World Toilet Day: 19 November

World Toilet Day is observed on 19 November every year with an aim to motivate millions across the world on issues of sanitation. The theme for 2016 World Toilet Day is ‘toilets and jobs’. The theme, toilets and jobs, focuses on how sanitation or the lack of it can impact livelihoods of people.


Uttar Pradesh :CM launches integrated emergency services UP-100

i. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister AkhileshYaday launched state wide integrated emergency services UP-100 in Lucknow today. The UP-100 is the official name of Uttar Pradesh Police Emergency Management System previously called dial 100 project.
ii. The new high tech centralized emergency system will ensure that police reach a caller in a maximum of twenty minutes in rural areas and within 15 minutes in urban areas.The UP 100 has been established to provide emergency services relating to public safety across the state round the clock.
iii. A centralized contact centre has been established at Lucknow for receiving emergency calls directly from across the state. After inaugurating the system, MrYadav underlined that people need not to go to police, instead police will reach them on time.  Our correspondent reports that the UP-100 will be available initially in 11 districts of the state from tonight and later, it will cover all the remaining districts. The state government has allocated Rs. 2,200 crore for the project.
Goa all set to host 47th International Film Festival of India
Goa is all set to host the 47th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) tomorrow. Panaji is abuzz with activities, with the organizers busy in rendering the final touches to the event. Around 200 films from 88 countries will be screened in the festival which will conclude on the 28th of this month. Goa is successfully and regularly hosting IFFI from 2004.
Prime Minister Modi to address Global Citizen India festival today
i. Prime Minister NarendraModi will address the Global Citizen India festival through video conferencing this evening. The festival, to be held in Mumbai, will bring together popular culture and public policy in one of the largest gathering for a social cause.
ii. Global Citizen India is a social action platform for a generation that wants to solve the world's challenges. The festival will conclude a two-month long campaign in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
New draft education policy emphasises on internationalization of curricula: Venkaiah Naidu
i. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said that the new draft education policy emphasises on “internationalization of curricula”. He said that it will make the higher education especially technical education sector, globally compatible with the best ranked institutions of the world.
ii. Speaking at a private college function in Bengaluru today, he said that the draft policy encourages selected foreign universities from the top 200 in the world to establish their presence in India through collaboration with Indian Universities. Mr. Naidu said this is essential to create a congenial atmosphere for science and industry flourish on its own.
iii. Mr Naidu said that the draft national educational policy is an initiative with the view to make India the “education hub” of the world. He said that Accessibility, equity, quality, accountability, affordability are the five pillars on which the new education policy is based.
Oscar entry from Bangladesh screened at Kolkata film fest
'Oggatonama', the film which is Bangladesh's entry for the Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film category, was screened at the ongoing 22nd Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF). "Oggatonama (The Unnamed)... lays bare the reality of migration... It is a film about life, love and everlasting hope while delivering a strong global message," said the film's director Tauquir Ahmed.
World Internet Conference 2016 concludes in Wuzhen, China
The 2016 World Internet Conference concluded on 18 November 2016 in Wuzhen, China. The theme of the 3rd World Internet Conference, which commenced on 16 November 2016, was Innovation-driven Internet Development for the Benefit of All – Building a Community of Common Future in Cyberspace.

Marrakesh: 200 countries including India adopt workplan for implementation of Paris Climate Agreement by 2018
i. About 200 countries, including India, today adopted a work plan for the implementation of Paris climate agreement by 2018 during an important UN summit in Marrakesh. After two weeks of negotiations, the Marrakesh climate change summit also underline the urgent need for early action on part of developed countries for emission reduction in accordance to their commitments in the Kyoto protocol which still has four years to go before its expiry in 2020.
ii. With discussions centered mainly on procedural issues, the Marrakesh meeting went into overtime last night with many countries including India raising some concerns over a few draft proposals. The decision sets up the stage for an early implementation of the Paris agreement which was negotiated as a successor regime to the Kyoto protocol for the post 2020 period. Paris agreement finalized in December last year entered into effect in less than a year.
IMF: Haiti extends line of credit of $41.6 million in financial assistance
i. International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said, Haiti will be extended a line of credit of over 41 million dollars to help the nation deal with financial pressures in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. The Executive Board of IMF said this in a release yesterday.
ii. The release said, emergency relief and reconstruction costs will significantly raise the overall fiscal deficit and external current account deficit over the next few years. The category 4 Hurricane Matthew hit the country in early October, killing more than 500 people, displacing more than 1,75,000 into temporary shelters, and putting over 1 million in immediate need of humanitarian assistance.
Mauritius to waive 40% shooting tax for Indian film-makers
i. Mauritius will waive 40 per cent shooting tax for Indian film-makers for shooting on the island nation. The decision was taken by Mauritius Prime Minister AneroodJugnauth, who is on a visit to Mumbai. He met with Maharashtra Finance Minister SudhirMungantiwar.
ii. Mr.Mungantiwarsaid, a number of issues were discussed in the meeting, including tourism, logistics, education, sugarcane industry and construction. 60 industrialists and 20 Bollywood personalities were among those who were present in the meeting. During the meeting, the state government also discussed how it could adopt the Mauritius model of tourism to beautify the beaches in Maharashtra.
Goa, Hawaii to soon have Sister-State relationship
The state of Hawaii would soon have a formal Sister-State relationship with Goa, Hawaii Congresswoman TulsiGabbard said while addressing the World Hindu Economic Forum. "We look forward to... see what further opportunities there are to build more bridges between our two states and the two countries," said Gabbard, the first Hindu lawmaker to be elected to the US Congress.
Jayawardene replaces Ponting as head coach of Mumbai Indians
Former Sri Lankan cricketer MahelaJayawardene has been announced as the head coach of IPL side Mumbai Indians, replacing former Australian captain Ricky Ponting. The Australian took over the post in 2014 with the team winning the title in 2015 and finishing fifth this year. Jayawardene previously played for Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Daredevils in the IPL.
Donald Trump picks Michael Flynn as NSA
United States president-elect Donald Trump has named Michael Flynn, an ex-army general as his National security adviser. Flynn served as Mr Trump's top military advisor during the Presidential campaign. Mr Trump chose Republican Senator Jeff Sessions as his Attorney General and Congressman Mike Pompeo as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
Pt Hari Prasad Chourasia gets lifetime achievement award for classical music
Noted flautist PtHari Prasad Chourasia has been conferred this year’s Sumitra Charat Ram Award for lifetime achievement in the field of Indian classical music. The Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awardee has also worked as a music director for Indian films, besides collaborating with several international musicians.

Tata Consultancy Services and Vedanta wins ACES awards
Two leading Indian companies, Tata Consultancy Services and Vedanta have been awarded for their leadership in sustainability, corporate social responsibility, eco-consciousness and community care at the third annual Asia Corporate Excellence and Sustainability Awards (ACES). TATA Consultancy Services (TCS) was named Industry Champions in the Leadership category. India’s Vedanta Limited was named “Top Companies to Work For in Asia.”
Latin Grammy Awards 2016
The 17th annual Latin Grammys has been announced at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada, US. The nominations were announced on September 21, 2016. Latin Grammy Award is given by The Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences to recognize outstanding achievement in the Latin music industry.

RCom creates new infra subsidiary Towercom
Anil Ambani-led telecom operator Reliance Communications (RCom) on Thursday said it has created a subsidiary, Towercom Infrastructure. Towercom has subscribed 95% share capital, which is 9,500 shares of ₹10 each, RCom said. Earlier, RCom had announced the sale of 51% stake in its telecom tower business to Canada-based Brookfield Infrastructure Group for an upfront cash payment of ₹11,000 crore.
Kohli 1st to score 500+ runs in all formats in a calendar yr
ViratKohli is the first player to score 500+ runs in each of the three formats in a calendar year. Kohli's aggregate of 2196 runs this year includes 816 runs in Tests, 641 runs in T20Is and 739 runs in ODIs. No batsman has made over 500 runs in a calendar year in T20Is since the inception of the format.

15-year-old Mumbai boy takes 10 wickets in an innings
Dev Patel, a 15-year-old Mumbai boy, took 10 wickets in an innings during the U-16 Harris Shield tournament, organised by the Mumbai Cricket Association, on Friday. Patel ended with figures of 10/9, bowling out the opponents for 29 in 11.5 overs. In the tournament, two schoolboys, ShreyanPai and Aryan More, put up an unbeaten 425-run stand in 45 overs.

6-year-old boy from Pune treks to Everest Base camp
AdvaitBhartiya, a six-year-old boy from Pune, who recently trekked to the Everest Base Camp, is reportedly the youngest Indian to have reached the spot in winter. Bhartiya spent more than a month training for the 13-day expedition. The base camp is located in northeast Nepal, measuring over 17,000 feet above the sea level.

Singer Sharon Jones passes away aged 60
American singer Sharon Jones, lead singer of soul and funk bad 'Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings', died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 60 in New York on Friday. Jones released her first record when she was 40 years old. She was nominated for her first Grammy in 2014 for the album 'Give the People What They Want'.
