, seeded sixth, went down 4-6 4-6 to third seeds Dodig and Marcelo Melo of Brazil.
Sri Lanka seam bowler Nuwan Kulasekara retires from Test cricket:
·        Sri Lanka seam bowler Nuwan Kulasekara announced his retirement from Tests with immediate effect on 1 June 2015. He continues his career in limited over cricket.
·        The 33-year old seamer played 21 Test matches for Sri Lanka and picked up 48 wickets since his debut in April 2005.
·        He played his last Test in June 2014 at Lord's against England.
·        He was predominantly new-ball bowler and was not so effective once the ball lost its shine due to lack of pace.
·        He played 173 ODIs and was ranked as the No. 1 bowler in March 2009.
OBITUARY:
Bollywood actor Razak Khan passes away:
·        Bollywood comic actor Razak Khan passed away after suffering from a heart attack.
·        He was rushed to Holy Family hospital in Bandra, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Razak, who started his acting career with the 1993 film 'Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja', appeared in over 90 films including 'Raja Hindustani', 'Baadshah', 'Partner' and 'Action Jackson'.
