Naropa Festival begins in Ladakh
i. TheNaropa festival, which is heldevery 12 years, began today at the 17th century Hemis Monastery inLadakh. The main events at the week-long Naropa festival, a celebration of the1,000th birth anniversary of Saint Naropa, are the display of six bone ornaments and the unfurling of the ancient silk Thangka (Tibetan Buddhist painting) of BuddhaAmitabha.
Govt introduces bullet-proof army vehicles in Kashmir
i. The government has introducednew bullet-proof army vehicles in Kashmir, called‘Panthera-T6’,to safeguard the armed forces from stone-pelting and terror attacks.
ii. The armored personnel carrier, with a seating capacity of eight, features a real-time public monitoring system and ahigh-resolution camerathat can monitor a mobaround 360°. Each army unit will be given two of these combat vehicles.
Gujarat CM to host Twitter Town Hall on Sept 23
i. Gujarat Chief MinisterVijay Rupani will host aTwitter Town Hallon September 23. “Tweet your questions to me using #AskVijayRupani,” he said.
ii. With this, Rupani will become thefirst Indian Chief Minister to host a Twitter Town Hall, following similar social media interactions by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Barack Obama.
17th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM)
i. Vice-PresidentHamid Ansari will be representing India at the upcoming17th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to be held atMargarita Island in Venezuela from September 17-18.
This will be thesecond time that the Prime Minister of India will not be representing the country at the Summit. India is one of the founding members of the Non Aligned Movement andIndia hosted the 7th NAM Summit in 1983 in New Delhi. Thelast NAM Summit was hosted by Iran in 2012.
ii. The membership ofNAM comprises 53countries from Africa,39 from Asia, 26 from Latin America and the Caribbean and 2 from Europe (Belarus, Azerbaijan). There are17 countries and 10 international organizations that are Observers at NAM. The Non Aligned Movement came into being 55 years ago when leaders of 25 developing countries met at the 1961 Belgrade Conference.
UIDAI bans sharing of Aadhaar details
i. In a step to ensure that the details ofAadhaar is not misused, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) asked agencies in possession of Aadhaar number of an individual to not publish or post the information publicly.
ii. It said that the agencies will have to ensure security and confidentiality of the 12-digit resident identification number under the Aadhaar Act.
Nitish launches website on 350th Prakash Utsav
i. Bihar Chief MinisterNitish Kumar launched a website to provide information on the celebration of350th Prakash Utsav of the Sikh guru in 2017. The website has been developed by tourism department Prakash Utsav
ii. Athree-dayinternational Sikh convention would be held in Patna early next year. He also flagged off a tourism department vehicle for publicity ofPrakash utsav.
196% growth registers in tourist arrival in August 2016
i. A total of over66 thousand tourists arrived in August this year as compared to around22 thousand during the month of August 2015.Over 196% growth has been registered in tourist arrival on e-Tourist Visa in August this year over the same period last year.E-Tourist Visa facility is available for citizens of 150 countries arriving at 16 Airports in India.
Barack Obama designated the country’s first marine national monument
i. The United States PresidentBarack Obama designatedthe country’sfirst marine national monument, Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument, in theAtlantic Ocean. The monument aims at protecting fragiledeep-sea ecosystems off the coast ofNew England.
ii. The announcement was made by the American president at thethird annual Our Ocean Conference in Washington DC. The Conference is hosted by Secretary ofState John Kerry. The Conference focuses on issues related to marine-protected areas, sustainable fisheries, marine pollution, and climate-related impacts on the ocean.
iii. In August 2016, Obama had decided to expand thePapahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument off the coast of Hawaii by 1.1 million square km, creating theworld’s largest marine protected area. More than 20 countries attending the annual ocean conservation meeting will announce the creation of 40 significant new marine protected areas,totalling nearly 1.2 million square km of ocean.
India to sign $8.8bn Rafale jets deal with France
i. India will signa $8.8 billion deal for36 Rafale fighter jets with France on September 23, reports said. This comes amid concerns over the deal following theScorpene submarine data leak, which was later dismissed byDefence Minister Manohar Parrikar. Reportedly, the cost, offsets and service details have been finalized and the inter-governmental agreement is now being finalized.
Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank four awards for inclusive insurance for 2016
i. Dharwad-headquartered Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank has baggedfour awards for inclusive insurance for 2016 from Skoch Group.
ii. S Ravindran, chairman, received the award from Sameer Kochhar, chairman ofSkoch Group, inHyderabad. The bank, which operates in nine districts ofKarnataka covering 57 taluks, has brought 28 lakh people under Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojna, PM Suraksha Bima Yojna and PM Jan Dhan Yojna.
Prize under Rajbhasha Kirti Purashar Scheme
i. The PSU has bagged the award for outstanding performancein official language implementation under the category of nationalized banks in thelinguistic region – B – for the year 2014-15. The bank received theaward from President Pranab Mukherjee during a function held atVigyan Bhavan, New Delhi on the occasion of Hindi Diwas.
ii. “Ranjan Dhawan, managing director and chief executive officer of theBank of Baroda received the award,” a release issued by the bank said.Union minister of home affairsRajnath Singh was also present in the function. “Ravi Kumar Arora, general manager (in charge- official language) and DrJawahar Karnavat, assistant general manager (official language) were present on the occasion on behalf of the bank. “
iii. Vijaya Bank has bagged the second prize under Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar (Region C) for the year 2015-16. The prize was accepted byKishore Sansi,Managing Director& CEOVijaya Bank, fromPresidentPranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan Auditorium, New Delhi.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, MoS for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju and others also took part in the function.Vijaya Bank is a fastest growing Public Sector Bank with its Corporate Office in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. It is one of the nationalized banks in India. The Bank offers a wide range of financial products and services to the customers through its various delivery channels.
Gold imports drop 77% to $1.11 bn in August
i. According to government data,India’s gold imports fell by 77.5% year-on-year to $1.11 billion in Augustamid declining prices of the metal in both global and domestic markets.
Theyellow metal’s imports have been declining since February this year, thereby contributing to a reduction in trade deficit. Meanwhile, silver imports also dipped by64% to $130.32 million last month.
India and Sri Lanka MoU to support livelihood of the fishing and farming communities
i. India and Sri Lanka has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support livelihood of thefishing and farmingcommunities inHambantota district of Sri Lanka. The project envisages gift of equipment and tools such as grub hoes, bicycles, life jackets and sewing machines, worth300 million SLR, to the fishing and farming communities in Hambantota district.
ii. Part of the grant is expected to be used for developing fisheries villages under a national programme. More than75000 people across the district will get directbenefitfrom the project. The project will be implemented in consultation with the relevant local authorities.
Uber partnership with Marti Suzuki and NSDC for jobless people
i. Transportation app Uber has launched a new initiative in partnership withMaruti Suzuki and National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) for creating livelihoodopportunities for one million people by 2018.
ii. Uber Technologies Inc. is an American multinational online transportation network companyheadquartered in San Francisco,California. It develops, markets and operates the Uber mobile “app”, which allows consumers with smart phones to submit a trip request, which the software program then automatically sends to the Uber driver nearest to the consumer, alerting the driver to the location of the customer

i. BHVS Narayana Murthy, an expert inAvionics, in the second week of September 2016 was appointed asDirector of Research Centre Imarat (RCI). The RCI is a premiereDefense Research Development Organization (DRDO) laboratory located in Hyderabad.
ii. BHVS Narayana Murthy has made contributions towards design, development and delivery of onboard computers,Missile launch processors, real-time mission software etc. in thelast 30 years.
Research CentreImarat is responsible for Research and Development ofMissile Systems,Guided Weaponsand advanced Avionics for Indian Armed Forces.It was established by APJ Abdul Kalam in 1988.
Abraham Verghese selected for 2015 National Humanities Medal
i. Indian-Americanphysician-author Abraham Verghese, whose workhas emphasised empathy in medicine, has been selected for the prestigious2015 National Humanities Medal, the White House has announced.
ii. US PresidentBarack Obama would confer thehonour upon Verghese, along with 11 others, and the recipients of 2015 National Medal of Arts at ceremony on September 21.
iii. Currently a professor of medicine at the Stanford School of Medicine,61-year-old Verghese has authored several acclaimed books, including “My Own Country” and “Cutting for Stone“.

i. Bollywood queen Priyanka Chopra is in the top 10 in Forbes magazine’sannual list ofbest-paid television actresses.
ii. Colombian-American actress Sofia Vergara topped the rich list for the fifth time in a row. Priyanka ranked 8th on Forbes world’s highest-paid actresses with an earning of$10 million.
Ewan McGregor to receive Humanitarian award
i. Actor Ewan McGregor will receive theBritannia Humanitarian Award at the British Academy Britannia Awards in California.
The 45-year-old “Trainspotting” star will be feted on October 28 by organizers at The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles for “using the art form of the moving image. To create positive social change and actively shine a light on important humanitarian issues.
India’s online population to touch 500mn by 2020
i. India’s online population will touchthe 500 million mark by 2020, with a majority of them being local language users, Google’sAsia-Pacific Language Head Richa Chitranshisaid.
Internet outreach in India has increased primarily due to the availability of affordable smart phones and cheap data packs, she added. Further, she stated thatpresently 65% Indians access the internet using their phones.

i. Former England batsmanGraeme Hick has been appointed asAustralia’s batting coach Until March2020. He will take up his post before Australia host South Africa for three tests this year.
ii. Graeme Hick. He is a Zimbabwean-born right handed cricketer who played 65 Test matches and 120 One Day Internationals matches for England. He scored136 first-class centuries at an average of52.2 but only six centuries at test level, averaging just 31.32 runs.

India jump 4 places in FIFA rankings
i. The Indian football team jumpedfour places to be ranked 148th as per the latestFederation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) rankings. This is the first time since April 2015 that the team has entered thetop-150 international rankings. Earlier in September, India had defeated the then 114th placed Puerto Rico 4-1 in an international friendly.

i. UttarakhandGovernor K K Paulreleased a book titled‘Shanti ki Talaash mein Zindagi’written in Hindi byHaridwar-based author and journalist Radhika Nagrath.

Tony-Winning Director Jack Hofsiss Dies At 65
i. Americantheatre-film director Jack Hofsisspassed away inLos Angeles. Hewas 65. Hofsiss directed several TV films including a 1982 adaptation of “The Elephant Man,” a version of “Cat of a Hot Tin Roof” starring Jessica Lange, and “The Oldest Living Graduate” with Henry Fonda.
ii. He was best known for shepherding“The Elephant Man” to Broadway from off-Broadway and in 1979, at 28, became the youngest man at the time to win the Tony for best direction.
