First Monday of October: World Habitat Day

i. The World Habitat Day was on 3 October 2016 observed across the world with the theme Housing at the Centre.
The 2016 World Habitat Day campaign aims to raise awareness about the need for affordable housing for all in urban areas, towns and cities.
ii. Focus of the theme: Access to adequate housing is a global challenge growing fast with urbanization. Around one quarter of the world’s urban population continues to live in slums and informal settlements.

Abu Dhabi Crown Prince to be 2017 Republic Day chief guest
i. The Indian government has invited the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to be the next Chief Guest at India’s Republic Day parade of 2017.
ii. This is the first time that a leader of the United Arab Emirates will be honoured with the invitation of being the Chief Guest at India’s Republic Day parade.
iii. The United Arab Emirates has accepted the invitation and the country will be represented by Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, His Highness  Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The impending visit sends out an important message at a time when tensions are escalating between India and Pak

First BRICS Trade Fair in Delhi
i. The first trade fair of the BRICS countries will be held on October 12-14 in New Delhi. Along with it the meetings of the BRICS Business Forum and BRICS Business Council would also be held.
ii. India is the chair for 2016 of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) group of emerging economies. Their upcoming trade fair will be held at PragatiMaidan exhibition grounds in the national capital. The trade fair will showcase about 20 key sectors.
iii. Delhi Police launches mobile app for senior citizens: 'Delhi Police Senior Citizen'
The application 'Delhi Police Senior Citizen' was launched by Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung and Police Commissioner Alok Kumar Verma in the presence of senior police officials.
iv. The mobile application will serve as an aid to the elderly in times of distress or in case of medical emergencies. The application will be available on Google Play Store.

Mizoram Launches Economic Dev Policy
i. In order to boost the state’s economy and develop rural infrastructure the Mizoram government has launched a New Economic Development Policy (NEDP).
ii. The new policy would develop private-public partnerships for adding value to various agricultural, horticultural and other produce.
iii. Under the NEDP, key sectoral interventions identified for 2016-17 are for agriculture, horticulture, link roads, introduction of annual agriculture and horticulture crops with high domestic consumption and other high-value crops, improved processing facilities and marketing linkages for agricultural and horticultural produce, establishment of handloom export promotion facility, and a skills development centre.
iv. The NEDP also aimed to establish additional classrooms in higher secondary and model schools to meet the growing demand for admission into government-run higher secondary schools.
Govt releases Swachh Bharat stamps designed by kids
i. The Government on Sunday released commemorative postal stamps on the Swachh Bharat Mission, which were designed by children aged 10-14 years.
ii. The Department of Posts had organised a nationwide competition for designing the postage stamps of denominations of INR  5 and INR 25, and a miniature sheet. The first prize of INR 10,000 went to 12-year-old BinitaBiswajeeta.

World's largest balloon festival begins in US
i. The largest balloon festival in the world, the 45th Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico, United States entered its third day today.
ii. Hot air balloons of all shapes and sizes, including numerous character-themed balloons, took off into the air during the festival. The theme for the nine-day festival is 'Desert Kaleidoscope'.
Libya hosts its first-ever Comic Con
i. Libya hosted its first-ever Comic Convention between September 23 and 25 in Tripoli. The Comic Con, which was attended by thousands of comic and cosplay fans, featured booths displaying various comic book franchises and gaming stations. Its organisers won sponsorships from the Ministry of Culture and a local NGO specialising in arts and culture.
Over 700 million around world still living in extreme poverty: World Bank
i. World Bank says, more than 700 million people around the world are still living in extreme poverty. In a report released yesterday, based on data upto 2013, it said 767 million people are living on less than a dollar and ninety cents a day.
ii. The figure is 13 percent down from the previous year, but still accounts for more than 10 percent of the world's population. Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for half the world's extreme poor. World Bank and the United Nations have set a goal of ending extreme poverty by 2030.
Russia Suspends Plutonium Program With USA
i. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree to suspend an agreement with the United Stateson disposing of weapons­grade plutonium.
The deal was signed in 2000 and went into force under a 2010 agreement.
ii. According to Russia, it was being suspended due to “the emergence of a threat to strategic stabilityand as a result of unfriendly actions by the United States of America towards the RussianFederation.
BANKING NEWS
RBI issued Rs100 coins on Shastri's 100th birth anniversary
i. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had issued Rs100 coins in 2004 to mark the 100th birth anniversary of India's second Prime Minister LalBahadurShastri.
ii. The coin, which has a portrait of the leader, is currently not in circulation but can be ordered exclusively. Notably, Shastri shares his birthday with Mahatma Gandhi.




First Indian Bank Opens Branch in Yangon: State Bank of India
i. The State Bank of India has become the first India bank to open a branch in the capital city of Yangon.The Yangon branch is the 54th foreign branch of the SBI.This branch extends the global presence of SBI in 37 countries through 198 offices.
ii. SBI has been associated with Myanmar since 1861, when the erstwhile Bank of Bengal operated its branch in the then Rangoon. Later, as part of bank nationalisation, the operations of the Rangoon branch of SBI were taken over by the Peoples’ Bank of Burma in February 1963.
iii. The Myanmarese central bank earlier this year allowed SBI to open a branch with the primary objective of extending wholesale banking services to foreign corporates.
Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi lead income disclosures: Report
i. Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi accounted for nearly half of the INR 65,250 crore black money disclosures made under the Income Declaration Scheme, tax officials said.
ii. Hyderabad reportedly topped the list with INR 13,000 crore, while Mumbai and Delhi received disclosures worth over INR 8,000 crore each. The government, however, has not released a state-wise break-up, to ensure confidentiality.

India BPO Promotion Scheme
i. The Government has approved India BPO Promotion Scheme (IBPS) under the Digital India Programme to create employment opportunities and promotion of BPO/ITES operations across the country to secure balanced regional growth of IT/ITES industry, with an outlay of INR 493 crore.
ii. The scheme provides capital support along with special incentives up to INR 1 lakh/seat in form of Viability Gap Funding (VGF).
About 48,300 seats have been planned with distribution across State(s)/UT(s) based on population percentage as per Census 2011, excluding metro cities along with their urban agglomeration viz. Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, NCR and Pune and States of North East Region (NER).
iii. Dedicated Web Portal www.ibps.stpi.in has been launched which is one stop web portal to know bidding details, status, news, alerts and other related information regarding India BPO Promotion Scheme (IBPS).
The web portal also provides special login for bidders to raise disbursement requests related to capital support, special incentives and to furnish Quarterly Performance Report etc.
Objectives
1.       Creation of employment opportunities for the youth, by promoting the IT/ITES Industry particularly by setting up the BPO/ITES operations.
2.       Promotion of investment in IT/ITES Sector in order to expand the base of IT Industry and secure balanced regional growth.
Salient Features
1.       Total BPO/ITES seats: 48,300
2.       Financial Support: UptoRs. 1 lakh/seat
3.       Scheme Outlay: Rs. 493 crore
4.       Targeting employment for ~1.5 lakh persons across the country.

Financial Support under IBPS:
1.       Capital Support: 50% of actual expenditure with cap of Rs. 1 lakh/seat
Special Incentives: Percentage of eligible capital support, within cap of Rs. 1 lakh/seat
a.       5% for promoting local entrepreneur
b.      5% for providing employment to women
c.       2% for providing employment to persons with disability
d.      Up to 10% for providing employment beyond target
e.      5% for setting up operations other than State Capital
Status:
1.       The scheme was launched by Minister of Electronics & IT on 28th December 2015.
2.       In the two rounds of bidding of IBPS, 83 online bids for about 15,000 BPO/ITES seats received.
3.       In-Principle Approval (IPA) issued for a total of 9,020 BPO/ITES seats.
4.       22 online bids received in 2nd round of bidding for more than 3,000 seats are under technical and financial evaluation by STPI.
5.       More than 50 companies will set up BPO/ITES operations in 60 Locations across 18 States & 2 UT.
AGREEMENTS & MoUs
Reliance, Dassault tie up for Rafale deal execution
i. Anil Ambani-led Reliance Infrastructure and Rafale jets maker Dassault Aviation today announced a joint venture for the execution of the offset contract worth about INR 22,000 crore as part of the fighter jet deal.
ii. This is reportedly India's largest-ever offset contract. The announcement of Dassault Reliance Aerospace follows India and France signing an agreement for 36 Rafale fighter jets.

R Ravindra concurrently accredited Ambassador to Guinea
i. Shri R Ravindra, presently Ambassador of India to the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire, has been concurrently accredited as the Ambassador of India to the Republic of Guinea. The Republic of Guinea is a country on the West coast of Africa.

i. DrSubhash Chandra Khuntia IAS (Karnataka 1981) has been appointed as Chief Secretary on repatriation from Central Deputation with effect from 01.10.2016 vice ShriArvindJadhav IAS (Karnataka 1978) retiring from service on superannuation.

Yoshinori Ohsumi wins Nobel prize in medicine for work on autophagy
i. Japanese cell biologist is named 2016 laureate for his discoveries on how the body’s cells detoxify and repair themselves
ii. The Nobel prize in medicine has been awarded to Yoshinori Ohsumi for his discoveries on how the body’s cells detoxify and repair themselves.
The Japanese cell biologist, 71, will receive the prestigious 8m Swedish kronor (£718,000) award for “mechanisms for autophagy”.
SJVN Honoured With “P.L. Roy Award" By HelpAge India For Meritorious CSR Works
i. The prestigious 'P.L. Roy Award' instituted by HelpAge India has been conferred on SJVN for its outstanding contribution in providing free & quality medical care to the communities as one of its many CSR initiatives.
ii. The award was presented by Hon'ble Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, and PMO Dr. Jitendra Singh to Shri R.N. Misra, Chairman and Managing Director, SJVN at a glittering event held at New Delhi today.
iii. The function was held in commemoration of 'International Day of Older Persons' by HelpAge India.

Indian-origin Kiara Nirghin wins Google Science Fair prize 2016
i. Indian-origin South African girl KiaraNirghin on 1 October 2016 won the Google Science Fair prize 2016. She won this grand prize of 50000 US dollars scholarship for using orange peel to develop a cheaper super-absorbent material that helps soil retain water.
ii. KiaraNirghin is a Grade 11 student at St Martin’s private school. She did a project titled No More Thirsty Crops which was aimed at tackling the severe drought plaguing South Africa. Her solution to the problem of drought uses orange and avocado fruit peel, which are normally discarded.
iii. The Google Science Fair is a programme for budding scientists between the ages of 13 to 18, who are invited to solve the world’s biggest challenges using science and technology.
SPORTS NEWS
Gaganjeet Bhullar wins Korea Open
ii. India's Gaganjeet Bhullar stormed back from a five-stroke deficit to win the Korea Open on Sunday, ending an Asian Tour drought after sustaining a serious wrist injury two years ago.
ii. The 28-year-old fired an impressive 67 for a four-day total of 269 at the Bears Best Cheongna Golf Club, winning the 216 million-won ($196,000) cash prize.
The United States won the Ryder Cup, the golf tournament.
iii. It is held every two years and played this time at the Hazeltine National Golf Club at Chaska (Minnesota).
With this year’s win, the US brings a halt to Europe’s three-Cup streak, including its wins in Celtic Manor in 2010, Medinah in 2012 and Gleneagles in 2014, and it will next defend its newly-recovered title in Paris in 2018.
Ricciardo Wins Malaysian Grand Prix
i. Daniel Ricciardo has won 2016 Malaysian Grand Prix Race.The Malaysian Grand Prix is a round of the Formula One World Championship.
ii. It has been held at the Sepang International Circuit since 1999, although FIA­sanctioned racing inMalaysia has existed since the 1960s.Since 2011, the race has been officially known as the Malaysia Grand Prix.
India win Test series against New Zealand
i. India defeated New Zealand by 178 runs in the second Test on Monday to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match Test series.
ii. A total of 15 LBW dismissals were registered in the match, the maximum in any of India's Tests at home. With the victory, India regained its status as the world's number one Test team from Pakistan.
