The Gerund:
     A Gerund is aword that ispartly a Nounandpartly a Verb.
     Example –Swimming is a healthy exercise.

     The wordswimming is both like the Verbswim, by adding ‘ing’ like a verb.Swimmingstands of the action of swimming. It is used as the Subject of the Verb. It does the work of a Noun.

     The wordswimming is both like aVerb and aNoun. In other words, it is a Verb-Noun or a Gerund.

    A Gerund is a Verb Noun; a Participle is a Verbal Adjective.

Use of Gerund:
A.   The Gerund is a king of verb (ending in ‘ing’) which has averbal function as well as anounfunction. It may be theSubject, Complement orObject of a sentenceor theObject of a Preposition.
Example:
1.   Writingis useful. (Subject)
2.   Teach meriding. (Object)
3.   She is fond ofdancing(Object of Preposition)

B.  Gerundsmay also be usedadverbially.
Example: We are goingShopping, fishing, swimming, riding and visiting.

C.  Adjectives and Verbs which are always in combination with a Preposition (fond of, interested in, object to,etc)must be followed by a Gerund and not by an Infinitive.
 Example:
1.   He is fond ofplaying scrabble.
2.   He is addicted tosmoking
3.   He is interested inhelping the poor.

Exercise- Underline the Gerunds in the following sentences:

1.) Painting is a good art.
Explanation: Here, the word ‘painting’ ends with ‘ing’. So painting is considered to be the Gerunds.
Answer:Paintingis a good art.

2.) Reading the Gita has become my habit.
Explanation: Here, the word ‘reading’ ends with ‘ing.So reading is considered to be the Gerunds.
Answer:Reading theGitahas become mu habit.

3.) I love teaching the boys.
Explanation: Here, the word ‘teaching’ ends with ‘ing.So teaching is considered to be the Gerunds.
Answer: I loveteachingthe boys.

4.) I do not know dancing.
Explanation: Here, the word ‘dancing’ ends with ‘ing’. So dancing is considered to be the Gerunds.
Answer: I do not knowdancing.

5.) We stopped talking.
Explanation: Here, the word ‘talking’ ends with‘ing’.So talking is considered to be the Gerunds.
Answer: We stoppedtalking.

6.) Our aim is passing the examination.
Explanation: Here, the word ‘passing’ ends with‘ing’. So passing is considered to be the Gerunds.

7.) One of Mohan’s hobbies is singing.
