    One Rank One Pension (OROP)

    1).One Rank One Pension (OROP) means provision of same pension for same rank and for the same length of service irrespective of thedate of retirement

    2). Defence officers who have retired in the same rank and have served for a similar period of time will be paid the same pension

    3).Thedate of retirement has been the basis for determining the amount of pension and benefits ofIndian Armed Forces

    4). A defence personnel who retire early will get lesser pension than the personnel who retires later even if they are of the same rank and having same length of service

    5). So OROP enables the provision of same pension to all the soldiers who retired with same ranks irrespective of their date of retirement

    6). A10 member Parliamentary Panel,Koshyari Committee examined the issue of the grant of OROP to Armed Personnel and submitted its report inDecember 2011 stating the OROP has not been implemented effectively

    7). During theIndian General Elections of 2014, Implementation of OROP scheme became an integral part of promises made by Prime Minsiter CandidateNarendra Modi

    8). Due to the delay in the implementation of the OROP scheme by the present government a group of about55 ex-servicemen who belong to Jalandhar district began theirrelay-hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, demanding the government to announce a date to introduce the OROP policy

    9). On 5thSeptember 2015Union Government announced its acceptance of theOne Rank One Pension, Union Minister of DefenceManohar Parrikar released the following amendments made by the government in the scheme
    ·        The base year is taken as2013for calculation of the OROP and it will be implemented fromJuly 2014
    ·     Ex-servicemen who have takenvoluntary retirementare also eligible for the benefits under the scheme
    ·        Aone-member judicial committee will be set to work out the details of implementation of the OROP which will file a report in six months
    ·        Revision of pension would be done every5 years instead of every 2 years
    ·        Arrears will be paid in4 half-yearlyinstallments

    10).The ex-servicemen who have been on agitation rejected the key details of the decision stating that they are not yet satisfied with the changes announced by the Government

    11). After the Government’s promises to make more amendments in the OROP scheme the protesting Ex-servicemen have dropped the hunger strike
