    NATIONAL:
    1). Bandhan Bank became the1st micro-finance company in India to operate as a full-fledged scheduledcommercial bank
    ·        Previously Bandhan bank wasworld’s largest Non-Deposit-accepting Microfinance Institution(MFI) andIndia’s largest microfinance company
    ·        In2001 Bandhan bank was initially established as a not-for-profit micro-finance enterprise byChandra Shekhar Ghosh to a alleviate poverty by empowering women
    ·        In2006 it was transformed into aNon-Banking Finance Company(NBFC)
    ·        It had received approval from RBI to start its operation as a commercial bank inApril 2014
    ·        The bank was inaugurated by the Union Finance MinisterArun Jaitleyin Kolkata
    ·        Bandhan bank will primarily provide services to the unbanked population of India especially daily wage earners and women running small businesses
    ·        Presently, it provides products and services across24 statesthrough
    a)   501 branches
    b)   2022 service centers
    c)   50 ATMs
    ·        71%of its branches are in rural India including35% in unbanked rural pockets
    ·        This 71% branches are distributed across the following states
    a)   West Bengal –220
    b)   Bihar –67
    c)   Assam –60
    d)   Maharashtra –21
    e)   Uttar Pradesh –20
    f)    Tripura –20
    g) Jharkhand –15
    ·        Bandhan Bank headquarters inKolkata has two divisions namely
    a)   Micro banking
    b)   General banking

    2). Gujarat is to become the1st state in India to launchAgro-Solar Policy encouraging the farmers to tap the solar energy
    ·        The project under this policy will be implemented by theGujarat Energy Research and Management Institute(GERMI)
    ·        This policy aims at encouraging the farmers in Gujarat to tap free solar energy from sun which can be used for their own consumption process and sell the remaining energy to the state’spower generation companies to earn additional income
    ·        This will benefit both the farmers and the power generation companies
    ·        The power generation companies will set upSolar Photo Voltaic(SPV)plants in the agricultural fields to generate power without disturbing the agricultural production
    ·        Thepower generation companies that have already set up their SPV plants in farm fields on an experimental basis are as follows
    a)   Gujarat Industries Power Company Limited(GIPCL)
    b)   Gujarat Power Corporation Limited(GPCL)
    c)   Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited(GSECL)
    ·        These SPV plants have already been tested in different agricultural universities and will be set up on poles in the fields so that the farmers can also grow their crops
    ·        The power generating companies will give30% – 40% share from its profit to the farmers
    ·        Other successful solar projects implemented by Gujarat are as follows
    a)   It hasAsia’s largest solar power plant in Charanka village in Patan district built on 2000 hectare land
    b)   In January 2015 UN Secretary GeneralBan-Ki Moon inaugurated the1st canal-top solar power plantwith10 MW capacity on Narmada Canal in Vadodara

    3).World’s number two Tennis playerRoger Federer from Switzerland won theCincinnati Masters title inMen’s Singles category
    ·        Cincinnati Masters Title – is theoldest tennis tournament in United States played in Cincinnati  since1899
    ·        It is the2nd largest summer tennis event after theUS open in United States
    ·        Roger Federer won this title in men’s single category for theseventh timethus creating arecord. He had won this title previously in the following years

    ·        With this win he retained his 100 meter title won by him in2009
    ·        He covered the 100m in9.79 seconds winning thegold medal
    ·        United StatesJustin Gatlin won thesilver medal finishing the 100m race in9.8 seconds

    a)   Usain Bolt is the1st athlete to hold both 100m and 200m world record
    b)   He is thefastest person in the world

    5).Syrian woman journalistZaina Erhaimwon the prestigiousPeter Mackler Awards2015 for Courageous and Ethical Journalism
    ·        Peter Mackler Award
    a)   It was established in 2008 in the memory of late Agence France-Presse(AFP) journalistPeter Mackler
    b)   This award is given by the AFP, Global Media Forums and Journalist training Consortium comprising of Reporters Without Borders
    ·        Zaina Erhaim was bestowed with this award for her efforts to train citizen reporters in the war-ravaged Syrian country
    ·        She has trained over100 citizen reporters of whomone-third are women from Syria over the last2 years
    ·        She also helped in establishing new, independent newspapers and magazines in Syria
    ·        She will be presented the award in a ceremony held at theNational Press Club in Washington inOctober 2015
