PM Modi extends his greetings to Indian Navy on Navy Day
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended his greetings to all members of the Indian Navy and their families on the occasion of Navy Day (04th December). The day is observed on 4th of December every year to celebrate the magnificence, achievements and role of the naval force to the country. During the India-Pakistan war of 1971, the Indian Navy played a significant role in the bombing of the Karachi harbor. The name of the operation was Operation Trident and it was launched on 4 December.
Heart of Asia meet: Modi, Ghani hold bilateral talks; focus on trade, security
President Ashraf Ghani thanked India for helping with “no strings attached” at the inaugural session of the sixth Heart of Asia conference that began in Amritsar on Sunday. Ghani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had held bilateral talks ahead of the start of the conference, discussing a range of issues including trade and investment, defence and infrastructure.
The talks also spoke of firming up an air cargo service pact between the countries, which will give India leverage in Afghanistan as Pakistan continues to deny transit link through its territory. In the meeting, Modi assured Ghani of India’s continued support for ensuring peace and stability in Afghanistan.

PM Modi visits Golden Temple with Afghan President Ghani
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani took a heritage walk and visited the Golden Temple yesterday evening soon after arriving in Amritsar to attend the Heart of Asia conference. MrModi and MrGhani walked through the renovated heritage corridor before reaching Harmandir Sahib, popularly known as Golden Temple, where large number of people welcomed them.
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, his deputy Sukhbir Singh Badal and Union minister Harsimrat Kaur also accompanied Mr Modi and Mr Ghani to the Golden Temple.
7th World Ayurveda Meet Opens in Kolkata
The 7th World Ayurveda Congress (WAC) has been organized at Science City, Kolkata from December 1 to December 4, 2016 by the World Ayurveda Foundation with support of Ministry of AYUSH, and the State Government of West Bengal. The focus of this 7th World Ayurveda Congress is – ‘Strengthening the Ayurveda Ecosystem’.7th World Ayurveda Meet Opens in Kolkata There are three major components of the program this year:
· Public Outreach session comprising of the Ayurveda Expo, the Ayurveda Clinics for the general public and Public Lectures.
· Influencing Policy and
· Promoting Science
To facilitate development and growth of AYUSH system of medicine, the Ministry of AYUSH is also organizing AROGYA Expo from 1st-4th December, 2016 at Science City, Kolkata to coincide with the 7th World Ayurveda Congress. The Minister of State (IC) for AYUSH, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik inaugurated the Arogya Expo on December 1, 2016.
2016 Tripitak Sutrapath Mahotasava begin in Bihar
The 10-days Tripitak Sutrapath Mahotasava has begin at Bodhgaya in Bihar on December 2, 2016. It will end on December 11, 2016. Over three thousand Buddhist from many countries are participating in this festival. They will pay special puja to Lord Buddha for world peace.
3 villages of Patna being made cashless
In Bihar, three villages of Patna district are being made cashless. This initiative has been taken by Bank of Baroda. AIR correspondent reports that a campaign about digital cashless transaction has been launched for about ten thousand villagers by the bank.
Representatives of the bank are visiting on the doorstep each house of Bind Toli of Kurji ,Basti of Maner and Patsa Village of Bihta to open their bank accounts. Chief Manager of Bank Of Baroda Atish Chandra Mishra told AIR villagers are being encouraged to adopt cashless transaction. Along with these initiatives the bank is also facilitating villagers for enrollment of Aadhaar card which is going to be launchpad of cashless transaction.
Villagers are also being made aware about different social security schemes including Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojna. After accomplishment of these three villages cashless Bank of Baroda has planned to make another 8 villages.
Emirates launched world’s shortest service on largest plane Airbus A380
Emirates on December 1, 2016, launched the world’s shortest scheduled service on an Airbus A380, flying it from Dubai to Doha within 80 minutes and 70 minutes in return journey. The A380 flight landed at Hamad International Airport in Doha covering a total of 379 km route, the shortest on which the world’s largest passenger aircraft is used.
Emirates launched world’s shortest service. The double-decker aircraft has 14 first class suites, 76 business class flat-bed seats and 429 economy class seats.. The double-decker A380 is the world’s largest commercial aircraft in service. It comes complete with Emirates’ prized amenities like shower spas and first class private suites.
Hailakhandi first in Assam to pay tea workers via bank account
Hailakandi has become the first district in Assam to pay wages to tea garden workers through individual bank accounts before the December 15, 2016 deadline set by the state government for cashless transactions to the plantation workers. At least 504 workers of Burnie Braes tea estate received their wages through bank accounts and the payment was made through five Banking Correspondents (CSPs) of Assam.
DCB Bank Launches Cippy Wallet for Online Transaction
Private sector lender DCB Bank launched its own mobile and tab based digital wallet Cippy Wallet app on December 2, 2016 in New Delhi to encourage consumers to experience cash free purchases from the mobile phone for day-to-day needs. The app offers a ‘Split-Bill’ feature which anables any payment made using Cippy Wallet or other modes such as card or cash can be easily split between users to share it with friends and family with a single click on the mobile phone.
The Cippy Wallet user can male cash free payments can be made using the mobile phone camera to scan the mVisa QR code at the retailer or service provider, select the amount to be paid and use their Cippy password to authorize payment.
The digital payment is made to the bank account selected by the shop keeper or service provider while applying for mVisa QR code from their respective bankCippy Wallet app is user friendly and users can login with their name, mobile number and email ID to fill the Wallet through Debit, Credit Card or internet banking.
RBI to issue new Rs 20 and 50 notes; old currency notes still valid
The Reserve Bank of India will shortly issue new Rs 20 and Rs 50 notes in the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005. These notes will bear the signature of RBI Governor Urjit R Patel.Old banknotes of the two denominations will continue to be legal tender.
The year ‘2016’ will be printed on the reverse of the banknotes. “The Reserve Bank of India will shortly issue 50 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005, without inset letter in both the number panels, bearing signature of Dr. Urjit R Patel, Governor, Reserve Bank of India, and the year of printing ‘2016’ printed on the reverse of the banknote,”said RBI in a statement.
India, Russia to sign agreement on Kudankulam units 5 and 6 this month
India and Russia are likely to sign the General Framework Agreement (GFA) on Kudankulam units 5 and 6 by this month. “Leaders of the two countries (Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin) had set a deadline to sign the General Framework Agreement for units 5 and 6 by the end of this month. The work is on and we are trying to stick to deadline,” a top official of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) said.
The unit 1 and 2 of Kudankulam plant were built at a cost of Rs 20,962 crore. A major share of power generated in the plant goes to Tamil Nadu, followed by Karnataka, Kerala and Puducherry. Unit 1 was started in October 2013, while the second unit was connected to grid in August this year.
Unit 3 and 4 of the Kudankulam are expected to be commissioned by 2022-23.The Russian built Water-Water Energetic Reactor (VVER) reactor Kudankulam unit 1 and 2 are the largest power generating stations in the country. After all the units (1-6) of the plant are commissioned, the nuclear park will have the power generating capacity of 6,000 MW.
UAE-based Indian teen Kehkashan Basu wins Children’s Peace Prize
Kehkashan Basu, a 16-year-old UAE-based Indian teenager won the International Children’s Peace Prize for her work towards climate justice and combating environmental degradation. The award was conferred to her by Bangladesh’s Nobel peace prize winner Mohammad Yunus at a ceremony held in The Hague. The teen in her award-winning speech stressed on the importance of continuing the fight against climate change and focusing on creating a more sustainable future.
Her speech comes not long after the new President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump revealed his decision of withdrawing the U.S from a global agreement on climate change.
Kolkata Awarded Best Cities Award at C40 Mayors Summit
Kolkata and 10 other cities from across the globe, has been honoured with the Best Cities Of 2016 Award in recognition of its inspiring and innovative programme with regard to solid waste management during the C40 Mayors Summit held in Mexico City from November 30 to December 2, 2016. From India, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai and New Delhi are the members of The International Summit of Mayors of millions plus cities. Kolkata is the only Indian city to receive the prestigious award
La La Land named best film by New York Film Critics Circle
Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling starrer romantic drama La La Land has been chosen as the best film of 2016 by the New York Film Critics Circle. The film, directed by Damien Chazelle, is widely tipped to be an Oscar frontrunner. The top award was the only win for the musical drama where Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight won three trophies each.
Manchester won the best actor award for Casey Affleck, best screenplay for Kenneth Lonergan and best-supporting actress for Michelle Williams, who also was recognised for her work in Certain Women. Barry Jenkins was recognised as the best director for Moonlight, which also won best supporting actor for Mahershala Ali and best cinematography (James Laxton). The best actress trophy went to Isabelle Huppert for her work in both Elle and Things to Come.
Indian contestant Srinidhi Shetty wins Miss Supranational
India’s representative Srinidhi Shetty has been crowned Miss Supranational 2016, an international beauty pageant. This marks the second time that India has won the pageant following the win by AshaBhat in 2014. Srinidhi Shetty qualified for the competition after becoming the first runner-up at the Miss India Universe pageant earlier this year, where she won the title ‘Miss Diva Supranational’.

Donald Trump names General Motors CEO Mary Barra to his advisory panel
US President-elect Donald Trump has named General Motors CEO Mary Barra to his economic and job-creation panel. The panel, set to meet for the first time in February, consists of CEOs from JPMorgan Chase, Walt Disney, Boeing, and other companies. Barra is one of the only two women on the panel, the other being IBM CEO Ginni Rometty.

A mobile application, Stanpan Suraksha, developed by an NGO Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI) to promote breast feeding and check on “inappropriate” promotion of baby food items, was launched by Tribal Affairs Minister JualOram on December 2, 2016 in New Delhi. The App has a feature to enable people report the inappropriate promotion of marketed baby food around them, by enabling them to click pictures of advertisements, displays of such products and send them to an NGO which then may take required legal action.
Women’s Asia Cup T20 Final: IND beat PAK by 17 runs
Mithali Raj’s magnificent unbeaten 73 and a combined bowling effort from Jhulan Goswami, EktaBisht and Preeti Bose helped India win the Women’s Asia Cup T20 title against Pakistan by 17 runs in Bangkok. Thus, they successfully defended the title which they won in 2012 in Guangzhou while they secured their fourth win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup.
Messi, Ronaldo, Griezmann shortlisted for FIFA Best Player
French forward Antoine Griezmann has been shortlisted for the FIFA men’s player of the year award, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Griezmann was Euro 2016’s top-scorer, netting six goals before France lost the final. The 23-player list was shortlisted following votes from national team captains, coaches and select media persons, with the winner to be announced on January 9.
Former MP governor Bhai Mahavir passed away
Former Madhya Pradesh governor Bhai Mahavir passed away in Delhi on December 3, 2016.He was 94. Mahavir has served as the governor of Madhya Pradesh from April 1998 to May 2003. He joined RSS as Pracharak and had also served as the member of the RajyaSabha for two terms.
Renowned Poet and former Rajya Sabha MP Bekal Utsahi passes at 88
Renowned Poet and former Rajya Sabha MP Bekal Utsahi passes at 88i. Veteran poet and former Congress Rajya Sabha MP Bekal Utsahi passed away at Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital on December 3, 2016 at 88. He was admitted in the hospital on December 1 following brain haemmorhage. Utsahi was awarded the Padma shree in 1976 for his contribution to literature. He was also honoured with YashBharti by the UP government.
First Asian-American to win Olympic gold passes away at 96
Two-time Olympic gold medalist diver Sammy Lee died aged 96 on Friday in Newport Beach due to pneumonia. Lee, a Korean-American, became the first ever Asian-American to win an Olympic gold medal for the US after winning gold in the 1948 London Olympics. Lee, also a physician, notably served in the US Army Medical Corps in the Korean War.
