World Television Day Observed on 21 November
The United Nations’ (UN) World Television Day was observed in countries across the world on 21 November 2016. The day is aimed at recognizing the important role television plays in presenting issues that affect people globally. It is also meant to honor the role Television plays as the pillar of freedom of expression and as a promoter of cultural diversity.
i. Information and Broadcasting Minister Vankaiah Naidu today inaugurated the Indian Panorama at the International Film Festival of India in Goa. Altogether 22 cinemas in feature film category and 21 movies in the non-feature film category are being screened in the Indian Panorama this year. While opening movie in the feature film category was Sanskrit film Ishti, directed by G. Prabha, the inaugural film in the non-feature film category was Ima Savitri directed by Bobo Khuraijam.
ii. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Naidu said, Indian Panorama is a platform for young and aspiring filmmakers to show their talent and creativity to the world audience. The Minister said, Indian Panorama also provides an opportunity to filmmakers to show Indian culture to the world. Mr Naidu also felicitated cast and crew of both the movies as well as the jury members.
i. Government is setting up Higher Education Financing Agency, HEFA, to provide funds for creating infrastructure and promoting research facilities in the Centrally-aided institutions of higher learning. The agency will leverage funds from the market. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha today, Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Dr. Mahendra Nath Pandey said, the Center will provide equity of one thousand crore rupees for establishing HEFA.
ii. He said, the agency will mobilize funds under Corporate Social Responsibility and function as a non-banking financing company. Dr Pandey also informed that the interest on loans provided by HEFA to institutions will be met by the government. The move will help provide quality education to students without putting burden on them.
Mahindra & Mahindra today opened its Rs 150 crore spare parts warehouse in Jaipur to cater to customers in north and north western regions of the country for both automotive and tractor spare parts.Spread on 11-acre plot with an additional 5 acres for future expansion, the warehouse aims to significantly reduce the order processing time for North India customers.
The processing time for the availability of spare parts and distance-to-market is expected to take less than 4 days. M&M will procure spare parts from over 1,000 vendors and nine plants for the new facility, which was formally inaugurated today by the company's Managing Director Pawan Goenka. With an investment of Rs 150 crore, it will generate over 450 direct and indirect jobs. "
Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav inaugurated India's longest expressway from Agra to Lucknow on Monday. The 300-km expressway, completed in a record time of 23 months, would reportedly reduce the Lucknow-Delhi journey time by almost half to 5-6 hours. The inaugural event saw Indian Air Force fighter jets perform simulated landings on the expressway, a first for any road launch.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday commissioned a 5 MW solar power plant in Gollagudem village of the West Godavari district. The plant, set up at a cost of Rs.37.58 crore, will produce 8.06 million units of power annually. Andhra Pradesh had also commissioned India's first solar park with a capacity of 250 MW in Ananthapuramu district.
Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has announced that all colleges and universities in the state will have free WiFi facility from February next year. While announcing the scheme, the CM encouraged the youth to use the facility for studies. The Bihar government has also launched a scheme to provide interest-free loans to students for higher studies after class 12.
Germanwatch and Climate Action Network Europe released the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) 2017 on 16 November 2016. The CCPI confirms that there is a boost for renewable energy and positive developments in energy efficiency. The index ranks India at the 20th position and says that countries like India are making efforts in fields of renewable and energy efficiency.
Highlights of CCPI 2017
1. It says that the historic Paris Agreement that was reached in 2015 has helped in encouraging the trends in switching towards the renewable energy, but the revolution in switching at the global level is very slow.
2. Policy side: The index says that many countries lack in ambition in switching towards the renewable energy.
Tokyo's first female Governor Yuriko Koike will launch a drive this week to establish the megacity as Asia's top financial centre, reports said. Koike has set up a 15-member panel to tackle issues such as high personal tax rates, language barrier, and other regulations. Tokyo is currently ranked fifth behind London, New York, Singapore and Hong Kong.
India was on 19 November 2016 elected as Vice Chair of Kimberly Process Certificate Scheme (KPCS) 2018 and as the Chair for 2019 of KPCS. The announcement was made during the KP Plenary Meeting 2016 at Dubai. Earlier, this position of KP Chair was held by India in 2008.
India's position in Kimberly Process Certificate Scheme
1. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme imposes widespread requirements on its members to enable them to certify shipments of rough diamonds.
2. India is one of the founding members of Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS).
3. The Department of Commerce under Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry administers the scheme.
4. The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) is the Import and Export Authority within the meaning of Section IV(b) of the Scheme.
i. Further relaxing cash withdrawal norms, the Reserve Bank today said overdraft and cash credit account holders can now withdraw up to Rs. 50,000 in a week. Earlier, current account holders were allowed to withdraw up to Rs. 50,000 in cash, in a week. "On a review, it has been decided to extend this facility to Overdraft and Cash Credit accounts also," the central bank
ii. Accordingly, holders of current/overdraft/cash credit accounts, which are operational for the last three months or more, may now withdraw uptoRs. 50,000 in cash, in a week. However, this enhanced limit for weekly withdrawal is not applicable for personal overdraft accounts. The Reserve Bank further said the Rs. 50,000 withdrawals may be disbursed predominantly in Rs. 2,000 denomination bank notes.
Reliance Infrastructure Ltd has bagged Rs. 3,675 crore EPC order from NLC India Ltd for setting up two lignite-based thermal power projects of 250 MW each in Rajasthan. "The contract entails complete engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) on turnkey basis of 2 Nos of 1 X 250 MW power plant based on Circulating Fluidised Bed Combustion (CFBC) technology," RInfra said in a BSE filing today. The project is to be commissioned in 40 months, and will include boiler, turbine and generator and balance of plant.
Telangana government has joined hands with Mumbai based IDFC Bank to enable cashless transactions and to solve the change problem. IDFC Bank Ltd. is an Indian banking company with headquarters in Mumbai and bank started operations on 1 October 2015.
The State Bank of Mauritius (SBM) Group has appointed Siby Sebastian as Chief Executive for its India operations. The SBM Group operates four branches in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Ramachandrapuram. State Bank of Mauritius, is a bank in Mauritius. It is licensed as a commercial bank by the Bank of Mauritius, the national banking regulator.
An image of the planet Mars taken by ISRO's Mars-orbiting spacecraft Mangalyaan has found a place on the cover of the November edition of the National Geographic magazine. The spacecraft's launch had completed three years on November 5. The mission, which had cost Rs. 450 crore, was made to last six months but has now survived for three years.
Ariana wins Artist of the Year at American Music Awards
Singer Ariana Grande was named 'Artist of the Year' at the 2016 American Music Awards (AMAs). While Selena Gomez won the AMA for 'Favorite Female Artist - Pop/Rock', Justin Bieber won the award in the male category. Bieber also won the 'Video of the Year' award for his track 'Sorry'. Further, Drake was named 'Favorite Artist - Rap/Hip-Hop'.
INS ‘Chennai’, an indigenously designed and constructed, Kolkata-class guided missile destroyer was commissioned into Indian Navy, in the presence of Union Defence Minister ManoharParrikar at Mazgaon Docks in Mumbai this morning. He called this a historic step. ‘Chief Admiral’ of the Indian Navy, Chief of the Naval Staff Sunil Lanba and Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command Vice Admiral GirishLuthra were also present on the occasion.
i. India today successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear capable Prithvi-II missile twice in quick succession as part of a user trial by the Army from a test range at Chandipur in Odisha.In salvo mode, the two surface-to-surface missiles which have a strike range of 350 km and are capable of carrying 500 kg to 1,000 kg of warheads were successfully test-fired in quick succession from mobile launcher from launch complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at around 9.35 AM
ii. A similar twin trial had been conducted on October 12, 2009 from the same base where both tests were successful.Inducted into Indian armed forces in 2003, the nine-metre-tall, single-stage liquid-fuelled Prithvi-II is the first missile to be developed by the DRDO under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme, defence sources said.

The National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA) on 20 November 2016 launched the highly advanced geostationary weather satellite Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R (GOES-R). The Satellite was launched by NASA on behalf of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It was launched on board of Atlas 5 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.
Britain's Andy Murray clinched the 2016 ATP World Tour Finals title, after defeating Serbia's Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-4 in the final in London on 20th November. With the win, Murray ended the 2016 season as the world number 1. It was for the first time in the history of the 46-year-old tournament that the title match decided the year-end World number one.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Praful Patel said India will bid for the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup, to further develop the game in the country. Patel said the hosting of the tournament will further give a boost to our "grassroots initiatives". Notably, India will be hosting the FIFA U-17 World Cup next year.
Indian golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar on Monday won the $300,000 (Rs.2 crore) BANK BRI-JCB Indonesia Open for the second time in his career. Two-time Asian Tour number one Jeev Milkha Singh finished tied-second in the tournament, which was his best result since 2012. It was Bhullar's overall seventh Asian Tour victory and the second title this season.
