World Mental Health Day: 10 October
World Mental Health Day is observed annually on 10 October. This year theme is ‘Psychological First Aid’. The day is annually observed with an aim to raise awareness about mental health issues around the world and mobilising efforts in support of mental health.
MP to launch ‘Lalima Abhiyan’ to make state anaemia free
i. Aiming to make Madhya Pradesh anaemia-free, the state government has decided to launch a ‘Lalima Abhiyan’ on November 1, an official statement said. Under the campaign, free iron folic acid tablets will be provided in anganwadis, academic institutions and hospitals. According to figures, 52.5% women in the age group of 15-49 years and 25.5% men suffer from anaemia in India.
Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh launches Samajwadi smart phone scheme
i. Ahead of the 2017 Assembly elections, Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav on Monday launched the free Samajwadi Smartphone scheme in the state. Any Uttar Pradesh resident – above 18 years, who has cleared Class X, and is earning less than ₹6 lakh annually, can register for the smartphone. The distribution of the phones will begin next year after the elections.
SSB seizes synthetic drug worth Rs. 6 cr on Indo-Nepal Border
i. Synthetic drugs worth 6 crore rupees in the international market were seized by the Sashastra Seema Bal, SSB on the Indo-Nepal Border in West Bengal. Home Ministry in a release said, troops of SSB deployed at Ranidanga in West Bengal seized two Boxes of Methamphetamine synthetic drug yesterday weighing 1.1 kilogram and apprehended one person, coming from Nepal, with the drugs.
ii. It said, the seized drug is the purest form of Methamphetamine, a strong stimulant and is more potent than cocaine. The seized contraband and apprehended person have been handed over to the local Police and investigation is underway.
18th edition of Maruti Suzuki Raid de Himalaya flagged off
i. The 18th edition of Maruti Suzuki Raid de Himalaya, the world’s highest arena rally was flagged off from Manali in Himachal Pradesh last evening although the participant vehicles proceed today morning for their toughest destination. The rally will cross the challenging route of Kaza, traversing through Sarchu towards Leh over the course of seven days. The route traverses around 2000 kms in the Himalayas.
Centre provides over Rs 1600 crore to Railways for bio toilets& CCTV cameras
i. Railways has received 1655 crore rupees from the government for the installation of CCTVs at stations and bio-toilets in trains across the country. Railway Board Chairman AK Mital said, 1155 crore rupees has been given to the railways for installing bio-toilets in trains under Swachh Bharat Mission and 500 crore rupees under Nirbhaya Fund for putting all major stations under CCTV surveilance, for enhancing passenger safety and security.
ii. Railway Board Chairman said, 40 thousand bio-toilets are being installed in trains and 30 thousand more will be installed by the end of the current fiscal. He said, all new proposed trains like Tejas, Humsafar will be equipped with bio-toilets. railways has set the target of making the entire network as discharge-free zone by September 2019.
Nirmala Sitharaman Launches Enhanced Foreign Trade Data Dashboard
i. Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today said exports will gradually increase. Mrs.Sitharam launched a new enhanced Dashboard on Foreign Trade Data as part of the initiative of the ministry to provide easy access to the public with regard to India’s export, import and balance of trade data in an analytical format, over time and space.
ii. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said technology will be used for transparent decision making and reaching out to people using real time data. She said the Dashboard is an improved version of the earlier EXIM Analaytics Dashboard developed with many added features.
Haryana govt to link Public Distribution System to Aadhar cards to make it corruption-free& transparent
i. Haryana government is planning to link the Public Distribution System (PDS) to Aadhar cards to make it corruption-free and inject transparency in the distribution of ration. Addressing a public meeting at Hasanpur in Palwal district yesterday, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattarsaid those registered in the ration card will be able to get ration only after marking biometric attendance.
Public money used for 3.65cr gold donation to temple
i. Telangana CM K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) on Sunday donated an 11.7-kilogramme gold crown worth 3.65 crore to Bhadrakali Temple in Warangal, using money from public exchequer. Reportedly, KCR had taken a vow in his personal capacity to donate gold to the temple after the formation of Telangana state. The Opposition has slammed KCR for misusing public money for religious practices.
Colombian President will donate Nobel prize money to conflict victims
i. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos has said he will donate the money from the Nobel Peace prize to help the victims of the 52-year conflict in his country. He was awarded the prize for reaching a peace agreement with the Farc rebel group last month.
ii. The deal was rejected a few days later by Colombian voters in a referendum. He made the announcement in the city of Bojaya, in the north-western region of Choco, after taking part religious ceremony for people affected by the conflict.
INS Sumitra Visits Surabaya
i. In pursuit of India’s ‘Act East’ policy and outreach to friendly countries, the Indian Navy’s Offshore Patrol Vessel Sumitra, visited Surabaya, Indonesia, as part of its deployment to the South Western Pacific Ocean.
The visit is aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and enhancing maritime security cooperation between the two countries.
ii. India and Indonesia have extensive historic, cultural and maritime linkages. Regular maritime interaction through training exchanges, port calls, PASSEXs, biannual Coordinated Patrols (CORPATs) and the recently initiated annual bilateral maritime exercise, have reinforced the historic maritime relationship.
Sumitra’s visit to Surabaya would further strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries and contribute to overall maritime security in the region.
eBay paid 9 crore tax in UK on 9,000 crore revenues
i. Online retailer eBay paid £1.1million (around 9 crore) in tax in the UK last year, despite telling US investors that Britain was its second largest market, generating revenues of £1.1billion (over 9000 crore). The company appears to have reduced its tax bill by using a corporate structure that routes advertising fees from British sellers through an overseas company.
BHEL commissions another 660 Mw thermal unit in UP
i. State-run BHEL has commissioned 660 Mw coal-based supercritical thermal power unit in Uttar Pradesh.
The unit has been commissioned at the 3×660 Mw Prayagraj super thermal power project, located in Bara tehsil in Allahabad district of Uttar Pradesh.
ii. The project is owned by Prayagraj Power Generation Company Ltd (PPGCL), a subsidiary company of Jaiprakash Power Ventures Ltd.
Renu Pall appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Austria
Former Indian Foreign Service officer Ms. Renu Pall has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Austria. It was announced by Ministry of External Affairs. Austria is a German-speaking country in Central Europe, characterized by mountain villages and baroque architecture.

Rekha won a National Award for ‘Umrao Jaan’
Actress Rekha, who turns 62 today, won her first and only National Film Award in 1982 in the ‘Best Actress’ category for the film ‘Umrao Jaan’. The actress portrayed the character ‘Amiran’, who becomes known as the courtesan ‘UmraoJaan’ in the 1981 film. Rekha was also honoured with the ‘Padma Shri’ by the Government of India in 2010.
Nobel prize in Economics 2016 awarded to Oliver Hart and Bengt Holmstrom
Two U.S-based economists, Oliver Hart (U.K) of Harvard University and Bengt Holmstrom (Finland) of MIT have been awarded the ‘Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel’ for their contributions to contract theory. Last year Nobel prize in Economics was awarded to Angus Deaton “for his analysis of consumption, poverty, and welfare”.
Chandigarh Airports Entity Won IBC Award
Chandigarh International Airports Limited (CHIAL), a Joint Venture Company of Airports Authority of India and States of Punjab and Haryana, has been conferred with IBC award and Trophy for excellence in built environment in infrastructure projects for “New Integrated Terminal Building of Chandigarh International Airport for the year 2014-15” at 21st Annual Convention Inaugural function in New Delhi.

3 females elected to AMU students’ union for 1st time
In a first, three female students were elected to the Aligarh Muslim University Students’ Union (AMUSU) on Sunday. While Faizul Hasan has been elected as the President, three female students, Labiba Sherwani, Sadaf Rasool and Ghazala Ahmad, were elected as the cabinet members. Twenty-three candidates had contested for ten cabinet seats.
CORPAT Maritime Exercise Starts
i. In a demonstration of India’s commitment to its ties with Indonesia and to the maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region, Indian Naval Ship Karmuk, along with a Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft participated in the 28th India-Indonesia Coordinated Patrol and Second Bilateral Maritime Exercise in the Andaman Sea.
Defence relations between India and Indonesia have been growing steadily with regular joint activities and interactions between the Armed Forces of the two countries.
ii. The two navies have been carrying out Coordinated Patrols (CORPAT) on respective sides of the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) twice a year since 2002, with the aim of keeping this vital part of the Indian Ocean Region safe and secure for commercial shipping, International trade and legitimate marine activities.
The CORPAT has strengthened understanding and interoperability between the two navies and promoted net maritime security in the region.
The bilateral cooperation has increased significantly with the scheduling of the Second Bilateral Maritime Exercise along with the 28th edition of the CORPAT.
JituRai awarded ‘Champion of Champions’ title by ISSF
i. Indian shooter JituRai has been awarded the ‘Champion of Champions’ title for pistol shooting in 2016, by the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF). The shooter, who had five podium positions and nine top-eight finishes, including two World Cup titles in Bangkok and Maribor, has been awarded the honour for his exceptional performances on the international circuit.
Indians clinches Russian Open Grand Prix title
India’s 19-year-old shuttler Ruthvika Shivani Gadde won the women’s singles title at the Russian Open in Vladivostok. Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N Sikki Reddy added to India’s tally by winning the mixed doubles title at the event.
British tennis player Andy Murray beat Bulgaria’s GrigorDimitrov in straight sets to win the China Open on 09 October 2016. Dimitrov went down 6-4, 7-6 (7/2). This is Murray’s 5th singles title of 2016 and 40th of his career

Former boxing champion Aaron Pryor dies at 60
American boxer Aaron Pryor died on 09 October 2016 at the age of 60 after a long battle with heart disease. Pryor built a 39-1 record with 35 knockouts during his career. His biggest moments in the ring were his two junior welterweight victories over Arguello.
