    International Tiger Day: July 29th

    ·       International Tiger Day, also known as Global Tiger Day, is an annual celebration to raise awareness for tiger conservation, held annually on 29 July.
    ·       We have lost 97% of all wild tigers in a bit over 100 years.
    ·       Instead of 100,000, as few as 3000 live in the wild today, last year it was 3200.A number of Tiger species have already been extinct.
    ·       Tigers are most vulnerable to extinction.
    Centre approves 716.59 cr disaster relief to UP, Rajasthan and Manipur
    ·       A high-level committee chaired by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh approved a total of Rs 716.59 crore’s worth of central assistance to UP, Rajasthan and Manipur.
    ·       Earlier this year, the three states were hit by drought, a hailstorm and an earthquake, respectively.
    ·       The committee approved financial aid worth Rs 622.76 crore for UP, Rs 79.18 crore for Rajasthan and Rs 14.65 crore for Manipur.
    ·       It made its decision after examining proposals based on a report compiled by a team which had visited the three states.
    IT skills imparted to over 7 lakh school teachers in India: Microsoft

    ·       Microsoft has so far equipped more than 7.7 lakh government school teachers with IT skills across 12 states in India under its Project Shikshaprogramme launched in 2003, the tech giant said on Friday.
    ·       Aimed at developing skills among youth from under-privileged communities to drive employability and entrepreneurship, Project Jyoti helped establish over 1700 enterprises run by youth in the country.
    First woman head of aviation regulator moves out
    ·       The first woman chief of aviation regulator DGCA M Sathiyavathy was today named as new Union Labour Secretary.
    ·       Sathiyavathi, a 1982-batch IAS officer of the union territories cadre, was in September last year appointed as the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
    ·       The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has approved her appointment as Officer on Special Duty in the Ministry of Labour and Employment with immediate effect, an order issued by Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) said.
    Parliament passes CAMPA Bill

    ·        It will pave the way for unlocking Rs 41,000 crore earmarked for forest land, lying unspent for about four years.
    ·        The efforts to preserve India’s forest and jungle life will soon get a legislative boost as the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Bill, 2016 (CAMPA Bill) has got an approval from the RajyaSabha.
    ·        Loksabha has already approved it, and the bill is now just a step away from becoming law. Govt has said that the bill is a step to ensure empowerment of tribals and rural people.
    Centre forms ‘Disha’ for timely implementation of Central Schemes
    ·       The Centre today announced the formation of District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DDCMC) to be named “Disha” for effective development coordination of almost all the programmes of Central Government, whether it is for infrastructure development or Social and human resource development.
    ·       Making a suo-motu statement in the LokSabha, the Union Minister of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water and Sanitation ShriNarendra Singh Tomar said that to begin with, these Committees would monitor the implementation of 28 schemes and programmes of Ministry of Rural Development and other Ministries to promote synergy and convergence for greater impact.
    Indo-Bangla meet: Delhi, Dhaka talk anti-terror cooperation, border management

    ·       Home Minister Rajnath Singh and his Bangladesh counterpart Asaduzzaman Khan Thursday agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation on anti-terror efforts.
    ·       Both leaders concurred on the need to immediately operationalise the Agreement on Combating Terrorism and Organised Crime and Illicit Drug Trafficking between the two countries.
    ·       During the Home Minister-level bilateral talks between India and Bangladesh in New Delhi Thursday, the ministers also agreed on the need to sign a Repatriation Treaty to simplify and expedite the process of repatriation of each other’s nationals. Both sides also agreed to undertake urgent action for the repatriation of released prisoners and victims of human trafficking.
    SBI partners Oracle to support Digital India

    ·        State Bank of India and tech giant Oracle have come together for corporate India’s largest volunteering programme to bring ‘digital fluency’ among underprivileged school students.
    ·        Under the programme – D-Change – both the organisations will deploy resources, including staff and equipment, to train students in the basics of using information, communication and technology (ICT) tools.
    LIC signs up Axis Bank as bancassurance partner

    ·        India’s largest insurer Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has signed an agreement with private sector lender Axis Bank as its bancassurance partner wherein the bank will distribute LIC’s products to its customers.
    ·        In the preliminary phase, the bank will distribute LIC’s life insurance products across its branches in West Bengal, Bangalore and Haryana – Panchkula. Additionally, the bank will also provide post sales services such as premium collection and renewal of policies.
    eBay India claims higher product listings than Amazon India

    ·       E-commerce marketplace eBay India today said shoppers can access over 100 million live product listings on eBay.in and its global easy buy platform geb.ebay.in across electronics, lifestyle, media and other categories.
    ·       In comparison, Amazon.in, which has the highest percentage of shipments so far, lists over 65 million products, while Flipkart stocks about 40 million products and Snapdeal lists over 35 million products.
    A10 Acquires Appcito, Makes Move into the Cloud

    ·       The company establishes a cloud business unit that will complement the application delivery controller and security services appliances.
    ·       A10 Networks is accelerating its push into the cloud-based applications services market with the recent acquisition of Appcito, which sold application delivery services via the cloud.
    ·       Appcito, which A10 bought in June but is only talking about now, has become the larger company’s cloud unit, which officials said will help A10 differentiate from such competitors as F5 Networks and Citrix Systems.
    OKI Completes Installations of 600 Cash Recycling ATMs for State Bank of India

    ·       OKI (TOKYO: 6703) today announced the installations of 600 sets of cash recycling ATMs, ATM-Recycler G7, in June 2016, to the State Bank of India (hereinafter referred to as SBI), the largest bank in India.
    ·       This marks OKI’s second large-project deployment of its cash recycling ATMs for SBI in India.
    ·       SBI decided to procure OKI’s cash recycling ATMs in 2015 and deploy them in four of its designated regions across India.
    ·       This project follows earlier deployments by OKI that provided an opportunity to thoroughly evaluate the performance of OKI’s robust cash recycling technology vis-à-vis the Indian currency environment.
    New Chief Justice of Patna High Court sworn in

    ·       Justice Iqbal Ahmed Ansari was on Monday sworn in as the Chief Justice of Patna High Court by Bihar Governor RamnathKovind at a function herein Raj Bhawan.
    ·       Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, his Deputy Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Sushil Kumar Modi, Speaker Vijay Kumar Choudhary, Council Chairman AwadheshNarain Singh and others were present at the occasion.
    In a first, govt gives 2-year extension to Railway Board Chairman A K Mital
    ·       In a move that has taken the rail bureaucracy by surprise, the NDA government gave a two-year extension to Railway Board Chairman A K Mital, a first for the national transporter.
    ·       Mital was to retire end of the month. Effectively Friday would have been his last working day. But the order for his extension came in the afternoon from the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister NarendraModi.
    NDDB Chairman T Nanda Kumar Resigns

    ·       T Nanda Kumar, chairman of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) that controls Mother Dairy, has resigned with three more years left for his tenure to end.
    ·       An agriculture ministry official said his resignation has been accepted and that a replacement would be found in due course. Former Amul Managing Director BM Vyas and Shankar Chaudhary, a BJP leader and chairman of Dairy, are the likely contenders to lead the state-run agency, said a source in the dairy sector.
    C.K. Mishra appointed new Health Secretary
    ·       C.K. Mishra, a 1983 batch IAS officer of the Bihar cadre, has been appointed the new Health Secretary, an official statement said.
    ·       Mishra will replace B.P. Sharma, a 1981 batch IAS officer of the Bihar cadre, who has been appointed secretary, Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
    ·       N.S. Kang, a 1983 batch IAS officer of the Punjab cadre, associated with the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) as additional secretary, has been made Secretary and Director General of the organisation after upgradation of his post.
    Anurag Thakur becomes first serving BJP MP to join Territorial Army

    ·       BharatiyaJanata Party (BJP) MP from Himachal Pradesh and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Anurag Thakur on Friday was commissioned into the Territorial Army as a Lieutenant by the Chief of Army Staff General Dalbir S Suhag.
    ·       Taking a pledge to serve the nation, he said that when the time arises, he would be ready to serve the Army.Lt. Thakur became the first serving BJP Member of the Parliament to join the military force. The Territorial Army is the second line of defence after the Indian Army.
    Four New Writers Get Jnanpith ‘Navlekhan’ Award

    ·       Four writers, three of them from Rajasthan, were today given the BharatiyaJnanpith’s 11th Navlekhan award for the year 2015 in a ceremony here today.
    ·       AmlenduTiwari and BalramKawant were awarded for their respective novels ‘Parityakt’, and ‘Sara Morila,’ while Om Naagar and Tasneem Khan were awarded for their non-fictions ‘Nib KeChire Se’ and ‘Yeh Mere Rahnuma’ respectively.
    ·       The awardees were chosen by a selection panel headed by senior writer and journalist MadhusudanAnand and comprising of eminent literary figures Vishnu Nagar, Govind Prasad and Om Nischal.
    ·       The ceremony was attended by Jananpith Director LeeladharMandloi who said authorsaTiwari and Om Nagar would be given a cash awards of Rs. 50,000 each along with a certificate of merit and an idol of Vagdevi.
    Free Wi-Fi at Indian railway stations being used by 2 million people: SundarPichai

    ·       About two million people are logging on to free Wi-Fi deployed by Google and RailTel at major railway stations across India every month, chief of the global search giant SundarPichai said.
    ·       The internet giant had teamed up with RailTel, the telecom arm of the Indian Railways, to provide free Wi-Fi at 23 stations across the country.

    ·       Germany captain Bastian Schweinsteiger on Friday announced his retirement from international duty with immediate effect.
    ·       The 31-year-old Manchester United midfielder, who won his 120th and final cap in Germany’s 2-0 defeat to France in the semi-finals of Euro 2016, revealed the news on his official Twitter account.

    ·       Tabla maestro PanditLacchuMaharaj passed away in Varanasi on Thursday. He was 72.
    ·       His family members said that he was being treated at a private nursing home where he passed away at 1 AM.
    ·       One of the frontline tabla players in the world, PtLacchuMaharaj’s funeral will take place on Friday.
    ·       Other than his professional performances all over the world, he played the tabla in many Bollywood films.
    James Alan McPherson (1943 – 2016)
    ·       Pulitzer Prize-winning author James Alan McPherson died July 27, 2016, in a hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, according to multiple news sources. He was 72.
    ·       The cause of death was reportedly complications of pneumonia.
    ·       McPherson won the Pulitzer Prize in 1978 for “Elbow Room,” a 1977 collection of short stories. He was the first African-American to win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
