    1). Union Government abolished export duty on Iron Ore Pellets:

    ·        To improve capacity utilization of pellet plants and boost the sector, UnionGovernmenton 5 January 2016reduced export duty oniron ore pellets tozero from 5 percent.
    ·        A notification in this regard was issued by theCentral Board of Excise andCustoms (CBEC). The move will make the commodity more competitive amid subdued demand and weakening prices.

    2). Union Government approved 33 percent representation of women in CAPFs:

    ·        Union Home MinisterRajnath Singh on 5 January 2016 approved the33 percentposts at constable level to befilled up by women. The step was taken with a view to enhance representation of women in Central Armed PoliceForces (CAPFs).
    ·        According to an official statement, the 33 percent reservation of women constable level posts would be in CRPF and CISF and 14-15 percent posts would be in border guarding forces that is BSF, SSB& ITBP.

    3). Kakatiya thermal plant commissioned in Telangana:

    ·        Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao today dedicated the600-MW Kakatiya thermal power plant Stage-IIatBhoopalapally in Warangal district of the State.
    ·        This is thefirst major power plantto be commissioned after the formation of the new State of Telangana in June 2014.
    ·        The total installed capacity ofTS Genco has now gone up to5,045.26 MW, which includes 2,882.50 MW of thermal power, 2,161.76 MW of hydel power and 1 MW of solar power.

    4). JHARKHAND Government, JBVNL Signed MOU under UDAY Scheme:
    ·        First state to sign MOU with Centre forPower Scheme UDAY.
    ·        Total no.of.states that will join UDAY scheme now hasrisen to 15.

    5). BARC tech to help clean Ganga of industry waste

    ·        With the Centre taking multiple measures to fulfill its cleanGanga mission, the country’s premier atomic research bodyBhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) has offered membrane based water treatment system to clean the national river.
    ·        The membrane-based technology can help remove heavy metals from water in rivers, reservoirs or ponds.
    ·        The new technology can be used in the stretch of the Ganga where it gets lot of industrial and municipal discharge as merely setting up conventional sewage treatment plants (STPs) and Central Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) are not enough to clean the river. At present, 764 industrial units are located along or near the banks of the Ganga.

    6). Filippo Grandi was appointed as the new High Commissioner for the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR)

    ·        Grandi succeededAntonio Guterres, a former Portuguese Prime Minister, who retired on 31 December 2015 after heading the Refugee Agency for10 years.

    8). Forbes list of achievers under the age of 30 announced:

    ·        The Forbes fifth annual ‘30 Under 30’ list features600 women and men, who are America’s “most important young entrepreneurs, creative leaders and brightest stars” and are“changing the world” across 20 varied sectors such as consumer technology, education, media, manufacturing and industry, law and policy, social entrepreneurs, science and art and science.
    ·        Forty five Indians and Indian-origin people have made it to Forbes’ annual list of achievers under the age of 30 who are “changing the rules of the game or creating entirely new playbooks” across varied fields.
    ·        In the consumer tech segment is22-year-old Ritesh Agarwal, the founder and CEO of OYO Rooms, billed to be the Airbnb of India.

    10). Volkswagen faces penalties as US sues for environmental violations

    ·        Volkswagencould face penalties exceeding$90 billion, or as much as $37,500 per vehicle per violation of the law.
    ·        German car maker Volkswagen may face billions of penalties as the U.S. Justice Department filed a civil lawsuit against it for violating the Clean Air Act by installing illegal devices to impair emission control systems in nearly600,000 diesel cars.

    11). 37-metre-tall golden Chairman Mao statue appears in the Chinese countryside:

    ·        AGiant golden statue ofChairman Mao has been built in the remote Chinese countryside.
    ·        The building of the huge sitting image ofMao Zedong, the late communist revolutionary and founding father ofthe People’s Republic of China, who poured 3 million Yuan.
    ·        The statue, which is around37 meters high, is situated in a rural area of Tongxu County in Henan Province the epicenter of a famine which killed tens of millions in the late 1950s, partly as a result of Mao’s policies.

    12). Extra-long tweets: Twitter considering 10,000-character limit for tweets
    ·        Twitter’s 140 character limit on tweets has long frustrated and challenged its most verbose users.

    ·        Now the company could offer a solution, according to tech news website re/code: the10,000 character tweet, which could be available as soon as March.
    ·        Re/code reported that Twitter has been studying how to allow users to say more, after restricting them to 140 characters for 10 years.

    13). Largest blue star sapphire found in Sri Lanka

    ·        Theworld’s largest blue star sapphire, weighing1404.49 carets and valued at an astonishing $100 million, has been found in a mine inSri Lanka.
    ·        Sri Lankan gemologists say the sapphire was found in the city ofRatnapura,in southern Sri Lanka, which is known as the’City of Gems.’
    ·        It could fetch $175 million. It has now been valued at $100 million with estimates that it could even be sold at auction for $175 million.
