    NATIONAL AFFAIRS:
    1. Govt. mobilizes 900 kg of gold under monetization scheme:
    ·        The government said it had netted a hefty 900 kg of idle household and temple gold under the monetization scheme and is hopeful that the number would rise further in future.
    ·        The Gold Monetization Scheme, which had not picked up initially, was fine-tuned to make it more attractive and convenient to encourage entities holding idle gold to participate in the scheme.
    ·        Under the monetization scheme, launched on November 5, banks were authorizedto collect gold for up to 15 years to auction them off or lend to jewelers from time to time.

    2. Andhra Pradesh govt to introduce `priest at your doorstep’:
    ·        The AP endowments department has decided to introduce a novel scheme,“Bhaktuni Chentaku Bhagvantudu” (God visiting the devotee), from the Telugu new year Ugadi.
    ·        As part of the programme, the priest of the local temple will visit families to bless them on seven special occasions related to birth and marriage. In case of death, the priest from the local Shiva temple will visit the family concerned. This is a free service”.

    3. Union Defense Minister unfurls India’s largest and tallest Tricolor in Ranchi
    ·        Union Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar hoisted India’s tallest and largest Tricolor atop the famous Pahari Mandir in Ranchi on the occasion of 119th birth anniversary of freedom fighter Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
    ·        The Pahari Mandir is one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites in Jharkhand. The Tricolor is 66 feet in height, 99 feet in width and it is hoisted on a 293 feet tall pole.

    4. French president Francois Hollande arrived in India today for Republic Day visit:
    ·        French President Francois Hollande will arrive in India hoping to seal a drawn-out defence deal between the two countries as well as hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on global security.
    ·        Hollande will be chief guest at Republic Day parade as part of his three-day visit, after accepting an invitation that is viewed as one of the biggest honours New Delhi can bestow on a foreign leader.

    5. Railways eye e-commerce to shore up freight revenue:
    ·        Indian Railways, the world’s fourth largest network, is looking to cash in on India’s booming $4 billion e-commerce industry to boost revenue from its freight operation
    ·        More than 65 per cent of the earnings of Indian Railways come from freight and around 25 per cent from passengers.

    6. India, Bahrain to strengthen ties in trade, counter-terror:
    ·        India and Bahrain have vowed to strengthen their ties in key areas like trade and counter- terrorismbesides signing an agreement on the transfer of sentenced persons as External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj held “wide-ranging” talks with her Bahraini counterpart her
    ·        Ms. Swaraj, who is here for a two-day visit to attend the first ministerial meeting of the India-Arab League Cooperation Forum, held “wide-ranging” discussions withBahrain’s Foreign Minister Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa yesterday.

    7. AP Government launched Giriputrika Kalyana Pathakam Scheme for tribal people:
    ·        The Andhra Pradesh Government launched Giriputrika Kalyana Pathakam Schemeto support the tribal women in their quest for livelihood.
    ·        The scheme was launched by Andhra Pradesh Minister for Social WelfareRavela Kishore Babu
    Highlights of the scheme:
    • The scheme seeks to reduce rampant infant mortality and child marriages among tribal people. 
    • It is designed to provide a onetime financial assistance of 50000 rupees to each tribal woman who gets married. 
    • The amount will be directly disbursed to the bank accounts of the beneficiary through District Tribal Welfare Office. 
    • To avail the benefits of this scheme, each beneficiary would have to fulfil some mandatory conditions like submission of marriage certificate, income certificate, etc.
    • The scheme is envisaged to provide nutritional food to infants till the age of seven years.

    8. India submitted its first Biennial Update Report to UNFCCC:

    ·        India submitted its first Biennial Update Report (BUR) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Biennial Update Report (BUR) was prepared by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change under its NATCOM project funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF) through UNDP.
    ·        BUR contains national Green Houses Gases (GHG) inventory of India for the year 2010, prepared in accordance with the guidelines of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The inventory covers six greenhouse gases which are Carbon dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), Nitrous Oxide (N2O), Hydro fluorocarbons (HFCs), Per fluorocarbons (PFCs) and Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6)

    9. Defence forces barred from buying Jammers in revised Jammer policy:
    ·        According to this revised Jammer policy Defense forces has been barred from buying electronic jammers.Government of India has excluded the Defense forcesfrom the list of institutions which are allowed to procure or use jammers. Now, the list includes bodies such as state police forces, jail authorities and central agencies likeIB and RAW.
    ·        The last Jammer policy was issued in July 2015. Except excluding Defense forces from the list, everything else is same in the revised Jammer Policy in comparison to the Jammer policy released in 2015. The decision to exclude Defense forces out of the list of authorized agencies who can buy electronic jammers was made considering thatIndian Army’s Technical Support Division (TSD) is no more in function. The jammers in Defense forces were majorly used byIndian Army’s Technical Support Division (TSD).

    10. Centre frames policy for publications division:

    ·        With an objective to make the business methods in line with the present day trends in the publication industry, theInformation& Broadcasting has framed a new policy for the publications division.
    ·        Under  this policy, that supports online readership,readers can avail 25% discount for the digital version of a publication. It also promotes the sale of the divisions e-books.

    11. Karnataka Assembly met the most in 2015: LS Speaker:
    ·        Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajanpraised the Karnataka State Assembly for holding the highest number of sittings as compared to the other states in 2015,followed by Bihar and Tamil Nadu.
    ·        Addressing the All-India Presiding Officers Conference she said that the legislative bodies should meet at least 60 days in a year to strengthen the democratic system.

    12. Punjab government launches employment drive for Youth:

    ·        The Punjab Government has launched the state’s biggest employment drive with an offer of 1,13,766 government jobs to its youth within a year.
    ·        The Youth would be encouraged to take private jobs as well.

    13. Swaraj to attend 1st India-Arab ministerial Meet:
    ·        External Affairs minister Sushma Swarajleft India to attend the first ministerial meet of the India-Arab League Cooperation Forum in Bahrain, wherein issues like terrorism and regional security are expected to be discussed.
    ·        During her 2 day visit to Manama, she is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with Foreign Ministers of numerous other countries.

    14. TRAI to decide on net neutrality by January end:

    ·        The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will come out with its final stand on the issue of differential pricing of data services by January end.

    15. Government asks Oil firms to boost ties with Africa:
    ·        The Central government has askedoil firms in India to boost ties with oil producing African nations to take advantage of the falling crude oil prices and create reserve stock for future demand.
    ·        Notably India has doubled oil imports from Nigeria for 2016-17 while African nations of Sudan and Equatorial guinea have offered tie ups with Indian Government for Oil Exploration.

    16. Hopeful of road projects worth 7lakh crore by FY19:

    ·        Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkarisaid that government is hopeful of completing road projects worth 7 lakh crore by the end of FY19,against the earlier set target of 5 lakh crore.
    ·        He added that the country at present has 96000 km of national highways, which the ministry wants to expand 1,50,000 km over this period.

    17. Hollande to inaugurate Interim secretariat of ISA:
    ·        Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Francois Hollande will on Monday jointly inaugurate the interim secretariat of theInternational Solar Alliance (ISA), an initiative launched by both the leaders at the Climate Change summit in Paris.
    ·        Mr. Hollande, will also lay the foundation stone of the headquarters of ISA, which is aimed at increasing utilization and promotion of solar energy in solar-rich nations.
    ·        The event will be held at theNational Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) in Gurgaon.

    18. Cabinet clears President’s rule in Arunachal Pradesh:

    ·        The union cabinet on Sunday recommended imposition of President’s Rule in Arunachal Pradesh, informed sources here said.
    ·        Governor Jyoti Prasad Rajkhowaby his December 9, 2015, message had advanced the date of the convening of the assembly session. The move was criticized by the Congress and party leader Kapil Sibal had said the governor could not have acted on a resolution by the opposition BJP legislators and two independents

    19. Amit Shah re-elected BJP president:
    ·        BJP chief Amit Shah became the party President again today. Top party leaders led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a bevy of Union ministers and chief ministers of BJP-ruled states proposed his name for the party president’s post during the nomination process.
    ·        Among others who have proposed Mr. Shah’s name are Union minister Rajnath Singh, Anant Kumar and J.P. Nadda, M. Venkaiah Naidu, besides BJP chief ministers Vasundhara Raje, Raghubar Das, Shivraj Singh Chauhan and others.
    ·        BJP Parliamentary Board is scheduled to meet on January 28 evening to welcome Mr. Shah into his new term.

    INTERNATIONAL:
    20. Nepal amends four month old constitution:

    ·        Aiming to put an end to the protests by the Madhesi Community,Nepal passed the first amendment to its maiden democratic constitution.
    ·        Three articles of the 4 month old constitution have been amended

    21. UNESCAP released World Economic Situation and Prospects 2016 report:
    ·        The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) released World Economic Situation and Prospects (WESP) 2015 report. The report highlights that the world economy stumbled in 2015 and only a modest improvement is projected for 2016/17.
    ·        India will be the fastest growing big economy in the world in 2016. The report has projected India’s growth rate at 7.3 percent in the year 2016 and 7.5 percent in 2017, which is slightly up from an earlier estimated 7.2 percent rate in 2015.

    BUSINESS AND ECONOMY:
    22. Google to pay $185 m back taxes to U.K:

    ·        Google has agreed to pay 130 million pounds ($185 million) in back taxes to Britain, prompting criticism from opposition lawmakers and campaigners who said the “derisory” figure smacked of a “sweetheart deal”.
    ·        Google, now part of Alphabet Inc, has been under pressure in recent years over its practice of channeling most profits from European clients through Ireland to Bermuda, where it pays no tax on them.

    23. Ola launches social ride-sharing platform in Chennai:
    ·        Cab aggregator Ola announced the launch of Ola Share, its social ride-sharing platform in Chennai.
    ·        Users who travel on the same routes can now use this service to share their cab rides with other users from social groups.
    ·        Ola Share has been designed to enable people to share cab rides, and it makes for economical fares, since a ride can now be shared by up to three people at any point in time.

    24. Amazon chief Jeff Bezos’ space company successfully re-launches, lands rocket

    ·        Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ space transportation company,Blue Origin, successfully launched and landed a suborbital rocket for a second time, a key step in its quest to develop reusable boosters.
    ·        The New Sheppard rocket and capsule, which is designed to carry six passengers, blasted off from a launch site in West Texas.
    ·        Blue Origin and SpaceX are among a handful of companies working to develop rockets that can fly themselves back to Earth so they can be refurbished and flown again, potentially slashing launch costs

    25. ‘Mumbai, Delhi among top Asia Pacific cities for millionaires’:
    ·        India’s financial hub Mumbai, which is home to 41,200 millionaires, and national capital Delhi, which houses 20,600 high net worth individuals, have been named among the top Asia Pacific cities for HNIs.
    ·        According to the Asia Pacific 2016 Wealth Report, by New World Wealth, Tokyo is the top Asia Pacific city for the ultra-rich with 2,64,000 millionaires, while Mumbai and Delhi got featured in the 12th and 20th rank respectively. Further, as many as six Indian cities got featured among ’emerging Asia Pacific cities’ with less than 10,000 HNWIs.
    ·        According to the report, the six cities include Kolkata which is home to 8,700 HNWIs, Hyderabad (7,800), Bangalore (6,700), Chennai (6,000), Pune (3,800) and Ahmadabad (3,700).
    ·        For multi-millionaires, the emerging Indian cities include, Kolkata (560 such individuals), Hyderabad (510), Bangalore (430), Chennai (390), Pune (240) and Ahmadabad (230).

    26. US startup develops smart wallet ‘Walli’:
    ·        A US based startup has developed a smart wallet ‘Walli’ priced under $100, that notifies the user of its location and contents.
    ·        Walli is operated through a dedicated mobile app available on bothAndroid and iOS platforms.
    ·        It also tracks wallet activities and notifies the user when a credit or identity card is missing from the wallet for too long.

    BANKING:
    27. RBI to introduce new 500,100 rupee notes:

    ·        RBI announced that it will soon introduce new currency notes of denominations 500 and 100 of theMahatma Gandhi Series 2005 with additional security features.
    ·        The new security features include bleed lines, ascending size of numerals in the number panels and enlarged identification mark on the obverse.

    28. Prince Narula wins ‘Big Boss 9’:
    ·        Punjab based model Prince Narula was declared the winner of reality TV show ‘Big Boss 9’.
    ·        Narula, a Mr. Punjab 2014 runner up and an MTV Roadies X2 winner was awarded the Big Boss trophy along with 35 lakh rupee cash prize.

    29. KickStarter launches official Android app:

    ·        Global crowd funding platformKickstarter launched its official Android app.
    ·        The app lets users explore, pledge, back and track innovative projects on the crowdfunding platform.
    ·        Kickstarter is a global platform that lets people with ideas ranging from art to technology raise required funds for their execution.

    SPORTS:
    30. PV Sindhu wins Malaysia Masters title:

    ·        Two-time World Championship bronze-medalist, India’s P.V. Sindhu made a rousing start to the new season as she clinched theMalaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold title after defeating Scotland’s Kristy Gilmour in straight games in the final in Penang.
    ·        This is hersecond Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold title, having won it in 2013 as well. She also completed a hat—trick at the Macau Open Grand Prix Gold in November last year.

    31. UEFA approves Goal-line Technology:

    ·        The UEFA Executive committee approved the use of Goal line Technologyforthe 2016 Euro Championship and the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League.
    ·        The system for the technology will be installed at all venues, UEFA will continue to have assistant referees near the goal line.
    ·        This technology has already been in use in the Barclays Premier League.

    32. NASA captures ‘snowzilla’ blizzard from space:

    ·        The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has captured stunning images of ‘snowzilla’ blizzard from space that has walloped eastern U.S., killing at least 14 people and paralyzing road, rail and air traffic.
    ·        The massive winter storm system pummeled the U.S., dumping nearly 58 cm of snow in suburbs of Washington DC to New York, with two low-pressure systems merging into a potent nor’easter that dropped heavy snow from Virginia to New England.
