    ·       Union Government released the funds under various sections of Swachh Bharat Mission to enhance the quality of Sanitation of Urban areas of Punjab state.
    ·       Funds Sanctioned: 16 Crore 79 Lakh Rupees
    ·       No. of Municipal Corporation City: 9 except Ludhiana Corporation
    ·       Union Government has allocated221 Crore Rupees to achieve the mission till October, 2019
    ·       Ludhiana funded under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.
    Madhya Pradesh High Court terms reservation in promotions in the State as unconstitutional:
    ·       The Madhya Pradesh high court struck down reservations for scheduled castes and tribes in government job promotions.
    ·       The court observed that giving priority to reserved categories over general classes in promotions is not justice.
    ·       The order affects above30,000 employees and officers with possible repercussions in other states.
    ·       The division bench chaired byChief Justice AM Khan wilkar set aside promotions under the 2002 Madhya Pradesh Public Service Rules that reserve 16% posts for scheduled castes and 20% for scheduled tribes in elevations saying they violated Supreme Court guidelines.

    Government launches MICE initiative for upgradation of tourism sector:
    ·       Union government has launched an initiative namedMICE which is based on meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions for the upgradation of tourism sector in India.
    ·       The tourism Minister Makesh Sharma in the Lok Shaba during question hour.
    ·       Tourism Ministry allocated funds to the States and Union Territories administrations to develop tourism-related infrastructure.
    ·       Earlier Tourism Ministry has launchedSwadesh Darshan scheme to develop time-bound tourist circuits in the country.
    NHAI to raise 55k cr in 2016-17 via bonds:

    ·       The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to raise 55,000 crore through the issue of bonds in the financial year 2016-17, Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Pon Radhakrishnan said.
    ·       The funds will be used towards part financing various projects implemented by the NHAI and other national highways, he added.
    India third largest e-learning market: Coursera
    ·       According toonline learning site Coursera, with 1.3 million registered learners, India is the third largest e-learning market globally after the US and China.
    ·       It also revealed that Bengaluru has the maximum e-learners in India.
    ·       While most active online learners in India were young professionals in their 20s and 30s, male learners constituted 76% and female learners formed 24%.
    Government to monitor illegal mining via satellite:

    ·       The government will monitor mines with the help of satellites starting this year, after a three-month long project found rampant illegal extraction of limestone in the state, Mines Secretary Balvinder Kumar said.
    ·       Reportedly, state-run Indian Bureau of Mines is digitising maps of all mines under the government’s purview to check whether companies are mining outside their lease areas.
    Supreme Court banned all diesel cabs in NCR-Delhi from May 1:
    ·       The Supreme Court of India decided against extending the deadline for phasing out diesel cabs in National Capital Region (NCR). It ordered the diesel cabs to go off the roads from 1 May 2016.
    ·       It had stopped sale of diesel SUVs and luxury cars with more than 2000 cc engine capacity in the national capital in 2015.
    ·       However, a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice TS Thakur asked Delhi Police to pay 30 percent of the real value of the vehicle to be purchased by it as Environment Compensation Charge (ECC) or green cess as a pre-condition for their registration with the transport department.
    ·       The bench, also comprising Justices AK Sikri and R Banumathi, exempted Delhi Jal Board (DJB) from paying ECC on the ground that around 250 water tankers would be supplying water to the citizens of the city.
    Indian Railways signed MoU with Haryana& Punjab to plant trees alongside Railway Track:

    ·       Indian Railways signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with forest departments of Haryana and Punjab to plant 5 trees alongside Railway Track on Railway Land Boundary.
    ·       The MoU was signed by Pankaj Saxena, Chief Engineer /P&D, Northern Railway on behalf of Railways whereas it was byDr Amrinder Kaur, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) from forest departments.
    ·       It paves way for planting 5 lakh trees during this season.
    National Action Plan to boost jobs opportunities for disabled people: Gehlot
    ·       Minister of Social Justice and empowerment Thaawar Chand Gehlot has said that the National Action Plan for skill development of persons with disabilities (PwDs) has been announced on March 21st last year with a view to impart them skill training.
    ·       The minister informed the House that the National Handicapped Finance Development Corporation (NHFDC) and seven national institutes under his ministry are implementing skill development programmes for the disabled.
    ·       Mr Gehlot informed the House that during 2015-16,over 17 thousand persons with disabilities were trained through NHFDC.
    ·       Overten thousand persons with disabilitieshave been trained under theskill development programme by the 7 national institutes.
    Over hundred villages electrified last week under Gram Jyoti Yojna:

    ·       More than hundred villages have been electrified across the country during last week from 25th April to 1st May of this month under Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojna.
    ·       Center has decided to electrify 18,452 unelectrified villages by 1st May, 2018. Till date, 7,549 villages have been electrified. Out of remaining, 10,903 villages, 444 villages are uninhabited.
    ·       Out 104 electrified villages, 17 villages belong to Arunachal Pradesh , 17 in Assam, 16 in Jharkhand, 10 in Rajasthan, 4 in Bihar, 4 in Chhattisgarh, 16 in Odisha , 7 in Madhya Pradesh, 4 in Manipur ,7 in Uttar Pradesh and 2 in Himachal Pradesh .
    Telangana to set up Spices Park in Nizamabad:
    ·       The Telangana government is setting up a Spices Park in Nizamabad. The park will come up in Padigal in Nizamabad district with an outlay of ₹31 crore.
    ·       “The park is coming up in 40 acres, catering to farmers in Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Adilabad and Warangal.
    ·       Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, Minister Agriculture and Cooperation said the park would primarily focus on turmeric farmers.
    ·       The idea is to eliminate middlemen and provide the farmers with remunerative prices for the commodity.
    Kaleshwaram irrigation project launched in Telangana:

    ·       Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao today performed the Bhoomi Puja for the Kaleshwaram project aimed at harnessing the Godavari river water through a series of barrages, reservoirs and lift irrigation schemes.
    ·       Rao said the new State will be able to use water from both Krishna and Godavari rivers as per the allocations made.
    ·       The State proposes to lift about 160 tmc of water using lift irrigation facilities by utilising water from Pranahitha and Godavari at Medigadda in Karimnagar.
    ·       The project is expectedto create irrigation facility for 18 lakh acres and stabilising about 12 lakh acres.
    7.5k crore allocated for space dept in FY17 budget:
    ·       According to SocialCops’ analysis, 7,509 crore has been allocated for the Department of Space in India’s 2016-17 budget, 0.38% of the total budget outlay of 19.78 lakh crore.
    ·       The US spends nearly the same percentage on NASA at 0.48% of its $4.15 trillion budget. The Department of Space’s budget has increased every fiscal since 2012-13, when 6,715 crore was allocated.
    Supreme Court appointed RM Lodha-panel to reform Medical Council of India:
    ·       The Supreme Court of India appointed a three-member panel headed by former Chief Justice of India (CJI) RM Lodha to oversee the functions of the Medical Council of India.
    ·       It is the regulator of medical profession and education in India.
    ·       Besides Lodha, the panel consists of formerController and Auditor General (CAG) Vinod Rai and Dr SK Sareen.
    ·       Earlier, RM Lodha headed a three-member panel appointed by the top court to look into the 2013 betting scandal in the Indian Premier league (IPL) and the functioning of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and also headed the committee appointed to sell assets of Pearls Agrotech Corporation Ltd (PACL) and refund 49 thousand crore rupees to the investors.
    80 countries to attend World Humanitarian Summit:

    ·       Around 80 countries may attend the first-ever World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul this month to re-think how to confront global crises created by the Syrian Civil War.
    ·       The UN under-secretary general for humanitarian affairs Stephen O’Brien said that around 45 countries will be represented in the Summit by their heads of state or heads of government.
    ·       World governments, international organisations and aid agencies are struggling to cope with the largest refugee crisis since World War II affecting six crore people on the move.
    ·       The three-day gathering will seek to chart a course with new strategies to address humanitarian crises and the rising cost of aid efforts, said O’Brien.
    Craig Wright revealed as Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto:
    ·       Australian entrepreneur Craig Wright has publicly identified himself as Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto.
    ·       Mr Wright has provided technical proof to back up his claim using coins known to be owned by Bitcoin’s creator.
    ·       Prominent members of the Bitcoin community and its core development team say they have confirmed his claims.
    ·       Jon Matonis, an economist and one of the founding directors of the Bitcoin.
    ISIS developing Google-style driverless cars for attacks:

    ·       ISIS technicians are working to develop a Google-style driverless car that could navigate itself into a crowded area before detonating an explosive device, a NATO security expert has warned.
    ·       ISIS’s research and development department in the terror group’s de facto Syrian capital, Raqqa, is believed to be producing the vehicles at the same time as US Internet giant Google attempts to perfect the same technology.
    ·       The technology would remove the need for suicide bombers and could help the death cult – also known by its Arabic acronym Daesh – cope with the dramatic drop in its numbers, which has seen its fighting force cut almost in half.
    ·       The FBI has long argued autonomous cars could be used by criminals as lethal weapons.
    Japan announces $7 billion plan to develop Mekong region:
    ·       Japan has pledged 750 billion yen ($7 billion) initiative to promote development in the Mekong region, which encompasses parts of Vietnam, Laos and Thailand through which the river flows.
    ·       The announcement was made byJapan’s foreign minister Fumio Kishida in a speech at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.

    ·       Rohit Sharma became the Brand Ambassador of world famous Swiss luxury watch maker Hublot.
    ·       The Mumbai batsman is the second cricketer who have been assigned for the role.
    ·       Earlier renowned cricketer after former Australian captain Michael Clarke have been associated with the brand.
    ·       He will be seen Rohit Sharma promoting the Hublot’s signature Classic Fusion Aerofusion Chronograph edition in the upcoming days.

    Vijay Mallya resigns from Rajya Sabha:
    ·       Former Chairman of United Spirits Vijay Mallya resigned from the Rajya Sabha, a day before an Ethics Panel meeting to discuss his expulsion.
    ·       The panel had on April 25 given Mallya a week’s time to file a response against his expulsion.
    ·       Notably, the Foreign Ministry has also initiated deportation proceedings against Mallya over alleged money laundering charges.
    Practo hires former InMobi CFO Manish Dugar:

    ·       Healthcare startup Practo has hired Manish Dugar, former CFO of mobile advertising network InMobi, as its new global CFO.
    ·       Dugar will be responsible for scaling businesses across geographies at Practo.
    ·       Founded in 2008 by Shashank ND and Abhinav Lal, Practo lets users find doctors, clinics and diagnostic labs and book instant appointments with them.
    Indian American Sikh woman, Harmeet Kaur Dhillon, elected to key Republican position:
    ·       An Indian American Sikh woman from California, Harmeet Kaur Dhillon, was elected to an important position in the Republican Party at the US national level.
    ·       Chandigarh-born Harmeet Kaur Dhillon was elected as the newest national committee woman of the Republican National Committee on 1 May 2016.
    ·       Earlier, she was earlier the vice chairman of the California GOP. She was the first woman elected to this position of vice chair of the California Republican Party.
    Sachin becomes Rio Olympics Goodwill Ambassador:

    ·       Former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar today accepted Indian Olympic Association’s invitation to be India’s Goodwill Ambassador at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
    ·       He joins Salman Khan and former Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra as Goodwill Ambassadors for the Indian contingent.
    SBI lowers lending rates by 5 bps to 9.15%:

    ·       State owned SBI lowered its lending rates based on marginal cost of funds by 5 basis points (0.05%) to 9.15%. The new minimum lending rates are effective from May 1, the bank said.
    ·       With this, the home loan interest rate for women borrowers has come down to 9.35%, while for others it now stands lower at 9.40%.
    Australia central bank cuts rates to record low:
    ·       The Reserve Bank of Australia cut its benchmark interest rates by 25 basis points to a record low of 1.75%.
    ·       This is the central bank’s first rate cut in a year which reportedly seeks to restrain a rising currency and insulate the economy from disinflation. Notably, the Australian government is presenting its budget today

    ·       Veteran actors Dharmendra and Jeetendra were honoured by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) for their contribution to the film industry.
    ·       They were honoured as part of the Maharashtra Day event by MNS.

    Vardy named Football Writers’ Player of the Year:
    ·       Leicester City forward Jamie Vardy has been voted the 2016 Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association.
    ·       Vardy was voted ahead of teammate Riyad Mahrez, West Ham’s Dmitri Payet and Tottenham’s Harry Kane among others.
    ·       The 29-year-old striker has 24 goals under his belt this season, including a Premier League record-breaking feat of scoring in 11 consecutive matches.
    BCCI nominates Virat Kohli for Khel Ratna award:

    ·       The BCCI nominated Indian Test captain Virat Kohli for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award and Ajinkya Rahane for the Arjuna award.
    ·       This comes four years after the BCCI nominated former Indian skipper Rahul Dravid for the award.
    ·       Notably, Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni are the only two cricketers to have won the Khel Ratna so far.

    IMF retains India growth forecast at 7.5% for 2016-17:

    ·       India remains the fastest-growing large economy in the world, the International Monetary Fund has retained its growth forecast for the country at 7.5 percent for this year.
    ·       The IMF said, growth in Asia and the Pacific is expected to remain strong, at 5.3 per cent, this year and the next. But China and Japan continue to face challenges.
    ·       China’s growth is forecast to moderate from 6.9 per cent in 2015, to 6.5 per cent this year.
    Zone Startups to launch accelerator for women entrepreneurs:
    ·       Mumbai based Zone Startups to launch empoWer to support women entrepreneurs who are building technology ventures.
    ·       Zone Startups India is supported by Department of Science and Technology.

    Apollo Hospitals signs MoU with Osler Health for research in chronic disease:
    ·       Chennai based Apollo Hospitals has signed a MoU with William Osler Health System aims to positively impact the health and wellness of the patients they serve.
    ·       Under this initiative scientists at the two organisations will begin by identifying areas of cooperation, collaboration and innovation, particularly around the range of diseases like diabetes, cardiovas Apollo Hospital cular diseases and cancer.

    Reliance Defence gets 15 new defence licences:

    ·       Anil Ambani-led Reliance Defence has received 15 new industrial licences to manufacture a range of defence equipment, taking its total number of licences to 25, the highest held by a private firm in India.
    ·       Reliance Defence had last week collaborated with three Ukrainian firms including two state-owned firms for their range of military equipment.
    Dell-EMC merger to be called Dell Technologies:
    ·       The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dell, Michael Dell, announced thatthe tech firm’s $70 billion merger with data storage company EMC will be called Dell Technologies.
    ·       The acquisition by Dell, which was announced last year, is the largest till date in the tech industry.
    ·       The combined enterprise business, though, will go by the name Dell-EMC, he added
    Realty firms to build IT-SEZ in Pune with 1k crore:

    ·       Realty firms K Raheja and Gera Developments have partnered to construct an IT-Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Pune with an investment of about 1,000 crore over the next four years.
    ·       The firms will also be in charge of operation of the 30-acre land in Pune’s Kharadi area. The construction of the project is expected to start in August this year.
    Uber lets Chinese users pay via Alipay globally:
    ·       Uber expanded its partnership with Alipay, a Chinese payment app owned by Alibaba, to let Chinese travellers pay Uber fares via Alipay accounts across the world.
    ·       This will allow users to pay for international rides in yuan, eliminating the need for dual currency credit cards, Uber said.
    ·       User will also be able to book Uber rides directly from Alipay.
    Amazon surprises with new reef system:

    ·       Scientists from University of Georgia in the U.S. and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro have discovered a new reef system at the mouth of the Amazon River.
    ·       The study observed that a massive coral reef that stretches for some 600 miles.
    ·       The reef system extents over3,600-square miles along the ocean floor, stretching from French Guiana to Brazil’s Maranhao.
    ·       As large rivers getting vacant into the world’s oceans in areas known as plumes they create gaps in the reef distribution along the tropical shelves that makes finding a reef in the Amazon plume.
    ·       Scientists carried out an expedition to study the Amazon River plume looked for evidence of a reef system along the continental shelf.
    Leicester City crowned Premier League champions:

    ·       Leicester City won their maiden Premier League title after second-placed Tottenham Hotspur squandered a two-goal advantage to draw against Chelsea.
    ·       The result meant second placed Tottenham will not be able to surpass Leicester City who has a seven point lead at the top of the table.
    ·       This is the first time in the club’s 132-year history that Leicester is champion of England.
    India earn two Olympic weightlifting berths:
    ·       Indian weightlifters have earned two quota places at Rio Olympics 2016 through their performances at the Senior Asian Weightlifting Championships in Uzbekistan.
    ·       The women’s team finished third with 100 points while the men’s team finished sixth with 129 points. The final Indian representatives, one each in men’s and women’s categories will be decided by national-level trials ahead of Rio 2016.
    UK man creates 122 m freedive record on 1 breath:

    ·       UK born New Zealand-based freediver William Trubridge has set a new world record by plunging 122 metres into the Deans Blue Hole in Bahamas on one breath.
    ·       By holding his breath for four minutes and 24 seconds, Trubridge bested his own 15th world-record 121-metre mark.
    ·       Trubridge will attempt for another world record in the Bahamas on Tuesday.
    Former J&K Congress minister Romesh Sharma passes away:
    ·       Former Jammu and Kashmir Minister and senior Congress leader Romesh Sharma today passed away after a prolonged illness.
    ·       He was 65. Ex-Congress Minister and famous leader from Nowshera Constituency, Sharma passed away while undergoing treatment at a hospital in New Delhi.
