World Tuberculosis Day - 24th March
The World Tuberculosis (TB) Day 2017 was observed globally on 24 March 2017 with the theme Unite to End TB: Leave no one behind. This year, WHO places a special focus on uniting efforts to Leave no one behind, including actions to address stigma, discrimination, marginalization and overcome barriers to access care.

This year marks the second year of the End TB Strategy of the World Health Organisation (WHO). The strategy aims to help ensure that countries implementing it adhere to sound ethical standards to protect the rights of all those affected.

IIT Kanpur offers Rs.50L fund for Mobile water ATM startup :


IIT Kanpur has sanctioned a seed funding of 50 lakh to Decentrik Technologies, a Lucknow-based startup that makes mobile water ATMs. The ATM made by the startup gives 250 ml of drinking water for 2. The startup has also signed a deal with the Indian Oil to install RO systems at its petrol pumps.

Sena MP blacklisted by Air India and other airlines for hitting airline staffer :
State-run Air India has blacklisted Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad for hitting its staffer, Delhi Airport Manager Harinder Singh said. Gaikwad has said Air India misled him by giving a business class ticket despite not having a business class section in the flight. FIRs have also been lodged after Gaikwad admitted to hitting the staffer "25 times" with slippers.
Indigo, SpiceJet, GoAir and Jet Airways – part of the Federation of Indian Airlines – along with Air India have banned Gaikwad, who remained defiant and refused to apologise.

Committee formed to identify absconding IT officers by CBDT :
The Central Board of Direct Taxes, CBDT has constituted a committee to identify those IRS and other junior-rank officers of the Income Tax department who are on unauthorised leave or are absconding. The three-member committee will carry out a one-time count of all the officers to take strict disciplinary action against them. A senior official said, this will also send a message that officers and staff cannot take rules and laws for granted.
The committee is headed by an officer of the rank of Additional Director General (ADG). A senior official said the step was being taken by the policy-making body of the tax department after it was noticed that over a dozen such cases were investigated and officers were sacked in the last about two years.

"Delhi Darshan" rides set to launch from 1st April by Pawan Hans :
National chopper operator Pawan Hans is set to launch its "Delhi Darshan" rides from first April. At the inauguration of its first helipad in North Delhi's Rohini area, the Chairman and Managing Director of the company announced the roll out of Delhi Darshan rides. An initial ride is planned for tomorrow and the day after and the regular Delhi Darshan will commence from next Saturday.
Through this ride the visitors can experience the breathtaking beauty through aerial view of Pritampura Tower, Majnu Ka Tila, Red Fort, Rajghat, Akshardham Temple and surrounding areas by paying about 5,000 rupees for a 20 minute ride and about 2,500 rupees for a ten minute ride.

Proposal on adding 5 seat for tribals in Sikkim Assembly approved by NCST :
National Commission for Schedule Tribes, NCST has approved the proposal for five additional seat for tribals in the Sikkim Assembly. In its full meeting held in New Delhi yesterday, the Commission gave its approval to the proposal of increasing reserve seats for Schedule Tribes from 12 to 17 in Sikkim Assembly.
At present there are 32 members in Sikkim assembly and now it would be increased to 40. Tribal Affairs Minister in a release said, out of the proposed additional eight seats, five seats would be reserved for Limbu and Tamang tribes.

SAIL, BSNL, Air India worst performing PSUs in FY16: Survey
Coal India, ONGC and Indian Oil Corp emerged as star financial performers among India's central public sector enterprises in 2015-16, whereas SAIL, BSNL and Air India incurred most losses, a government survey has showed.
The Public Enterprises Survey, tracking the performance of CPSEs in 2015-16, revealed that the top three loss-making CPSEs -- SAIL, BSNL and Air India -- incurred a loss equal to 51.65 per cent of the total loss made by the top 10 loss-making CPSEs in 2015-16. SAIL entered the list of top 10 loss-making CPSEs, apart from ONGC Videsh, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam, PEC and BHEL.

World Heritage List released by UNESCO features 5 Indian cities :
The Union Government on 22 March 2017 informed that five Indian cities were included in the Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The information was given by the Union Minister of State for Culture and Tourism (Independent Charge) Dr Mahesh Sharmain in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha. The five Indian cities included in the list are Ahmadabad, Delhi, Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, Mumbai.

New PERU launched by Sri Lanka to create awareness on reconciliation among children :
Sri Lanka today unveiled a new Peace Education and Reconciliation Unit (PERU) to create awareness on reconciliation among children. Former President Madam Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Chairperson of Office for National Unity and Reconciliation told media that the programme has got excellent response from teachers and community members and will be instrumental in creating harmony amongst ethnic groups.
She said that PERU will be coordinated by a team consisting of a member from Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim community. The former President also revealed that a committee has been set up to look into the textbook syllabus and revise elements which are against minority community.

Bangladesh makes all preparations seeking recognition of March 25 as International Genocide Day :
Bangladesh has made all preparations to write to the United Nations seeking recognition of March 25 as International Genocide Day. This was declared by the Minister for Liberation War Affairs AKM Mozammel Huq yesterday at a press conference in the capital Dhaka.
The Minister said on March 11, the Bangladesh Parliament, Jatiya Sangsad, passed a resolution to observe March 25th as Genocide Day, and the cabinet on March 20th approved the resolution, completing all formalities to recognize the brutal genocide committed on this day in 1971. On the night of March 25, Pakistan army unleashed its war machine on the population of then East Pakistan killing around 50,000 people.

Sri Lanka got 2-year extension over reconciliation on war crimes from UNHRC grants :
United Nations Human Rights Council UNHRC, has granted Sri Lanka a two-year extension to fulfill obligation relating to reconciliation and accountability on war crimes during the civil war which ended in 2009. The resolution granting the extention was sponsored by 40 countries including United States and United Kingdom and adopted without a vote last night. It welcomed the steps taken by Sri Lanka to implement UNHRC resolution adopted in October, 2015 and called to fully implement the outstanding issues.
During the interactive dialogue, UNHRC chief Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein expressed concern over Sri Lanka's slow progress in establishing transitional justice mechanisms to address the accountability.

IDFC Bank plans to set up 30,000 micro ATMs and 75,000 Aadhaar Pay merchant points in two years :
IDFC Bank plans to build a network of more than one lakh points-of-presence in the next two years to enable people in the farthest corners of the country to transact digitally, a move that comes amid the government’s digitisation drive.
The Mumbai-based private lender plans to set up 30,000 micro ATMs and 75,000 Aadhaar Pay merchant points as part of its plan. While the micro ATMs function as a bank-in-a-box, most of the Aadhaar Pay merchants will be converted into business  ..

eBay's India operations to be acquired by Flipkart :
Flipkart is acquiring eBay India in a deal that is part of a $2 billion fundraising, according to reports. This comes after recent reports claimed that Flipkart has closed its $1 billion funding from Microsoft, Tencent and eBay, and plans to raise $1 billion more. Interestingly, eBay is a small investor in Flipkart's rival Snapdeal.

Bharathi Airtel to obtain Tikona Digital's operations for Rs1,600 crore :
India's largest operator Bharti Airtel on Thursday announced that it will buy internet service provider Tikona Digital Networks' 4G business in a deal worth 1,600 crore. The deal includes acquisition of Tikona's Broadband Wireless Access spectrum and 350 sites in five telecom circles, Airtel said. Earlier, Airtel said it'll buy Telenor's India operations due to competition from Reliance Jio.

World's largest 'artificial Sun' switched on in Germany :
German scientists are testing an 'artificial Sun', a massive light array for making hydrogen fuel by dissociating water molecules. The array consists of 140 Xenon lamps, typically used as cinematic spotlights, in a honeycomb pattern focused on an 8-inch-by-8-inch patch. The lamps can focus energy 10,000 times more intense than natural sunlight generating temperatures up to 3,000ºC on the patch.

Indian-led MIT team makes 3-D printed colour-changing 'skin' :
An MIT team led by Indian researcher Subramanian Sundaram has 3-D printed a device that responds to mechanical stresses by changing the colour of some spots on its surface. A flexible electronic circuitry was printed on a T-shaped plastic substrate. The circuitry changes colour when the plastic crossbars are stretched, which could be used for 3-D printing robots, said Sundaram.

USD 100 million credit agreement signed by World Bank with Centre, Uttarakhand :
The World Bank has signed a 100 million US dollar credit agreement with the Centre and Uttarakhand in New Delhi yesterday to improve quality of health care services in all 13 districts of the state.
World Bank said in a statement that most public health facilities in the middle and upper mountainous areas of Uttarakhand are unable to function optimally. It said large-scale vacancies of health staff is the reason as deployment and retention in such geographically remote areas has proven to be extremely difficult.

Michael Lobo designated as deputy speaker of Goa assembly :
BJP legislator Michael Lobo was today elected the deputy speaker of Goa assembly, defeating Isidore Fernandes of Congress. In the election held in the House, Lobo polled 21 votes, while Fernandes bagged 15.
While Speaker Pramod Sawant did not vote, two MLAs - Churchill Alemao (NCP) and Francis Silveira (Congress) - were not present in the assembly at the time of the election.

SBI Chief Among Fortune's 50 Greatest Leaders Of The World :
SBI chief Arundhati Bhattacharya and Indian-origin physician Raj Panjabi have been named by Fortune magazine among the world's 50 greatest leaders who are transforming the world and inspiring others to do the same. Bhattacharya, Chairman of India's largest bank and the first-ever woman to do so, has been ranked 26th on the list while Panjabi, founder and CEO of Last Mile Health, follows closely on the 28th spot.
The list has been topped by President of Baseball Operations at Chicago Cubs Theo Epstein, followed by Alibaba Group Executive Chairman Jack Ma on the second spot, Pope Francis (3), Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Cochair Melinda Gates (4) and Amazon Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos (5).

2 bronze medal won by Indian para shuttler Kadam in Spanish Para-Badminton International 2017 :
Indian para shuttler Sukant Kadam won the singles and doubles bronze medals in the recently-concluded Spanish Para-Badminton International 2017 held in Mallorca, Spain. Kadam lost to the top seed Lucas Mazur of France 15-21, 10-21 in the singles semis while in doubles, Kadam and compatriot Umesh Vikram Kumar lost to English pair Daniel Bethell and Bobby Griffin 17-21, 21-13, 21-13.

Indian Davis Cup Team features Bhupathi as India's non-playing captain; Paes in squad :
Indian tennis star Mahesh Bhupathi has been named Indian Davis Cup team's non-playing captain, while his former doubles partner Leander Paes has been included in the squad for the upcoming Davis Cup match against Uzbekistan. The duo, who have had differences in the past, will be playing alongside Yuki Bhambri and Rohan Bopanna among others.

The Indian women's hockey team led by striker Rani to take part in the World League Round 2 starting on 1st April in West Vancouver.
The Indian eves are going into the tournament as the top ranked side. Bakshi Stadium of Srinagar to be upgraded in facility as per FIFA norms :
The Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar is all set to be developed as a modern football facility as per FIFA norms at an estimated cost of Rs 48 crore. This was stated at a meeting convened by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Baseer Ahmad Khan, to take stock of the activities of Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council.
Khan, who is also head of Divisional Sports Committee, was informed that Bakshi stadium will be developed according to the norms of world governing body FIFA, in 12 working months, an official spokesman said.

Thiagarajan Notable Tamil litterateur popularly known as Asokamitran passes away :
A noted Tamil litterateur, Thiagarajan, popularly known as Asokamitran passed away in Chennai last night after a brief illness. He was 85. A well known novelist and essayist, Ashokamitran was noted for his subtlety and refreshing creativity in expression. His work "Appavin Snegithargal", a collection of short stories won him the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1996.
"18-vadhu Atchakkodu", translated into English as "The Eighteenth Parallel", is one of his highly acclaimed novels. Many of his works have been translated into English and European languages.
