International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
International Women’s Day (IWD) has been observed since in the early 1900’s – a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies. International Women’s Day is a collective day of global celebration and a call for gender parity. No one government, NGO, charity, corporation, academic institution, women’s network or media hub is solely responsible for International Women’s Day.
App to locate board exam centre for students launched by CBSE :
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released a mobile application, Exam Locator, to help students locate their examination centre. A student can find the address, images, geolocation of the centre on the map, and the route to reach there through the application, an official said. CBSE exams for Class 10 and 12 begin on March 9.
India’s longest cable-bridge inaugurated by PM Modi in Gujarat :
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday inaugurated India’s longest cable-bridge in Bharuch, Gujarat, which is 1,344 metres long and 22.8 metres wide. The bridge, built by Larsen and Toubro on river Narmada, has 216 cables of 25-40 metres length. The ₹379 crore project has a 17.4-metre wide four-lane road, a three-metre wide footpath, and over 400 LED lights.

Two-day International Yoga fest starts today in New Delhi :
The two-day International Yoga fest will begin in New Delhi today. Our correspondent reports that Information and Broadcasting Minister Venkaiah Naidu will inaugurate the fest at Talkatora stadium.
More than 3,500 participants including eminent yoga gurus, yoga masters, scholars, policy makers and representatives from 15- 18 countries will participate in this mega event. It will comprise parallel yoga workshop, lectures, Satsang, cultural programmes and yoga demos.
48,000 cr budget plan presented by Delhi govt for 2017-18 :
Delhi government today presented 48,000 crore budget for 2017-18 in the Assembly. Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Manish Sisodia said the budget has no provision for imposition of any new tax.
He said, 11300 crore rupees have been proposed for education sector out of which 17 crore rupees have been set aside for libraries for nursery and primary classes. He said, several new school buildings were constructed in 2016-17 and principals and teachers are being sent abroad for higher training.

Girl child ratio of Haryana increases to 938 pre 1000 Male :
In Haryana, girl child ratio has increased to 938 per 1000 male children in February. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal today informed this in the house during ongoing budget session of the State Assembly.
He told that in January this year, the registered girl child ratio was 922. The Chief Minister said that the gradual increase in the ratio of girl child is result of effective implementation of ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ programme implemented by Prime Minister from Panipat in the country.

Ex-gratia grant rate to be enhanced by Haryana govt for CPMF’s family members :
Haryana Government has decided to enhance the rate of ex-gratia grant given to the family members of the Central Para Military Forces (CPMF), who die in harness or are disabled in performance of their official duties while serving in operational area in war or in terrorist attack.
Stating this at Chandigarh today, a spokesman of Sainik and Ardh Sainik Welfare Department said that in case of death in war and action against terrorists and death during internal security duty, operations, election duty, natural calamities and rescue operations the rate of assistance has been enhanced from 20 lakh to 50 lakh rupees.

Amendment bill for Thackeray Memorial got clearance from Maharashtra Assembly :
An amendment to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act was approved by the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly today, paving way for construction of late Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray’s memorial in the Mayor’s bungalow.
The bill, in this regard was presented by the Minister of State for Urban Development Ranjit Patil and was passed unanimously. Meanwhile, the state council witnessed noisy scenes with the opposition demanding termination of Independent MLC Prashant Paricharak’s membership.

Committee set by Sports ministry to look over women players’ grievances :
Sports Minister Vijay Goel has constituted a high level committee to look in to the grievances of women players. Addressing a conference on Women and Sports in India in New Delhi today, Mr Goel said the five member committee will be headed by Joint Secretary of Sports Ministry. The panel will included two women player and one sports journalist.
He also announced that government will soon start a diploma course for women coaches. The Minister said it will help those women players who want to become coach.

New Israeli law bars entry for its foreign critics :
Israel’s parliament on Monday voted 46-28 in favour of a bill to bar foreign nationals, who publicly support an anti-Israel boycott, from entering the country. Israel faces a global boycott movement over its nearly 50-year occupation of Palestinian territories. The lawmakers described the boycott movement as a war against the country for which it was not prepared properly.

British PM Theresa May suffers second defeat in House of Lords over Brexit Bill :
British Prime Minister Theresa May has suffered a second Brexit Bill defeat in the House of Lords as peers backed, by 366 votes to 268, calls for a meaningful parliamentary vote on the final terms of withdrawal.
After a three-hour debate yesterday, for the second time in a week, Lords amended the legislation that will authorise May to notify the EU of the UK’s
intention to leave and pave the way for official Brexit talks to begin.

‘work from home’ facility introduced by SBI for its employees :
The State Bank of India (SBI) on Tuesday launched a ‘work from home’ facility to enable employees to work while at home using mobile devices. SBI will centrally control all the work from home-enabled devices to secure their data and applications. Services like cross-sell, marketing and complaints management will also be enabled to be worked from home.

5th satellite of Copernicus observation program launched by EU :
European Union launched the fifth satellite of the Copernicus observation program yesterday, which will cut the time of imaging the earth by half. The European Commission said in a statement that latest Copernicus satellite launch will improve services for farmers, fishermen and other users of land and sea maps.
The Copernicus earth observation program, created by the European Union, is served by a set of satellites. The program is aimed at improving the life of EU communities by providing near-real-time global environment data.

Sindhu, Saina to represent Indian challenge at All England Open Championships :
In Badminton, Olympic medalists PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal are leading the Indian challenge in the prestigious All England Open Championships being held at Birmingham. In the women’s singles event, Rio Olympic Silver medalist Sindhu has been given the 6th seed, while London Olympic Bronze medalist has attained the 8th seed.
In the first round game today, Sindhu will face unseeded Danish player Mette Poulsen, on the other hand Nehwal will take on the defending champion Nozomi Okuhara from Japan.
ICC Test bowlers ranking 1st place jointly hold by Ashwin, Jadeja :
The Indian duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja today became the first set of spinners to be jointly ranked number one in the ICC Test rankings for bowlers.
Jadeja caught up with Ashwin in the rankings after the second Test against Australia in Bengaluru which India won yesterday. Jadeja’s seven wickets in the match, which included crucial six wickets in the first innings, have helped him move up one rank to reach the top position for the first time in his career, the ICC said in a statement.
The last time two bowlers shared the top spot was in April 2008, when Dale Steyn and Muttiah Muralidaran were at the top.
Among batsmen, India captain Virat Kohli conceded the second rank to England’s Joe Root after managing only 27 runs in the match and 40 in the series so far. Root is now one point ahead of Kohli at 848 points.
