The 2016 International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was observed across the world on 25 November 2016. The theme for the day is “Orange the World – raise funds to end violence against women”. The colour orange in the theme symbolizes a better future without the pervasive human rights violation that affects 1 in 3 women and girls all over the globe. The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is observed to raise awareness about violence against women and discuss solutions that would work for women community.
i. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday accorded its approval for opening of one Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) each in “62 uncovered districts”. The outlay for the programme is Rs 2,871 crore, an official statement said.
ii. There will be total seven Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in Delhi — one each in East, West, South, North, North East, South East Delhi and Shahdara, while Jammu and Kashmir will have five such schools — one each in Srinagar, Bandipura, Ramban, Kishtwar and Phulwama.
iii. These Navodaya Vidyalaya are aimed at providing quality education to the talented children mainly from the rural areas. The move is expected to benefit nearly 35,000 students.The expenditure for this purpose during the 12th Five-Year Plan will be Rs 109 crore, with a spillover amount of Rs 2,761 crore from 2017-18 to 2024-25.
iv. There will be one new Navodaya Vidyalaya each in Andaman& Nicobar, Rajasthan, Haryana and Maharashtra; two each in Punjab, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh; three each in Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka; four each in Meghalaya and Tripura; five in Uttar Pradesh; eight Gujarat; and 11 in Chattisgarh.
The Union Government on 24 November 2016 announced major changes in the demonetisation plan after due consideration of all relevant aspects. The decisions were taken keeping in mind the operational aspects of the Scheme relating to cancellation of legal tender of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes.
Highlights of the announcement
With effect from 25 November 2016, the old currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes will no longer be exchanged at the bank counters. This will encourage people who are still unbanked, to open new bank accounts. However, there are some exemptions for certain transactions that will be valid till 15 December 2016. Have a look at these exemptions:
1) Payments for the transactions under all the exempted categories will now be accepted only through old Rs 500 notes.
2) Payment of school fees up to Rs 2000 per student in Central Government, State Government, Municipality and local body schools.
3) Payment of fees in Central or State Government colleges.
4) Pre-paid mobile top-up to a limit of Rs 500 per top-up.
5) Purchases from Consumer Cooperative Stores of up to Rs 5000 at a time.
6) Payment of current and arrear dues to utilities will be limited to only water and electricity.
7) Toll payment at the toll plazas can also be made through old Rs 500 notes from 3 December 2016 to 15 December 2016.
8) Foreign citizens can exchange foreign currency up to Rs 5000 per week.
i. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has announced new standards for manufacturers of products to check mis-labelling. Health supplements cannot be sold as ‘medicines’ any more as it has operationalised with immediate effect new standards for eight categories of products, including health supplements and nutraceuticals.
CEO Pawan Aggarwal said that FSSAI will start granting licences and approve products manufactured based on the new standards. However, these regulations will be enforced from January 2018. Every package of health supplement should carry the word ‘health supplement’ as well as an advisory warning ‘not for medicinal use’ prominently written, it said.
The Pune Underwater Festival, considered the first of its kind in India, will be held in Pune on Sunday. The festival will feature an underwater playground, an underwater photo booth and an underwater obstacle course. Visitors will also get a chance to play underwater hockey and water polo. The tickets range from 1,750 to 4,500.
Andhra Pradesh government is planning on distributing free mobile phones to allow economically-backward people to undertake digital transactions. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu introduced the proposal during a review meeting with RBI officials and bankers on Thursday. RBI officials have said 3,000 crore worth new currency notes are expected to reach the state by November 28.
The 5th International Tourism Mart (ITM) was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Manipur Shri Okram Ibobi Singh in presence of Union Tourism Secretary Shri Vinod Zutshi in Imphal Manipur. The ITM is organized by the Union Ministry of Tourism in association with the North Eastern States and the state of West Bengal.
Scottish charity ‘Social Bite’ has announced plans to build Scotland’s first ‘homeless village’ in Edinburgh. It plans to accommodate 20 people in ten low-cost, eco-friendly homes to help end the “vicious cycle” of homelessness. The residents will be moved to a more permanent accommodation after a year in the supervised ‘village’, where counselling and addiction therapy will also be provided.
i. SBI has reduced interest rates on bulk deposits ranging between Rs. 1-10 crore. The new rates are effective tomorrow, SBI website showed. With the revised interest rates, the 180-210 day fixed deposit will attract 1.90 per cent lower interest rate at 3.85 per cent as against the 5.75 per cent earlier.
ii. For fixed deposits between 1 year to 455 days, the rate has been lowered to 6 per cent from 4.25 per cent. For FDs between 7 days to 45 days, the new rate will be 1.25 per cent lower at 3.75 per cent. Earlier this month, SBI had cut fixed deposit rates for less than Rs. 1 crore on select maturities by up to 0.15 per cent.
i. State Bank of India on Friday said it will raise Rs 5,681 crore by issuance of preferential shares to the central government, its majority shareholder. “The Committee of Directors for Capital Raising of the Bank…has accorded its approval to fix the issue price at Rs 269.59 per share of face value of Re 1 each, including a premium of Rs 268.59 per share and accordingly, to issue 21,07,27,400 equity shares…On preferential basis to Government of India, for a consideration of Rs 5,680.99 crore,” SBI said in a BSE filing.
ii. Earlier this month, SBI had said it would also take fresh approval to raise up to Rs 15,000 crore through various means, including public offer and overseas issuance of shares.The funds raised will help the bank meet global risk norms, Basel III, which will kick in from March 2019. Shares of SBI were trading 0.19 per cent lower at Rs 261.20 on the BSE.
India’s largest public sector bank State Bank of India has launched its Unified Payments Interface enabled app called “SBI Pay”.The app is available only on Android platform as of now and allows users to pay or collect money from any phone number or bank account linked to any UPI app, SBI said in a media statement. The bank will add the facility to make merchant payments and enhance transaction limits on the app in “due course.
i. IDBI Bank, as part of its continuous initiatives to provide service and convenience to the customers, has launched IDBI Bank CASH @POS at the Mumbai Airport on November 20, 2016.Under this first of its kind facility, air travelers would be able to swipe their Visa/ Rupay Debit Cards linked to their Savings Bank Account and the bank officials would hand over the cash to them by completing the CASH @POS transaction.
ii. Presently this facility can only be used to withdraw an amount of Rs 2,000 per Debit Card per day as per the mandate of RBI for cash withdrawal at POS. Travelers who are customers of IDBI Bank and select other banks, that are enabled for CASH @POS would be benefitting by this service. Through this service IDBI Bank has opened another channel to ease the load of cash dispensation at various banking outlets.
i. YES Bank, the fifth largest private sector bank, on Thursday announced a partnership with Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) to digitise payment of bus tickets for its customers. For this the bank will install over 125 points of sale (PoS) terminals to facilitate booking through credit and debit cards at all GSRTC bus depots.
ii. The bank is already live with 50 terminals and will set up the remaining in the next couple of weeks as part of the first phase of implementation. The initiative will cover all municipal corporation locations and multiple cities including Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Vadodara and towns including Bhuj, Dahod, Palanpur and Valsad.
iii. The installation of these terminals will support the ‘less-cash’ economy envisaged by the Centre and enhance convenience for bus passengers. Over 50 per cent of cash transactions are expected to shift to card transactions, thereby reducing cash usage, according to a press release.
Leading mobile wallet MobiKwik has announced that its wallet service will soon be live at 391 toll plazas in India. The company has received an approval from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to enable commuters across all toll plazas in the country pay cashless through its mobile wallet to avoid traffic congestion due to the cash crunch.
Leading community-driven hospitality company Airbnb has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Self-Employed Women’s Association of India (SEWA). Through the partnership Airbnb will work with SEWA members to help them share their homes with Airbnb’s community of international and domestic guests, creating economic opportunities for women in rural areas and promoting tourism spend in parts of India that have not traditionally benefited from tourism and hospitality.
Home appliance maker Kenstar on Friday announced the appointment of Rajiv Kenue as its Chief Operating Officer with immediate effect. Kenue will be responsible for contributing to Kenstar’s strategy for establishing it as one of the most preferred premium brands in India. The brand is offering its patrons an extensive portfolio of products ranging from air coolers, water heaters, microwave, mixer grinders and a host of other kitchen appliances.
i. Manoj BajpayeeBollywood actor Manoj Bajpayee on 24 November 2016 won the Best Actor Award at the 10th Asia Pacific Screen Awards, beating Nawazuddin Siddiqui who was awarded a special mention in the same category.
Manoj won the Best Performance award for his role as Professor Siras in “Aligarh”, a powerful and personal drama based on true events. While, Nawazuddin received a Special Mention in the Best Performance category for his role in Anurag Kashyap’s “Raman Raghav 2.0”. The winners in the 10th Asia Pacific Screen Awards were announced at an award ceremony in Brisbane.
ii. The event was hosted by Australian actor David Wenham and presenter Anjali Rao. The 2016 edition of the awards marked the 10th year of the awards in recognising and promoting cinematic excellence and cultural diversity of the world’s fastest growing film region comprising of 70 countries.
Messaging app Telegram has launched Telegraph, a platform for publishing content anonymously. The website does not require users to create an account or sign in through social media. Users can also insert videos or tweets by dropping in the link, and also embed images from their device.
Australia’s former women’s captain Karen Rolton has been inducted into the ICC’s Hall of Fame on November 24, 2016 at a ceremony during the dinner break on the opening Karen Roltonday of the third day/night Test between Australia and South Africa. Rolton was presented with a personalised cap by ICC Chief Executive David Richardson. She has become the 81st player to be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame and the sixth woman to receive the award.
PV Sindhu has surpassed Saina Nehwal for the first time in the Badminton World Federation rankings to become the highest-ranked Indian shuttler. Sindhu jumped two spots to be ranked 9th, while Saina dropped five places to the11th spot, which is her lowest ranking in seven years. Saina had not been outside the top 10 since entering it in 2009.
Maha Haddioui from Morocco is the Arab world’s first female professional golfer. Haddioui, who started playing golf when she was 13 years old, is now in the European Tour’s Top 50 and also represented Morocco at the Summer Olympic Games. The video features her discussing the struggles she faced to become a professional golfer.
Veteran journalist Dileep Padgaonkar, a well-known author and former editor of Times Of India, died at a private hospital in Pune on Friday morning, officials said. He was 72. He was admitted to the Ruby Hospital on November 18 following a massive heart attack.
