Hindi Diwas being celebrated throughout country today
i. Hindi Diwas is celebrated on September 14 every year because on this day in 1949, the Constituent Assembly of the country adopted Hindi language as the official language of the Republic of India.
ii. It serves to promote and propagate the Hindi language. The day is celebrated in the schools, colleges, offices, organizations and other enterprises as a Hindi Diwas with the unique programs and competitions organized related to Hindi poems, story recitations and vocabulary quizzes.
Arunachal Pradesh’s first Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Store inaugurated by MoS Shri Mansukh Mandaviya
i. The Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Shri Mansukh Mandaviya inaugurated Arunachal Pradesh’s first Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Store at Naharlagun, Itanagar. Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Shri Pema Khandu also shared the dais on the occasion.
ii. In this function, both dignitaries witnessed signing of a MoU between Health& Family Welfare Department of Arunachal Pradesh and Bureau of Pharma PSUs of India (BPPI), an agency under Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. As per the MoU, 84 Jan Aushadhi Stores will be opened in Arunachal Pradesh.
iii. The PMJAY is for the poor and needy. He called upon the doctors to prescribe generic medicines, which cost a fraction of the branded drugs.
iv. Jan Aushadhi scheme is being implemented in the country through Bureau of Pharma PSUs of India (BPPI) under the administrative control of Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. 423 Jan Aushadhi Stores are functional across the country.
i. Andhra Pradesh has become the 2nd state in the country after Gujarat to achieve 100% electrification of households.
JM Financials published the report based on a national -level survey on electrification in various states.
About 35% rural households in states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha and Assam still lacked access to power supply, he claimed.
The Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu asked the Department officials to chalk out an action plan to be implemented from the grassroots level so as to make the power sector self-sufficient in the long run.
i. Keralites across the world are celebrating Thiruvonam today on a joyful mode.
ii. AIR correspondent reports that Onam is one of the rarest festivals which is celebrated by a complete State, irrespective of religion, caste and creed.
President and Vice President and Prime Minister have greeted the people on auspicious occasion of Onam.
In his message, President Pranab Mukherjee said, Onam is a festival celebrated by people of all religion, caste and community with equal joy, underlying the secular fabric of the society.
iii. Vice President Hamid Ansari said the festival celebrated with traditional gaiety and enthusiasm and it reflects the central role of agriculture in the society.
i. China and Vietnam have agreed to “properly manage” their differences over territorial disputes in the South China Sea (SCS) and “safeguard stability”, after an international tribunal rejected Chinese claims over the region on a petition brought before it by the Phillipines.
The decision came after talks between Vietnamese Premier Nguyen Xuan Phuc and his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang here.
ii. Phuc’s visit to China is the first by a top Vietnamese leader, after the tribunal’s verdict on July 12.
iii. China had rejected the verdict by The Hague-based tribunal, which has said that “although Chinese navigators and fishermen, as well as those of other states, had historically made use of the islands in the SCS, there was no evidence that China had historically exercised exclusive control over the waters or their resources.”
3rd BRICS Urbanisation Forum Meet begins in Vishakhapatnam today
i. In Andhra Pradesh, the 3rd BRICS Urbanisation Forum Meet is beginning in Visakhapatnam this afternoon.
Union Minister for Urban Development, Housing, Urban Poverty Alleviation and Information and Broadcasting M. Venkaiah Naidu will address the inaugural session of the three-day summit.
ii. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will deliver the keynote address in the summit.
iii. The summit will deliberate on the transition and challenges being faced in urbanization in the partnering countries-Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
It will also discuss issues like climate change, sanitation management, smart cities, financing urban infrastructure and inclusive housing besides on how to increase the productivity, and to make a separate urban finance system and creation of employment opportunities.
iv. About 100 delegates from BRICS, 400 delegates from various places across the country are attending the summit.
i. The sharp fall in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in August strengthens the case for a more than 25 basis point rate cut in the next 2-3 quarters, according to experts.
ii. Retail inflation fell sharply to 5.05 percent in August from 6.07 percent in July, thanks a sharp fall in food prices, which enjoy about 50 percent weight in the inflation basket.
iii. Food inflation numbers have been well-behaved in the past few months and potential positives from pulses can ease the cycle beyond 25 bps rate cut, said Badri Nivas NC, Country Treasurer and Head of Local Markets Treasury at Citi India.
i. Tiger Global-funded online classifieds platform, Quikr, bought for an undisclosed sum Stayglad, a marketplace for beauty services, making its eighth acquisition of struggling rivals in a weak-funding market.
ii. Quikr Founder& Chief Executive Officer Pranay Chulet has adopted a strategy of deepening its vertical offering in select sectors such as cars, beauty services, homes and jobs.
iii. Since November 2015, he has bought smaller rivals at bargain prices in each of these segments that have struggled to raise additional funds to sustain themselves, helping Quikr gain access to technology and marketing talent, besides clients.
i. Digital payment platform FreeCharge in partnership with Axis Bank on Monday launched Unified Payments Interface (UPI) that allows instant transactions from a smartphone using a virtual payment address (VPA).
ii. Customers will be able to create a virtual address on the Freecharge Android app and link it to their bank account to register on the UPI platform.
iii. The partnership allows Freecharge users to pay for transactions from their bank accounts and they don’t have to be existing customers of Axis Bank.Customers can create multiple handles/VPA linked to their bank accounts.
i. State Bank of India (SBI) chief Arundhati Bhattacharya, ICICI Bank CEO and MD Chanda Kochhar and Axis Bank CEO Shikha Sharma are India’s top women bankers who have made it to the list of 50 most powerful women based outside the United States. The list was compiled by Fortune magazine.
ii. Ana Botin, who is the chief executive chairman of Spanish banking group Banco Santander, claimed the number one spot in the list.
iii. Bhattacharya ranked second on the list, while Kochhar claimed the fifth spot. Sharma held the 19th position in the Fortune list of 50 most powerful women international list, Press Trust of India reported.
i. Anoop Kumar Sharma has taken charge as the chairman& managing director of Shipping Corporation of India for a period of three years.
ii. Anoop Kumar Sharma has taken charge of the post of CMD, Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) with effect from September 12, 2016 for a period of three years.
iii. As the country’s premier shipping line, the SCI owns and operates around one-third of the Indian tonnage, and has operating interests in practically all areas of the shipping business, servicing both national and international trades.
i. Arunachal Pradesh Governor Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowa was removed from the post of Arunachal Pradesh Governor.
ii. President Pranab Mukherjee has directed that Shri J.P. Rajkhowa to put his papers from the post of Governor of Arunachal Pradesh.
iii. The V. Shanmuganathan, Governor of Meghalaya has been given the charge of Arunachal Pradesh by President Pranab Mukherjee.
AWARDS AND HONORS:
i. Indian American Ramesh Raskar on 13 September 2016 won the 2016 Lemelson-MIT Prize.
ii. Raskar is the co-inventor of radical imaging solutions including photography, an ultra-fast imaging system that can see around corners, low-cost eye-care solutions for the developing world and a camera that allows users to read pages of a book without opening the cover.
i. President Pranab Mukherjee presented the Rajbhasha awards at Rashtrapati Bhawan on the occasion of Hindi Divas.
ii. The Rajbhasha awards were instituted by the Department of Official Language of Home Ministry to recognize the excellent contribution of Ministries, Departments and Nationalized Banks in the field of Hindi.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:
i. Iran’s state TV says the country’s Revolutionary Guard has unveiled a new high-speed vessel capable of carrying a helicopter and up to 100 people.
ii. The report on Tuesday follows a series of close encounters between American warships and Guard vessels in the Persian Gulf.
iii. It showed a catamaran-type ship described as 55 meters (yards) long and 14 meters (yards) wide, carrying a light civilian helicopter. It did not elaborate on the speed of the boat.
i. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) and All India Football Federation (AIFF) have jointly launched an online portal for its Global Scouting Programme (GSP).
ii. The portal was launched by Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel in New Delhi.
iii. Under the Global Scouting Programme, boys of Indians living abroad will be able to play in India’s team in FIFA under-17 world cup scheduled in 2017 in different cities of the country.
iv. The online portal of GSP will allow applicant have to upload a two minute playing video on the site.
v. It will provide Indian players who hold valid Indian passport a chance to present his playing talent to the scouts of India’s U-17 team.
i. Javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia became the first Indian to clinch two gold medals at the Paralympics after he broke his own world record to clinch the top honours at the Rio Games here.
ii. Devendra, who won his previous gold in the 2004 Athens Games, bettered his own world record to finish on top in the men’s F46 event.
iii. Devendra, whose previous best was 62.15 metres (achieved in the 2004 Games), improved the mark with an attempt of 63.97 metres at the Olympic Stadium (Engenhao).
