    1). Gujarat High Court stayed the implementation of the compulsory voting in the panchayat and municipal polls under the provision ofGujarat Local Authorities Laws (Amendment) Act 2009
    ·        The verdict was given by the Gujarat HC Bench consisting of Acting Chief JusticeJayant Patel and JusticeJ.B. Pardiwala onpublic interest litigation(PIL)challenging the constitutional validity of the Act
    ·        Gujarat –1st state in India to make voting compulsory in local polls
    ·        Gujarat GovernorO.P.Kohil gave assent toGujarat Local Authorities Laws Bill, 2009in November 2014
    ·        This Bill empowered theState Election Commission to declare an absent voter as defaulter
    ·        Gujarat State Government also had framed rules for implementation of this Act

    2).A team of researchers led byProf. Rene Anand fromOhio State Universityhave successfully grown areplica of a human brain in a laboratory dish
    ·        The success of this research will act as an essential tool in the testing of new drugs and research in the brain disorders including Alzheimers
    ·        The laboratory developed brain is called‘Organoid’ was created by reprogramming skin cells
    ·        The research team has transformed adult skin cells by altering their genes intoInduced Pluripotent Stem (IPS) cells
    ·        This artificially grown brain also contains support and immune cells
    ·        The IPS cells were wheedled into developing different cell types and signaling circuitry of the brain

    ·        Chengalikodan banana is known for its unique shape, size, color and taste
    ·        It was initially cultivated in Kerala’sChengazhikode asChengazhikodan banana which was later changed into Chengalikodan banana
    ·        Presently it is grown in the following panchayats inThrissur district of Kerala
    a)   Chowannur
    b)   Pazhayannur
    c)   Wadakkanchery
    d)   Puzhakkal
    e)   Ollukkara
    ·        The GI status is a status given to products having a uniquegeographical origin and evolution over centuries
    ·        These products have special quality or reputation attributable to its geographical origin
    ·        GI is governed by theGeographical Indications of goods(Registration and Protection) Act, 1999
    ·        Darjeeling tea1stagricultural product in India to be accorded by GI
    ·        There are nearly200 unique products registered as GIs in India. Some of them are as follows
    a)   Vazhakkulam pineapple
    b)   Central Travancore jaggery
    c)   Pokkali rice
    d)   Palakkadan matta rice
    e)   Wayanadan scented rice
