World Heritage Day observed with theme Cultural Heritage& Sustainable Tourism
The 2017 World Heritage Day was observed across the world on 18 April 2017. The theme for the year is Cultural Heritage& Sustainable Tourism. The theme for the 2017 World Heritage Day was chosen in relation to the United Nations International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development and in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals. The day is aims at raising awareness of the importance of protecting and preserving various sites around the world that have achieved world heritage status.

Nepal President to hold talks with President, Prime Minister today
Nepal President Bidya Devi Bhandari will hold meetings with President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi today. Vice President Hamid Ansari, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will also call on the visiting dignitary. The Nepal President is also scheduled to attend a business event. The President of Nepal will be accorded ceremonial reception at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Pranab Mukherjee will also host a state banquet in honor of the visiting dignitary.

Dynamic fares in Rajdhani, Shatabdi acceptable under LTC: Govt
Dynamic or flexi-fare in Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains will be admissible under the Leave Travel Concession, LTC, allowance to government employees. The Department of Personnel and Training, DoPT, has issued a directive in this regard to all central government ministries. The move comes after references were received from various segments seeking clarification on the issue of admissibility of flexi-fare while booking the tickets of these trains for the purpose of LTC.
Pre-censorship of films: SC issues notice to I&B Min, Censor Board
The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and sought their replies on a plea seeking guidelines for pre-censorship of films. A bench, comprising Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan passed the order yesterday. The petitioner has sought action on the report of a committee headed by legendary filmmaker Shyam Benegal which, among other things, had suggested that the censor board’s role should be confined to certifying films.

President of India Inaugurates Global Exhibition on Services
The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee inaugurated the third edition of the Global Exhibition on Services (GES-2017) at Rashtrapati Bhavan.Commenting on the occasion, the President stated that India can be a key partner for emerging services like facilities management, urban infrastructure, environmental services and event and exhibition.He further added that India can deliver many of these services to offshore locations and help large cities manage their facilities optimally, help hospitals in managing their medical records or provide required geospatial information.
Nation-wide training programme launched for Elected Women Representatives of Panchayats
The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj launched a comprehensive module for capacity building of Elected Women Representatives (EWRs) of Panchayats.In addition, a training program for trainers of women panchayat leaders across the country was also launched. Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, Union Minister of Women& Child Development, launched the program at Ranchi, Jharkhand through a video conference.The National Commission for Women of the WCD Ministry in collaboration with TISS developed the module.

ISRO to enter into a joint venture with industries to build rockets
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is planning to enter into a joint venture with a conglomerate of industries to build launch vehicles.The same was confirmed by ISRO’s Chairman A S Kiran Kumar, who stated that the organisation is currently using a significant amount of things from the industry and that 80 per cent of their work in the case of building launch vehicles is done with the industry.• The space agency is planning to form a joint venture with industries to build a polar satellite launch vehicle (PSLV). The first launch of the vehicle is scheduled to take place between 2020 and 2021.

Centre initiates steps to bring TV, digital media under Working Journalists Act
Union Labour and Employment Minister Bandaru Dattatreya said the Centre has initiated steps to bring the electronic and digital media journalists too under the ambit of the Working Journalists Act. The minister stated this at a press conference in Kochi yesterday in reply to reporters’ questions on steps taken by the Narendra Modi government to bring the electronic media journalists too under the purview of the Act.

Rajasthan govt to sign reworked MoU with HPCL for Barmer refinery today
In Rajasthan, the state government will sign a reworked MoU with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited -HPCL today for the Rs 43,129 crore Barmer refinery in the presence of Union Minister of state for petroleum and natural gas Dharmendra Pradhan and Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje. The Barmer refinery will be the first in the country to produce BS-6 standard fuel. The state government will have 26% stake in the project while rest will be held by HPCL.

Kerala govt to provide pension to former circus artistes
The Kerala Government has decided to provide pension to former circus artistes in the state and allocated 1.13 crore rupees for the same. The decision was taken after a group of circus artistes met Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan during his recent visit to Kannur district and appraised him of their plight. Thalassery in Kannur district is considered to be the cradle of Indian circus.

US warns N Korea not to continue missile, nuclear tests
US Vice President Mike Pence warned North Korea not to continue missile and nuclear tests. Pence, who is in Japan, also said his country’s era of strategic patience with North Korea was over. Mr Pence arrived in Seoul on Sunday hours after North Korea carried out a failed missile launch. On the other hand, North Korea’s deputy representative to the United Nations, Kim In Ryong, accused Washington of creating a situation where nuclear war could break out an any time and said Pyongyang’s next nuclear test would take place at a time and at a place where our headquarters deems necessary.

Turkey cabinet agrees to extend emergency after referendum
In Turkey, cabinet agreed to extend for another three months the state of emergency imposed after last July’s failed coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The decision came yesterday after a meeting of the National Security Council, chaired by Erdogan, to recommend its extension. The emergency was due to end on April 19. Its extension follows the approval by Turkish voters of constitutional changes boosting Erdogan’s powers on Sunday.

Trump advisers to meet to discuss Paris climate agreement today
In US, Advisers to President Donald Trump will meet today to discuss whether to recommend that he withdraw the United States from the Paris climate accord, a White House official said. The meeting comes before a summit of the Group of Seven industrial nations in late May, the deadline for the White House to take a position. Trump has said the United States should cancel the deal, but he has been mostly quiet on the issue since he was elected last November. White House officials, led by the National Economic Council, have recently been asking publicly traded energy companies for advice on whether to stay in the agreement.

Wholesale inflation slips to 5.70% even as food prices heat up
Inflation based on the wholesale price index slipped to 5(point)7 per cent in March this year. Wholesale Inflation fell as inflation in manufactured goods eased, although food prices hardened. Wholesale inflation, or WPI had stood at 6.55 per cent in February this year, and at minus 0.45 per cent in March last year.
N Srinivasan can’t represent Board at ICC meeting: SC
The Supreme Court said today that former BCCI president N bSrinivasan cannot represent the Board at the ICC meeting next week as he has been held guilty of conflict of interest. A bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra allowed BCCI’s Acting Secretary Amitabh Chaudhary to represent the cricket board at the ICC meeting on April 24 and directed BCCI CEO Rahul Johri to accompany him. The Court was hearing a plea seeking clarification on whether persons, who are rendered ineligible to hold posts in cricket bodies as per the July 18, 2016 judgement, can be nominated as BCCI representative to take part in the ICC meeting.

Progressive rock and jazz fusion guitar pioneer Allan Holdsworth passed away in California, U.S. He was 70. Holdsworth was known as a guitarist’s guitarist for his progressive rock and jazz fusion work with bands including Soft Machine, Gong, and U.K. He was known for his advanced knowledge of music, through which he incorporated a vast display of complex chord progressions and intricate solos.
