    ü National Technology Day
    President to attend National Technology Day Celebrations today:
    ·       President Pranab Mukherjee will attend the National Technology Day Celebrations in New Delhi.
    ·       Union Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Harsh Vardhan will inaugurate the Science and Technology Exhibition.
    ·       Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Y.S. Chowdary would also be present during the event.
    ·       The National Technology Day is being celebrated every year on May 11 by the Ministry of Science& Technology to commemorate achievements of Innovation and Technology in the country.
    ·       This year’s theme is Technology enablers of Startup India.
    Gujarat announces ‘Agri Business Policy-2016’
    ·       Inaugurating Krishi Mahotsav, Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel announced the ‘Agri Business Policy-2016’.
    ·       The policy announced subsidies for food processing projects and loans for those wanting to establish food processing units.
    India, Mauritius sign pact to curb tax evasion
    ·       India and Mauritius signed a pact to amend the Double Taxation Avoidance Convention, a Finance Ministry release said.
    ·       It will give India rights to tax capital gains from the sale of shares in India by companies registered in Mauritius from April 2017.
    Government to set up AIIMS-like institute for Ayurveda:
    ·       The first AIIMS-like institution for Ayurveda will be inaugurated in Delhi within three months, to popularise the Indian system of medicine, the Government told the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
    ·       The All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) will also have a 200-bed hospital.
    Delhi Police to set up ‘deradicalisation’ centre:
    ·       The Delhi Police will soon set up a “deradicalisation” centre, which would track down youth being radicalised through social media and provide them with counselling, said Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Arvind Deep.
    Nagaland to teach financial literacy in schools:
    ·       Nagaland became the first state in the Northeast to introduce a financial literacy course through the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in schools.
    ·       The curriculum includes topics like income and expenditure, financial planning and money management.
    ·       The course would help inculcate in students the habit of financial management and ultimately lead to country’s economic growth, officials said.
    Government amending Act to check false medicine ads:
    ·       The government said it has initiated the process to amend Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Ads) Act to bring Ayush medicines under its purview in order to check misleading advertisements.
    ·       The amendments seek to bring the traditional medicine systems like Yoga and Ayurveda under the purview of the law, which makes giving out misleading advertisements a cognizable offence.
    Jammu&Kashmir bans non-biodegradable items in government offices:
    ·       Jammu and Kashmir has banned the use of non-biodegradable consumables including items made of plastic in government offices and official functions.
    ·       Officials were also asked to ensure the use of non-plastic material and biodegradable substitutes in their departments and subordinate units.​
    ·       A circular was issued last week to implement the ban with immediate effect, officials said.
    Indian Navy decommissions fighter planes Sea Harriers:
    ·       Indian Navy has decommissioned its fleet of iconic Sea Harriers. The Naval Air Squadron 300 – I N A S 300, popularly known as ‘white tigers’, today de-inducted these fighter aircrafts and replaced them with new generation Mig 29 K fighters in a touching ceremony on INS Hansa near Vasco.
    ·       Designed and manufactured by British Aerospace, Sea Harrier is a naval Short-Vertical Take-Off and Landing Jet Fighter, used for both reconnaissance and strike.
    ·       Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R. K. Dhowan informed that the newly inducted Mig 29ks will be operational from INS Vikramaditya aircraft carrier and have already acquired long duration training. Presently 45 MIG 29k are being introduced.
    Indian Navy launches underwater vigil system in Visakhapatnam:
    ·       Indian Navy has launched the state-of-the-art Harbour Defence Systems, viz., Integrated Underwater Harbour Defence and Surveillance System (IUHDSS) and Mine Warfare Data Centre (MWDC) which would enhance the Navy’s surveillance capability and response to security threats at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam yesterday.
    ·       Vice Admiral HCS Bisht, AVSM Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command inaugurated the two systems.
    Harish Rawat wins Uttarakhand floor test:
    ·       Congress’ Harish Rawat has won the floor test held in the Uttarakhand Assembly, receiving 33 of the 61 qualified members’ votes, the Supreme Court informed today.
    ·       The SC said that Rawat can take charge as the state’s Chief Minister. Meanwhile, the Centre announced that it will lift President’s Rule, which was imposed in the state on March 27.
    Government approves Gilead’s Hepatitis C drug patent:
    ·       The Indian patent authority has granted approval to US-based Gilead Sciences’ patent for its Hepatitis C drug Sovaldi.
    ·       Notably, the patent for the drug, priced at $1,000 a pill, was rejected by the authority last year on the basis that it reflected only minor changes from the previous formulation, and the firm already had tie-ups with manufacturers in India.
    India developing $5 bn infra projects in South Asia:
    ·       India is currently developing infrastructure projects worth $5 billion in the South Asian region to improve connectivity, Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Dassaid.
    ·       The projects include road corridors connecting India with Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan through West Bengal, and India-Myanmar through Manipur, he said, adding India is also assisting the countries with power projects.
    Telecom project for Lakshadweep, Andaman:
    ·       The inter-ministerial Telecom Commission has approved a proposal to improve communication facilities in Lakshadweep and Andaman& Nicobar Islands (ANI).
    ·       Under the project, a submarine optic fibre cable will be laid between Chennai and Port Blair, and to five other ANI islands.
    ·       At least 880.03 crore is expected to be spent from theUniversal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) on this.
    Kendriya Vidyalayas to include PETA programme:
    ·       The Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan today directed all its schools to integrate ‘Compassionate Citizen’, a programme designed by animal rights group PETA, into their curriculum.
    ·       The programme, endorsed by the Animal Welfare Board of India and CBSE, is aimed at teaching children to be kind to animals. ‘Compassionate Citizen’ will be included as an extracurricular activity or a one-day workshop.
    Government allows 100% FDI in ARCs via automatic route:
    ·       The government has relaxed FDI norms for asset reconstruction companies (ARCs), allowing 100% FDI through the automatic route, as per Budget announcements.
    ·       Earlier, 49% investment was permitted through automatic route while investors had to obtain government approval to increase their stake in ARCs to over 49%.
    ·       ARCs reconstruct assets and liabilities of other firms to make them saleable.
    Government distributes 61k crore through DBT scheme:
    ·       Government officials revealed that around 61,000 crore was distributed to more than 30 crore beneficiaries using Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme last year.
    ·       DBT helped remove duplicate beneficiaries across welfare schemes like PAHAL, officials told PM Narendra Modi in a high-level meeting.
    ·       They added that over 10,000 crore was saved by deleting 1.6 crore fake ration cards.
    Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte wins the Philippines Presidential Election:
         Anti-crime candidate and mayor of Davao Rodrigo “Digong” Duterte won the presidential election of the Philippines held on 9 May 2016.
         With 91.53 percent of votes counted so far, he is set for a landslide victory with 15.36 million votes.
         He is followed by President Benigno Aquino’s choice Mar Roxas with 9.27 million votes and his closest rival Grace Poe with 8.6 million votes.
    Norway sets up Panama Papers hotline:
    ·       Norway police has created a telephone hotline for people seeking to admit to tax evasion related to the Panama Papers documents leak.
    ·       People voluntarily disclosing information can expect their sentences to be reduced by a third compared to those who get caught, Norwegian police said.
    ·       Earlier,11.5 million documents from Panamanian firm Mossack Fonseca were made openly accessible.
    Obama 1st serving US Prez to visit Hiroshima:
    ·       US President Barack Obama will visit Hiroshima during a trip to Japan and Vietnam later in May, in thefirst visit to Hiroshima by a serving US President.
    ·       Obama will be accompanied byJapanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe when he visits the city, the White House said. The atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945 killed 1,40,000 people.
    France to set up deradicalisation centres:
    ·       France’s government said that it would set up 12 deradicalisation centres to combat home-grown terrorism.
    Pondicherry Varsity VC sends her resignation
    ·       Pondicherry University Vice-Chancellor Chandra Krishnamurthy, on whom UGC launched a probe on charges of academic fraud, has sent her resignation to the President’s office.
    ·       This comes a month after she sent a rebuttal to the government rejecting all charges against her after she was served a show-cause notice by the President last year. The government is currently examining the resignation.
    Senior advocate Atma Ram Nadkarni appointed Additional Solicitor General:
    ·       Senior advocate of Bombay High Court Atma Ram Nadkarni was appointed as Additional Solicitor General (ASG).
    ·       The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the appointment of Nadkarni as Additional Solicitor General in Supreme Court for a period of three years.
    ICICI Prudential appoints Sankaran Naren as executive director:
    ·       ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company has appointed Sankaran Naren as a Director on the Board of ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company, with effect from April 2016.
    ·       Prior to the new appointment currently his role as the CIO who oversees the investment functions across the mutual fund and international advisory business.
    RBI to issue 1000 banknotes with inset letter R:
    ·       The RBI has announced that it will shortly issue banknotes of 1,000 denomination with inset letter ‘R’ in both the number panels.
    ·       The banknotes will also have on the obverse, all other security features, including ascending size of numerals, bleed lines and enlarged identification mark, while the year of printing ‘2016’ will be printed on the reverse, the RBI said.
    RBI cancelled Certificate of Registration of four NBFCs:
    ·       The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cancelled the certificate of registration of the four Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs).
    ·       RBI cancelled their certificates in exercise of the powers conferred on it underSection 45-IA (6) of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.

    Walmart sues Visa on PIN-based transactions

    ·       US-based retail corporation Walmart Stores has filed a lawsuit against Visa, saying the payments network operator was resisting the use of personal identification numbers (PINs) by customers for purchases made on debit cards at its stores.
    ·       Visa is currently using chip cards verified by signatures to validate transactions.
    Quikr acquires on-demand beauty startup Salosa:
    ·       Classifieds platform Quikr acquired web-based on-demand home beauty and styling startup Salosa for an undisclosed amount.
    ·       Salosa has been a partner of QuikrServices, Quikr’s hyperlocal on-demand services marketplace.
    ·       Founded in 2015 by former Procter& Gamble executives Piyush Dhanuka and Anurag Nair, Salosa currently operates in Gurgaon and some parts of Delhi.
    On-demand truck platform Moovo acquires GoGoods:

    ·       Delhi based on-demand mini-truck aggregator Moovo on Monday acquired Patna-based logistics startup GoGoods for an undisclosed amount in an all stock deal. The five-member team of GoGoods will join Moovo.
    ·       Launched in December 2014 by Nishant Kumar and Anurag Satyarth, GoGoods aggregates trucks in Patna and Ranchi for shifting homes, warehouse necessities, home deliveries and event management.
    Malaysian firm to buy 30% stake in GMR Energy:
    ·       Bengaluru-based GMR Infrastructure said Tenaga Nasional, Malaysia’s largest power utility, will invest $300 million (around ₹2,000 crore) for a 30% stake in selected generation assets of its subsidiary GMR Energy.
    ·       The proceeds will be used for the repayment of corporate debt, the company said.
    ·       Notably, GMR Infra’s gross consolidated debt stood at ₹43,439 crore as of September 2015.
    Amazon launches its online video service

    ·       Amazon launched its online video service, called Amazon Video Direct, that lets users post videos to its website and earn through advertising, royalties and other sources.
    ·       The service will make the content available to rent, own or view for free with ads. This move puts the company in direct competition with Google-owned YouTube.
    Google launches free WiFi at 5 railway stations:
    ·       Google announced the launch of its free public WiFi service at Patna, Ujjain, Guwahati, Allahabad, and Jaipur railway stations.
    ·       The service is now available in 15 stations across India. This is part of Google’s collaborative project with the Indian Railways to provide high-speed public WiFi at 100 railway stations across the country by 2016-end.
    Infosys Foundation signs pact with IISER:

    ·       Bengaluru based IT major’s arm Infosys Foundation has signed a pact with Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER., Pune) to pursue ‘high quality’ education for economically weaker section students.
    ·       The MoU aims to provide high quality science education and research through scholarships, fellowships and travel awards also creating equal opportunities for students from poorer background and advancing the quality of research done at Indian institutions.
    ·       The foundation set aside a corpus fund of Rs 5 crore named as The Infosys Foundation Endowment Fund that will continue in perpetuity to benefit a minimum of 50 students annually as part of the MoU.
    Australian women cricketers raise $4k for paralympians:
    ·       The Australian Women’s team managed to raise $4,200 from the 2016 ICC Women T20 World Cup to help the Australia Paralympic Team reach the Paralympics in Rio de Janeirothis September.
    ·       For each boundary the Australian Women’s team hit during the tournament in India, a $50 donation was made by the 15-member strong Australian squad.
    Rio-bound Indian athletes to get 3 lakh bonus:

    ·       The Indian Ministry of Sports has decided to offer a sum of 1 lakh every month from May to July to every athlete who has qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
    ·        A total of 89 Indian athletes going to Rio will benefit from this decision taken by the federations in conjunction with Rakesh Gupta, India’s Chef-de-mission for the Rio Olympics.
    Shashank Manohar resigns as BCCI President:
    ·       Shashank Manohar resigned as the President of the BCCI and also as the ICC Chairman.
    ·       He is expected to contest for the ICC elections this month to become the international governing body’s first ever independent Chairman.
    ·       Notably, Manohar was appointed as the BCCI President in October 2015 after the demise of then President Jagmohan Dalmiya.
