International Day of Persons with Disabilities is being observed today

i. International Day of Persons with Disabilities being observed on 03rd December 2016. Disability Day is a day that has been promoted by the United Nations since 1992.
The aim of Disability Day is to encourage a better understanding of people affected by a disability, together with helping to make people more aware of the rights, dignity and welfare of disabled people, as well as raise awareness about the benefits of integrating disabled persons into every aspect of life.
ii. The theme of World Disability Day for 2016 is: Achieving 17 Goals for the Future We Want, which draws attention to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and how these goals can create a more inclusive and equitable world for persons with disabilities.
National Pollution Control Day 2016 observed in India

2 December: National Pollution Control Day

The National Pollution Control Day 2016 was observed on 2 December 2016 in India with an aim to make aware the people and industries about the need of Pollution Control Acts. This day is observed every year to give honour to thousands of human beings who lost their lives in 1984 due to the Bhopal gas tragedy and who were left severely affected due to leakage of poisonous gas from Union Carbide plant in Bhopal. This catastrophe was the worst in the world’s industrial history and people there still continue to witness physical and mental disabilities.
Kerala Govt to launch campaign to counter smear against coconut oil

i. Kerala Government will launch an aggressive campaign based on scientific studies to counter the smear campaign against coconut oil. Agriculture Minister V.S. Sunilkumar said yesterday that there was a systematic and organised campaign involving a section of medical professionals also against edible coconut oil.

ii. Government will immediately organise a sustained campaign with the help of solid scientific studies proving that coconut oil is the best oil for cooking, the Minister said. In the past, a smear campaign against coconut oil created misunderstanding that it was not healthy, and stopped using it, he added.
Odisha to get Rs 70,000 crore from 12 coal blocks :Piyush Goyal
i. Union Coal Minister Piyush Goyal has said that Odisha will get 70 thousand crore rupees from the 12 coal blocks allocated to the state. Addressing the valedictory session of the ‘Make in Odisha’ conclave yesterday at Bhubaneswar, Mr. Goyal said the State’s mining industry has the potential to transform the state into one with full employment to its people.MrGoyal, who is also Union Power Minister, also said that every village of Odisha would be electrified by May 2018.
Union Petroleum Minister DharmendraPradhan said Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited would set up an ethanol plant based on agricultural residue at Bargarh in Odisha at a cost of 9 hundred crore rupees. He said eastern India, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal will be connected with natural gas pipeline that would benefit the people immensely.
Suresh Prabhu lays foundation stone for Rolling Stock Component factory
i. Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu laid the foundation stone for the Rolling Stock Component factory, estimated to cost nearly Rs 300 crore, in Maharshtra’s Ratnagiri district today. While addressing the gathering, the Railway Minister assured that Humsafar Express running between Mumbai and Goa, will commence soon. For the project, 50 acres land has been acquired from the MIDC in LoteParshuram area nearChiplun in Ratnagiri district.
ii. The centralised Railway Rolling Stock Components factory can discharge the works of overhaul and rehabilitation of safety sub-assemblies of railway rolling stock. Indian Railways will accrue the vital benefits like improvement in reliability of wagons and coaches, increased availability and higher rolling stock and reliability from the facility. Union minister of heavy industries and public enterprises AnandGeete too was present at the ceremony.
Delhi Airport world’s 22nd most connected
i. The Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi is the 22nd most connected airport in the world, according to air travel intelligence company OAG. Mumbai Airport has been ranked 28th, while OAG’s 2016 Megahubs Index has been topped by Chicago Airport in the United States. 
ii. Meanwhile, the Atlanta and Dallas Airports, also in the US, have ranked second and third.

Spanish city changes name for third time in a decade
i. A Spanish city has changed its name for the third time in a decade, renaming itself Palma from Palma de Mallorca. ii. The regional government voted for the name change, claiming the “de Mallorca” tag to be a leftover from Spain’s centralist past. The city was renamed Palma in 2008, but its name was changed to Palma de Mallorca in 2012

New York emerges as most Instagrammed city of 2016
i. New York has emerged as the most geotagged city on Instagram in 2016, followed by London and Moscow. São Paulo and Paris have ranked fourth and fifth respectively. ii. Meanwhile, Los Angeles, Saint Petersburg, Rio de Janeiro, Istanbul and Jakarta have also featured on the list of the Most Geotagged Cities by the photo-sharing app.

RBI defers Aadhaar-enabled devices
i. RBI(Reserve Bank of India) defers mandatory implementation of Aadhaar-enabled  PoS (Point of Sale) devices till June 30,2017. The RBI said banks, authorised card payment networks and white-label ATM operators have time till June 30, 2017, for deployment of Aadhaar-enabled devices. The central bank said the rate of deployment of acceptance infrastructure has slowed owing to the mismatch between demand and supply of such Aadhaar-enabled devices. As there is currently a limited capacity to produce such devices.
Undisclosed amount of INR 1.64 crore found in Jan Dhan accounts
i. The Income Tax Department on Friday found undisclosed amount worth INR1.64 crore deposited by people, who never filed income returns, into Jan Dhan accounts. These accounts were found in Kolkata, Bihar, Kochi, and Varanasi. Notably, the department initiated probe into the sudden surge in cash deposits in Jan Dhan accounts and found various inconsistencies.

Ruchi Soya to provide banking assistance to farmers

i. Edible oil firm Ruchi Soya Industries in association with State Bank of India (SBI)  launched an initiative to provide banking assistance to farmers. Under the initiative ‘KisanKalyanAyojan’, the company will help farmers to open bank accounts, procure the produce directly from farmers at the right price and ensure farmers get their payment immediately through internet banking.
ii. To start off, banking assistance will be provided to soybean farmers in Indore, Samwer, Manglia and Ujjain mandis in Madhya Pradesh.The company will further plans to expand this initiative across the country in states like Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat.
RuPay card usage jumps 118.6% in 1st week of demonetisation

i. RuPay card usage jumped by over 118.6 per cent in the week following demonetisation that took effect from November 8 mid-night while the overall debit and credit card transactions recorded an increase of 70.5 per cent. According to RBI data, the usage of RuPay card at POS terminals soared by as much as 200.6 per cent to 46.6 lakh transactions during November 9-15.
ii. This compares with 15.5 lakh swipes during November 1-8. RBI said a total of 65.6 lakh transactions were recorded through RuPay cards during November 9-15. This includes 19 lakh spendings through e-commerce platforms.

i. Aditya Birla Financial Services Group (ABFSG) launched new insurance arm under Aditya Birla Health Insurance (ABHICL) Aim: To be the most preferred customer partner by 2020. Market Stabilisation Scheme (MSS) limit raises to Rs 6 lakh crore to manage liquidity
i. In order to mop up extra liquidity from the system in view of demonetisation, Reserve Bank has sharply raised the Market Stabilisation Scheme (MSS) ceiling to 6 lakh crore rupees from 30,000 crore rupees. Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das said in Mumbai that RBI will operate within that limit as per requirement, not as if the entire quantum of MSS would be utilised overnight. The Reserve Bank said in a notification that after the withdrawal of the legal tender character of the Rs 500/1,000 denomination notes with effect from November 9, there has been a surge in deposits with the banks.
ii. Consequently, there has been a significant increase of liquidity in the banking system that is expected to continue for some time, it said.As part of liquidity management exercise, RBI last week asked lenders to temporarily maintain an incremental cash reserve ratio (CRR) of 100 per cent. CRR is the portion of the deposits banks are required to park with the Reserve Bank. The actual current rate of CRR is 4 per cent.
Airtel Payments Bank to offer talk-time on new savings account
i. Airtel Payments Bank, the first payments bank in India introduce that any customer opening a savings account with it will get one minute of talk time on his/her Airtel mobile for every rupee deposited. If a customer opens an account with a deposit of Rs1,000 then he/she will get 1,000 minutes of free talk time on his/her Airtel mobile number. The talk time can be used for calling all over India. This benefit is applicable on first time deposits only.The offer will be valid from Airtel to Airtel mobile minutes with a validity period of 30 days.
ICMR and ICAR inks MoU to Strengthen Mutual Cooperation
i. Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) signed a MoU with Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) on December 1, 2016, for cooperation in the area of zoonoses, anti-microbial resistance, nutrition and pesticide residues. The MoU was signed by Dr. SoumyaSwaminathan, Secretary (DHR)& Director General (ICMR) and Dr. TrilochanMohapatra, Secretary (DARE)& Director General (ICAR) to strengthen the ties between the two organizations and energize environment of mutual cooperation and collaboration.
ii. The MoU signing ceremony was presided over by Shri J P Nadda, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare and ShriRadha Mohan Singh, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. ShriFaggan Singh Kulaste, MoS (Health and Family Welfare) among others.
India, Qatar sign 4 agreements in various fields
i. India and Qatar signed four agreements in the fields of cyber security, visa relaxation, and investments in the presence of Prime Minister NarendraModi and visiting Prime Minister of Qatar Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani in New Delhi today. Additionally, another MoU aimed at encouraging greater collaboration and exchange in field of national ports management of India and Qatar has also been signed.
ii. This is the first visit of Sheikh Abdullah to India and the third high-level bilateral engagement between the two countries in the past two years, which underlines India’s growing ties with Qatar. Indians form the largest expatriate community in Qatar and their positive contribution in the progress and development of their host country is well recognized. There are over 630,000 Indian nationals working in Qatar.
Chitra Ramkrishna quits as CEO& MD of NSE, J Ravichandran to take charge for interim period
i. Chitra Ramkrishna, Managing Director (MD) and chief executive of the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) has resigned from her post, even as the country’s largest  Chitra Ramkrishna quits bourse is set to go public. The NSE board met on December 2, 2016 and accepted her resignation. The note added that Ramkrishna had tendered her resignation owing to personal reasons and expressed her desire to step down with immediate effect.
ii. Her tenure was supposed to end in March 2018. The board has set up a selection committee to find a replacement for Ramkrishna and has appointed group president J Ravichandran as interim chief executive officer (CEO).
Crown Prince MahaVajiralongkorn appointed new Thai King
i. 64 year old Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn has become the king of Thailand, on December 1, 2016, 50 days after the death of his father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej. He will succeed his father, King BhumibolAdulyadej, who reigned for 70 years, from 1946, through 10 military coups and dozens of prime ministers, until his death Oct. 13 at 88.
ii. The new king, Bhumibol’s only son, will be called His Majesty King MahaVajiralongkornBodindradebayavarangkun, but as the 10th king of the 234-year-old Chakri dynasty, he can also be called King Maha X. However, the new king will not formally be crowned until after his father’s cremation, which is expected in 2017.
RakeshAsthana appointed as CBI in-charge

i. The government on Friday appointed Gujarat-cadre 1984 batch IPS officer RakeshAsthana as the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Asthana was made in-charge after the government couldn’t finalise the name for the new CBI director on time. The panel that chooses the CBI Director comprises the Prime Minister, Leader of Opposition and the Chief Justice of India.

Salman appointed ambassador of BMC’s Swachh Bharat Mission’
i. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation(BMC) has roped actor Salman Khan for it’s drive against open defecation and litter said by Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta Salman’s Being Human Foundation decided donate five mobile toilets to the BMC to be placed at Bandstand The BMC recently declared 12 out of Mumbai’s 24 wards open defecation free and promised that the rest will join the list by the end of this year.

UAE-based Indian wins International Children’s Peace Prize
i. A 16-year-old Indian girl based in the UAE has won this year’s International Children’s Peace Prize for her fight for climate justice and combating environmental degradation. ii. KehkashanBasu was presented the award by Nobel peace laureate Muhammad Yunus at The Hague. At the age of 12, Kehkashan founded her organisation Green Hope, which now has operations in over 10 countries.

Usain Bolt wins a record sixth ‘Athlete of the Year’ award
i. Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt won the International Association of Athletics Federations’ award for male athlete of the year for a record sixth time on Friday. He last won the award in 2013, while his first win came in 2008. Bolt, who is undefeated this season in all distances, completed his ‘triple-triple’ of 100-metres, 200-metres and 4×100-metres Olympic golds in August.
LeBron named Sports Ilustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year 2016
i. Basketball player LeBron James has been chosen as the Sports Illustrated’s Sportsperson of the Year, becoming the second athlete ever to win the award twice. James edged out Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, Premier League champions Leicester City, among others. James had led his team Clevel and Cavaliers to the 2016 NBA(National Basketball Association) title and was named NBA Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Kolkata gets best cities award for tackling climate change
i. Kolkata, along with 10 other cities from across the globe, has been honoured with the best cities of 2016 award in recognition of its programme on solid waste management. Kolkata, the only Indian city to win the honour, received the award during the C40 Mayors Summit held in Mexico. 
ii. Other cities which won the award include Copenhagen, Sydney, and Paris.
Talks with Andhra to convert INS Viraat into hotel: Navy

i. Talks between the Navy and Andhra Pradesh government to convert INS Viraat into a luxury hotel-cum-museum after its decommissioning are underway, the Navy has announced. Andhra Pradesh has shown interest in getting INS Viraat to berth in Visakhapatnam to promote tourism, the Navy added. The state has drawn up plans to convert it into a 500-room hotel, according to reports.
V Sindhu jumps 2 places to career-best 7th in latest Badminton World Federation rankings
i. Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu jumped two places to achieve her career-best ranking of seven in the world, while SainaNehwal is also back in the top 10 in the latest BWF World Ranking.Sindhu, who clinched the China Open and then reached the finals at the Hong Open, has 68,699 ranking points. She will carry India hopes at the Dubai Super Series Final, a prestigious tournament she qualified for the first time.
ii. Former World No. 1 Saina, who is on a comeback trail after recovering from a serious injury, improved a spot after slipping five places to 11th place last week.K Srikanth, who is out of action since undergoing an injury, slipped a place to World No. 13, while Hong Kong Finalist Sameer Verma jumped 13 places to be World No. 30.
F1 world champion NicoRosberg announces retirement
i. Less than a week after winning the world championship at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Mercedes driver NicoRosberg on Friday announced his retirement from Formula One with immediate effect. Rosberg’s father KekeRosberg had won the championship in 1982, and NicoRosberg’s F1 championship made him only the second son of a champion to take the title since 1950.

Arsenal’s Walcott sets Guinness Record for football control
i. Arsenal forward Theo Walcott has set a Guinness World Record for the highest altitude football dropped and controlled at the club’s training ground. Walcott controlled the football which was dropped from a height of 111 feet through the five touches required for a successful attempt. ii. His teammates Laurent Koscielny, Nacho Monreal and Francis Coquelin failed to match the record.

Former Hockey Umpire Phulel Singh Sujlana Died
i. Former international hockey umpire and veteran administrator, Phulel Singh Sujlana, passed away on December 2, 2016 in Mumbai due to old age. Sujlana has served various positions in his long career. He was vice president of the Mumbai Hockey Association Limited MHAL from 1997 and secretary for four years from 2000-2004, the technical director at the four-nation tournament in Brussels in 1993, the chairman of the IHF (Indian Hockey Federation) Umpires Board from 1985 to 1993 and chairman of its Technical Committee in 1985.
