Chhattisgarh hosts Digi-Dhan Mela today in Raipur

i) Chhattisgarh is hosting a Digi-Dhan Mela today in Raipur. It is the first in a series of such fairs to be organised in the next fortnight to promote digital modes of payment.

ii) Union Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Narendra Singh Tomar and Union Minister of State for Steel Vishnu Deo Sai, apart from Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh are attending the mela in the state capital.

iii) State government is taking various measures to promote digital payments. In the Digidhan fairs being organised in the state from today, users of digital payment mode like, Ru-pay Card, USSD, UPI and AEPS will be given prizes through lucky draw.

India’s Petronet Signs MoU to Set Up $950 Mn LNG Project in Bangladesh

i) India’s largest LNG importer Petronet has signed a MoU with Petrobangla to set up $950 million liquefied natural gas import project of 7.5 million tons a year in Bangladesh.
ii) Petronet LNG CEO and Managing Director Prabhat Singh and Petrobangla secretary Syed Ashfaquzzaman have signed this agreement. It also includes 26 Km pipeline to connect the LNG project to the consumption markets.
Supreme Court sacks Anurag Thakur, Ajay Shirke from BCCI

i) The Supreme Court has sacked BCCI president Anurag Thakur and secretary Ajay Shirke and asked all others, who were disqualified to hold posts under new court mandated norms, to step down.
ii) The court also issued contempt notices to Thakur and Shirke.A board of administrators will be named soon to take charge of the BCCI.
iii) SC has appointed Fali Nariman and senior SC lawyer Gopal Subramanium as Amicus Curiae to find out who would be the BCCI officials.
26 crore accounts open under Jan Dhan Yojana across country till date

i) Over 26 crore accounts have been opened under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana across the country till date.
ii) According to latest data released by Finance Ministry, 26 crore three lakh accounts have been opened under the scheme.
iii) Of the total, nearly 16 crore accounts are in rural areas and more than 10 crore in urban.
iv) Over 71 thousand 500 crore rupees have been deposited in these accounts and zero balance accounts has come down to nearly 24 per cent.
v) Around 20 crore RuPay Debit cards have also been issued under the scheme. More than 44 lakh accounts were allowed overdraft facility as on 23rd of last month and nearly 24 lakh account-holders availed overdraft facility.
India’s 1st transgender school opens in Kerala

i) India’s first transgender school, Sahaj International, was inaugurated in Kochi (Kerala)
ii) The alternative learning centre, which works in collaboration with the National Institute of Open Learning, will help the transgenders who dropped out of school to appear in Class X and XII examinations.
iii) The school is headed by six transgenders and a woman and has 10 students.
Madhya Pradesh plans to develop 1,100 ‘climate-smart’ villages

i) Madhya Pradesh has plan to develop 1,100 ‘climate-smart’ villages n a period of next 6 years to prepare farmers to manage the climate change risks timely and ensure good productivity said by state Farmer Welfare& Agriculture Development Department Principal Secretary Dr Rajesh Rajora
ii) According to the plan, 100 villages in each of the 11 agro-climatic zones of the state would be taken up under the National Agriculture Development Programme (NADP) and Indian National Mission on Sustainable Agriculture with a cost about Rs 150 crore every year.
Sikkim became India’s first fully organic state in 2016
i) Sikkim as it became India’s first fully organic state besides being adjudged the cleanest state, overall best in education and tourist destination while the famed Kanchenjunga National Park was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
ii) Around 75,000 hectares of agricultural land were gradually converted to certified organic land by implementing practices and principles as per guidelines laid down in National Programme for Organic Production.
British govt to launch new one-pound coin at end of March
i) The British government has announced on January 1st that it would launch a new one-pound coin at the end of March and scrap the current one pound coin by October.
ii) An announcement from the British Treasury said that the new 12-sided one pound coin would become legal tender on March 28th and the new coin would be produced by the Royal Mint in Wales.
iii) A total of 1.5 billion of the coins will be issued in the first minting. The new coin has been introduced to deter sophisticated counterfeiters who can now replicate the current coin, which has been in circulation for 30 years.
Indo-Bangladesh border to get laser walls, smart sensors

i) In order to check infiltration and terrorism, the Border Security Force (BSF) will be installing laser walls and smart sensors along the Indo-Bangladesh border in West Bengal.
ii) The satellite-monitored smart sensors will have night and fog operability tools and will blip and alert the border guards. The laser walls are set to become operational from next year.
World’s highest bridge opens in China

i) The world’s highest bridge has opened to traffic in China, connecting two provinces in the mountainous southwest and reducing travel times by as much as three-quarters.
ii) The Beipanjiang Bridge soars 565 metres (1,854 feet) above a river and connects the two mountainous provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou.

China to Ban Ivory Trade and Processing Activities by the end of 2017

i) China on December 30, 2016, announced a plan to ban all ivory trade and processing activities by the end of 2017, to prevent the mass killing and threat of extinction of African elephants.
ii) The Chinese State Council’s plan to end the ivory trade will be carried out over the course of the year. It will first force a select group of legal ivory processing factories and business to close by March 31, 2017 and gradually will completely stop the processing and sales of ivories for commercial purposes by the end of 2017.
Govt permits 12 PSU banks to raise Rs 3,000 cr from market

i) In a bid to strengthen capital base of public sector banks (PSBs), the government has allowed 12 lenders to raise nearly Rs 3,000 crore via preferential shares over and above the Rs 22,915 crore capital support committed to them in July last year.
ii) Budgetary provision of Rs 25,000 crore has been made for 2016-17 and the government has already allocated Rs 22,915 crore to 13 PSBs on July 19, 2016 of which 75 per cent has been allocated in first tranche while remaining amount will be released on assessment of performance of PSBs, the Department of Finance in its year-end review for 2016.
IDBI Slashes Lending Rates

i) IDBI Bank has taken the lead in slashing interest rates by announcing a 40 basis points (bps) cut.
ii) Borrowers seeking three-year loans will be charged 9.30%, down 40 bps; while sixmonth loans have been pegged at 8.90%, down 35 bps.
iii) The bank will charge 9.15% on one-year loans against 9.30% now
iv)State Bank of Travancore, a subsidiary of SBI, too slashed benchmark lending rate by up to 0.3%.
BoB launches agriculture investment credit scheme in Rajasthan
i) State-run Bank of Baroda has launched an agricultural investment credit for the farmers of Rajasthan.
ii) Under the scheme, farmers can avail of loan from the banks branches for construction of farm ponds, installation of solar pumps, installation of micro irrigation, and for any other viable agriculture and allied activities.
iii) Initially, the scheme will be implemented in the districts of Sri Ganganagar, Hanumangarh and Bikaner and will be gradually extended to all the districts of Rajasthan.
NRIs can exchange Old Notes till June 30

i) The RBI has come out with conditions for exchange of defunct notes for those who failed to do so.
ii) Resident Indian citizens, who were abroad from Nov 9th to Dec 30th, can avail this facility up to March 31st, 2017.
iii) NRI citizens, who were abroad during this period, can exchange their defunct notes up to June 30th, 2017.
iv) The limit for NRIs will be  25,000 rupees per person.
Mother Dairy unveils Aadhar-enabled payment

i) To promote cash less transactions, Mother Dairy Fruit& Vegetable Pvt. Ltd. introduced Aadhar-Enabled Payment System (AEPS) in more than 1,000 milk booths and ’Safal’ retail stores.
ii) This service would now be available in addition to the existing modes like e-wallets and SmartChange Cards.
iii) The service was commissioned in association with CSC e-Governance Service India Ltd. under the aegis of Department of Electronics and Information Technology (Deity).
Archana Nigam is new Controller General of Accounts

i) The Centre has appointed Archana Nigam as the next Controller General of Accounts in the Finance Ministry.
ii) Prior to this appointment, Nigam was involved in the critical task of setting up of the accounting framework for the GST regime to be launched by Government in next financial year.
iii) Nigam, who assumed charge as CGA on 2 January 2017, has been appointed in the place of M.J.Joseph, who has superannuated on 31 December 2016.

General Bipin Rawat takes over as next Chief of Army Staff

i) General Bipin Rawat took charge as the new 27th Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) of India. He succeed General Dalbir Singh Suhag who retired from the service.
ii) He had superseded two seniormost Lt Generals, Praveen Bakshi and PM Hariz. His appointment goes against the long-held convention of appointing the senior-most eligible officer to the topmost post.

Air Marshal Anil Khosla takes over as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Air Command

i) Air Marshal Anil Khosla took over as Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Eastern Air Command yesterday. As an Air Marshal he has held appointment of Senior Air Staff Officer, Central Air Command and Director General Air (Operations) at Air HQ, Vayu Bhawan.
ii) The Air Officer has vast instructional experience and has been Directing Staff at prestigious institutions like Flying Instructor School. He has held various staff appointments at Air HQ.
iii) He has had the distinction of standing first in the order of merit in various attended courses, that is, Flying Instructor Course, Junior Command Course and Staff Course among others.
iv) He has attended Senior Defence Management Course at College of Defence Management and is also an alumnus of National Defence College.
Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa takes charge as new Air Force chief

i) Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa took charge as the 22nd Chief of the Air Staff (CoAS) of the Indian Air Force (IAF).
ii) He succeeded Arup Raha who retires from the service. He is the third person from Sikh community to head the IAF after Arjan Singh and Dilbag Singh. Prior to this appointment he was Vice-Chief of IAF.

British-Indian Shankar Balasubramanian knighted for his work on DNA sequencing

i) An Indian-origin British professor of chemistry and DNA expert at Cambridge University Shankar Balasubramanian received Knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II for their contributions.
ii) He was recognised for his work as a co-inventor of Next Generation DNA sequencing (also known as Solexa sequencing), described as the most transformational advance in biology and medicine for decades.
Bharatiya Jananpith announces Navlekhan award 2016

i) Two new Hindi writers Shraddha and Ghyansham Kumar Devansh have been chosen for Bharatiya Jnanpith Navlekhan Award for the year 2016, the literary organisation announced today.
ii) The decision to confer the award on Shraddha for her short story, ‘Hawa Mein Phadphadati Chitthi’ and on Devansh for his poem ‘Akash Mein Deh’ was taken unanimously by a selection panel chaired by eminent poet Vishnu Nagar.
iii) The award, that is given to young authors in Hindi for their first creations, consists of a statue of Goddess Saraswati, a citation and a cash prize each, besides Jnanpith publishing their works, according to a statement signed by Leeladhar Mandloi, Director of Bharatiya Jnanpith.
NHPC CMD K M Singh honoured at 10th ENERTIA Awards 2016

i) State-run National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) Chairman and Managing Director K M Singh has been conferred the ‘Power& Energy Persona’s Award for Individual Excellence’ at the 10th ENERTIA Awards 2016 — India and South Asia’s awards for excellence in sustainable energy and power.
ii) Singh received the award from Former Secretary, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Upendra Tripathy

Shraddha, Ghyansham Kumar Devansh chosen for 2016 Bharatiya Jananpith Navlekhan award

i) Two new Hindi writers Shraddha and Ghyansham Kumar Devansh have been chosen for Bharatiya Jnanpith Navlekhan Award for the year 2016.

India successfully test-fires intercontinental ballistic missile Agni-IV

i) India on Monday successfully test fired the nuclear-capable Agni IV ballistic missile from the Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast.
ii) The missile was launched at about 11.50 a.m., from a mobile launcher off the Balasore coast, defence sources said. This is sixth test of the missile and second user associate launch.
iii) The two-stage solid-propelled, surface-to-surface ballistic missile is designed to carry a 1-tonne payload to a distance of 4,000 km.
iv) The test comes within a week of the successful test firing of Agni V intercontinental ballistic missile.
Gujarat CM dedicates India’s first laser technology-based check-post

i) Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani launched India’s first laser technology-based advanced AVMS RTO check-post and also laid foundation stones of various developmental works worth Rs 30 crore at Shamlaji of Aravalli district in Gujarat.
ii) This new check-post is equipped with advanced ray technology with a cost of Rs 4.72 crore.
iii) All the check-posts in the state will be made advanced, automatic and transparent with a cost of Rs. 35 crore during next financial year.The income from this check posts will be used  for welfare of poor, deprived and last-person of the state.
Karjakin pips Magnus Carlsen to win World Blitz Chess C’ship

i) Russia’s Sergey Karjakin pipped Norway’s Magnus Carlsen on the basis of a better tiebreak record to win the World Blitz Chess Championship title in Doha, Qatar
ii) Karjakin, who lost his Classical Chess World Championship match to Carlsen last month, ended at par with Carlsen, but was awarded the title for having better individual results between the two.

Rafael Nadal wins Mubadala Tennis Championships 2016 in Abu Dhabi

i) Spanish tennis veteran Rafael Nadal defeated Belgian David Goffin 6-4, 7-6 to win the Mubadala World Tennis Championships here on Saturday.
ii) The world No.9 disrupted 11th ranked Goffin’s rhythm as he had planned before the final, by switching sides and changing from slice balls to high balls on the center court of the International Tennis Centre in Abu Dhabi’s Zayed Sports City, reports Xinhua.
iii) Nadal, 30, trailed at 1-3 in the first set but regained advantage over Goffin, who overcame world No.1 Andy Murray in the semi-finals.
iii) In the second set, the game was dragged into the tiebreak where Nadal forced a number of errors from the 26-year-old and won 7-5.
Pak’s oldest living Test player Imtiaz Ahmed passes away

i) Pakistan cricket has lost its oldest living Test player Imtiaz Ahmed after he passed away in Lahore following a protracted illness.
ii) The death of Imtiaz leaves former batsman Waqar Hasan, who now lives in London, as the lone survivor from the Pakistan team’s first Test tour.
iii) Imtiaz was a member of the Pakistan squad that went on a maiden Test tour to India.He went on to play in 41 Tests as wicketkeeper-batsman, scoring 2079 runs that included 209 against New Zealand in 1955 at Goddard stadium in Lahore.
