PMGDSA mission got approval from Cabinet to improve rural digital literacy :
The Union Cabinet has approved the ‘Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan’ which aims to make six crore rural households digitally literate. Implemented by the Ministry of Electronics and IT, it is expected to be one of the largest digital literacy programmes globally. The mission, which aims to achieve its goal by March 2019, has an outlay of₹2,351.38 crore.

Elahiganj the first village in West Bengal’s to ban alcohol :
Elahiganj in Murshidabad district has become the first village in Bengal to ban sale and consumption of alcohol and narcotics. About 6,000 residents of Elahiganj decided to do so after six people died of hooch consumption in neighbouring district in January. The village has also decided to impose a fine of₹2,000 on anyone consuming alcohol or hooch.

The government is going to start Highways Advisory Services to provide real time traffic updates on 12 National Highways in 13 States through All India Radio. Replying to supplementaries in the Lok Sabha, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said phase one of the pilot project was implemented on Delhi-Jaipur National Highway No.8.
He said, in Delhi, Alwar and Jaipur, real time traffic updates of duration five minutes each, is being provided in 18 bulletins everyday through All India Radio Stations.
The government today introduced the Indian Institutes of Management Bill, 2017 in the Lok Sabha. The bill was moved by Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar.
It seeks to declare certain institutes of management to be institutions of national importance to empower them to attain standards of global excellence in management, management research and allied areas of knowledge.
Centre has permitted the Assam government to use drones for vigilance at the Kaziranga national park. In a written reply, state Forest minister Pramila Rani Brahma informed state assembly today that several steps are being taken to prevent rhino poaching at the Kaziranga and other national parks.
The minister said that process has already begun to appoint a 112 members Rhino Protection Force. Ms. Brahma said that security forces arrested 207 poachers last year. On the other hand, poachers killed 10 rhinos during last eight months.

Centre has formed a committee to expedite the implementation of its ambitious Namami Gange programme under which it plans to free the Ganga river of waste by next year. Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti announced to form the committee while chairing the first meeting of the empowered task force on Ganga in New Delhi yesterday.
The secretaries of ministries of Water Resources, Environment and Forest, and Drinking Water and Sanitation will be members of the panel, which will meet at least once every fortnight.
In Uttarakhand assembly elections, Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines will be installed at 553 polling booths. A voter can confirm the vote cast by him through the VVPAT machine on the lines of an ATM receipt.
Earlier, 956 VVPAT machines were to be installed in 4 assembly constituencies but due to shortage of such machines only 553 booths will now have these machines in place.S

Ahead of the first phase of polling in Uttar Pradesh, the Delhi government has ordered that Dry Day will be observed in the national capital from today evening till Saturday in 100 metre radius of the border points.
The Delhi Excise Department said, all liquor shops will be closed from 5 PM today till 5 PM on Saturday, the day of polling. The department said, retail vends in the national capital within 100 meters of Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border will be closed during the period.

In Andhra Pradesh the Sagaramala Project aimed at improving the coastline and inland waterways has gained momentum with the appointing of a 33-members committee under the Chairmanship of the Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for speedy completion of the project. The committee will take the responsibility to oversee the project, besides reviewing it on daily basis and also bring together all concerned departments to strive to make sure that it is completed well within time.
Mr. Naidu who held the first meeting with the committee members on Wednesday gave the directions emphasizing that Andhra Pradesh which has the 2nd largest coastline has many opportunities for a coast-led industrial economy.

IBM will be training 2.5 crore Africans in the next five years for free under its digital-skills training program to build its workforce on the continent. IBM plans for an initial investment of₹470 crore for the program in South Africa, where 31% of 15 to 24 year-olds are unemployed. “Africa will have world’s largest workforce by 2040,” said IBM.

Nepal is set to create free WiFi zones at the 5,360-metre-high Everest base camp, making it the world’s highest location offering free WiFi services. Nepal Telecommunications Authority Chairperson Digambar Jha said the WiFi service will facilitate communication and help aid rescue efforts. Jha added that special optical fibres resistant to cold weather and icefall will be used for the service.

Dr Shawna Pandya, a neurosurgeon working at Canada’s Alberta University Hospital has been selected for a space mission. When she takes off, she would be the third Indian-origin woman to go to space, after Kalpana Chawla and Sunita Williams. The 32-year-old was one of the two candidates shortlisted from 3,200 people for the 2018 space mission.
British MPs have overwhelmingly agreed in House of Commons to let the government begin the UK’s departure from the EU as they voted for the Brexit bill. The draft legislation was approved by 494 votes to 122, and now moves to the House of Lords. Shadow business Secretary Clive Lewis was one of 52 Labour MPs to defy party orders to back the bill and he resigned from the front bench.
PM Theresa May wants to trigger formal Brexit talks by the end of March. She will do this by invoking Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, but requires Parliament’s permission before doing so.

Bank of America has opened three completely automated branches in the US which do not employ any human. At the automated branches, customers can use ATMs and have video conferences with the employees at other branches. About a fourth of the size of a typical branch, these branches sell mortgages, credit cards and auto loans rather than cashing cheques.

India remains near the bottom in an international Intellectual Property (IP) index by being ranked 43rd out of 45 countries, according to a report by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Global Intellectual Property Center (GIPC).
The report said it includes 90% of global gross domestic product, and grades countries on patents, trademarks, copyright, trade secrets, enforcement, and international treaties. Only two countries were ranked below India – Pakistan (44th) and Venezuela (45th). The U.S., the U.K., Germany, Japan, Sweden, France, Switzerland, Singapore, South Korea and Italy completed the top 10 ranks. Among the BRICS countries China was ranked 27th, South Africa (33rd), Brazil (32nd) and Russia (23rd).
Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla could be the Chairman of the entity formed by the merger of telecom majors Vodafone and Idea, according to reports. “Vodafone can’t be seen as having greater control in the merged entity,” sources added. The proposed merger will create the nation’s largest telecom firm with combined revenue of around₹80,000 crore.
In US, Senate voted today to confirm Republican Senator Jeff Sessions as the next Attorney General of the United States. The Alabama senator is known for his tough stance on immigration enforcement and his early support of President Donald Trump who nominated him for the job. Session was confirmed by a 52-47 vote.

Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova has been given a wildcard entry in the Madrid Open, which will be held two weeks after her doping ban expires. Sharapova, who was serving a 15-month doping ban, will make a comeback at the Stuttgart Grand Prix in Germany in April, after which she will participate in the Madrid Open in May.

NBA-FIBA BWB selects Aashay Verma& Priyanka of India :
For the first time, two Indian cagers – Aashay Verma and Priyanka Prabhakara – have been selected in a 67-strong international group of boys and girls for the NBA and FIBA’s third annual Basketball without Borders (BWB) Global Camp in New Orleans, USA. The camp will be held February 17 to 19 as part of NBA All-Star 2017.
Verma is 7-foot 1-inch tall and plays centre while Prabhakara is a 5-foot 10-inch tall player, who hails from Kerala.
