    NATIONAL AFFAIRS:

    1. India on track to register entire population using Aadhaar:

    ·        India is on track to register its entire 1.25 billion populations using its Aadhaar digital ID, the World Bank, which it said, would help the government to promote the inclusion of disadvantaged groups in its welfare schemes.
    ·        The report said that while the internet, mobile phones and other digital technologies are spreading rapidly throughout the developing world, the anticipated digital dividends of higher growth, more jobs, and better public services have fallen short of expectations, and 60 per cent of the world’s population remains excluded from the ever-expanding digital economy.
    2. Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana: Crop insurance plan to entail Rs 8.8K cr outgo
    ·        The Union Cabinet approved the launch ofPradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (Prime Minister Crop Insurance Scheme)in which the premium rates to be paid by the farmers have been brought down substantially so as to enable more farmers avail insurance cover against crop loss on account of natural calamities. The scheme will come into effect from the upcoming kharif season.
    ·        Under the new scheme, farmers will haveto pay a uniform premium of two per cent for all kharif crops and 1.5 per cent for all rabi crops. For annual commercial and horticultural crops, farmers will have to pay a premium of 5 per cent.
    3. India to get a boost in its Ocean energy Quest:

    ·        The Cabinet gave its approval to India’s membership of theInternational Energy Agency-Ocean Energy Systems.
    ·        The membership would give India access to advanced R&D technologies and facilitate harnessing of ocean renewable energy resources.
    ·        It will also facilitate development of technologies like desalination through“International Cooperation and Information Exchange”.
    4. RGIA to run on solar energy in 3 years:
    ·        In the next three years, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) will become self-sufficient when it comes to energy.
    ·        The GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. (GHIAL) witnessed inauguration of its 5 MW solar power plant. The company’s CEOS.G.K. Kishoresaid the airport’s solar capacity would be upped to 30 Mega Watts (MW) in the next three years to meet all energy requirements.
    ·        In 2016-17 alone, the airport is expected to raise the solar capacity up to 12 MW. The installed power plant which has 16,000 modules of solar panels will meet 30 per cent of the airport’s requirements.
    5. IT industry fears dent in margins as US notifies H-1B, L-1 visa fee hike
    ·        On the back of a hike in H-1B and L-1 visa fees, the Indian IT industry is concerned about more surprises that lie ahead such as higher visa rejections, which can have a direct impact on margins.
    ·        The US notified that an additional fee up to $4,000 will be applicable for certain categories of H-1B and L-1 visas. Further, the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) said companies that have applied for certain categories of H-1B visas post December 18, 2015, will have to dole out an additional $4,000.
    6. Mid-tier chain Ibis opens second hotel in Chennai
    ·        The mid-tier hotel chain Ibis, a joint venture betweenFrench hospitality chain Accor Hotels and InterGlobe Hotels, will launch five hotels in the next three months, and has plans to open four more by 2017.
    ·        The five hotels will be launched in Goa, Kochi, Coimbatore, Hyderabad and Delhi. The group is looking at Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Pune for the next stage of development. The 19 hotels have a cumulative investment of ₹2,000 crore.
    7. Sugar cess ceiling hiked to Rs 200/qtl after Prez nod to Bill:
    ·        PresidentPranab Mukherjee has given his assent to the Sugar Cess (Amendment) Bill, 2015, raising the ceiling of the impost from Rs 25 to Rs 200 per quintal, a measure that will help sugarcane growers and cash-starved mills.
    ·        Presidential assent to the bill, which will help the government meet its expenditure on interventions to ensure payment of dues to the sugarcane farmers, was granted on January 8.
    8. BSNL starts 4G service with soft launch in Chandigarh

    ·        State-ownedBSNL started 4G services on non-commercial basis in Chandigarhpromising broadband speed of up to 100 megabit per second (Mbps).
    ·        The company’s local ads are promising broadband speed of up to 100 mbps on its Long Term Evolution (LTE) based 4G mobile service.
    ·        BSNL has 4G spectrums across India except in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kolkata.
    9. Union Cabinet approved MoU between India and Maldives for co-operation in health sector:
    ·        The Union Cabinet, presided by thePrime Minister Narendra Modi gave its ex-post facto approval for the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) betweenIndia and Maldives on co-operation in the field of health
    ·        The MoU was signed in January 2014 and it will especially assist Maldives to develop ofhuman resources and facilities for healthcare. The enhanced cooperation in the health field will increase relations between the two countries to greater extent
    ·         Apart from the co-operation in the Health field, they have also signed to extend Manpower requirements of theIndira Gandhi Memorial Hospital and for allotment of plot to the High Commission of Maldives in India
    10. Jharkhand to add drinking water crisis in local disasters list:
    ·        Jharkhand government decided to add the ongoing crisis of drinking water in the list of special local disasters of the State.
    ·        The decision was taken in a Cabinet meeting and will cover those districts where the rainfalls have been less than 75 percent of the normal or where the groundwater level has gone below by four meters or more.
    11. Gadkari inaugurated 2nd Liquid Chemical Berth of Mumbai Port Trust:
    ·        Union Shipping MinisterNitin Gadkari inaugurated Mumbai Port Trust’s second liquid chemical berth atPir Pau, Mumbai.
    ·        With commissioning of this berth, the cargo handling capacity of the Port will increase by 2.5 MMT (Million Metric Tonnes) per annum.
    About Second Liquid Chemical Berth
    • The project is built at an expense of127 crore rupees.
    • It is designed to handle 55000 DWT (deadweight Tonnes) vessels carrying liquid bulk chemicals and POL products, which can be upgraded to 65000 DWT in future.
    • The safety standards provided at this facility are conforming to the Oil Industry Safety Directorate (OISD) norms.
    12. Jharkhand to set up fast track courts for trial of witchcraft-related attacks:
    ·        For speedy trial of cases relating to witchcraft incidents, theJharkhand Government decided to set upfast track courts in five districts. As per an official release, the courts will be formed in Ranchi, Chaibasa, Khunti, Palamau and Simdega districts.
    ·        The decision was taken during a cabinet meet chaired by Chief MinisterRaghubar Das. The decision is based on the reports of witchcraft-related attacks in some rural areas of the state. As per the reports, around 40 to 50 women, on an average, are branded as witches and killed in Jharkhand.
    13. GOI Formed Arvind Panagariya committee on Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Corridor:
    ·        Union Government formed a 5 member high level committee to monitor the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Corridor(bullet Train Project) will be headed by the NITI Aayog Vice Chairman-Arvind Panagariya
    ·        The mandate of the committee is to look into the overall operations and technical issues,Make in India component and financial outlay of90000 Crore Project
    14. Sikkim becomes India’s First Fully Organic state:

    ·        Sikkim has become India’s first fully organic state by converting around 75,000 hectares of agricultural land into sustainable cultivation.
    ·        Sikkim Organic Mission’s executive director Dr Anbalagan.
    ·        It was 12 years ago in 2003 when thePawan Chamling-led governmentdecided to make Sikkim an organic farming state through a declaration in the legislative assembly.
    ·        Sustainable farming will also help in building the soil health resulting in sustainable increased crop production, he said. Besides it will also boost the tourism industry in the tiny landlocked Himalayan state.
    INTERNATIONAL:
    15. WHO declares LIBERIA ebola-free:

    ·        The World Health Organisation has declared Liberia ebola-free, marking the end of the world’s worst outbreak. The end of active transmission has been declared as 42 days have passed without a new case being reported.
    ·        Liberia has been declared ebola free twice before, although infection has re-emerged. MeanwhileUN Chief BAN KI MOON has warned of flare ups in West Africa
    SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:

    16.PSLV C31 launch on January 20

    ·        The Indian space scientists are expected to launch the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle C-31 from the Satish Dhawan Space Center (SDSC) at Sriharikota here on January 20. This is aimed at putting the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System 1E satellite into a geo-synchronous orbit.
    ·        The initial launch preparations have been started with the scientists likely to announce the launch date officially once the weather forecasts are found favorable for the mission.
    ·        The IRNSS 1E is the fifth satellite in the navigation constellation with its objective being to provide navigation, tracking and mapping services in the region.

    17. LV, UNICEF award BECKHAM for Humanitarian Work:
    ·        Luxury label Louis Vuitton (LV) in partnership with United Nations Children’s Fund awarded theHumanitarian Leadership prize to footballer David Beckhamin Los Angeles.
    ·        The award was to honour Beckham’s Contribution for raising $2.5million for the children body’s programmes
    18. Subhashini Vasanth honored with Neerja Bhanot Award:

    ·        Bengaluru-based activistSubhashini Vasanth was honored with Neerja Bhanot Award. She was presented the award for her Endeavour to help people in distress and for empowering widows of martyrs and their families across the country.
    ·        Bollywood actorSonam Kapoor presented the award to Vasanth at a ceremony held in Chandigarh.
    About her:
    ·         Subhashini Vasanth lost her husband Col Vasanth V, who was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra in 2008 for his selfless, supreme sacrifice while fighting terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir.
    ·        She started theVasantharatna Foundationin memory of her husband. The foundation provides education scholarships, conducted empowerment programmes and outbound learning programmes for women and children.

    19. WWE India appointment:

    ·        WWE has announced the appointment ofJoji George as Vice-President and General Manager, WWE India.
    ·        George’s appointment precedes the return ofWWE live events to New Delhi on January 15 and 16, and follows the launch of WWE Network last November.

    20. Sania-Martina smashes world record as they win 29th match on the trot

    ·        India’s Sania Mirza and her Swiss partner Martina Hingison Thursday broke a 22-year-old world record by winning their 29th women’s doubles match in a row en route to their entry into the women’s doubles final of the WTA Sydney International.
    ·        The World No 1 pair came from behind to beat the pair of Romanian Raluca Olaru and Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova 4-6 6-3 10-8 in a closely-fought semi-final.
    ·        They now surpassed the pair of Puerto Rican Gigi Fernandez and Belarus’ Natasha Zvereva, who won 28 matches on the trot during their successful pairing back in 1994.
    21. FIFA dismissed Secretary General Jerome Valcke:
    ·        Frenchman Valcke was provisionally suspended from football for his alleged involvement in a scheme to profit from the sale of World Cup tickets.
    ·        FIFA said thatMarkus Kattner will continue to serve as acting Secretary General, FIFA Ethics Committee chaired byHans-Joachim Eckert.
    22. Ronaldinho named ambassador of Indian Tournament:
    ·        Brazilian Football Legend,Ronaldinho has been named as the ambassador of theNagjee International Club Football tournament to be played inKozhikode, Kerala

    23. SBI Launches Wealth Management Service, ‘Start-ups Branch’:

    ·        State Bank of India on Thursday became the first public sector lender to launch wealth management service, a space dominated by private and foreign players, to cater to fast-growing affluent segment of the country.
    ·        The bank also inaugurateda dedicated branch for start-ups which will provide advisory services to the budding entrepreneurs.
    ·        The wealth management offering – ‘SBI Exclusif’ and the start-up branch –‘SBI InCube’ was rolled out in Bengaluru on Thursday.
    ·        ‘SBI Exclusif’will offer many firsts in wealth banking like the first ‘e-Wealth Center’ that can deliver quality relationship management services remotely for extended hours. Its customers will be able to transact and invest on digital channels such as internet and mobile. The customers will have access to a dedicated relationship manager to take care of all their banking and investment needs.
    ·        Through the ‘SBI InCube’, the bank will be helping, guiding and counseling the new entrepreneurs in starting a new company or business enterprise, which so far was not available in the banking industry.
    OBITUARIES:
    24. Former JD(S) State president Vadivelu dead
    ·        Former president of the Tamil Nadu unit of Janata Dal (secular)G.A. Vadiveludied of illness. He was 92.
    ·        Born in Golahalli in 1925, Vadivelu had briefly worked as revenue inspector under the British rule before joining the freedom movement.
    ·        He later moved away from the Indian National Congress and became a follower of socialist leader Jayaprakash Narayan and joined the Janata Party in 1977.
    25. 1971 India-Pakistan war veteran Lt Gen JFR Jacob passes away at 93
    ·        Lt Gen JFR Jacob (retd), who played a key role in the 1971 war which broke up Pakistan and created Bangladesh, died in New Delhi.
    ·        Born in the Bengal Presidency under British India, Jacob joined the army at the age of 19 and also fought in World War II and the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965 before he retired in 1978.
    ·        Jacob was the Chief of Staff of the Indian Army’s Eastern Command during the 1971 India-Pakistan war that led to Pakistan’s eastern wing seceding and becoming an independent Bangladesh.
    ·        Jacob also served as the governor of Goa and Punjab
      
    26. Veteran stage actor Brian Bedford passed away:

    ·        Acclaimed stage actor Brian Bedford passed away due to cancer on 13 January 2016 in Santa Barbara, California, the USA. He was 80.

    ·        Bedford, who won a Tony Award on his first of seven nominations, appeared on the stage and in film, and is known for both acting in and directing Shakespeare.
