    Anti Child Labour day: June 12th

    ·       The International Labour Organization (ILO) launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 to focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it.
    ·  Every year on 12 June, the World Day brings together governments, employers and workers organizations, civil society, as well as millions of people from around the world to highlight the plight of child labourers and what can be done to help them.
    ·       The theme for the year 2016 is “End child labour in supply chains – It’s everyone’s business!”
    President leaves for 6-day tour of 3 African nations

    ·       President Pranab Mukherjee today embarked on a six-day visit to three African nations — Ghana, Ivory Coast and Namibia — to boost trade ties with these countries known for having “solid political system, where democracy has taken roots”.
    ·       This is the maiden visit of any Indian President to Ghana and Ivory Coast whereas to Namibia, such a visit comes after two decades.
    ·       Even though Mukherjee has toured a number of countries in the continent, he will be visiting these countries for the first time in his long political career.
    West Bengal government to offer rice at Rs 2 per kg to sex workers, HIV patients
    ·       The West Bengal government has now decided to give rice at Rs two per kg to sex workers and poor HIV patients in the state.
    ·       In this initiative of government all deaf and dumb children in various homes and poor leoprosy pateints will also be included. About one lakh beneficiaries from across the state will be identified for the purpose, the minister said in an interview.
    ·       “This project is the brainchild of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. For the first time in the country, a state government has decided that sex workers and poor HIV patients will be given rice at Rs 2 per Kg,” state Food and Supplies Minister Jyotipriyo Mullick told media.
    Gujarat island gets electricity for first time

    ·       Shiyal Bet, an island in Gujarat’s Amreli District got electricity supply for the first time, nearly seven decades after independence.
    ·       With electricity reaching the island through a 6-km undersea cable, every part of Gujarat is reportedly now connected to electricity.
    ·       The 6,000-strong population on Shiyal Bet had been dependent on kerosene oil lamps or battery-run lights till now.
    10-day economic blockade begins in Manipur
    ·       A 10-day economic blockade on all National Highways passing through the tribal territories of Manipur began on Saturday.
    ·       Tribal leaders deployed volunteers along the highways to block incoming loaded vehicles.
    ·       The ban, imposed by tribal bodies under the Joint Action Committee against three ‘anti-tribal’ bills passed by the Manipur Assembly, also stopped all national projects in the region.
    Central Government approves Rs.300 cr for boosting tourism in UP

    ·       Aimed at boosting tourism in Uttar Pradesh, the Centre has approved projects worth Rs.300 crore for developing the Ramayana, Krishna and Buddhist circuits in the state.
    ·       The Ramayana circuit comprises destinations like Ayodhya and Chitrakoot, while sites like Mathura, Vrindavan, and Govardhan fall under the Krishna circuit. The Buddhist circuit consists of destinations like Sarnath and Kushinagar.
    Andhra launches IT irrigation project management

    ·       Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu launched an IT-enabled management system for irrigation projects in the state.
    ·       The system will enable regular assessment of the progress of the ongoing projects in the state and help in monitoring water storage levels and flow of various rivers and reservoirs, the government said.
    Andhra Pradesh government to invest Rs.2,400 cr for tourism boost
    ·       The state tourism board in Andhra Pradesh is planning to invest Rs.2,400 crores for developing adventure activities in the state including water sports like parasailing, speed boating and water skiing.
    ·       The state also plans to open 33 new hotels and has associated with global brands including the Taj group, ITC group, Accor group Holiday Inn Associates and JW Marriott Associates.
    Arvind Kejriwal Sets Up Committee to Look Into Matters Related To Delhi Water Bodies
    ·       Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has constituted a high-level committee under the chairmanship of PWD minister Satyendra Jain to look into the matters related to water bodies in the national capital.
    ·       Water Minister Kapil Mishra and Environment and Forests Minister, Imran Hussain, will be the members of this committee while the CEO of Delhi Jal Board, Keshav Chandra, will be the Member Secretary of this committee.
    Sikkim becomes India’s first State to launch open government data portal

    ·       Sikkim became the first state in India to have an open government data portal linked ‘sikkim.data.gov.in’. The portal was launched by Lok Sabha MP, P D Rai and also launched Open Government Data Platform (Sikkim).
    ·       The portal has been developed by Government of Sikkim’s Information Technology Department and NIC team from Delhi.
    ·       The open government data portal facilitates free use, reuse and redistribution of data produced or commissioned by the government or government controlled entities by anyone.
    China Is The Biggest And Best ‘Abuser’: Donald Trump

    ·       Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has alleged that China is the “biggest and best abuser” as it was dumping its goods into the US, stealing intellectual property and imposing hefty taxes on American companies doing business in that country.
    China, Nepal connected with optical fibre link
    ·       In a first, China and Nepal are now connected by an optical fibre network through the Geelong (Keyrong)-Rasuwgadhi border point.
    ·       The network has ended Nepal’s sole dependence on India for connecting it with global telecom services, Xinhua reported.
    ·       Nepal Telecom (NT) on Saturday said its optical fibre network has been connected with that of China Telecom Corporation Limited.
    Government drafting separate bankruptcy law for financial companies: Jayant Sinha

    ·       The government is planning to introduce a new insolvency law for banks and other financial institutions that will ensure the quick closure of the stressed firms while safeguarding the interests of small savers, Union Minister Jayant Sinha said.
    ·       The Insolvency and Bankruptcy code, passed in the Parliament in May, aims to amend laws pertaining to reorganisation and insolvency of firms.
    Contest announced to design Postal Bank logo
    ·       IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad launched a contest, with ₹​50,000 prize money, to design the logo and come up with the tagline for the newly announced India Post Payments Bank.
    ·       Users can submit their designs on the MyGov portal before 9 July, 2016. The designs will be selected based on rankings from user polls and the postal department.
    ‘Gujarat Connecting India to World’ to be the theme of ‘Vibrant Gujarat 2017’

    ·       The theme for Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit 2017 will be ‘Gujarat Connecting India to the World’.The summit is likely to be held in the first month of 2017.
    ·       “Gujarat boasts of being one of the leading states in manufacturing sector and is recognised as India’s growth engine. We are going much beyond this time as our motto for next Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors’ Summit to be held on January 10-13, 2017 will be ‘Gujarat Connecting India to the World’,” said Arvind Agarwal, additional chief secretary of state’s Industries and Mines department.
    FCI inks pact with Adani Group
    ·       Food Corporation of India (FCI), a state-run organization has signed an agreement with the Adani group for construction of two silos to store wheat, at an estimated cost of about Rs 80 crore.
    ·       These two silos would have a combined storage capacity of 75,000 tons. The silos will be designed, built, financed and operated by the private partner Adani group, while it will be owned by the FCI.
    ·       A silo is a steel structure, comprising large size cylindrical shape bins normally each with a capacity of about 12,500 tons, where grains can be stored without jute bags for the longer duration.
    Birender Singh, Subhas Chandra win Rajya Sabha seats from Haryana

    ·       Union minister Birender Singh was on Saturday re-elected to the Rajya Sabha from Haryana while BJPbacked-Independent candidate and media baron Subhash Chandra won the second seat in a contest marred by cross-voting with 14 votes of Congress being rejected.
    ·       Singh was assured of a comfortable win while the main fight was between Chandra and Anand for the second seat.
    Ghulam Nabi Azad, Kamal Nath appointed Congress General Secretaries
    ·       Senior leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Kamal Nath were appointed Congress General Secretaries by party chief Sonia Gandhi, setting in motion the much talked about process of organisational changes ahead of the Assembly elections next year, including in Uttar Pradesh.
    ·       While Azad, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, has been made in charge of Uttar Pradesh, Nath will look after Punjab and Haryana, party General Secretary Janaradan Dwivedi said.
    MTNL chairman Narendra Yadav steps down
    ·       State-run firm Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) announced that its Chairman and Managing Director, Narendra Kumar Yadav has resigned.
    ·       Now for the timing, Director (finance) P K Purwar has been given additional charge of the CMD’s post.
    ·       The company is a telecommunications service provider in the metro cities of Mumbai and New Delhi in India and in the island nation of Mauritius in Africa.
    Satya Pal Jain appointed as part time member of 21st Law Commission

    ·       Additional Solicitor General of India and former Parliamentarian Satya Pal Jain was appointed as a part-time member of the 21st Law Commission of India.
    ·       His appointment is in addition to present charge as an Additional Solicitor General of India.
    Ragesh Chandra Appointed Secretary to Puducherry CM
    ·       G Ragesh Chandra has been designated as Secretary to Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanasamy.
    ·       A release from the Chief Secretary to the government said Lt Governor Kiran Bedi issued an order, stating that the appointment would come into effect immediately.
    ·       Chandra would hold additional charge of the departments and subjects already looked after by him.
    3M India appoints Debarati Sen as new managing director
    ·       3M India, the Indian arm of US multinational conglomerate 3M Co., announced the appointment of Debarati Sen as managing director (MD) of 3M India Limited and 3M Lanka Pvt. Ltd. with effect from June 1, 2016. 
    ·       Debarati Sen takes over from Amit Laroya, who led the company for the past three years and is now moving to 3M Korea.
    ·       3M India is a publicly traded company on the Bombay Stock Exchange and National Stock Exchange with annual sales of Rs 2,103 crore in FY16.
    V. Vaithilingam elected as Speaker of Puducherry Assembly

    ·       Congress leader and former Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam was elected unopposed as the Speaker of the 14th Puducherry legislative Assembly.
    ·       Besides, pro-tem Speaker VP Shivakozhuthu was declared elected unopposed as the Deputy Speaker.
    ·       V. Vaithilingam had served Chief Minister of the Union Territory twice. For first time he was in office from 1991 to 1996 and for second time again from 2008-2011.
    ·       He was the second youngest Chief Minister and the first Chief Minister of Puducherry to serve the full five-year term till date.
    Indian short film ‘Leeches’ wins at Seoul film gala

    ·       Indian short film “Leeches”, starring Sayani Gupta, won the Audience Choice Award at the Seoul International Women’s Film Festival (SIWFF). The actress is excited about the success.
    ·       “Leeches” is a film about two Hyderabadi sisters who live in the interiors of the city where a lot of orthodox practices are still prevalent.
    ·       The story is about an older sister who hatches a dangerous and improbable plan to save her younger sister from becoming a one-day bride and their fight against the prevalent culture and its practices.
    Four new elements on the Periodic table get their names

    ·       The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry has announced the names of four elements in the periodic table that were discovered in January 2016.
    ·       Moscovium (Mc), nihonium (Nh), tennessine (Ts) and oganesson (Og) complete the seventh row of the table. The elements — with atomic numbers 113, 115, 117 and 118 — were discovered in a joint effort by American and Russian scientists.
    ·       The research included scientists from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California and Riken institute in Japan.
    Luminati Aerospace successfully tests solar-powered aircraft
    ·       A test pilot successfully flew a solar-powered prototype aircraft on Friday for a company that envisions manufacturing a fleet of drones to provide aerial internet service for an estimated 4 billion people worldwide.
    ·       The test flight by Luminati Aerospace LLC took place at a former Northrop Grumman defense plant on eastern Long Island that once made military aircraft.
    Usain Bolt registers 2016’s 2nd best 100m timing

    ·       Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt registered 2016’s second fastest 100 meters timing after winning the Racers Grand Prix in 9.88 seconds.
    ·       Bolt finished 20 milliseconds short of the year best timing of 9.86 seconds set by France’s Jimmy Vicaut. “I almost fell over, but was trying to control it”, Bolt said about his start in the race.
    Saina Nehwal trumps Sun Yu to bag second Australian Open title
    ·       A day after coach Vimal Kumar termed her performance ‘perfect’, Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal dished out a similar show against Sun Yu to defeat the Chinese 11-21, 21-14, 21-19 in a 72-minute thriller and win the Australian Open Super Series women’s title on Sunday at the Sydney Sports Centre.
    ·       This is her second Australian Open win and with this, the World No. 8 has managed to claim her maiden title this season.
    ·       Two years after she first lifted the title, Saina became the first shuttler to win the Australian Open for a second time. This was Saina’s first final after she lost to Li Xuerui in China last November.
    Lewis Hamilton secures pole at Canadian GP
    ·       Three-time world champion Lewis Hamilton clinched pole at the 2016 Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, ahead of Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg.
    ·       This is Hamilton’s fifth pole at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel completed the top three, with Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo qualifying fourth. Hamilton currently trails Rosberg in the driver’s championship by 24 points.
    Paes only tennis player to appear in 7 Olympics

    ·       India’s Leander Paes will become the only tennis player in the world and the first Indian to make a seventh appearance at the Olympics.
    ·       Paes won the bronze medal for India in singles tennis at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
    ·       Interestingly, Leander’s father Vece was a midfielder in the bronze medal-winning Indian field hockey team at the 1972 Munich Olympics.
    KL Rahul 1st Indian to make century on ODI debut

    ·       Opening batsman KL Rahul became the first Indian to score a century on his ODI debut, after registering 100*(115) against Zimbabwe in the first ODI of the series.
    ·       He is the 11th batsman in ODI history to have achieved the feat. The previous best by an Indian on ODI debut was Robin Uthappa’s 86 against England in 2006.
