Solution:

1). Number of failed students = { 1/8 × 7200 } = 900

2). The given data is insufficient.

3). Let the age of Ram = x and  Rakesh = y
Then, x/y = 6/11
x= 6y/11
According to the question
(x-4) / (y-4) = 1/2
2x-8 = y-4
2 × (6y/11) – 8 = y-4
12y/11 – y = -4+8
y/11 = 4
y=44yr
Age of Rakesh after 5 yr = 44 + 5 = 49 yr

4). A:B = 7 : 12, B:C= 6 : 5 and C:D = 10:8
à  A : B = 7 : 12
B : C = (6×2) : (5×2) = 12 : 10
C : D = 10 : 8
à A : B : C : D = 7 : 12 : 10 : 8
à A’s share = 7/37

5). The given data is insufficient

6). Let the two numbers be 4x and 5x
Then (4x + 8) / (5x + 8)  = 8/9
à 36x + 72 = 40x + 64
à  4x = 8 à x= 2
à The numbers are (4×2) and (5×2) i.e 8 and 10

7). Let the two numbers be 7x and 9x
Then (7x-k) / (9x-k) = 2/3
Here, there are two variables and only one equation
Hence the given data is insufficient.

8). (6+K) : (13+K) :: (30+K) : (58 +K)
à  (6+k)(58+k) = (13+k) (30+k)
à K2 + 64k + 348 = k2 + 43k + 390
à 21k = 42 è k=2
à Thus 2 must be added

9).

10). (S+6)/(T+6) = 6/7
7S + 42 = 6T + 36
7S – 6T = 36 – 42
7 × (4T/5) – 6T = -6
(28T – 30T) / 5 =-6
à -2T = - 30
T = 15 then
S = 4T/5 = (4×15)/5 = 12
Difference = 15 – 12 = 3yr
