Universal Children's Day is observed on November 20
i. United Nations Universal Children’s Day was established in 1954 and is celebrated on November 20th each year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children's welfare. November 20th is an important date as it is the date in 1959 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child.
ii. It is also the date in 1989 when the UN General assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Since 1990, Universal Children's Day also marks the anniversary of the date that the UN General Assembly adopted both the declaration and the convention on children's rights.
World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims 2016 observed globally
i. Third Sunday of November: World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims was observed globally on 20 November 2016 with the theme Vital post-crash actions: Medical Care, Investigation, Justice!.The Day is observed on every third Sunday of November by an increasing number of countries on every continent around the world. It is observed to remember millions who were killed or injured in road crashes. The Day has also become an important means to reduce road casualties.
Prime Minister to launch Pradhanmantri Grameen Awas Yojna to provide 3 crore affordable housing units across country
i. Prime Minister NarendraModi will launch Pradhanmantri Grameen Awas Yojna, an ambitious housing scheme meant for rural poor in Agra today. The housing scheme is expected to provide affordable houses to all those living below the poverty line by the year 2022.
ii. Mr Modi will also distribute allotment letters to 50 beneficiaries of the scheme which aims to provide about 3 crore new housing units countrywide. The Prime Minister will also address a large gathering of the BJP supporters in the afternoon, kick starting the party's electoral campaign in the region for the next year Assembly elections.
Smriti Irani launches 'pehchan' identity cards to Gujarat artisans
i. Union textile minister SmritiIrani inaugurated thematic handicrafts exhibition and launched a scheme of textile ministry 'pehchan' identity cards to artisans in Ahmedabad, yesterday. She distributed 'pehchan' cards to artisans from five clusters of Gujarat namely Jamnagar, Naroda, Surendranagar, Amreli and Kalol.
ii. In a bid to encourage women and BPL artisans for metal craft, the ministry also announced that tool kits and safety equipment will be given to them free of cost. She said that textile ministry will also organize insurance camps in February to provide credit guarantee scheme and insurance to artisans at their doorstep.
PM Modi promises houses for all by 75th Independence Day
i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced plans to provide a house for every Indian to mark 75 years of independence in 2022. Addressing the Parivartan rally in Agra, PM Modi claimed that municipalities have become cash-rich after demonetisation. He also paid tribute to those killed in the Patna-Indore Express crash earlier in the day.
AR Rahman performs at Global Citizen Festival
i. Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman performed at the Global Citizen Festival in Mumbai on Saturday. Actor Shah Rukh Khan, who invited Rahman onstage, said, "I wouldn't be what I am if it were not for Rahman's Chaiyya Chaiyya." Rahman performed the title track from 'Dil Se' among other instrumental pieces at the event.
World’s first Bollywood-themed park opens in Dubai
i. Bollywood Parks, Dubai has opened with fanfare, fireworks, dance, music and simulator 4D shows based on hit Hindi-language movies. Visitors were greeted by performers dancing to thumping Bollywood music across the park with some atop a mock-up of a suburban Mumbai railway train and others outside the Rajmahal theatre, which will stage live musicals.
RBI proposes 'Islamic window' in banks for Sharia banking
i. The Reserve Bank of India has proposed opening “Islamic window” in conventional banks for “gradual” introduction of Sharia-compliant banking in India. “Initially, a few simple products... similar to conventional banking products may be considered for introduction through Islamic window," RBI said.

India, Cyprus ink new tax pact to replace 2 decade-old treaty
i. India and Cyprus has signed a new double tax avoidance pact under which capital gains tax will be levied on sale of shares on investments made after April 1, 2017, bringing the island nation at par with Mauritius in terms of tax treatment. The latest pact would replace the existing Double Tax Avoidance Agreement (DTAA), which was in place since June 13, 1994.

Google launches online exhibition on iconic Indian women
i. Technology giant Google has launched an online exhibition exploring narratives of "India's iconic women and unsung heroines through history." The collection of artworks and stories spans 2,500 years and includes scientists, leaders, and artists. Some of the women featured are India's first practicing woman doctor Savitribai Phule and eminent Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil.
Jagdish Singh Khehar appointed Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority
i. The Union Government on 18 November 2016 announced the appointment of Jagdish Singh Khehar as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).Khehar, a judge of the Supreme Court, will succeed Anil R. Dave.
The National Legal Services Authority of India was formed on 5 December 1995.
It was instituted under the authority of the Legal Services Authorities Act 1987.
Its purpose is to provide free legal services to eligible candidates and to organize Lok Adalats for speedy resolution of cases.
Catholic Syrian Bank to appoint CVR Rajendran as MD & CEO
i. The Reserve Bank of India has granted approval for appointment of C.V.R. Rajendran as the Managing Director & CEO of Catholic Syrian Bank for a period of three years from the date of his taking charge.
ii. Rajendran is currently holding the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Mutual Funds of India. Prior to this, he has held other key positions like Chairman and Managing Director of Andhra Bank and Executive Director at Bank of Maharashtra.
Al Nahyan granted Mother Teresa International Award
i. Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, has been conferred the prestigious Mother Teresa International Award by the Mumbai-based NGO Harmony Foundation. Shaikh Abdullah is being honoured for his work in establishing institutions that protect youth from being radicalised and indoctrination from terrorist groups and persons looking to propagate violence against innocent people.
ii. The Mother Teresa Awards are to honour individuals and organizations that promote peace, equality and social justice, and aim to encourage the cause of justice and peaceful coexistence, while providing a impetus for society to imbibe these values.

Indian firm to deliver Apache chopper parts to US in 2018
i. Hyderabad-based Tata-Boeing Aerospace Limited will deliver the first consignment of Apache helicopter fuselages to the US by 2018, a company official said. Adding that the firm plans to build complete Apache choppers by 2018, the official said, "We are in the middle of negotiating over 240 aircraft for the US Army and 450 aircraft for all customers."
Russia's Soyuz spacecraft arrives at International Space Station
i. Russia's Soyuz spacecraft has arrived at the International Space Station, carrying a European, a Russian and an American astronaut for a four-month mission at the orbiting outpost. Capture confirmed, said a NASA commentator as the spacecraft docked at the ISS at 4:58 PM (local time), yesterday.
ii. The trio - including Frenchman Thomas Pesquet, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Novitskiy and American astronaut Peggy Whitson, launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Thursday. Pesquet, a rookie astronaut and amateur saxophone player, is the first French national to be sent to the ISS by the European Space Agency since 2008.
R Ashwin 1st bowler ever to take 50 wickets in consecutive years
i. Ravichandran Ashwin, with his 5-wicket haul against England in the Visakhapatnam Test, became the first bowler ever to complete 50 wickets in two consecutive calendar years. The off-spinner took 62 wickets in 9 Tests in 2015 and has so far claimed 52 wickets in 9 Tests in 2016. Notably, Ashwin was the top wicket-taker in Tests last year.
Kenya's Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge wins men's Delhi Half Marathon
i. Reigning Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya won the men's race of Delhi Half Marathon in a fast time but below the course record while Ethiopia's Worknesh Degefa clinched the women's title today.Kipchoge clocked 59 minutes and 44 seconds to cover the 21.097km distance.
ii. Ethiopia’s Yigrem Demelash came second and Kenya’s Augustine Choge was third. In the women’s elite race, Degefa clocked one hour, seven minutes and 42 seconds to clinch the title ahead of fellow Ethiopian Ababel Yeshaneh and Helah Kiprop of Kenya. Reigning half marathon world champion Peres Jepchirchir of Kenya was fifth.
Manavjit Singh clinches gold medal in National Shooting championship
i. Former world champion Manavjit Singh Sandhu clinched the gold medal in men's trap event at the 60th National Shooting Championship for Shotgun in Jaipur today. The four-time Olympian from Punjab shot 117 in qualifying to reach the six-man final rounds in fourth spot.
ii. He then shot 12 out of 15 birds in the semi-final stage to make it to the gold medal match. He defeated silver winner Raninder Singh, who was representing Odhisa, 14-13, to seal the top spot in his favour.Young Kynan Chenai of Telengana, who represented India at the Rio Olympics, bagged the bronze medal beating Adhiraj Singh Rathore of Rajasthan 14-12.
PV Sindhu wins her 1st tournament post Rio Olympics
i. PV Sindhu won the China Open on Sunday, to register her first tournament win post the Rio Olympics. World number 11 Sindhu defeated ninth-ranked China's Sun Yu 21-11, 17-21, 21-11. This is the third straight year that an Indian woman has made the China Open final, with Saina Nehwal winning the title in 2014 and finishing as runner-up in 2015.
Indian keeper effected record 14 dismissals on this day
i. The record for most dismissals by a wicketkeeper in a first-class match was made by Hyderabad's Ibrahim Khaleel on November 20, 2011. The wicketkeeper effected 14 dismissals, eleven catches and three stumpings, against Assam in the Ranji Trophy Plate League. ii. The previous record was held by Zimbabwe's Wayne James, who had claimed thirteen dismissals in a domestic match in 1996.
World’s first heart transplant doctor passes away
i. Renowned heart surgeon Denton Cooley, who performed the world`s first artificial heart transplant in the United States, has passed away at the age of 96 in Houston, Texas. Cooley, who was the founder of Texas Heart Institute, pioneered many techniques still used in cardiovascular surgery.
