World Wetlands Day:

  • World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on 2 February.
  • It marks the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlandsin 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar.
  • The Standing Committee of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands approved the theme for World Wetlands Day in 2018 as “Wetlands for a Sustainable Urban Future”.

Cochin Shipyard Limited Signs MoU With Russian Firm USC

  • Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and Joint Stock Company United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC), Russia have signed an MoU to collaborate and engage in Design, Development and Execution of contemporary, State-of-Art vessels for Inland and Coastal Waterways.
  • The MoU will give a push to the Government’s Make-in-India programme, as also its plans to develop eco-friendly and economic transportation along India’s inland waterways and coastal shipping routes under SAGARMALA.

Union Government allocated Amounts for women safety:

  • In the Union Budget 2018 Finance minister Arun Jaitley has been sanctioned Rs. 100 crore for Nirbhaya Fund to the safety of women.
  • 81.75 crore has been allocated for the National Emergency Response System and prevention of cybercrimes against women and children.

Govt makes PAN mandatory for all transactions over Rs.2.5 lakh:

  • The government has made Permanent Account Number (PAN) mandatory for those entity conducting financial transactions of RS.5 lakh or more.
  • Adding that an Aadhaar-like identity number is being developed for enterprises, the government stated that PAN will also be used as a Unique Entity Number for non-individuals from April 1.

Canada has modified its national anthem to make it gender-neutral:

  • Canada’s Upper House of Parliament has passed a bill to modify the country’s national anthem in a bid to make it gender-neutral.
  • The words “thy sons command” in the second line of the anthem will be replaced with “all of us command”.

Bhutan becomes second country to open consulate in Guwahati:

  • Bhutan became the second country after Bangladesh to open a consulate in Guwahati, the principal city of a state trying to shake off the militancy tag.
  • Bhutan has already had a consulate in Kolkata for years.

UAE Launches World’s Longest Zip Line:

  • The United Arab Emirates has made a record by opening the world’s longest zip line, measuring 2.83 km in length. Guinness World Records officials certified the zip line in Ras al-Khaimah.
  • The Jebel Jais Flight takes thrill-seekers atop the country’s largest mountain peak, from a launch pad 1,680 meters (5,512 feet) above sea level.

Rwanda Becomes 1st Poor Country To Provide Eye Care For All:

  • Rwanda has become the first low-income country to provide universal eye care for its 12 million populations.
  • The government has partnered with the organisation Vision for a Nation (VFAN) to train more than 3,000 eye care nurses based in 502 local health centres, prescribing glasses and referring those with serious eye problems to national clinics.

The 32nd Surajkund International Crafts Mela has begun , Haryana:

  • The 32nd Surajkund International Crafts Mela has begun in Faridabad, Haryana.
  • The Mela is organized by the Surajkund Mela Authority and Haryana Tourism in collaboration with Union Ministries of Tourism, Textiles, Culture and External Affairs.
  • The 17-day cultural extravaganza will see a spectacular showcase of regional and international crafts, handlooms, traditions along with some mouth-watering multi-cuisine food for the visitors. This year Uttar Pradesh is the theme state and Kyrgyzstan is the Partner Nation.

CURRENT AFFAIRS: MOU AND AGREEMENT

India has joined Ashgabat Agreement:

  • India has joined Ashgabat Agreement on the establishment of an International Transport and Transit Corridor between the Iran, Oman, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
  • The agreement was signed in 2011, which envisages facilitation of transit and transportation of goods between Central Asia and the Persian Gulf.
  • According to the External Affairs Ministry, the accession to the Agreement would diversify India’s connectivity options with Central Asia and have a positive influence on its trade and commercial ties with the region.

Neelam Kapur Appointed Director General  Of Sports Authority Of India:

  • Indian Information Service (IIS) officer Neelam Kapur was appointed Director-General of Sports Authority of India (SAI).
  • She is at present the Principal Director General of the Directorate of Field Publicity (DFP). It is for the first time that an IIS officer has been appointed as SAI chief. The post is usually held by an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer.

Alibaba invests $146 million in BigBasket:

  • A unit of China’s Alibaba has invested $146 million in Indian online grocer BigBasket, strengthening its position in the country’s online retail space and potentially posing a challenge to its U.S. rival Amazon.com.
  • Online grocery sales are fast becoming popular in India, with BigBasket, Softbank-backed rival Grofers and Amazon’s India unit vying for a bigger piece of the market.

  • The 7th India Energy Congress was held in New Delhi.

Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) has received Rs.173.06 crore for capital infusion from the government:

  • In a regulatory filing, IOB said it has received 173.06 crore as contribution of the central government in the preferential allotment of equity shares of the bank as government’s investment during the 2017-18 fiscal.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written a book for students who are battling stress and anxiety during the examination season. The cover photo of the book was released on February 3rd

India Open Boxing: Mary Kom Clinches Gold:

  • The five-time World Champion MC Mary Kom claimed the gold medal in the India Open International Boxing tournament at Thyagraj Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.
  • She defeated Josie Gabuco from the Philippines in a split 4-1 decision to grab the gold in the women’s 48kg weight category.
