Earth Day being observed today
Earth Day in being observed today all over the world with the message to protect environment. On the Occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Earth Day is a day of gratitude to Mother Earth and a day to reiterate firm resolve to keep the planet clean and green. In a series of tweets, he said, it is the duty of the people to live in harmony with the plants, animals and birds we share the Earth with. He said, people owe this to the future generations. Mr Modi hoped that this year’s theme of 'Environmental and Climate Literacy ’ helps create awareness on protecting nature & natural resources.

US-India ties become stronger over last few decades: Jaitley
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said, the US-India ties have significantly improved over the last few decades, becoming more stronger and matured that defied changes in the governments in both the countries. Speaking at a reception hosted by India's Ambassador to the US Navtej Sarna today, Mr. Jaitley said, the Indian Government is looking forward to working with the Trump Administration to strengthen the various dimensions of the bilateral ties. Stressing that India-US relationship has bipartisan support in both the countries, he said, in one sense it is a bipartisan relationship. Mr Jaitley yesterday met US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, the first cabinet-level interaction between the two countries under the Trump Administration. He said, the US-India relationship over the last few decades has significantly improved.

India becoming hub of international arbitration: CJI JS Khehar
Chief Justice of India, J S Khehar has said, India is becoming a hub of international arbitration and the government's initiative to work towards zero interference in the process will promote confidence among foreign traders. Speaking at a two-day seminar 'Engaging Asia Arbitration Summit' in New Delhi today, Justice Khehar said, potential for international arbitration is increasing due to foreign investment. The CJI said, government's 'Make in India' scheme will make the country a favoured market among the emerging ones.

Ensure no Dengue or Chikungunya cases occur this year: Delhi High Court
Delhi High Court has directed the AAP government and civic bodies to ensure that no dengue or chikungunya cases occur this year in the national capital. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice Anu Malhotra asked the agencies to inform it about what preventive steps they have taken in comparison to last year with regard to breeding of dengue mosquitoes. Expressing concern over the numerous deaths in 2016, the court said the authorities concerned should have a policy, instead of shifting the blame on each other, to stop recurrence of mosquito-borne tropical diseases.

Cubbon Park, Lalbagh to take up leaf composting to clear dry leaves
To solve the problem of getting rid off fallen leaves, the Horticulture Department in Bengaluru has set up eight leaf composting machines in Cubbon Park. Another park, Lalbagh is also planning to compost leaf waste, as it is almost impossible to clear dry leaves spread across over 200-300 acres of area. Speaking on the development, Joint Director of Horticulture Dr Jagadeesh stated that the department decided to try the method on the suggestion of the solid waste management expert Ramakanth. He further stated that if it works then they would be opting for bigger composting pits.

India successfully test fires land-attack version of BrahMos
Indian Navy on Friday successfully conducted the first test fire of the land-attack variant of the BrahMos supersonic missile. The missile, with a 400 km range, was launched at sea off the Andaman and Nicobar islands. This is reportedly the first sea-to-land missile test in the country and also the first time the land-attack variant was fired from a ship.

UP govt to set up 40 Yoga wellness centres in 40 districts
Uttar Pradesh government has decided to set up 40 Yoga wellness centres in 40 districts during current financial year. Of them 23 will be set up at Ayurvedic hospitals, 12 at homeopathic and 7 at Unani hospitals and colleges. State will seek assistance from union government to set up such centres in remaining 35 districts. After viewing presentation of Ayush department yesterday evening, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also announced to start post graduate courses at Government Ayurvedic college and hospital Varanasi, Unani college Allahabad, Government Homeopathy college Allahabad and TT college Lucknow. He has directed the officials to set up treatment centres at Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Varanasi, Saharanpur and Banda under Ayurvedic and Unani systems of treatment.

Air India lowers elderly travel concession age limit to 60
National carrier Air India has lowered the age limit for availing travel concession under its scheme for senior citizens to 60. Earlier, the age limit for availing this concession was 63 years. Under the scheme, Indian citizens aged 60 years on the date of commencement of journey are entitled to a 50% discount on basic fare of economy class seats.

The governments of India and South Korea signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 21 April 2017 to strengthen their bilateral cooperation in defence shipbuilding. The governments of India and South Korea signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 21 April 2017 to strengthen their bilateral cooperation in defence shipbuilding. The agreement was signed between Ashok Kumar Gupta, Secretary (Defence Production) and Chang Myong Jin, Korea’s Minister of Defence Acquisition and Programme Administration in New Delhi. According to the MoU, the two countries under the broader term of a special strategic partnership will be nominating one shipyard each for the project.

UN Secretary General Antonia Guterres hold meeting with Tump
United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres held a brief first meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House, ahead of a visit of Security Council Ambassadors to Washington next week. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the UN chief had an interesting and constructive discussion on cooperation between the United States and the United Nations. UN Security Council Ambassadors will hold a luncheon meeting with Trump on Monday and meet with US lawmakers on Capitol Hill. Those meetings are likely to focus on North Korea, Syria, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and US cuts to UN funding that have raised concerns about the US administration's support for the world body.

Royal agencies of Thailand brought under control of King Vajiralongkorn
The Parliament of Thailand agreed to transfer control of royal agencies from the government to the new King Maha Vajiralongkorn. Members of the military-appointed legislature said that the decision was taken in a confidential session. The session was not broadcasted in public. As per information, the organisations that will be transferred include the Royal Aide de Camp Department, the Bureau of the Royal Household, the Office of His Majesty's Principal Private Secretary, the Royal Guard Command and the Royal Court Security Police.

India wins elections to two UN subsidiary bodies
India on 21 April 2017 won the elections to two subsidiary bodies of a United Nations (UN) Organisations. These two organisations are Committee for Programme and Coordination (CPC) and International Narcotics Control Board. India, along with 12 other members, was elected for the period of three years to the Committee for Programme and Coordination (CPC), a subsidiary body of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

1st India-Indonesia Energy Forum held in Jakarta
The First Indian-Indonesia Energy Forum was held in Jakarta, Indonesia. The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy and Mines Piyush Goyal and Indonesia’s Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Ignasius Jonan participated in the forum.

Britain achieves its first ever coal-free day
For the first time since the Industrial Revolution, Britain witnessed a full day powered by energy generated without the use of coal, according to the country's National Grid. Its only coal-fired plant that had been up and running went offline on Thursday (April 20). Britain will shut its last coal power station by 2025 to meet its climate change commitments.

EU, India agree to strengthen counter-terrorism cooperation
India and European Union have agreed on the need to strengthen the security cooperation particularly on the issue of counter-terrorism. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Ms. Federica Mogherini today called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The two leaders discussed regional and global developments of mutual interest. Mr. Modi recalled his successful visit to Brussels in March last year for the India-EU Summit, and said that he is looking forward to the next summit to be held in India in October this year.


US defence chief in Israel for talks on Iran, Syria
US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis visited Israel today for talks expected to focus on Iran, Syria and the two countries' close strategic relations despite recent tensions with Barack Obama's adminstration. Mattis held talks with Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman this morning, followed by meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin. Israel and the United States have long had close strategic ties, with Washington providing Israel more than 3 billion dollars per year in defence aid and President Donald Trump pledging unstinting support for the country.

World Bank to give $37.5 cr for National Waterway-1 on Ganga
The World Bank has approved $37.5 crore loan for capacity augmentation of National Waterway-1 (NW-1) on the river Ganga under the Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP). The project will enable commercial navigation of vessels with a capacity of 1,500-2,000 deadweight tonnes along a 1,390-km stretch. The NW-1 passes through Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

TripAdvisor presents Bali with 2017 Travelers' Choice Awards
US-based travel reviewer website TripAdvisor presented its 2017 World's Best Destination Award to Indonesia's resort island of Bali. TripAdvisor's 2017 World's Best Destination Award for Bali was announced in March 2017, resulting from its traveller choice programme conducted in a 12-month period. With this, Bali became the first Asian destination to earn the title. In addition, TripAdvisor also put Lombok, a destination near Bali, as one of the best 10 Asian destinations for the year.

Golfers Aditi Ashok, S.S.P Chawrasia and Ali Sher on 20 April 2017 won the second edition of the Golf Industry Association (GIA) Awards 2017. Aditi Ashok bagged the award for Outstanding Achievement. Aditi finished second in the Ladies European Tour (LET) order of merit in 2016. SSP Chawrasia bagged the award for the Men's Player of the Year (2016). He successfully defended his Indian Open title and had two victories on Golf Tour when he also won his first overseas title at the Resorts World Manila Masters.

Rohan Bopanna & Pablo Cuevas enter semifinals of Monte Carlo MastersSports News Heading
Rohan Bopanna and his Uruguayan partner Pablo Cuevas have entered the semifinal of the ATP Monte Carlo Masters event in Monaco. In the quarter finals yesterday, the unseeded Indo-Uruguayan pair defeated top seeded Henri Kontinen from Finland and Australia's John Peers 3-6, 6-3, 13-11 to reach the semifinal. Bopanna and Cuevas will now take on H. Nys of France and Romanian R. Arneodo in the semi-final today. The Monte Carlo Masters is fifth tournament Bopanna is playing with Cuevas and this was their best performance together after joining forces at the beginning of the season.

Velvan enters in final of West Rand Open Squash tournament in Johannesburg

In Squash, Velavan Senthilkumar reached the final of the West Rand Open Squash tournament in Roodepoort, Johannesburg. In the semifinal, Senthilkumar, who won the British Junior Open earlier this year, ousted fourth-seed Tristan Eysele of South Africa in straight games 16-14, 15-13, 11-7 last night. This is the second successive PSA event final that the 19-year-old Chennai boy will be playing in the space of 10 days. Interestingly, Senthilkumar will be up against Egyptian Mohammed Elsherbini, whom he lost to in the final of the Parkview Open in Johannesburg.
