    1). KMC Ties up with UK to make Kolkata a Green City:

    ·        Kolkata Municipal Corporation and the British Government jointly launched a roadmap to make Kolkata ”low-carbon and Climate Resilient”
    ·        The roadmap plans to reduce carbon emissions, create one million Green Jobs and attract investment in multiple sectors

    2). President promulgated Enemy Property (Amendment and Validation) Ordinance, 2016:
    ·        PresidentPranab Mukherjee promulgated the Enemy Property Ordinance 2016 to make amendments to theEnemy Property Act, 1968.
    ·        It will help in dealing with the loopholes of the Enemy Property act, 1968 and ensure that the enemy properties that have been bested in the custodian remain so and they do not revert back to the enemy subject or enemy firm.
    3). Haryana child sex ratio rises by over 5%:
    ·        Haryana CMManohar lal Khattar said child sex ratio showed mark improvement, increasing to 889 girls per 1000 boys in 2015.This marks over a 5% increase from 2014’s figure of 846 girls per 1000 boys
    ·        Attending the‘Sashakt Beti Sashakt Bharat”march, he added that efforts are towards increasing child sex ratio to above 900.

    4). EU set on deal with India on migration and mobility
    ·        The European Union is hopeful of sealing a deal on migration with India soon, even as the chief trade negotiators from the two sides are set to meet on January 18 to discuss the contentious Broad based Trade and Investment Agreement (BTIA).
    ·        Additionally, I would like to underline that we established a dialogue on migration and mobility with India.
    ·        This is separate from the free trade agreement (FTA),” EU Ambassador to India Tomasz Kozlowski on being asked about India’s demand for greater access in EU markets for its professionals.
    5). Jallikattu in T.N., bullock cart race in Maharashtra cleared

    ·        The Centre issued a notification to permit Jallikattu, Tamil Nadu’s traditional bull-taming sport, ahead of the Pongal festival.
    ·        The notification overturns a 2011 notification that prohibited the exhibition or training of bulls, and some other animals, as performing animals. The Supreme Court had in 2014 upheld the 2011 government order.
    ·        The present order permits Jallikattu and bullock cart races in Maharashtra, etc. despite Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi reportedly advising the government against revoking the ban in view of the Supreme Court’s ruling.
    6). Mysore to get India’s 1st River Gallery:
    ·         The National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) in association with the State Tourism Department
    ·        It will establish a new tourism gallery about the river Cauvery in Mysore, the first river gallery in India.
    ·        It will focus on the river’s origin ,importance and history, environmental threats it faces and its impact on the farmers lives
    7). French Soldiers to march down Rajpath on Republic Day 2016:
    ·        The French Soldiers will march down the Rajpath on republic day along with Indian Troops in the presence of PresidentFrancois Hollande
    ·        This is the first time that a foreign army will participate in the 26th January Parade Since 1950. Hollande is the Chief Guest for 26 January 2016 Celebrations
    8). Thermal Power companies to transport fly ash free of cost to road construction site in Odisha:
    ·        Thermal Power companies in Odisha will now have to transport fly ash free of cost to road construction site located within 100 kms perimeter of their plant
    ·        The decision in this regard was taken at the joint meeting between NTPC and State Pollution Control Board at Bhubaneswar.
    9). 92-Yr-old British steam engine to resume service:

    ·        The 92 year old British steam engine,the Flying Scotsmanhas returned to the tracks after a decade.
    ·        The train retired from commercial services in 1963 and was later bought by the National Railway Museum.
    ·        It was also the first locomotive to cross the 100 mph speed mark.

    10).Pushan Mahapatra Appointed as SBI General Insurance MD, CEO

    ·        SBI General Insurance has appointedPushan Mahapatra as its new managing director and chief executive officer.
    ·        SBI General Insurance is a joint venture betweenState Bank of India and Insurance Australia Group and the post was vacated after Bhaskar J Sharma retired on December 31, 2015.
    11). Bhanumurthy is the new COO of Wipro:

    ·        It has elevated company veteran Bhanumurthy B. M. as the President and Chief Operating Officer and also appointed another senior leader G. K. Prasanna as the head of a newly formed created unit, Marketing, Innovations and Technology (MIT).
    ·        These announcements were made by newly appointedCEO Abid Ali Neemuchwala; the changes will be effective from February 1, 2016.
    12). Airtel appoints Rakesh Bharti Mittal non-executive director
    ·        Bharti Airtel named Rakesh Bharti Mittal as non-executive director in place of Rajan Bharti Mittal.
    ·        Rajan Bharti Mittal quit his position effective January 7, 2016.
    ·        Both Rakesh and Rajan are vice-chairmen of Bharti Enterprises, of which Airtel is a group company

    BANKING AND ECONOMY:

    13).Banks may put 3-lakh cr of bad loans on the block in 2017: Arcil 

    ·        Once the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Bill is passed, the sale of bad loans to asset reconstruction companies (ARCs) could improve substantially to 30-35 per cent of the loans put on the block by banks and financial institutions from the current 10-15 per cent, according to a top Arcil official.
    ·        The Bill, introduced by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the Lok Sabha on December 31, seeks to promote entrepreneurship and the availability of credit.
    14). India to grow at 7.8% this year: World Bank
    ·        India is projected to grow by a robust 7.8% this year and 7.9% in the next two years, the World Bank forecast said., The World Bank estimates that China grew at an estimated 6.9% in 2015 (0.3% less than its June projection)

    14). Facebook messenger app crosses 800 million users
    ·        The number of people using Facebook messenger application has crossed800 million, taking the lead as the fastest growing social networking site of 2015.
    ·        In 2014, the number of users of Facebook Messenger was over550 million.
    ·        Facebook was the top Smartphone messenger application which had more than 126 million average unique users each month.
    ·         It was the second most popular iOS app with 10 billion photos being shared among users, according to a study by global research firm Nielsen.

    15). Microsoft to launch SIM cards for Win 10 devices:

    ·        Microsoft developing its own SIM cards for devices running the Windows 10 operating system,
    ·        The new service will help in connecting devices to various mobile net work operators without a contract.
    ·        Microsoft has launched a mobile application called ‘Cellular Data’that allows users to buy mobile data.

    16). Scientists develop material that stores Sunlight:
    ·        A team of researchers from the MIT manufactured a new transparent polymer film like material that can store sunlight which can be used sometime later.
    ·        The team usedazobenzene molecules, which has the capability to enter into charged state once exposed to sunlight, then it can be triggered using specific conditions to produce sunlight

    ·        Tech giant Apple acquired US-based artificial intelligence startup Emotient.It uses artificial intelligence technology forreading people’s emotion by analyzing their facial expressions

    18). Maruti to unveil new compact SUV Vitara Brezza at Auto Expo:

    ·        Country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India will unveil its new compact SUV ‘Vitara Brezza’ at the upcoming Delhi Auto Expo.
    ·        The Vitara Brezza will compete with the likes of Ford EcoSport, Mahindra TUV300, besides being pitched against Renault Duster and Hyundai Creta which are priced in the range of Rs. 6.79 lakh to Rs. 13.77 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
    ·        The 2016 Auto Expo will be held from February 5-9.

    19). Iran severs all commercial ties with Saudi Arabia:

    20). ‘Mein Kampf’ published in Germany for first time since WWII

    ·        A German historical institute is launching an annotated edition of “Mein Kampf,”the first version of Adolf Hitler’s notorious manifesto to be published in Germany since the end of World War II.
    ·        Bavaria’s state Finance Ministry had previously prevented the book’s publication, but its copyright expired 70 years after the Nazi leader’s death.

    ·        Germany’s Education Minister that the new version being launched in Munich would help debunk myths surrounding the work.
