NATIONAL:
Vice President inaugurates the 4th phase of the Vidyadhanam project in Kochi
·        Vice President of India M. Hamid Ansari inaugurated the 4th phase of the Vidyadhanam project at Kochi, Ernakulam in Kerala on August 31, 2016.
·        The project provides financial incentive and scholarship to bright students from government and aided schools, in addition to encouraging cultivation of life skills, such as thrift and financial inclusion.
·        While inaugurating the project Vice President Ansari said that, there is a need to ensuring not only increase in government investments in education, but also to maintaining the funding levels of other social welfare schemes to make sure that falling incomes of parents do not impact the educational prospects of in-school children.
Sushma Swaraj leading a 12-member delegation to Rome to attend the canonisation ceremony of Mother Teresa
·        A 12-member delegation led by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has left for Rome to attend the canonisation ceremony of Mother Teresa to be held on Sunday. During her three-day visit, Ms Swaraj is also expected to hold bilateral talks with her Italian counterpart Paolo Gentiloni.
·        It will be the first high-level contact between the two countries after the United Nations Tribunal's verdict of the return of Italian marines charged with murdering two Indian fishermen off Kerala coast in 2012.
Sidhu launches Awaaz-e-Punjab
·        Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu and Akali Dal MLA Pargat Singh, along with some other leaders on Friday announced the launch of a political front, Awaaz-e-Punjab.
·        The formal announcement of the modalities of the new party would be made in the next few days, However, the leaders announced the birth of the political front — online through a poster that pictured Mr. Sidhu, Mr. Singh and the Bains brothers — Balwinder Singh Bains and Simarjit Singh Bains, who are Ludhiana-based Independent MLAs.
PM announces Rs 200 crore package to engage J&K youth in sports
·        With a view to engage youth of Jammu & Kashmir in constructive sporting activities, a special package of Rs 200 crore has been announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
·        The package provides for construction of indoor sporting halls in all districts of the State with a view to provide playing facilities to youth during long winter in the state.
·        For immediate engagement of youth in the state in sporting activities, a special programme 'Sports for AII' is being implemented through J&K State Sports Council which provides for village level competitions and development of popular sports, such as, football etc.
TMC gets national party status
·        The Election Commission, EC, has granted national party status to All India Trinamool Congress (TMC). The party led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has fulfilled the conditions required to become a national party after getting status of state party in four states.
·        As per the provisions, to become a national party, a political outfit needs to win at least two per cent of the total seats in the Lok Sabha from at least three different states or get at least six percent votes in four states in addition to four Lok Sabha seats, or recognised as a state party in four states.
·        The TMC is ruling the West Bengal and have presence in Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh and Tripura. Presently, BJP, Congress, BSP, NCP, CPI and CPM are recognized as national parties in the country.
INTERNATIONAL:
China ratifies Paris global climate agreement
·        China has ratified the Paris global climate agreement, state news agency Xinhua reports. China and the US are expected to announce ratification jointly before or at the weekend's G20 Hangzhou Summit.
·        In a landmark deal struck in December, countries agreed to cut carbon emissions enough to keep the global average rise in temperatures below 2C.China is the world's largest emitter of harmful carbon emissions causing climate change.
·        The Paris deal is the world's first comprehensive climate agreement. It will only come into force legally when it is ratified by countries producing 55 per cent of global carbon emissions.
G-20 Summit to begin in Chinese city of Hangzhou tomorrow to boost global trade growth
·        Two-day G-20 Summit of the world's major economies will start in Chinese city of Hangzhou tomorrow to discuss efforts to reform global economic governance.
·        The theme of the summit is toward an Innovative, Invigorated, Interconnected and Inclusive World Economy.
·        The G-20 represents over 85 percent of the world's economy and two thirds of global population.
India and Vietnam agree to elevate bilateral relations to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership; Sign agreements
·        India and Vietnam have agreed to elevate bilateral relations from Strategic Partnership to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This was announced in a joint press statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc in Hanoi.
·        Mr Modi said that this will provide a new direction, momentum and substance to bilateral relations. He said that common efforts of the two countries will also contribute to stability, security and prosperity of the region.
·        The Prime Minister also announced a line of credit of 500 million US Dollars to Vietnam to facilitate deeper defence cooperation. Mr Modi said that new trade and business opportunities will be tapped to achieve the 15 billion Dollar trade target by 2020.
·        Later speaking at a banquet hosted by his Vietnamese counterpart, Mr Modi said, Vietnam is a strong pillar of India's Act East Policy and bilateral ties are based on strong mutual trust, understanding and convergence of views on various regional and international issues.
Canada’s British Columbia issues masala bonds
·        Canada’s British Columbia has become the first foreign government issuer of masala bonds, with the province successfully raising Rs.5 billion through a rupee-denominated bond on the London Stock Exchange, Canadian Finance Minister Michael de Jong said.
·        The masala bond issuance offers British Columbia a means to become well-positioned to profile our confidence in the outlook for India, and to participate in the internationalization of the rupee and India’s economy.

·        A 12-year-old Jeremy Shuler has just started his first semester at Cornell University.
·        He’s the youngest student on record to attend the Ivy League school.
·        He was reading books in English & Korean by age 2 & studying calculus at 6
·        He passed SATs & Advanced Placement tests at 10, earning college credit in 7 subjects.
·        Cornell is a leading institution of higher learning located in Ithaca, New York.

DCB launches ‘mVisa’, a mobile-based payment solution for retail outlets
·        Private sector DCB Bank has announced the launch of a mobile based payment solution, mVisa, for easier retail payment.
·        The private sector bank said customers can now pay through their smartphones by scanning the unique Quick Response (QR) code at the retail outlet.
·        mVisa, a mobile-based payment solution will make payments at retail outlets much easier. Customers can pay now through their smart phones by scanning the unique Quick Response (QR) code at the retail outlet.
BUSINESS NEWS:
Voonik acqui-hires styling app Dekkoh
·        Voonik Technologies Pvt. Ltd, which operates the fashion app Voonik had acquired styling app Dekkoh for an undisclosed amount.
·        Dekkoh connects over 200 stylists to consumers seeking fashion advice.
·        It allows users to chat with a stylist and buy clothing and accessories that suit them.
·        Voonik also announced the acquisition of three other start-ups —Zohraa, Styl & Picksilk
APPOINTMENTS:
Punit Goenka is new IBF chief
·        Punit Goenka, MD & CEO, Zee Entertainment Enterprises, has been elected as the Indian Broadcasting Foundation’s President.
·        In the 17th AGM of the Indian Broadcasting Foundation, the board also elected Rajat Sharma (Chairman, India TV), NP Singh (CEO, Sony Pictures Network), Sudhanshu Vats (Group CEO, Viacom 18), K Madhavan (MD, Asianet Communications) as Vice-Presidents; and KVL Narayan Rao (Executive Vice-Chairperson, NDTV) as the Treasurer of the Foundation for a year.
K K Aggarwal elected National President of Indian Medical Association
·        Cardiologist K K Aggarwal has been unanimously elected as the National President of the Indian Medical Association for the year 2016-17.
·        Aggarwal is currently the Secretary General of the doctors association.
·        Dr Ravi Wankhedkar from Maharashtra will be the National President for the year 2017-18 and Dr R N Tandon will take over as Honorary Secretary General. The new team will take over on December 28.
·        Indian Medical Association is the only representative, national voluntary organisation of doctors of modern scientific system of medicine, which looks after the interest of doctors as well as the well-being of the community at large.
·        Headquartered in Delhi, it has 29 state/UT branches. IMA has over 2,53,000 doctors as its members through more than 1,650 active local branches spread across the country.
SPORTS NEWS:
Maharashtra bowler makes history to take 10-wicket in an innings
·        Maharashtra cricketer Shrikant Mundhe created history by becoming the first Liverpool Competition Premier League bowler to take 10 wickets in an innings.
·        Nanded-born Mundhe, who currently is plying his trade with Colwyn Bay, destroyed Birkenhead Park's batting on Saturday, emerging with figures of 10-85 in 24.1 overs.
·        Mundhe is the sole man to achieve the feat.
·        Mundhe's unbeaten 44, also the top score in his team, was the icing on the cake as the side scrapped home chasing 168 after been down 126-8 at one point.
·        Sixty years ago, English spinner Jim Laker registered the world's first 10-for (10-53) against Australia at Old Trafford on July 31, 1956.
Zaheer Khan made honorary life member by MCC
·        Former pacer Zaheer Khan has been made an honorary life member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), becoming the 24th Indian cricketer to be bestowed the honour.
·        Zaheer is the second former India international to be elected in recent weeks following Virender Sehwag, who became an Honorary Life Member last month. The list also includes the likes of Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar, who were inducted in previous years.
OBITUARY:  
Noted Assamese poet Nalini Dhar Bhattacharyya dies at 95
·        Noted Assamese poet, literary critic, author and winner of the Sahitya Akademi award Nalinidhar Bhattacharyya passed away in Guwahati early Friday morning.
·        Bhattacharyya, aged 95, was suffering from age-old ailments.
Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov dies
·        Uzbekistan's President Islam Karimov has died after remaining in power for over 25 years, since it gained independence from Soviet Union in 1991. The government confirmed his death Friday, six days after he was taken to hospital with a suspected brain haemorrhage.
·        The funeral of 78-year old leader will be overseen by Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyoyev, seen as his potential successor. Karimov will be buried today in his home city of Samarkand and three days of mourning is being observed.
