    International Day of Co-operatives observed today
    ·       The International Co-operative Day / International Day of Co-operatives is celebrated on the first Saturday of July every year.
    ·       To be celebrated on the 2nd of July 2016, this year’stheme is ‘Co-operatives: The power to act for a sustainable future’.
    ·       Its aim is to increase awareness on co-operatives and promote promote the movement’s successes and ideals of international solidarity, economic efficiency, equality, and world peace.
    ·       The International Day also aims to to strengthen and extend partnerships between the international co-operative movement and other actors, including governments, at local, national and international levels.
    Railway Ministry to install CCTV cameras at 1000 stations
    ·       Railway Ministry will install CCTV cameras at one thousand railway stations across the country.
    ·       The camera footage will help investigate incidents taking place at the stations.
    ·       500 crore rupees have been earmarked for the purpose under Nirbhaya fund.
    ·       The Ministry has directed its zonal offices to prepare citizen charter comprising facilities available to passengers at the booking counte
    ·       The Ministry intends to fix time line for every kind of service, which railway provides to its passenge
    Rapid Rural Police Response System launched
    ·       In order to provide round-the-clock security and help people make distress calls in rural areas, the police launched the Rapid Rural Police Response System (RRPRS) across the state.
    ·       Addressing mediapersons in Fatehgarh Sahib, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harcharan Singh Bhullar said people would get help within 20 minutes of calling at the helpline number 100.
    ·       He said they had set up two lines to avoid call rush or delays. He said the department had divided 446 villages spread over four blocks of the district into 25 beats. He said 18 vans and 17 motorcycles would be available in different areas.
    Modi to undertake 4-nation Africa tour on July 7
    ·       Prime Minister NarendraModi will visit four African nations, namely Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, and Kenya, from July 7 to 11.
    ·       According to the External Affairs Ministry, Modi will meet the Presidents of the four countries and strengthen bilateral ties during the visit. Notably, South Africa is one of the few countries that didn’t favour India’s entry into the NSG.
    India& Cyprus iron out DTAA issues
    ·       The government announced that it had reached an in-principle agreement with the government of Cyprus to resolve all pending issues in order to negotiate a new Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement (DTAA) between the two countries.
    ·       Under the new system, both countries agreed to source-based taxation of capital gains. However, there will be a grandfathering clause wherein capital gains on investments made prior to April 1, 2017 will be taxed in the country of which the taxpayer is a resident.
    Sri Lanka government consulted us on OMP bill: TNA
    ·       The Tamil National Alliance (TNA), a coalition of four Tamil parties, acknowledged that the Sri Lanka government had consulted the alliance during the preparation of the draft bill on the Office on Missing Persons (OMP), which had been tabled in Parliament.
    ·       Lauding the government’s “constructive engagement” on the bill, the alliance said in a statement: “We are pleased that several of the extensive revisions we urged have been included in the gazetted text.”
    ·       It was hopeful of moving further amendments to the bill at the time of consideration of the legislation. “A law on the lines contemplated by the Bill, if implemented sincerely, could bring relief to families of the forcibly disappeared who are in desperate need of answers” the TNA said.
    SBI launches social media banking platform

    ·       India’s largest lender State Bank of India launched a social media banking platform ‘SBI Mingle’, enabling customers to access a host of banking services through their Facebook and Twitter accounts.
    ·       Further, SBI has partnered with e-commerce firm Flipkart to offer pre-approved EMI facility on purchases and launched ‘SBI Digital Villages’ to include villages in the cashless ecosystem.
    RIL, SBI sign pact to set up payments bank JV
    ·       Energy-to-telecom conglomerate Reliance Industries and India’s largest lender SBI have signed shareholders agreements to set up small deposit-taking institutions, called payments bank.
    ·       RIL-SBI combine was among the 11 entities that were in August last year given licence by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to start a payments bank.
    ·       Two of these — Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Co and grouping of Sun Pharma promoter DilipShangvi, IDFC Bank and telecom operator Telenor decided to shelve plans of launching payments bank.
    Air India paid Rs.3cr compensation in 5 months: DGCA 

    ·       According to a report by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), state-run Air India has paid Rs.3 crore in compensation over the past five months for flight delays.
    ·       Further, Air India accounts for nearly 80% of the total compensations paid by Indian carrie On an average, other airlines pay Rs.2-3 lakh every month in compensation, the report added.
    P-Note investments rise to 2.15 lakh crore in May
    ·       Investments into India’s capital markets through participatory notes (P-Notes) rose to 2.15 lakh crore at the end of May, after hitting a 20-month low in the preceding month.
    ·       P-Notes are typically instruments issued by registered foreign portfolio investors to overseas investors who wish to invest in Indian markets without registering themselves directly in India to save on time. But they still need to go through a proper due diligence process.
    ·       According to SEBI data, the total value of P-Notes investment in Indian markets — equity, debt and derivatives — increased to 2.15 lakh crore at the end of May from 2.12 lakh crore in March-end.
    PrasarBharati to clear dues over Rs 156 crore to producers, including Ramesh Sippy and Balaji Telefilms

    ·       India’s public service broadcaster PrasarBharati owes dues worth over Rs 156 crore to producers –including Ramesh Sippy’s RS Entertainment and EktaKapoor’sBalaji Telefilms–which may cast its shadow on its new slot sale policy, thus demotivating producers to invest again in Doordarshan.
    ·       The slot sale policy was launched recently by Doordarshan for auctioning prime time slots of DD National. Unlike its earlier policy, Doordarshan would not have to invest large amount of money to acquire programmes under the new policy.
    IndrajitCoomaraswamy new Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka

    ·       IndrajitCoomaraswamy, veteran economist, is the new Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL).
    ·       President MaithripalaSirisena announced Prof. Coomaraswamy’s appointment on Saturday morning through his official twitter account.
    ·       Dr. Coomaraswamy succeeds ArjunaMahendran, whose tenure, marked by controversies on the issuance of bonds, came to an end.
    President Pranab Mukherjee presents B C Roy National Awards for 2008, 2009 and 2010

    India’s first integrated Defence Communication Network launched

    ·       India’s firstintegrated Defence Communication Network (DCN) was launched by Union Defence Minister ManoharParrikar in South Block, Delhi. The network will enable India Army, Air force, Navy and the Special Forces Command to share situational awareness for a faster decision-making process.
    Sandhu 1st Indian to start a Europa League game
    ·       Gurpreet Singh Sandhu became the first Indian to start in a Europa League match, when he appeared for Stabæk against Wales’ Gap Connah’s Quay in the first qualifying round in Wales.
    ·       However, Sandhu, the Indian football team’s goalkeeper, was substituted 28 minutes into play due to an injury. Sandhu signed for the Norwegian side in August 2014.
    Jayaram, Praneeth reach semifinals of Canada Open

    ·       Indian shuttlers Ajay Jayaram and B SaiPraneeth advanced to the semifinals of the $ 55,000 Canada Open Grand Prix badminton tournament after notching up contrasting victories in the men’s singles competition in Calgary.
    ·       Top seeded Jayaram defeated fellow Indian HarsheelDani 21-18 19-21 21-8 in a hard-fought match that lasted 47 minutes.
    ·       The two-time Dutch Open winner, Jayaram will face Korea’s Lee Hyun Il, seeded third, in the semifinals.
    Union Sports Ministry grants recognition to Paralympic Committee of India
    ·       The Sports Ministry granted recognition to Paralympic Committee of India, giving a huge confidence boost to the several para-athletes who have qualified for Rio Paralympics.
    ·       The ministry’s move comes less than a month after the International Paralympic Committee announced temporary lifting of suspension imposed on the national body last year so that Indians can take part under the tri-colour in the showpiece event in September.
    Ravi Shastri resigns from ICC Cricket Committee after Anil Kumble takes charge as India coach

    ·       Former India captain and Team Director Ravi Shastrihas resigned from his post as media representative in ICC’s prestigious Cricket Committee.
    ·       Incidentally, the chairman of ICC Cricket Committee is current Team India coach Anil Kumble, who pippedShastri to the job after getting nod from high profile Cricket Advisory Committee.

    Eminent Marathi literary scholar R C Dhere no more
    ·       Eminent Marathi writer R C Dhere, known for his exhaustive research in folk literature and bhakti tradition of Maharashtra, passed away here this morning following prolonged illness, family sources said.He was 86.
