    NATIONAL AFFAIRS:
    1). Union Cabinet approved MoU between India and UK on cooperation in governance reforms:

    ·         The Union cabinet gave its ex post facto approval for the MoU between India and United Kingdom on co operation in governance reforms.
    2). ISRO, Kuwait Institute signed MoU on cooperation in space exploration:

    ·        The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Kuwait Institute signed a MoU on cooperation in the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes.
    3). CCEA approved setting up of over 5000 MW of Grid connected solar PV Power Projects:
    ·        The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) gave its approval for setting up over 5000MW of grid connected solar PV Power Projects on build, own and operate basis.
    ·        The work will be implemented by Solar Power Developers (SPDs) with viability gap funding under Batch-IV of Phase II of theJawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM). The total investments expected under the scheme is about 30000 crore rupees.
    4). Union Government granted Infrastructure status to Shipyard Industry:
    ·        The Union Government granted Infrastructure status to Shipyard Industry in a bid to ease its financial stress.
    ·        With the granting of the infrastructure status, the shipyards will be able to avail flexible long-term funding at lower costs
    5). CCEA approved six laning of NH-2 in Bihar and Jharkhand:
    ·         The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) gave its approved development of the Six laning of Aurangabad-Bihar/Jharkhand Border-BarwaAdda section on National Highway-2 in Bihar and Jharkhand
    ·        The estimated cost of the project is 4918.48 crore rupeesincluding cost of land acquisition, resettlement and rehabilitation and other pre-construction activities.
    6). Union cabinet approved policy on Promotion of City Compost:
    ·        The Union cabinet chaired by the PM Narendra Modi approvedPolicy on Promotion of City Compost.
    ·        The Policy primarily seeks to promote the use of city compost by bringing better coordination among various government departments and agencies.

    Benefits of compost:

    • Compost from city garbage would not only provide carbon and primary/secondary nutrients to soil but also help in keeping the city clean.
    • Composting can reduce the volume of waste to landfill/dumpsite by converting the waste into useful by-products.
    • This also prevents production of harmful greenhouse gases (especially methane) and toxic material that pollutes groundwater apart from polluting the environment.
    • City waste composting would also generate employment in urban areas.
    7). Union Cabinet approved amendments in Power Tariff Policy:
    ·        The Union cabinet approved amendments in power tariff policy to ensure 24*7 affordable power for all.
    ·        The amendment aim at promoting clean energy, better regulation of discoms and faster rollout of investments. The amendments are also aimed at the objectives ofUJWAL DISCOM ASSURANCE YOJANA (UDAY)with the focus on4 E’s: Electricity for all, Efficiency to ensure affordable tariffs, Environment for a sustainable future, Ease of doing business to attract investments and ensure financial viability
    8). Maharashtra first state to give maternity leave in Surrogacy:

    ·        Maharashtra became the first state to grant female government employees 180 days maternity leave while having a baby through surrogacy.
    ·        The employees would need to apply for the leave in advance and furnish all the necessary certificates to concerned authorities.
    9). Union Government, World Bank signed financing agreement for Bihar Kosi Basin Development Project:
    ·        Union Government, World Bank signed financing agreement for Bihar Kosi Basin Development Projectof 250 million US Dollars.
    ·         It was signed byRaj Kumar, joint secretary, Department of Economic Affairs ,andOnno Ruhl, Country Director in India, World Bank
    10). PM Narendra Modi released book titled the Z Factor written by Subhash Chandra:

    ·        The PM Narendra Modi released a book in New Delhi.
    ·        The book is the autobiography of the promoter of Essel/Zee group Subhash Chandra
    APPOINTMENTS:
    11). Ravi Chellam took charge as Executive Director of Greenpeace India:

    ·        Noted Environmentalist Ravi Chellam took charge as Executive Director of Greenpeace India, a NGO.
    ·         He Succeeds former Executive Director Samit Aich, who had resigned following an internal review.
    BUSINESS AND ECONOMY:
    12). FDI to India almost doubled in 2015: UNCTAD
    ·         Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)to India nearly doubled in 2015, while the USA emerged as the top source of FDI, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)
    13). India’s 1st LGBT run radio cabs to run in Mumbai:
    ·        India’s first LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) radio cab service ‘Wings Rainbow’was announcedin Mumbai.
    ·        The Initiative offering employment opportunities to the LGBT community was launched by tour services operator ‘Wings travels’ and city based NGO ‘Humsafar Trust’.
    ·        The operation of the cab service will begin in 2017 as the drivers are undergoing training currently.
    14) .General Motors acquires tech&assets of Sidecar:
    ·        US based automaker General Motors acquired the technology and most of the assets ofdefunct ride-hailing service Sidecar.
    ·         As a part of the deal, GM will get co founder and CTO Jahan Khannaalong with 20 employees. GM also invested over $500 million in Lyft last year to prepare for future competition from companies like Uber
    15). Mobikwik to help water bill payments in Delhi:
    ·        Online payment startup Mobikwik announced a tie up withDelhi Jal Board that will facilitate people in Delhi to pay water bills using their mobiles through the Mobikwik interface.
    ·        Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal will officially launch the Delhi Jal Board app after which the service will be functional. Mobikwik has also partnered with IRCTC recently.
    16). R-Com pays 5383 crore liberalization fee to DoT:
    ·         Anil Ambani led Reliance Communications (R-com) said that it has paid an amount of 5383 crore to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) as liberalization fee pertaining to the 800/850 MHz spectrum held in 16 circles.
    17). Former Twitter CEO to Co Found Fitness startup:
    ·        Former Twitter chief Dick Costolo revealed on Twitter that he’s cofounding a new fitness startup withBryan Oki, former CEO and co founder of another fitness focused platform calledFitify.
    ·        He also announced that he is joining a venture capital firm called ‘Index Venture’ as a partner.
    18). Flipkart holds 47% of m-commerce traffic:
    ·        E-Commerce CompanyFlipkartaccounts for 47% of the mobile ecommerce traffic in India.
    ·        Lifestyle e-tailer Myntra,a subsidiary of flipkart is second in the list with a 16% share followed byAmazon (15.86%) and Snapdeal (13.84%). Further Flipkart also registered with thehighest android app installs in India with a share of 37%
    BANKING:
    19). Investments to come once markets Stabilize: Rajan
    ·        RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan said that once the markets stabilise people will invest in emerging markets like India.
    ·        Calling the Rupee” relatively strong” in the emerging markets currency basket he said India is facing the same problems as other world markets.
    20). Axis Bank profit raises 14.5% to2175 crores:

    ·         Private lenderAxis Bank posted a profit of 2175 crore for the quarter ended December, registering a 14.5% year on year rise in profits.
    ·        However NPA as percentage of total loans rose to 1.68% compared to 1.38% in the previous quarter.
    21). SEBI released report of Narayan Murthy panel on Alternative Investment Policy:
    ·         The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) released the first report of theAlternative investment policy advisory committee (AIPAC) for comments from the stakeholders.
    ·        The 21 member committee was constituted by the SEBI under the chairmanship ofN R Narayan Murthy, co founder of Infosys to suggest measures for development of the alternative investment funds (AIFs) and startup eco system in the country.

    SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY:

    22). New tree Frog genus discovered in forests of North-Eastern India:

    ·        Professor Sathyabhama Das Biju, popularly known as“Frogman of India”and his team of researchers discovered a new genus of tree hole breeding frogs in the forests of India’s Northeast and china.
    ·        The Genus has been namedFrankixalus after Professor Franky Bossuytt for his contribution to amphibian research
    23). 2015 is Earth’s warmest year since 1880: NOAA
    ·         The globally averaged temperature over land and ocean surfaces for 2015 was the highest among all years since modern record keeping began in 1880.
    ·        It was revealed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration after an independent analysis.
    24). Smart Sensor for allergy, asthma alerts unveiled:
    ·        US based company AlerSense unveiled a smart sensor that acts as an early warning system for asthma and allergy alerts.
    ·        The Product can take accurate readings of the surrounding environment and can tell the users to remove themselves from that area.
    ·        The product can measure airborne contamination and toxins such as pollen, mold, and dust among others.
    SPORTS NEWS:
    25). Female Indian Football referee qualified by FIFA:

    ·         Rupa Devi qualified to officiate international football matches conducted by FIFA.
    ·        The 24 year old referee from Dindigul, Tamilnadu, is a teacher at the Madurai Kamaraj University, where she used to play football for the college team.
    ·        She has refereeing the experience at state and national level matches as well as at the AFC Under-14 Football Festival in 2013.
    26). Uttar Pradesh won Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy:
    ·         Uttar Pradesh won its maiden Mushtaq Ali Trophy with a 38 run win over two time champions Baroda in the final played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai
    OBITUARIES:
    27). Classical dancer Mrinalini Sarabhai passes away:

    ·         Veteran classical dancer and Padma Bhushan awardee Mrinalini Sarabhai, wife of scientist Vikram Sarabhai passed away in a hospital in Ahmedabad at the age of 97.

    ·         She was trained in Bharatnatyam, Kathakali and Mohiniyattom and was a poet, writer and Environmentalist
