    International No Diet Day:

    ·       International No Diet Day (INDD) is an annual celebration of body acceptance, including fat acceptance and body shape diversity on May 6th.
    ·       This day is also dedicated to promoting a healthy life style with a focus on health at any size and in raising awareness of the potential dangers of dieting and the unlikelihood of success.
    Lok Sabha passes the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code Bill 2016:
    ·       The Lok Sabha passed the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code Bill 2016. The bill is being seen as a transformational legislation that will help in improving India’s ranking in the World Bank’s ‘Ease of Doing Business’ index.
    ·       The Bill is based on the recommendations of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2015 chaired by Bhupender Yadav.
    ·       The committee submitted the report to government on 28 April 2016.
    India ratifies trade pact of WTO:
    ·       The Government has ratified the Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) of the WTO and the pact aims to expedite the movement, release and clearance of goods, including goods in transit.
    ·       India has ratified the Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) of the World Trade Agreement (WTO) and the instrument of Acceptance for Trade Facilitation Agreement was handed over to WTO Director-General by India on April 22.
    ·       The pact will come into force once two-thirds of WTO members have completed their domestic rectification process.
    India cigarettes: Court upholds tough rules on packaging:
    ·       India’s Supreme Court has upheld new federal rules which require tobacco firms to put bigger pictorial health warnings on cigarette packets.
    ·       The court rejected the tobacco industry’s arguments that the rules were impractical to implement.
    ·       The government wants tobacco firms to cover 80% of a cigarette pack’s surface with pictorial warnings, up from 20%.
    ·       India has about 110 million smokers and the government says smoking kills nearly a million people every year.
    DRDO and Ayush Join Hands to Impart Yoga Training to Defence Wing Staff:
    ·       Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS) a Delhi based premier laboratory of DRDO in collaboration with Department of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) organised a training program on Yoga for the Defence Wing Staff during 25th to 30th April 2016.
    ·       The training programme was in collaboration with HQ of Integrated Defence Services, DCIDS (Medical), Ministry of Defence and Central Council for Research in Yoga& Naturopathy (CCRYN) under AYUSH.
    ·       DIPAS has also designed customized yoga packages for Air Force, Navy, high altitude, hot deserts, and Low Intensity Conflicts (LIC) environments.
    Wi-Fi Service at Vijayawada, Kachiguda, Raipur rail stations :
    ·       Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has launched the Google’s free Wi-Fi service facility through video conferencing from Rail Bhawan in New Delhi.
    ·       Expanding the high speed Internet network facility, this Wi-Fi service at Vijayawada (in Andhra Pradesh), Kachiguda (in Hyderabad) and Raipur (in Chhattisgarh) stations.
    ·       Earlier, Wi-Fi service was launched at Bhubaneswar station.
    ·       This Wi- Fi service is designed to offer passengers the best internet experience, Wi-Fi will be available to any user who has a smartphone.
    ·       Under the ‘Digital India initiative’, Railways is committed to provide better internet facilities to the passengers at 100 busiest stations by the end of this year.
    Indian Railways creates Non-Fare Revenue Directorate to explore advertising in train coaches:
    ·       Indian Railways (IR) announced the creation of Non-Fare Revenue Directorate to carry out advertisements in rail coaches, along the track and near stations.
    ·       The decision to create a directorate was taken to increase the revenue substantially from non-tariff sources
    CAIPEEX a process to understand Rain Formation in Clouds& impact of Randomized Cloud Seeding:
    ·       CAPEEX: Cloud Aerosol Interaction and Precipitation Enhancement Experiment
    ·       CAIPEEX, a technique to understand the rain formation in clouds and the impact of Randomized Cloud Seeding, was in news in May 2016. The term CAIPEEX was used in Parliament by Minister of State for Science& Technology and Earth Sciences, YS Chowdary.
    ·       In Lok Sabha on 4 May 2016, the minister informed that the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) is putting its effort in understanding the rain formation in clouds through this research program.
    Odisha govt to dig one lakh deep bore wells for farmers:

    ·       The Odisha government has decided to dig one lakh deep bore wells to ensure that the farmers of the drought-hit areas are able to save their crops at the time of drought.
    ·       A decision to this effect was taken at the Cabinet meeting presided over byChief Minister Naveen Patnaik at the state Secretariat.

    BSNL beats private telcos in growth rate in February:

    ·       BSNL has registered the highest growth rate in providing new wireless connections during February this year, beating all private operators.
    ·       BSNL has a growth rate of 1.67 %, followed by Bharti Airtel with 1.18 %, Vodafone with 1.04 % and Idea Cellular with 0.85 % whereas the industry average stood at 0.85%.
    ·       State-run BSNL added 13.93 lakh subscribers to increase its base to 8.48 crore.

    Lok Sabha passes Finance Bill 2016:
    ·       The Finance Bill, 2016 has been passed in the Lok Sabha.
    ·       Speaking on the bill, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has reiterated to push in more capital into banks. He has ruled outwithdrawal of one per cent excise duty on gold.
    H R Nagendra Committee on Yoga Education in Universities submitted its recommendations:

    ·       The Union Government announced that the H.R. Nagendra Committee on Yoga Education in Universities has recommended seven programmes for implementation in universities.
    ·       The Union Government had constituted a committee on yoga education in universities.
    ·       The committee was headed byProfessor H.R. Nagendra, Chancellor, Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana, Samsthana, Bengaluru.
    ·       The committee had submitted its report on 19 April 2016.
    Offshore patrol vessel ICGS Shaurya launched:
    ·       Goa-based defence shipyard, Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), launched Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Shaurya at Vasco.
    ·       The is the fifth ship of a series of six off-shore patrol vessels  (OPVs) that the Indian Coast Guard had tasked the Vasco defence public sector undertaking to build.
    ·       This 105-metre new generation OPV that was launched by the Governor of Goa, Mridula Sinha will be delivered to the Coast Guard after sea trials are completed.
    ·       The ICGS Shaurya will be commissioned into service in early 2017.
    Zimbabwe to print own version of US dollar :

    ·       Zimbabwe is set to print its own version of the US dollar in order to ease a cash shortage in the country.
    ·       The cash, known as bond notes, will be backed by 200 million dollars support from the Africa Export-Import Bank.
    ·       The specially-designed two, five, 10 and 20 dollar notes will have the same value as their US dollar equivalents.
    ·       Zimbabwe introduced the US dollar after ditching its own currency in 2009 following sustained hyperinflation.
    ·       Since then Zimbabweans have been using the dollar as well as a number of other foreign currencies including the South African rand and the Chinese yuan.
    Alberta Wildfire: State of Emergency declared by Canada Government:
    ·       Alberta: A province in Western Canada that encompasses mountains, prairies, desert badlands and vast coniferous forests.
    ·       Alberta, a province in Western Canada, came in news in the first week of May 2016. It came into news on 5 May 2016 after a state of emergency was declared in the city of Fort McMurray due to a massive wildfire destroyed several of homes.
    ·       Fort McMurray is the hub of the province’s main oil sands region.
    India to pay Iran $6.4 bn via European banks:

    ·       India and Iran reached an agreement for the former to pay Iran $6.4 billion in pending oil payments using European banks, India’s Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said.
    ·       Oil buyers could not pay Iran owing to the sanctions, which were recently lifted.
    ·       Indian refiners were holding 55% of the payments pending to Iran and were depositing 45% with India’s UCO bank.
    First sex-themed park to open in Brazil:
    ·       Brazil is set to get the world’s first strictly adults-only sex-themed amusement park.
    ·       The park, scheduled to open in 2017 in South Brazil’s Piracicaba, will be called ‘Erotikaland’ and will feature phallus-shaped bumper cars, nudist pools, naked water slides, a movie theater with vibrating seats among other things. Entry to the park will be priced at $100 per head.
    Dr. Radha Binod Barman Nominated as Chairperson of the National Statistical Commission:

    ·       Dr. Radha Binod Barman, an eminent statistician, has taken over as the part-time Chairperson in the National Statistical Commission. Prof. S. Mahendra Dev, Prof. Rahul Mukherjee, Dr. Rajiv Mehta and Dr. Manoj Panda are the other part-time Members in the Commission.
    ·       The Chief Executive Officer, NITI Aayog is the ex-officio Member in the Commission. The Commission is an advisory body on all statistical matters, set up to enhance public trust in official statistics.
    Kumar Rajesh Chandra appointed Chief of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security:
    ·       Senior IPS officer Kumar Rajesh Chandra was appointed the Chief of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS).
    ·       The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the name of Chandra for appointment to the post of Director General (formerly known as Commissioner of Security (Civil Aviation) in the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security.
    Sudhir Yadav appointed Tihar DG:

    ·       Sudhir Yadav, the 1985 batch IPS officer of the Delhi police, was appointed as the new Director General (DG) of Tihar.
    ·       Earlier, he served as Special Commissioner of the Delhi police.
    SBI launches new mobile-based payment app for customers:
    ·       The country’s largest bank State Bank of India has now launched ‘mVisa‘ ,a mobile-based payments solution.
    ·       The service will enable customers to make payments from their smartphones, by simply scanning the unique merchant Quick Response (QR) code, at merchant outlets.
    ·       “mVisa” is a card-less solution which facilitates payment by scanning the QR code displayed at the merchant outlet or from the merchants mobile.
    ·       The new technology eliminates the need to swipe the physical card at a point-of-sale machine.
    ·       SBI customers will have to download the latest version of SBI Anywhere application and register for mVisa payments to enable the service.
    ·       In its first phase, mVisa service has been launched in Bangalore and will be expanded to other cities gradually.
    ICICI Bank in strategic tie-up with NDB:

    ·       ICICI Bank signed a MoU to establish a strategic partnership with the New Development Bank (NDB), a multilateral development bank established by the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) nations.
    ·       The two banks will consider each other as “preferred” partners and will harness their respective resource advantages and professional expertise to build a long-term, stable and mutually-beneficial relationship in the areas of bond issuances, co-financing, treasury management and human resources.
    ·       ICICI Bank is the first Indian bank to sign an MoU with NDB.
    Gravitational wave scientists win Special Breakthrough Prize:

    ·       The scientists and engineers of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, who detected gravitational waves and reported their discovery in February, have been awarded a $3 million Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics.
    ·       The prize will be shared between two groups of laureates: the three founders of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), who will each equally share $1 million; and 1,012 contributors to the experiment, who will each equally share $2 million.
    ·       Founded by a group of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, the Breakthrough Prizes recognize the world’s top scientists in life sciences, fundamental physics, and mathematics.
    Angélique Kidjo wins human Right Awards:
    ·       Musician Angélique Kidjo and three African youth activist movements have been given Ambassador of Conscience Award 2016.
    ·       Kidjo and groups Y’en a marre, le Balai Citoyen and Lutte pour le changement have shown exceptional courage.
    ·       The Award is Amnesty International’s most prestigious human rights award.
    ·       It is given to individuals who show exceptional leadership to protect and promote human rights.
    President Pranab Mukherjee confers Niryat Shree and Niryat Bandhu Awards:

    ·       President Pranab Mukherjee conferred the 15th set of Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) Niryat Shree and Niryat Bandhu Awards in New Delhi.
    ·       The awards were presented at the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO).
    ·       The awards were conferred to the companies from various sectors of exports besides service providers, banks, and various facilitating agencies which are promoting exports during the year 2015-16.

    ü Reliance Industry was adjudged as the top foreign exchange earner and leading exporter of last 50 years.
    ü TCS bagged the Gold Award in IT services. Exporters from engineering, chemicals, textiles, agro and processed sector, etc. were also given Gold/Silver/Bronze awards.
    ü State Bank of India got the Gold award followed by Canara Bank and Punjab National Bank are among the supporting institutions.

    Indian Parashar Kulkarni wins 2016 Commonwealth Short Story Prize for Asia Region:

    ·       Indian Parashar Kulkarni in the first week of May 2016 won the Commonwealth Short Story Prize for 2016, for the Asia region.
    ·       He was awarded for his politically grounded unpublished short fiction ‘Cow and Company’.
    ·       He will receive a cash prize of 2500 pounds (3835 US dollars).
    ·       The story ‘Cow and Company’ narrates the story of four men in search of a cow. The story manages to keep the reader engaged through twists and turns show the connections between culture and commercial interests.
    ·       Parashar Kulkarni is an assistant professor in Social Sciences at Yale NUS College Singapore.

    He is one of the five winners of 2016 Commonwealth Short Story Prize. Winners from other four regions are:
    ü Faraaz Mahomed – ‘The Pigeon’ with its playful tone and unreliable narrator

    ü Lance Dowrich – comedic ‘Ethelbert and the Free Cheese’

    India rated 9th in FDI Confidence Index:

    ·       India has secured ninth position in the 2016 Foreign Direct Investment Confidence Index.
    ·       The ranking has been released by a global management consulting firm named AT Kearney.
    ·       The firm has underlined that the country is “finally” embarking on a growth path that will see it “unlock its full potential”. India jumped two places to rank number 9 in this year’s AT Kearney Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Confidence Index.
    ·       India has emerged as the fastest growing economy in the world, surpassing China as well as Brazil, Russia and South Africa, the other members of BRICS.
    ·       The US and China hold top two positions for fourth straight year. Canada ranked at third position. Germany secured fourth position. The UK, Japan, Australia and France secured the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth position respectively. Singapore secured the tenth position.
    NSE to launch new exchange for MSME :
    ·       The National Stock Exchange (NSE) is all set to launch a new trade receivable and credit exchange platform for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
    ·       This new exchange will help MSMEs to file their bill against large companies, which can be accepted electronically and auctioned so that these small enterprises are paid immediately.
    ·       The new exchange platform will be a joint venture of NSE and Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) and could be the first specialized exchange for micro SMEs.
    ·       The platform would be known as ‘Trades Exchange‘ as it’ will be based on the Trade Receivables Discounting System (TReDS).
    ·       The new platform will be operational by the end of this year.
    USFDA approves Aurobindo Pharma cholesterol drug:

    ·       Aurobindo Pharma has received final approval from the US Food& Drug Administration (USFDA) to manufacture and market Fenofibrate tablets, used for the treatment of high levels of cholesterol, in the American market. The drug has an estimated market size of $412 million for the 12 months ended March 2016, the company said, quoting US-based healthcare information provider IMS Health.
    Snapdeal acquires TargetingMantra:
    ·       E-commerce marketplace Snapdeal on Thursday acquired Gurgaon-based predictive marketing technology startup TargetingMantra for an undisclosed amount. Founded by Saurabh Nangia and Rahul Singh in March 2013, it helps manage customer life cycle through personalization, targeting and big data analytics.
    ·       In 2014, TargetingMantra raised $1.1 million in seed funding led by 500 Startups, and others.
    Twitter launches first APAC business leadership summit in India:

    ·       Twitter launched its first business leadership summit in Asia, #TwitterUdaan, in Gurgaon, bringing together close to 200 industry leaders over presentations and panel discussions on the theme #FutureForward.

    Gmail, Yahoo data among ‘hundreds of millions’ of hacked accounts on sale for $1:
    ·       Hundreds of millions of hacked usernames and passwords for email accounts and other websites are being traded in Russia’s criminal underworld, a security expert told Reuters.
    ·       The discovery of 272.3 million stolen accounts included a majority of users of Mail.ru, Russia’s most popular email service, and smaller fractions of Google, Yahoo and Microsoft email users, said Alex Holden, founder and chief information security officer of Hold Security.
    Google partners Idea for direct carrier billing:

    ·       Google entered into a partnership with telecommunications major Idea Cellular to offer direct carrier billing in India.
    ·       Idea users would now be able to make purchases on Google Play Store directly through their postpaid and prepaid accounts.
    ·       Costs for the same will be charged through monthly bills and phone balance respectively.
    NASSCOM inks MoU with Facebook to develop a product design initiative:
    ·       National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) signed a partnership agreement with Facebook to build a product design initiative in India.
    ·       The agreement focus on assisting the innovation ecosystem by helping product based companies to build solutions in key sectors where technology can play a transformational role.
    Rohit Sharma unveils India’s first sports expo:

    ·       Indian batsman Rohit Sharma inaugurated India’s first sports expo in Pune.
    ·       The Pune International Sports Expo, which is scheduled to run until May 8, will showcase various products and modern technologies for fitness and sports by Indian and multinational brands.
    ·       The expo will also feature talks by sportspersons including Zaheer Khan, Sunil Chettri and Milkha Singh among others.
    Mark Boucher named KKR wicket-keeping consultant:
    ·       Retired South African gloveman, Mark Boucher is all set to join the Kolkata Knight Riders as their new wicket-keeping consultant.
    ·       Boucher joins a coaching team that has the likes of Jacques Kallis, Simon Katich, WV Raman and Wasim Akram. The 39-year-old had played for the Kolkata Knight Riders during the 2011 season.

    ·       Delhi’s Amoj Jacob scripted a memorable win in the men’s 800m beating favourite Beant Singh by 0.18 seconds as the 14th junior Federation Cup National athletics championship drew to a close at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium.
    ·       In 200m, Karnataka’s M. Kiran clocked 21.62s to claim gold in the boys’ section while Subha of Tamil Nadu came first in the girls’ section in 24.83s.
    Srikanth slips to World No. 12, Jwala-Ashwini rises to 14th:
    ·       Olympic-bound men’s singles shuttler K Srikanth of India slipped a place to be ranked World No. 12 in the latest BWF rankings issued.
    ·       2010 Commonwealth Games champion duo of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa, who made the cut for their second Olympics, raised one rung to be World No. 14 in women’s doubles.
