    NATIONAL AFFAIRS:
    1. Union Government sanctioned 33000 crore rupees for Infrastructure Projects in Tamilnadu:

    ·         Union Government sanctioned 33000 crore for the development  of infrastructure projects in Tamilnadu
    ·        Union Road Transport, Highways, Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkariannounced the sanctioned amount and at his discretion, he announced additional 17000 crore rupees. With thistotal amount sanctioned was raised to 50000 crore rupees

    2. Andhra Pradesh Government reconstituted the Commission for Backward Classes:
    ·        Andhra Pradesh Government reconstituted the Commission for Backward Classes with immediate effect.
    ·        AP Commission for Backward Classes (APCBC) will be a two member commission withJustice KL Manjunath, (Retd.) as its chairman and Member Secretary, APCBC as the other member.
    ·        The Chairman of APCBC shall hold office for a term of three years from the date of assumption of office.
    ·        The Commission was not constituted since,24 September 2011, when the previous commission term expired.

    3. Ministry of Shipping initiated Project Green Port to make Indian ports cleaner and greener:

    ·        The Union Ministry of Shipping on 19 January 2016 startedProject Green Ports, which will help in making the Major Ports across India cleaner and greener.
    ·        Project Green Ports will have two verticals:
    1.   Green Ports Initiatives
    2.    Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan
    Features of Green Port Initiatives
    It includes twelve initiatives which will be implemented under strict time bound fashion in order to achieve the targets.
    Some of these initiatives are:
    Preparation and monitoring plan
    Acquiring equipments required for monitoring environmental pollution
    Acquiring dust suppression system
    Setting up of sewage/waste water treatment plants/ garbage disposal plant
    Setting up projects for energy generation from renewable energy sources
    Completion of shortfalls of Oil Spill Response (OSR) facilities (Tier-1)
    Prohibition of disposal of almost all kind of garbage at sea, improving the quality of harbor wastes etc.
    Features of Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan
    The Ministry has identified 20 activities with certain time-line to promote cleanliness at the port premises.
    Some of the activities include:
    Cleaning the wharf
    Cleaning and repairing of sheds
    Cleaning and repairing of port roads
    Painting road signs, zebra crossing, pavement edges
    Modernizing and cleanliness of all the toilet complexes in the operational area
    Placement of dustbins at regular intervals
    Beautification and cleaning of parks
    Putting boards indicating cleanliness messages
    Cleaning and repairing of all drainages and storm water systems
    Tree plantation
    ·        In order to achieve these objectives, regular training will be provided to the staff in order to generate awareness and inculcate a positive attitude towards keeping the environment clean and green.

    4. Renew Power commissioned 40 MW wind project in Karnataka:

    ·        Clean energy firm Renew Power Venturesannounced the commissioning of 40 megawatt wind power project in Karnataka.
    ·        With this, the total wind capacity commissioned by Renew Power has reached693 megawattsand in Karnataka, it raised to 68.4 megawatts from earlier 28.4 megawatts.
    ·        It commissioned first of its kind wind project atBhesada, Rajasthan.
    ·        It installed tallestHybrid Towers in India for the first time with 30 meters higher than conventional towers.
    ·        A lattice / tubular tower combination of 120 meters height from S97 series of Suzlon has been set up on-shore (at Nani Ber district of Kutch, Gujarat) in the world for the first time.

    5. 35% reservation for Women in govt jobs in Bihar:
    ·         Bihar CMNitish Kumar approved 35% reservation for women in state government jobs in all categories.
    ·        The reservation that was earlier extended for the post of women police constables will now be extended to other vacancies

    6. India, UK to cooperate in infra financing:

    ·        India and the UK agreed to strengthen economic cooperation in various fields including infrastructure financing, addressing issues of cross border tax evation and avoidance.
    ·        Opening up of the Indian legal sector to foreign lawyers also addressed.
    ·        The agreement came as a part of a dialogue betweenFinance Minister Arun Jaitleyandhis UK counterpart George Osborne

    7. India slips to 89th rank in global talent competitiveness:

    ·        Reflecting an acute shortage of skilled labour force and difficult business conditions,India has slipped 11 places to rank 89th on a global index of talent competitiveness, a list which has been topped by Switzerland.
    ·        Switzerland is followed by Singapore, Luxembourg, the US and Denmark in the top five positions on the annual Global Talent Competitiveness Index (GTC)released by INSEAD business school in partnership with Adecco Group and the Human Capital Leadership Institute of Singapore.
    ·        Last year, India was ranked 78th on the index that measures a nation’s competitiveness based on the quality of talent it can produce, attract and retain.

    8. India’s Mukesh Ambani, Azim Premji& two others among world’s 62 super-rich:

    ·        The wealth of the world’s 62 richest individuals is half of the rest of the world. Among those affluent 62 are four Indian names:Industrialist Mukesh Ambani, IT titan Azim Premji, pharma boss Dilip Shanghvi and business magnates, Hinduja Brothers.
    ·        Oxfam, which published the report, also noted that “in India, 46 percent of billionaires have made their fortunes from sectors that depend upon market power, influence or preferential access to licensing”. The report also draws comparisons between CEO pay across different countries and the average workforce. For instance, in India, “The CEO of a top information technology firm makes 416 times the salary of a typical employee.”

    BANKING, BUSINESS AND ECONOMY:
    9. YES Bank formalizes $500-m green bond plan:

    ·        Private sectorYES Bank looks to open a branch in the UK later this year, as part of plans to extend its international reach.
    ·        The initial focus would be on institutional banking, but longer term the bank hopes to expand UK operations into retail banking too,CEO Rana Kapoor said during a visit to London to formalize a previously agreed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the LSE for the listing of a $500-million green bond, and global depository receipts.
    ·        Alongside the $500-million bond issue, YES Bank is also considering the listing of global depository receipts in London, as part of $1 billion of equity capital raising plans.

    10. IMF retains India growth forecast at 7.5% for 2016-17:
    ·        The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has retained India’s growth projection at 7.3 per cent in the current fiscal and 7.5 per cent for the next, even as it cut world economic outlook to 3.4 per cent for 2016.
    ·         “India and the rest of emerging Asia are generally projected to continue growing at a robust pace, with some countries facing strong headwinds from China’s economic rebalancing and global manufacturing weakness” .

    11. RBI to inject liquidity of Rs 10,000 cr via OMOs:

    ·        The Reserve Bank will purchase government securities for a total Rs 10,000 crore to inject liquidity into the market.
    ·        “Based on the current assessment of prevailing and evolving liquidity conditions, the Reserve Bank has decided to conduct purchase of Government securities under Open Market Operations (OMO) for an aggregate amount of 100 billion on January 20, 2016,”.
    ·        As part of the OMO, RBI will purchase government securities maturing in 2019 (bearing interest rate of 7.28 per cent), 2023 (8.83 per cent), 2025 (7.72 per cent) and 2030 (7.88 per cent).

    12. Microsoft buys custom version of Minecraft game:
    ·         Microsoft announced the acquisition of a modified third party version of the building block game Minecraft, called MinecraftEdu, which is designed for classrooms.
    ·        With this acquisition Microsoft plans to launch a classroom edition of Minecraft called ‘ Minecraft: Education Edition’

    13. Rupee hits 28 month low of 68.05 against dollar:

    ·        The Indian rupee tumbled 30 paise to trade over 28 month low at 68.05 against the US dollar.
    ·        Analysts attributed the fall to strong demand for the dollar from importers and banks amid a lower opening in the domestic equity market

    14. China to inject $91 billion into the money markets:
    ·         Amid growing concerns about China’s economic growth rate, the country’s central bank,the people’s bank of china injected over $91.22 billion into the money markets.
    ·        This comes after China reported its weakest economic growth in 25 years for 2015. Further, the central bank also injected $3.6 billion into its banking system

    15. CIL to spend 200 crore on technical overhaul:

    ·         State owned Coal India Limited (CIL) will spend 200 crore onits initial technical upgrade under which all its trucks will be fitted with GPS devices along with enabling electric fencing of its mines, Coal Secretary Anil Swarup announced

    16. Cairn to seek $600 million from India in Damages:
    ·        UK based oil firm Cairn Energysaid that it will seek over $600 million from the Indian Government for losses it incurred owing to the 10247 crore tax demand levied by the Income Tax Department in 2014.
    ·        The company added that it has initiated an arbitration challenging the tax levied under theUK-India Investment Agreement.

    17. Phone Maker Xiaomi ventures into film Production:

    ·         Chinese Smartphone maker Xiaomi, in partnership with media group Huayi Brothers Star, ventured into its first film production Project.
    ·        Under this Xiaomi will focus on the aspects of screenwriting and development of talent.

    18. Amazon to deliver groceries by April 2016:
    ·         Online Marketplace Amazon India will reportedly foray into the grocery delivery service market before April this year.
    ·        The company has partnered with several retailers for the same and aims at delivering groceries within 2 hours of receiving orders.
    ·        Amazon had soft launched ‘Kirana Now’, its quick delivery platform of consumer need products, last march in select locations in Bengaluru

    19. Ratan Tata invests in cashback website CashKaro:
    ·        Ratan Tata, the chairman Emeritus of Tata sons, has invested an undisclosed sum in Gurgaon based cashback and coupons website CashKaro.com. This is Ratan Tata’s third investment of 2016.
    ·        Founded in 2013 by Swati and Rohan Bhargava, the startup raised about $3.7 million in series A funding led by Kalaan Capital in November last year

    20. L&T bags 3k crore order for building Ganga Bridge:

    ·         Engineering and Construction majorLarsen& Tourbo said its joint venture firm withDaewoo E&C of South Korea has bagged 3115 crore order for construction of a new Ganga Bridge inBihar.

    21. Solar Power Tariff hits new low at rs 4.34/unit:
    ·        The Tariff for grid connected solar power in the bidding under the National Solar Mission hit the lowest ever price of 4.34 per unit.
    ·        The bidding was conducted by the state run NTPC for 420 MW capacity at theBhadla solar park in Rajasthan.
    ·        Finland’s Fortum Finnsurya Energy bagged the contract for setting up a 70 MW plant at the lowest tariff

    SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:
    22. Microsoft donates cloud computing ‘worth $1 billion’:

    ·        Microsoft said it will put a billion dollars’ worth of cloud computing power in the hands of non-profit groups and university researchers free of charge.
    ·        A philanthropic arm of the US software colossus will make the donation during the coming three years to 70,000 non-profit groups and researchers,chief executive Satya Nadella.
    ·        Cloud computing lets people use the Internet to tap into processing or data storage capacity at huge data centers.

    23. ISRO’s PSLV-C31 places IRNSS-1E satellite in orbit:
    ·        India in the company of select nations which have their own navigation systems, theIndian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)successfully placed in orbit IRNSS-1E, the fifth of the seven satellites that would form a constellation of navigation satellite network.
    ·        PSLV-C31 (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) carrying 1,425kgIRNSS-1E (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System) lifted off fromthe second launch pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. This was PSLV’s 33rd flight. As in the previous four launches, ISRO used an XL version of the rocket.

    24. NASSCOM launches startup warehouse in Hyderabad:

    ·         NASSCOM, in partnership with the Telengana government, inaugurated the ‘ T-Hub NASSCOM startup Warehouse’ in Hyderabad.
    ·        A Startup warehouse is an incubator and co-working space for entrepreneurs, available for 6-12 months at a reasonable cost, during which startups can pitch to investors.
    ·        NASSCOM already has startup Warehouse in Bangalore, Kolkata, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Kochi and Gurgaon.

    SPORTS:
    25. Indian Driver Jehan Daruvala won Lady Wigram Trophy motor race:

    ·        Sahara Force India Academy racerJehan Daruvalaon won one of New Zealand’s most prestigious events, the Lady Wigram Trophy.
    ·        It was Daruvala’s maiden victory in Formula cars since making the switch from karting in 2015.
    ·        In August 2015, Daruvala won Rookie of the Year at the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC series championships in the Netherlands.
    About Lady Wigram Trophy
    ·        The Lady Wigram Trophy is a New Zealand motorsport race trophy formerly awarded to the winner of the Wigram Airfield race.
    ·        It made up part of the Tasman Series and classes like Formula Holden, Formula 5000, Formula Pacific and Formula Three.
    ·        Formula 1 greats like Jackie Stewart, Jack Brabham, Stirling Moss, Jim Clark and Bruce McLaren were all former winners of the Lady Wigram Trophy.

    26. Australian Open:  Paes Knocked out; Bhupathi progresses:
    ·         Seventeen time grandslam winner Leander Paes crashed out of the Australian Open men’s doubles first round game whileMahesh Bhupathi won his doubles game.
    ·        Paes and Jeremy Chardy lost 3-6, 4-6 in straight sets to Colombian duo Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah. Mahesh Bhupathi paired with Gilles Muller defeated Andrew Whittington and Alex Bolt 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.

    OBITUARIES:
    27. Veteran Journalist Aroon Tikekar passed away:

    ·         Senior Journalist and scholar Aroon Tikekar passed away in Mumbai. He was 72.
    ·        Tikekar who has written over 20 books, passed away due to breathing related complications.

    28. Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Daulatrao Aher died:

    ·        Former Maharashtra health minister and Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dr Daulatrao Aher died following prolonged illness in Nashik. He was 74.
    About Dr Daulatrao Aher
    • He was an ENT surgeon, hailing from Devla taluka of Nashiki in Maharastra.
    • He was a member of the 13th Lok Sabha of India from Nashik constituency in 1989-1991 and was elected MLA from Nashik for three terms — 1985-90, 1995-99 and 1999-2004.
    • He served as the state health minister from 1995-99 in the then Shiv Sena-BJP coalition government.
    • He was the chairman of Nashik’s leading educational institute Maratha Vidya Prasarak Samaj and associated with several other social organizations’.
