Nepal President to arrive in Delhi on five-day visit today
Nepalese President Bidya Devi Bhandari is arriving in New Delhi today on a five day visit to India. This will be Bhandari’s first foreign trip after assuming the office in October 2015, following the promulgation of the new Constitution in Nepal. A high-level delegation comprising several ministers and MPs accompanying her. In a press briefing yesterday, Joint secretary in the External Affairs ministry Mr Sudhakar Dalela informed that Mrs Bhandari will have delegation level talks tomorrow.

President to attend Satyagrah centenary event in Patna today
President Pranab Mukherjee will embark on a one-day visit to Patna today to participate in ongoing centenary celeberations of Mahatma Gandhi’s Champaran Satyagraha. President Mukherjee will attend felicitation ceremony to honour freedom fighters from across the country. AIR Corespondent reports that freedom fighters of different parts of the countries have come Patna to participate this memorable event.

Railways Ministry launches first-ever train with glass roof coaches on Visakhapatnam-Araku route
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on 16 April 2017 flagged-off first-ever train with glass roof coaches on Visakhapatnam-Araku route through video conferencing from Bhubaneswar. The see-through Vistadome coach on Visakhapatnam-Kirandul passenger train was launched with an aim to provide a delightful travelling experience of the picturesque Araku valley.This specially-designed Vistadome air-conditioned coach is claimed to be a first-of-its-kind on Indian Railways.

ISRO announces launch of South Asia Satellite on 5 May
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will be launching its ‘South Asia Satellite’ on 5 May 2017. The launch aims to benefit all the countries in the region, except Pakistan.The news on the agency’s plan to launch South Asia Satellite was confirmed by ISRO chief AS Kiran Kumar during his telephonic interview with PTI. He informed that it’s going up in the first week of May 2017.But reports suggest (on basis of ISRO sources) that the launch of this communication satellite (GSAT-9) is scheduled for 5 May 2017. It will be launched on board the space agency’s rocket GSLV-09 from Sriharikota spaceport.

70th Himachal Day celebrated across Himachal Pradesh
70th Himachal Day was celebrated across Himachal Pradesh (HP) on 15 April 2017. Himachal Pradesh came into existence by merging 30 odd princely states in 1948.According to Transparency International Survey 2005, Himachal Pradesh was found to be the second least corrupt state in the country.Literacy rate increased from 7 per cent in 1948 to 82.80 per cent in 2011.

PM Modi to inaugurate many projects in Gujarat today
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a series of projects in the Gujarat today during his two-day visit to the State. In the morning, Mr. Modi will inaugurate a Multi Super Speciality Hospital and Research Centre in Surat and a diamond polishing at Hira Bourse Special Economic Zone at Icchapur. The Prime Minister will also go to Bajipura village in Tapi district to inaugurate a cattle feed plant and ice-cream plant of Sumul Dairy, and lay foundation stone for dairy products plant at Nava Pardi. He will also address a large gathering there.

Prakash Javadekar to launch RUSA Portal, Mobile App today
Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA), under the aegis of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, will launch its own portal and mobile app. Human Resource and Development Minister Prakash Javadekar will launch the portal and mobile app in New Delhi today. The portal is a one-stop for States’ Higher Education Plans, decision of the States’ Higher Education Councils and details of the resources under this scheme. The mobile application will ensure that all projects under RUSA are tracked 24×7. The Ministry said, seventeen RUSA projects will also be launched today.

Venkaiah Naidu, Piyush Goyal to attend MoU signing ceremony for Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Project today
In Madhya Pradesh, Union Ministers Venkaiah Naidu and Piyush Goyal will attend the MOU signing ceremony for Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Project in Bhopal today. AIR correspondent reports that chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will also be present on this occasion. The state government is inking MOUs with three developers for the Ultra Mega Solar Power Project, to be built in Gurh of Rewa district. The government has set a deadline of October 2018 to complete the 750 megawatt project.

Stop illegal cutting of trees: Punjab Forest Minister
The Forest Minister of Punjab, Mr Sadhu Singh Dharamsot has given strict instructions to the officials of the Forest Department to stop the illegal cutting of the trees falling in the forest area. The Minister said that the matter of illegal cutting of trees of the forest area came to light during a review of the departmental projects. He further said that the officials have been instructed to increase night vigil in all the forest areas of the state so as to curb this illegal practice. He also divulged that the departmental officials have also been directed to remove encroachments from the forest lands coming under their respective jurisdictions and make sure that saplings of various types are planted at these.

Working with its allies, China on range of options on North Korea: US
The United States says, it is working with its allies and China on a range of options on North Korea. In an interview, the US top Security Adviser Lieutenant General HR McMaster said, tensions are mounting over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programmes and US is working together with its allies and partners and with the Chinese leadership to develop a range of options. He said there is consensus with China that this kind of situation could not be continued. The comments came after a failed missile test launch by North Korea and a massive military parade.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wins referendum
Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has won a referendum to expand Presidential powers, which could keep him in office until 2029. With 99.45 percent of ballots counted, the “Yes” campaign had won 51.37 percent and “No” 48.63 percent. The head of Electoral Board said, official tallies would be released within the next 12 days. Erdogan said in Istanbul that, for the first time in the history of the republic, the country is changing its ruling system through civil politics. He said the referendum had ended Turkey’s decades long history of military intervention in Government.

Death toll in Aleppo bus convoy bomb attack reaches 126
The death toll from Saturday’s bomb attack on a crowded bus convoy outside Aleppo, Syria has reached 126. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, at least 68 children were among the people killed in the deadliest attack. The blast hit a convoy carrying residents from the northern towns of Fuaa and Kafraya as they waited at a transit point in rebel-held Rashidin, west of Aleppo. The convoy was carrying people including civilians and several hundred pro-government fighters, who were granted safe passage out of the two Shi’ite villages which are besieged by rebels.

Nepal govt announces public holidays during Nepalese President’s visit to India
The Nepal government has announced public holidays on April 17 and April 22 – the days when Nepalese President Bidya Devi Bhandari begins her first foreign visit to India and returns to the Himalayan country. Nepalese Home Ministry officials said the two days will be public holidays in Nepal to mark the departure and arrival of Bhandari after concluding her five-day visit to India. As per custom, public holidays are announced in Nepal whenever the head of the state embarks on an official foreign visit.
Performance to decide compensation for bankers, says RBI
Compensation of bank management will soon be based on the performance of their banks, according to the Reserve Bank of India. In RBI’s revised prompt corrective action norms, restriction on compensation has been recommended towards banks that breach the third-level risk threshold of either capital, bad loans, or profitability. This framework would apply to all banks operating in India.

Wholesale inflation eases from 3-year high to 5.7% in March
The Wholesale Price Index (WPI)-based annual inflation rate in March eased to 5.7%, against a three-year high of 6.55% in February, according to data released on Monday. This was attributed to a fall in the prices of pulses, potato, and onion. Further, a pick up in the circulation of new currency has helped revive consumer demand after demonetisation.

Sai Praneeth has won the title match of Men’s singles at Singapore Open Badminton beating his compatriot Kidambi Srikanth. Returning in the match after losing first game 17-21 Praneeth won last two games 21-17, 21-12 . Former World No. 3 Srikanth yesterday notched up a 21-13 21-14 win over Indonesia’s Anthony Sinisuka Ginting to reach the third Super Series final of his career. Praneeth was the first to make it to the summit clash after he executed his plans brilliantly to completely blow away his opponent in a 38-minute match. He thrashed three-time Korea Masters Grand Prix Gold winner Lee 21-6 21-8 in a lop-sided semifinal match.
Dipa Karmakar, Sakshi Malik in Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list
Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar and wrestler Sakshi Malik have been included in Forbes’ ’30 Under 30′ Asia 2017 list. Karmakar is India’s only female Olympic gymnast while Sakshi won a bronze medal at the Rio Olympic Games. The list also features 25-year-old Sharath Gayakwad, India’s first Paralympic swimmer and Arjuna award winner, who has 96 medals to his name.
Sebastian Vettel wins 2017 Bahrain Grand Prix
Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel on 16 April 2017 grabbed the first position in the 2017 Bahrain Grand Prix. The victory is Vettel’s second of the season after the four-time world champion won the opener in Australia. Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas finished second and third in the race, respectively.
Gayatri Pullela wins twin crown at Pembangunan Jaya Raya Junior Grand Prix
National Badminton coach Pullela Gopichand’s daughter Gayatri Pullela has bagged both the singles and doubles crown at the Pembangunan Jaya Raya Junior Grand Prix in Jakarta. Gayatri eked out a hard-fought 21-11, 18-21, 21-16 win over her doubles partner Samiya Farooqui to win the girls U-15 singles title. She later teamed up with Samiya to clinch the U-15 doubles title with a straight game 21-17, 21-15 win over Indonesian pair of Kelly Larissa and Shelandry Vyola. Both Gayatri and Samiya train together at the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad.
Internet pioneer Robert Taylor passes away
Robert Taylor, a pioneer of Modern Computing and the Internet, passed away following Parkinson’s disease. He was 85. Taylor was instrumental in the creation of the internet and modern computer. He was awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation in 1999.
