Rajnath Singh chairs Northern Zonal Council meeting in Chandigarh
The 28th meeting of the Northern Zonal Council chaired by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh is underway at Chandigarh. The meeting is being attended by Punjab Governor V P Singh Badnore, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarider Singh, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar lal, Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Nirmal Singh, Water Resources Minister of Rajasthan Dr Ram Partap, Lt Governor of Delhi Anil Baijal and Delhi Minister Imran Husain.
I-T dept launches new facility to link Aadhaar with PAN
The Income Tax department has launched a new e-facility to link a person’s Aadhaar with the Permanent Account Number (PAN). The department’s e-filing website has created a new link on its homepage making it easy to link the two unique identities of an individual. An official release said, in case of any minor mismatch in Aadhaar name as compared to the actual data in Aadhaar, a One Time Password will be sent to the mobile registered with Aadhaar. It said, taxpayers should ensure that the date of birth and gender in PAN and Aadhaar are exactly the same.
TN Government to form a panel to study harmful ‘Seemai Karuvelam’ trees
The Tamil Nadu government has formed an expert committee to study the impact of ‘Seemai Karuvelam’ trees. Additional Advocate General (AAG) Ayyadurai made the official submission on the same before the full bench of Madras High Court comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justices M Sundar and M M Sundresh, which ordered an extension of the interim stay on the cutting of ‘Seemai Karuvelam’ trees until the next date of hearing on 5 July 2017.

Haryana govt increases disability pension of labourers
Haryana Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board has increased the disability pension of labourers from Rs 300 to Rs 3,000. Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nayab Singh Saini said this while interacting with media persons at Chandigarh. He said the increase would provide relief to labourers who became physically disabled due to accidents.

Election Commission of India Launches National Contact Centre
The Election Commission of India has launched National Contact Centre with a toll free number- 1800111950. The move would enable any citizen from any part of the country to call on the toll-free number and get their query or complaint addressed at any time of the day in Hindi or English.
Ahmedabad to host a mega-event to celebrate International Yoga Day
The city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat would be hosting the biggest ever International Yoga Day event on 21 June 2017. The same was announced by Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev while addressing a press conference in the city. The Yogi announced that the event would witness participation from over 5 lakh people.

Fact Box: Science Express Climate Action Special (SECAS II)
The Science Express is 16 coach AC mobile train science exhibition of Department of Science& Technology (DST). The objective of the Express is to arouse interest of the young people in the field of science and technology. Since its inception, the programme is being managed by Vikram A Sarabhai Community Science Centre (VASCSC). The Science Express was launched from Delhi Safdarjung Railway station on October 30, 2007. The Express has so far completed 8 phases by travelling 1,41,800 km, with 455 halts, and 1602 exhibition days.
‘CASO’ to be Reintroduced as Part of Counter Terrorism Operations
Indian Army has planned to re-introduce cordon and search operations (CASO) as a part of its counter terrorism operations after a gap of 15 years. The major objective behind the reintroduction of combing operations is to bring the situation in the Kashmir Valley under control. Hereafterwards, Army will carry out CASO in a major way to flush out militants in the militancy-hit areas of Kulgam, Pulwama, Tral, Budgam and Shopian in south Kashmir, indicating a change in strategy.
IFSC at GIFT inks pact with GNLU to start course on IFSC regulations
India’s first International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) at Gujarat International Finance-Tec City (GIFT) entered into an agreement with Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) to collaborate on efforts for Skill Development in the field of International Financial Services& Regulations. Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU), GNLU will introduce a new course on International Financial Services Centre from its June 2017 Semester. It will also organize a program for Lawyers covering IFSC, International Arbitration and related fields.
Indian Navy ships; INS Karwar and Kakinada decommissioned
Two minesweepers of the Indian Navy INS Karwar and INS Kakinada were decommissioned after being in service for over 30 years. The two ships were bid adieu at a ceremony in the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai in the presence of Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba. INS Karwar was the first of the ‘Natya’ class minesweepers acquired from the erstwhile Soviet Union. The ship was commissioned on July 14, 1986.INS Kakinada was the second of the class and was commissioned on December 23, 1986.
IRCTC launches cash-on-delivery for train tickets
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is now offering home delivery of rail tickets and will allow passengers to make payment through any payment mode, including cash. Broad-basing the customer service, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation has now introduced pay-on-delivery (PoD) service, allowing passengers to book train tickets online and pay at the time of delivery.
Brazil declares end to Zika emergency
Brazil declared an end to public health emergency for the Zika virus after about 18 months of fight against this mosquito-borne virus. The Zika virus emergency fell upon Brazil when the country was preparing to host the 2016 Olympics, fuelling the concerns that Rio Olympics could spread the virus.
Dena Bank classifies Videocon loan as ‘bad’
Dena Bank has become the first lender to classify Videocon Industries as a bad loan. With the default on payments, Dena Bank has declared Videocon Industries account as non-performing asset (NPA) in the fourth quarter ended March 2017.
ii. The total exposure of lenders to the electronic goods maker has pegged at approx Rs 40,000 crore.

India will clock over 7.5% growth in 2017-18: Finance Secretary Ashok Lavasa
Finance Secretary Ashok Lavasa said in New York that India can clock a GDP growth of over 7(point)5 per cent in the fiscal 2017-18 and the country’s macro-economic fundamentals, including fiscal deficit and inflation, are all very sound. Lavasa, who is visiting the US to attend a global investors conference, said that while there has been a general climate of economic slowdown in the last few years across the world, India has managed to maintain a healthy rate of growth.
DIPAM launches online investor facilitation platform
The Finance Ministry has set up an Investor Facilitation Platform to provide information about stocks of public sector units. The platform will be an interactive forum for all stakeholders, including investors, investment banks, law firms, public sector units and administrative ministries that are involved in stake sales. All users will have to register on the platform, which will then be authorized by Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM).
NASA detects Signs of Water in a distant Neptune Sized Planet
Scientists have detected “a strong water signature” in the atmosphere of a distant Neptune-sized planet called HAT-P-26b. The study conducted using NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes has showed that HAT-P-26b has a primitive atmosphere composed almost entirely of hydrogen and helium. Although the planet is not a water world, its atmosphere which is relatively clear of clouds has a strong water signature.

VVS Laxman awarded honorary life membership of Marylebone Cricket Club
Former India batsman V V S Laxman on 11 May 2017 was awarded an honorary life membership to the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). Laxman is the fifth Indian to receive the honour, after Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Zaheer Khan.
V K Saraswat appointed new JNU Chancellor
Eminent scientist and former Director General of Defence Research and Development Organisation, DRDO, V K Saraswat has been appointed as the Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University. He succeeds former ISRO chairman K Kasturirangan, who completed his term on 30th March. Mr Saraswat has been appointed for a term of five years. He is currently serving as the Member of NITI Aayog.
Vinay Mohan Kwatra Appointed as Ambassador to France
Diplomat Vinay Mohan Kwatra has been appointed as India’s next ambassador to France. He is currently serving as joint secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Kwatra will succeed Mohan Kumar who is due to retire soon. Kwatra has served in Indian diplomatic missions in China and the US and has experience dealing with the UN organisations such as International Labour Organisation (ILO) and World Health Organisation (WHO). In the MEA, he had served as the joint secretary incharge of the counter-terrorism division in the MEA.
Justice Mudgal elected head of FIFA Governance Committee
Justice (Retd) Mukul Mudgal was today elected as head of FIFA’s governance committee at the world football governing body’s 67th Congress in Bahrain’s capital city of Manama. Justice Mudgal’s name was proposed by the FIFA Council yesterday for the vacant position of the governance chief after Miguel Maduro was reportedly ‘fired’ for his role in blocking Russian World Cup official Vitaly Mutko from retaining his seat on ruling council.
Aruna Sundararajan appointed as Secretary of Department of Telecommunications
Aruna Sundararajan was on 10 May 2017 appointed as Secretary of Department of Telecommunications. However, she will continue to serve as the Secretary for Union Ministry of Electronics and IT (Meity). Aruna succeeds PK Pujari, who was appointed to the post temporarily in March 2017. Sundararajan’s Secretary position will also be temporary.
Sakshi Malik enters finals at Asian Wrestling Championship
Rio Olympics bronze medallist woman wrestler Sakshi Malik assured herself of a silver medal after reaching the finals at the Asian Wrestling Championship in New Delhi today. The 24-year-old from Haryana defeated Ayaulym Kassymova of Kazakhstan to enter the finals.
NBA inaugurates academy in India
In a promising step for Indian basketball, the national Basketball Association (NBA) inaugurated its first ever academy in Greater Noida. This is latest of the several steps that the National Basketball Association (NBA) the governing body of the game in US has taken to promote the game in India over the past few years.
