QUESTION:
A certain amount was to be distributed among A, B, C in the ratio 2:3:4 respectively but was erroneously distributed in the ratio 7:2:5 respectively. As a result of this, B got Rs.40 less. What is the total amount?
GIVEN:
Correct ratio = 2:3:4
Wrong ratio = 7:2:5
Difference between the share of B with respect to the correct and wrong ratios = Rs.40
SOLUTION:
NORMAL METHOD
Let the total amount,A = Rs. Y
According to the correct ratio2:3:4, the shares received by A, B, C are as follows
A = [2Y/ (2+3+4)] = [2Y/9]
B = [3Y/9] = [Y/3]
C = [4Y/9]
Whereas, as per the wrong ratio7:2:5, the shares of A, B, C are as follows
A = [7Y/ (7+2+5)] = [7Y/14] = [Y/2]
B = [2Y/14] = [Y/7]
C = [5Y/14]
Now the difference between the shares received by B = Rs.40
Rs.40 = B’s share by correct ratio – B’s share by wrong ratio
Rs. 40 = [Y/3] – [Y/7]
Rs.40 = [(7Y – 3Y) / 21]
40 = [4Y/21]
4Y = 840
Therefore Y = [840/4] =Rs. 210
SHORTCUT METHOD:
In the total amount Rs. Y
B’s correct share is [3/9] part = [1/3]
B’s wrongly calculated share is [2/14] part = [1/7]
Difference between the shares = Rs.40
[1/3] – [1/7] = 40
[(7-3)/21] = 40
[4/21] = 40
4 partà 840
1 partà ?
Therefore, 1 part i.e., Y = [840/4] =Rs.210
