Punjab govt launches country’s 1st amphibious bus project

i) Nearly two years after it was announced, the Punjab government today launched country’s first amphibious bus project at the Harike wetland near Amritsar.
ii) Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal launched the bus and took the inaugural ride with officials and media. He said that the amphibious bus will travel on land and in water. The project has cost the state government over Rs 11 crore.
iii) The bus run by the Punjab Tourism department has a seating capacity of 34 people and is equipped with life-jackets for everyone. The current route of the bus includes a 13-km ride from Amritsar to the Harike wetlands, which the bus is expected to traverse over 45 minutes. It will then traverse 4km on water.
Cyclone Vardah brings Chennai to a standstill

i) Cyclone Vardah made landfall in Chennai on Monday afternoon between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., uprooting trees, defacing highrises, smashing cars, disrupting public transport and telecommunication, bringing the metropolitan area to a standstill.
ii)The weather system that was first noticed nearly five days ago, grew into a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ and by the time it crossed the city near the Chennai Port, it had weakened into a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ with maximum wind speeds touching 110 kmph-120 kmph.
iii) This was a large weather system, measuring nearly 40 km in diameter, which explains the time taken for the system to cross.
Goa can have only one official language: Parsekar

i) Ruling out granting official language status to Marathi, Goa CM LaxmikantParsekar on Monday clarified that the state could have only one official language. “Konkani has been given official language status.
ii) Konkani has played a major role in giving Goa its identity,” he added. Appealing people not to make an unnecessary issue, Parsekar asserted Marathi was also given equal weightage.
Discount of 0.75 per cent on digital payments for petrol, diesel from today

i) Customers making digital payment for purchase of petrol and diesel will get a discount of 0.75 percent on the sale price of fuel from Tuesday.
ii) In a statement, the Indian Oil Corporation has said the amount of discount will be credited to customers account by way of cash back within maximum three working days of the transaction.
iii) The 0.75 percent discount on payments will be available on using credit cards, debit cards, mobile wallets or Prepaid Loyalty Cards.
Promotion of organ donation-an Indian Air Force initiative

i) To increase awareness and promote organ donation among the population, Indian Air Force(IAF), organised a seminar at the Air Force auditorium in New Delhi yesterday.
ii) Defence Ministry in a release said, around 500 air warriors and their families joined hands to strengthen the organ donation movement in the country. Directorate General Medical Services (Air) emphasised the need to increase awareness on organ donation and laid out the blueprint to carry forward the movement.
Uttar Pradesh Cabinet approves recommendations of 7th pay commission

i) The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved the recommendations of the seventh pay commission. Addressing the media today, Chief Minister AkhileshYadav said, the pay hike will be implemented from January 17.
ii) The state government had constituted a committee for the implementation of seventh pay commission. AIR correspondent reports that almost 25 lakhs employees and pensioners will be benefited by today’s decision. It will make a hike of almost 10 to 15 percent in the pay of employees.
Apoorva Mehta, Vivek Ramaswamy Feature In Forbes List Of US’ Richest Entrepreneurs Under 40

i) Two Indian-origin men have figured in Forbes magazine’s second annual list of wealthiest entrepreneurs under the age of 40 which is topped by Facebook founder Mark Zuckeberg.
ii) Vivek Ramaswamy, a successful biotech entrepreneur has been ranked 24th on ‘America’s Richest Entrepreneurs Under 40 2016’ list with a net worth of 600 million dollars and Apoorva Mehta stands at 31st spot with a 360 million dollars net worth.
World Bank ‘pauses’ Indus treaty processes of India, Pakistan

i) In a significant development, the World Bank has paused the separate processes initiated by India and Pakistan under the Indus Waters Treaty to allow the two countries to consider alternative ways to resolve their disagreements.
ii) The pause was announced by Kim in letters to the finance ministers of India and Pakistan. It was also emphasised that the Bank was acting to safeguard the Treaty.
NITI Aayog’s Amitabh Kant To Chair Meet On Digital Cash Payment

i) NITI Aayog’s Chief Executive Officer Amitabh Kant will chair an important meeting with senior officials from Jharkhand in connection with digital cashless payment.
ii) Principal Secretaries, secretaries of different departments and senior bank officials would attend the meeting at 10 am in Ranchi, an official release said quoting Development Commissioner AmitKhare.
iii) After the meeting, Mr Kant would meet Chief Minister Raghubar Das and discuss on cashless Jharkhand. Jharkhand has launched the campaign from December 2.
Pakistan army chief names Lt Gen Naveed Mukhtar as new ISI chief

i) Pakistan’s new army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa on Sunday abruptly removed the head of the country’s spy agency ISI and made several other significant changes in the army’s top brass, as part of a major reshuffle.
ii) Gen Bajwa, who took over from Gen Raheel Sharif two weeks ago, appointed Lt Gen Naveed Mukhtar as director-genereal of the notorious Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), replacing Lt Gen RizwanAkhtar, the army said in a statement.
iii) Lt Gen Akhtar, who was at the centre of controversy following a Dawn newspaper report which said that Pakistan’s Nawaz Sharif-led government had told the army to either act against terrorists or face international diplomatic isolation.
Priyanka Chopra appointed UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for stellar work in child rights

i) Actress Priyanka Chopra, an Indian star with a global fan following, was named UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador at a ceremony in New York yesterday. The international icon has been associated with the world welfare body for over a decade, and was conferred this title due to her extensive work in child rights, on its 70th anniversary.
ii) The 34-year-old, who has been donating a tenth of her salary to the cause of women’s education, safety and empowerment through her NGO, The Priyanka Chopra Foundation for Health and Education, was presented with the ambassadorship by legendary football player David Beckham and Netflix hit Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown.
Cristiano Ronaldo beats Lionel Messi to win Ballon d’Or 2016

i) Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo beat rival Lionel Messi to win the prestigious Ballon d’Or award for a fourth time.
ii) The 31-year-old is now one behind Barcelona’s Messi, who took the honour for a fifth time last year.
iii) Atletico Madrid’s French forward Antoine Griezmann finished third in the vote.Ronaldo helped Real Madrid win last season’s Champions League and scored three goals as Portugal won Euro 2016.
iv) He has now won the Ballon d’Or in 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2016, with Messi the only other recipient of the award since winning it for the first time in 2009.
Researchers discover Hot Atomic Hydrogen in Earth’s Thermosphere

i) Researchers have discovered the existence of hot atomic hydrogen atoms in thermosphere, the upper layer of earth’s atmosphere. 
ii) The discovery changes current understanding of the distribution of hot atomic hydrogen and its interaction with other atmospheric constituents.
iii) This discovery was based on new numerical techniques and their application of remote sensing measurements acquired by NASA’s TIMED (Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics satellite) satellite.
PankajAdvani beats Peter Gilchrist in final to win his 11th World Billiards Championship

i) Ace Indian cueist PankajAdvani has won his 11th World Billiards (150-Up format) Championships title in the summit clash in Bengaluru, Karnataka yesterday.
ii) PankajAdvani defeated Peter Gilchrist of Singapore. He beats multiple world champion Gilchrist by six games to three in a gripping final contest, to wrap up his 16th world title overall. In the semi-finals earlier today, Advani overcame Myanmar’s AungHtay 5-0, while Gilchrist defeated India’s DhvajHaria 5-1.
