    1).Orissa Governmentimposed a7-month ban till May, 2016 on fishing along thePuri coast to protect the endangeredOlive Ridley sea turtles
    ·        Featuresof Olive Ridley Turtles
    a)   Scientific name –Lepidochelys olivacea
    b)   They are also known as thePacific ridley sea turtle
    c)  They are generally found in warm and tropical waters, primarily in thePacific andIndian Oceans
    d)   They are protected under theSchedule-I of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 of India

    ·        This ban comes before the arrival of Olive Ridley turtles for nesting in winters along the east coast of Orissa
    ·        Every year around5 lakh to10 lakh turtles arrive during winters for mass nesting in the following locations along the Orissa coast
    a)   Rushikulyariver mouth
    b)   Gahirmathamarine sanctuary
    ·        The coast is considered as the only place apart fromCosta Rica to witness mass nesting by Olive Ridleys turtles
    ·        The State Forest Department has set up turtle protection camps including the following structures in Gahirmatha marine sanctuary
    a)   3– off-shore camps
    b)   13– on-shore camps
    c)   4– Temporary incubation centers for safety of eggs
    ·        Under this banTrawlers andfishermen are banned to fish within20 kms from coastline in the turtle nesting sites
