The International Volunteer Day (IVD) is observed across the world on 5 December every year. This year theme is ” Global Applause – give volunteers a hand”. This year’s theme recognises the volunteers worldwide and their efforts in making peace and sustainable development a reality.
World Soil Day5 December: World Soil Day
The World Soil Day (WSD) 2016 was observed on 5 December 2016 at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) headquarters in Rome. The theme for the day is “Soils and pulses, a symbiosis for life.” The theme for the 2016 WSD focuses on the positive contributions of pulses to soil properties, such as fixing the atmosphere nitrogen and improving its biodiversity, fertility and structure.
The observance of World Soil Day aims at connecting people with soils and raising awareness on their critical importance in lives of human beings.On the other hand, 2016 was declared the International Year of Pulses (IYP).
Driven by increased 4G and 3G penetration, India’s internet population is likely to increase from current 343 million users to 600 million by 2020, according to a study by Assocham and Deloitte. India is the world’s second largest mobile phone market with over a billion mobile phone connections. Among these, 240 million mobile connections belong to smartphones.
NITI Aayog will be immediately transferring 5 lakh rupees for every district in the country as seed money to kick start this drive. A letter has been written to district collector, commissioners and magistrates in this regard by NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant, who is also member of the committee to promote cashless payments.
For availing the incentive, the district collector, commissioner or magistrates would have ensure that individuals transiting to digital payment mode should do at least two successful transactions by any of the five methods.These five modes are – Unified Payment Interface (UPI), Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD), Aadhaar Enabled Payments, e-wallets and Rupay debit/credit/prepaid cards.
In Andhra Pradesh eight schools have been selected for establishment of Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATL) an ambitious programme conceived under AtalInnovaiton Mission. Out of 12,000 schools across the country applied for the lab, only 595 schools have been shortlisted for the final selection which is Innovation Challenge.
The Innovation Challenge was conducted at Osmania University, Hyderabad. On the basis of their presentations, 257 schools from India, 8 schools from Andhra Pradesh have been selected for establishing Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATL).
BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta has instructed ward officers to make Mumbai open defecation free by the end of this month. Salman Khan, the face of the campaign, will also extend his support by giving mobile toilets. Of the 118 locations identified as places where open defecation takes place, only 44 locations have been made open defecation free until now.
The Rajasthan government will launch a mobile application on December 13 that intends to reduce the road accidents’ casualties by half by 2020. The app will be integrated with the details of hospitals, police station, ambulance service, emergency services and the user can assess contact details, can seek help or ambulance or report an accident.
World’s largest bird festival organized in Agra to promote Eco-tourism
A three-day bird festival is being organised by the Uttar Pradesh government in Chambal. The festival was inaugurated on Friday by Cabinet Minister Abhishek Mishra. Tim Appleton, who reportedly started the world’s first bird fair in England, was also present during the inauguration. The festival will feature talks by prominent ornithologists and workshops by professional photographers.
The vaccination drive against the Japanese Encephalitis that has so far claimed over hundred children’s lives in Malkangiri district of Odisha began today. Malkangiri district Collector K SudarshanChakravarty, who inaugurated the drive, said a total number of 2 lakh 18 thousand children aged between 1 and 15 years have been identified for the vaccination. The vaccination drive will be carried out for 15 days during which the children would be vaccinated from 8 AM to 3 PM everyday. A total of 175 teams have been formed for this purpose.
Public Financial Management System (PFMS) will help Union Government to save a significant amount on interest costs.
It will allow the government to monitor and access the more than Rs.1 lakh crore of idle funds lying with it under various heads. Once government access these funds through PFMS, it need does not need to borrow that amount. Government is planning to roll out this platform from next financial year i.e. April 2017 along with Goods and Services Tax (GST). It will be integrated with IT network of the GST.
PFMS is an electronic fund tracking mechanism compiles, collates and makes available in real-time, information regarding all government schemes.Beside this, it will significantly provide government real-time information on resource availability and utilisation across schemes. In addition it allow government expenditure to adopt a Just-in- Time (JIT) approach, with payments made only when they are needed.
India recieved over 300 billion US dollar Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) milestone between April 2000 and September 2016. Thirty three per cent of the FDI came through the Mauritius route, apparently because the investors wanted to take advantage of India’s double taxation avoidance treaty with the island nation.
India received 101.76 billion US dollar from Mauritius between April 2000 and September 2016, according to data compiled by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion. The cumulative FDI inflows during the period amounted to 310.26 billion dollar.
The inflows in the first half of the current financial year was 21.62 billion dollar. The other big investors have been from Singapore, the US, UK and the Netherlands. Commenting on the USD 300 billion mark, industry bodies Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce&Industry(FICCI) and CII have said that India is perceived as a safe and dynamic destination by global investors.
FICCI President HarshavardhanNeotia said that they see this trend of increasing inflows further strengthening in the coming years. CII in a statement said, FDI flows have increased significantly and consistently in the last two years and the country would continue to remain as one of the most attractive destinations in the foreseeable future.

E-commerce major Amazon today launched its global startup program ‘Launchpad’ in India, an online portal featuring over 400 products from different startups including 25 Indian startups. The program will also help Indian startups to sell their products overseas. First started in 2015, Amazon Launchpad is now available in seven regions.
KPMG and Microsoft India on Monday announced a strategic Internet of Things (IoT) Advisory partnership to accelerate the digital transformation of large and mid-market enterprises in the country.
The IoT Advisory will help enterprises deploy solutions that can drive Cloud-based automation, generate operational insights through IoT, provide better customer relationship management and analytics, improve organisational agility and increase workforce mobility.
“The IoT Advisory will help define IoT usage scenarios for customers and then implement them for desired business impact,” said Peter Gartenberg, General Manager, Enterprise and Partner Group, Microsoft India, in a statement.
Prime Minister NarendraModi has won the online reader’s poll for TIME Person of the Year. PM Modi beat other world leaders, artists and politicians, as the most influential figure in 2016. According to TIME Magazine, Modi won with 18 % of the vote when the poll closed. TIME Magazine’s Person Of The Year will be announced on December 7 and is selected by TIME Magazine editors.
Eminent Hindi poet LeeladharJagoori would be honoured with the prestigious Gangadhar National Award for the year 2015. The award, carrying a cash prize of Rs 50,000, a shawl and citation would be presented to Jagoori by Sambalpur University in January next year. The prestigious award was instituted by Sambalpur University in 1989. Jagoori will be the 25th recipient of the award.
Actress Rekha was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 22nd edition of Star Screen Awards on Sunday. DeepikaPadukone presented the award to the veteran actress while SonamKapoor paid tribute to her and performed on her songs. Later, Rekha joined Sonam onstage and danced to her song ‘Pardesia’ from the 1979 film ‘Mr. Natwarlal’.
Courtroom drama film ‘Pink’ was named the Best Film at the 22nd edition of annual film awards show Star Screen Awards. The film also won awards for Best Actor, Best Editing and Best Dialogue, bagging four awards in total. Meanwhile, Ram Madhvani won the Best Director award for his biographical film ‘Neerja’.
After Time Magazine put Flipkart Founders – SachinBansal and BinnyBansal – on the list of 100 Most Influential People in the world, the Straits Times of Singapore has chosen them for the prestigious “2016 Asian of the Year” as part of a group called the “The Disruptors.”
“Flipkart’s innovative steps, aimed at transforming commerce in India through technology, have truly disrupted the market and it makes us proud to be recognized for this achievement.We accept this honor on behalf of all Indians,” SachinBansal and BinnyBansal said in a joint statement.

Telecom operator BhartiAirtel announced top level changes by appointing Sunil Taldar as CEO& Director of its DTH arm Airtel Digital TV and moving incumbent ShashiArora as MD& CEO of Airtel Payments Bank.He takes over from ShastriArora who, after a stint of around five years as CEO& DTH, has moved as MD& CEO, Airtel Payments Bank.
New Zealand Prime Minister John Key has announced his resignation. John Phillip Key is the 38th Prime Minister of New Zealand, in office since 2008. His resignation will be effective from 12 December, when National MPs will meet to select a new leader.
Austria’s Norbert Hofer conceded defeat today in his bid to become Europe’s first far-right president, as projections showed he was lagging behind in a bitterly fought election re-run.
Greens-backed independent Alexander Van der Bellen swept 53.3 per cent of the votes against 46.7 per cent for his rival from the anti-immigration Freedom Party, FPOe according to public television projections.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch 83 satellites into space in one go, aboard a single rocket in January 2017.
The launch of these foreign satellites by India is a part of a commercial agreement signed between these countries and Antric Corporation Ltd, which is the commercial arm and Public sector undertaking of ISRO.
The three Indian satellites that are going to be launched include:

Amoung the 83 satellites, 3 belong to India while the other 80, weighing 500 kg belong to five foreign nations including Israel, Netherlands, Kazakhstan, Switzerland and the United States of America.
ISRO to launch remote sensing satellite on Dec 7
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Sunday announced that it is all set to launch PSLV-C36 carrying 1,235 kg remote sensing satellite RESOURCESAT-2A from the spaceport of Sriharikota on December 7. The satellite would carry a high-resolution Linear Imaging Self Scanner camera, medium-resolution LISS-3 camera and an advanced wide field sensor camera that operates in various bands.
In Kerala, the seventh edition of Admiral’s Cup Sailing Regatta, the flagship event of Indian Naval Academy, will kickstart at Ettikulam bay, Ezhimala in Kannur district on Wednesday. Over 50 participants from 26 countries, including hosts India, will take part in the week-long event, competing in 16 races under the category of Olympic Class Laser Radial Sailing Boat, single crew.
India is fielding two teams including INA Ezhimala and National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. The regatta will be officially inaugurated by INA Commandant Vice-Admiral Soonil V. Bhokare tomorrow. The opening ceremony and training sessions will be held tomorrow and from Wednesday, the bay will be open for the competitions.
The Admiral’s Cup will be awarded to the best team winning the championship on the basis of their combined performance. In addition, individual medals will also be awarded. The defending champion is USA and the runners-up is China.
Indian Golfer Mukesh Kumar became the oldest golfer to win an Asian Tour title on December 4, 2016 at Delhi Golf Club (DGC) after winning the Panasonic Open India. The 51-year-old Mukesh, who has won 123 PGTI titles, scored two-under 70 in the final round which made his total to 10-under 206 to claim the trophy.
