i) The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri NarendraModi has approved the protocol amending the agreement between India and Tajikistan for avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income.
ii) The protocol, after it enters into force, will enable sharing of information exchanged under Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement, DTAA with other law enforcement agencies for non tax purposes.
i) Government announced Lucky Grahak Yojana to encourage consumers and DigiDhan Vyapari Yojana to encourage merchants for transition to digital payments.
ii) Addressing media in New Delhi, Chief Executive Officer of NITI Aayog Amitabh Kant said, National Payment Council of India will announce 15,000 winners of 1000 rupees each for next 100 days, starting from this Christmas.
iii) He said, 7000 weekly awards and maximum award of 50 thousand rupees each for merchants, under DigiDhan Vyapari Yojana.
iv) Mr Kant said, mega awards under the two schemes which will be announced on the birthday of Dr B R Ambedkar on 14th April. He said, the estimated expenditure of the schemes to incentivize Digital Payments is 340 crore rupees.
Cabinet approves signing of an Agreement between India and Kyrgyzstan on cooperation in the field of agriculture and food related industry
i) The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare for Signing of an Agreement between India and Kyrgyzstan on cooperation in the field of agriculture and food related industry.
ii) The Agreement provides for constitution of a Joint Working Group comprising of representatives from both countries which shall prepare plans of cooperation, provide solutions to the problems arising during the implementation of this Agreement and implementation of tasks determined by the Parties.
Cabinet approves ISRO and USGS for cooperation in the Exchange and use of U.S. Land Remote Sensing Satellite Data
i) The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has been apprised of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and United States Geological Survey (USGS) for Cooperation in the exchange and use of U.S. Land Remote Sensing Satellite Data.
ii) The MoU was signed on 9th July 2016 at Bengaluru. This MoU will enable ISRO to receive USGS's Landsat-7 & 8 in India and USGS to receive ISRO’s Resourcesat-2 (AWiFS and LISS III) data of US region.
i) The Union Cabinet approved India’s approach to Climate Change Negotiations at the 22 Conference of Parties (COP) to United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), held in Marrakesh, Morocco in November 2016.
ii) The approval aims to safeguard interest of poor and vulnerable groups by laying stress on adaptation, damage and loss while protecting the development space.
i) Union Minister of State for Power PiyushGoel has said, the Centre has selected 60 cities nationwide to implement the ‘Solar Cities’ programme.
ii) He informed the LokSabha in a written reply today that cities having a population of 50-thousand to 50-lakh are selected under the scheme.
iii) It is aimed at promoting sustainable energy initiatives. At least one city has to be included from every state and a maximum of seven cities per state are permitted.
iv) The scheme provides for a central financial assistance of upto 50 lakh rupees for each city.
i) Rio de Janeiro, nicknamed the Marvellous City, officially entered the UN’s list of world heritage sites on Tuesday in recognition of its soaring granite cliffs, urban rainforest and beaches.
ii) The UN cultural body, UNESCO, highlighted the “extraordinary fusion” of man-made and natural beauty in certifying Rio on the world heritage list during a ceremony held at the Christ the Redeemer statue.
i) The Indian Railways tied-up with the State Bank of India (SBI) to install at least 10000 Point of Sale (POS) machines using debit or credit cards at the Public Reservation System (PRS) counters of Railways.
ii) This tie-up was undertaken to promote Prime Minister NarendraModi's decision to promote cashless transactions.
iii) In the first phase, 40 POS will be installed on priority at A1, A and B category stations in the division.
i) UshaAnanthasubramanian, Managing Director & CEO of Punjab National Bank launched the Bank’s Mobile wallet - PNB Kitty.
ii) PNB Kitty is a digital wallet that enables a smart phone user to undertake on line transactions using the money stored in it i.e. without using debit card / credit card / internet banking and sharing sensitive information like passwords or card details.
iii) The App is available on Google Play Store.Funds can be transferred from a PNB Kitty to another PNB Kitty using mobile number of the receiver, and from one account to other using IMPS (through Account Number & IFSC).
i) VK Sharma, the acting chief of Life Insurance Corporation of India, is the new chairman and managing director of the nation's biggest insurer and investor, for five years. Sharma's future decisions would be keenly followed by investors as the government has plans to use the behemoth's funds to build infrastructure.
ii) LIC's role in corporate governance would also be keenly tracked, especially since it owns substantial stakes in many of India's prominent corporate houses. Infact, it hadremained a mere spectator in the tussle between Ratan Tata and Cyrus Mistry in the ongoing battle at Tata Sons and the Group Companies.
i) V G Kannan on Wednesday took charge as Chief Executive of the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA).
ii) He succeeds M V Tanksale who demitted office as Chief Executive on August 9, 2016 after being at the helm for three years.
iii) Kannan had retired as Managing Director & Group Executive (Associates & Subsidiaries) of State Bank of India on July 31, 2016.
iv) IBA is a self-regulatory organisation of banks. The 70-year old body has 237 members comprising public sector banks, private sector banks, foreign banks having offices in India, co-operative banks, regional rural banks, and all India financial institutions.
AWARDS AND HONORS:
i) Madonna’s biopic, titled Blond Ambition, was named as the best unproduced film script available at present in the Hollywood system.
ii) The biopic of Madonna topped the list of 73 scripts with 48 votes in the newly published annual Black List.
i) Prime Minister NarendraModi has been ranked among the top 10 most powerful people in the world by Forbes. MrModi ranks 9th on the list of 74 topped by Russian President Vladimir Putin for a fourth straight year.
ii) Forbes said, India's populist Prime Minister remains hugely popular in his country of 1.3 billion people. It said,MrModi has raised his profile as a global leader in recent years during official visits with Barack Obama and Xi Jinping.
iii) Forbes said, he has also emerged as a key figure in the international effort to tackle climate change, as planetary warming will deeply affect millions of his country's rural and most vulnerable citizens. It also took note of MrModi'sdemonetisation decision.
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY/DEFENCE NEWS:
i) The seventh edition of India, Maldives bilateral EKUVERIN Exercise 2016 began at Kadhdhoo, Laamu Atoll, Maldives.
ii) The aim of 14 day platoon level joint military exercise is to conduct military training between armies of both countries with emphasis on amphibious & counter insurgency, counter terrorism operations.
i) Pakistan Army has successfully test fired an enhanced version of an indigenously-designed Babur cruise missile. The missile incorporates advanced aerodynamics and avionics that can strike targets both at land and sea with high accuracy.
ii) Range: It can hit targets located at 700 km with all kinds of warheads. Thus, it brings many Indian cities within its range.
iii) Features: It is equipped with state-of-the-art navigational technologies of Terrain Contour Matching (TERCOM) and all time Digital Scene Matching & Area Co-relation (DSMAC).
i) Nobel Prize-winning economist Thomas Schelling, who used game theory to explain nuclear strategy, has passed away, according to a colleague.
ii) Schelling was awarded the Nobel Prize in economics in 2005 along with Robert Aumann.
