QUANTITATIVE APTITUDE
Directions (1 – 5): Each problem contains a question and two statements giving certain data. You have to select the correct answer depending on the sufficiency of the data given in the statements to answer the question.
a) if the question can be answered by statement A alone but not by statement B alone
b) if the question can be answered by statement B alone but not by statement A alone
c) if the question can be answered by either one of the two statements
d) if the question can be answered only if both the statements are taken together
e) if the question cannot be answered even of both the statements are taken together
1). Ramu went non-stop by car from Vijayawada to Bangalore via Hyderabad. The average speed for the entire journey was 40 kmph. What was the average speed from Hyderabad to Bangalore?
B) The average speed from Hyderabad to Bangalore was twice that of the average speed from Vijayawada to Bangalore.

2). The unit price of product P1 is non-increasing and that of product P2 is decreasing. Five years hence, which product will be costlier?
A) Current unit price of P1 is twice that of P2
B) Five years ago, unit price of P2 was twice that of P1

3). How many minutes are there in time period T?
A) T extends from noon to 8 PM
B) T is 4 hours and 48 minutes long.

4). Is x2 = √xy?
A) y = x3
B) x2 + y2 = (x – y)2

5). If x is an integer, and B = x2 + y2, is √B an integer?
A) x2 - y2 = 0
B)  x2–k4 = -y2 for a positive integer k.

Directions (6 – 10): Study the following information carefully and answer the questions:
A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H around a square table in such a way that four of them sit at four corners of the square while four sit in the middle of each of the four sides. The ones who sit at the four corners face the centre while those who sit in the middle of the sides face outside.
Two females sit in the middle of the sides and two at the corners. A sits second to the left of G. G sits in the middle of one of the sides. C sits fourth to the right of his wife and his wife is not an immediate neighbour of A or G. B sits third to right of her husband. B does not sit at any of the corners. Only D sits between B and H. H is the husband of A. E is a male.

6). Which of the following is true with respect to the given seating arrangement?
a) No two males are immediate neighbours of each other
b) G and H are diagonally opposite to each other in the seating arrangement
c) E and D are immediate neighbours of each other
d) F is a male and sits diagonally opposite to E
e) A sits in the centre of one of the sides of the square table

7). Who amongst the following is B’s husband?
a) C
b) G
c) E
d) F
e) Can’t be determined

8). How many people sit between B and C when counted in anti-clockwise direction from B?
a) None
b) One
c) Two
d) Three
e) Four

9). Who amongst the following is the wife of C?
a) D
b) F
c) B
d) G
e) Can’t be determined

10). What is the position of E with respect to C?
a) Immediately to the left
b) Second to the left
c) Third to the right
d) Immediately to the right
e) Second to the right

Solutions:
1). d)
Let S1 and T1 be the speed and time taken to travel from Vijayawada to Hyderabad respectively. And let S2 and T2 be the speed and time taken to travel from Hyderabad to Bangalore respectively.
Average speed = (S1T1 + S2T2)/(T1+T2) = 40kmph
(A) S2 x T2 = 0.31 S1 x T1 and (B) S2 = 2(S1 x S2) = ?
Combining A and B we can get S2

2). e)
P1 is non-increasing => constant or decreasing hence nothing can be said about the price of the product P1 after five years.
Hence, using both the statements also we cannot determine which product will be costilier.

3). b)
From (B), T = 240 + 48 = 288 minutes.
From (A), we don’t know if it is on the same day

4). a)
The given equation is x4 = xy or x3 = y
So (A) is sufficient to answer the question.

5). c)
From (A) x2 = y2 and B = 2x2 => √B = x√2
Since x is an integer, B is not an integer. So (A) alone is sufficient.
From (B) x2 + y2 = k2
So B = k2 which is an integer. So (B) alone is also sufficient.
