Commission approves modern animal-free testing for drugs:

  • In a step that would spare animals from suffering due to drug experiments, the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission has approved modern, animal-free tests for drug manufacturers.
  • In the 2018 edition of Indian Pharmacopoeia, that provides guidelines on tests for drugs manufactured and marketed in India, the IPC has replaced the pyrogen test carried out on rabbits and the abnormal toxicity test carried out on guinea pigs and mice with tests that can be done in test tubes.

1 lakh incentive to SC, ST students in Bihar:

  • The Bihar Cabinet on Tuesday announced a Rs1 lakh encouragement incentive for Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe students who clear the UPSC preliminary test.
  • The Cabinet also decided to provide Rs1,000 to each SC/ST student as hostel incentive and free supply of 15 kg foodgrain to the hostels.
  • “The Cabinet approved the decision to give Rs1 lakh and Rs 50,000 as encouragement incentive to those SC/ST students who clear the UPSC and the BPSC tests,” Chief Secretary Anjani Kumar Singh said. The Cabinet also approved 16 decisions of different departments on Tuesday.

SC slams Centre for showing “sheer contempt of court” by not framing Cauvery scheme:

  • The Supreme Court on Tuesday rapped the Central government for showing “sheer contempt of court” by not framing a Cauvery draft scheme but adjourned the case to May 14, after the Karnataka Assembly elections on May 12 and before the counting of votes on May 15.
  • Attorney General K.K. Venugopal asked a Bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra for 10 days time to add the “finishing touch” to its draft scheme and get the nod of the Union Cabinet.

  • Saudi women will be allowed to start driving in the kingdom from June 24, the General Department of Traffic Director General Mohammed Bassami.

First Integrated Smart Cities Control Centre Launched In MP:

  • Madhya Pradesh State Government launched India’s first Integrated Control and Command Centre (ICCC) for all seven smart cities of the state in Bhopal.

Maharashtra Govt to Give Rs 3-Per-Litre Subsidy to Milk Producers:

  • On May 8, 2018, Maharashtra State Cabinet decided to provide Rs 3 subsidy for every litre of milk to the co-operative and private producers to manufacture milk powder.
  • This decision is aimed at encouraging production of milk powder from surplus milk.
  • It will further help balance the demand-and-supply of milk and producers in Maharashtra will get Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs 27 per litre.

Andhra CM launches NCBN app to implement effective governance:

  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu launched the official ‘NCBN’ (Nara Chandrababu Naidu) App in the Collector’s conference held at Amravati.
  • The ‘NCBN’ (Nara Chandrababu Naidu) App has been launched to implement effective governance in Andhra Pradesh.
  • The app will notify people in real-time with news updates. It will be a direct platform for the common people to interact with the government.
  • The NCBN app is available at present on Android and Apple app stores for download.

  • Australian actress Cate Blanchett is the President of the Jury for the Main competition.
  • The Official festival poster features Jean-Paul Belmondo and Anna Karina from Jean-Luc Godard’s 1965 film Pierrot le Fou.
  • Out of the 21 films in contention, only 3 films have female directors. The 2018 Cannes Film festival will open with ‘Everybody Knows’, a psychological thriller movie.

Nikol Pashinyan becomes Prime Minister of Armenia:

  • Armenia’s parliament elected Nikol Pashinyan as new Prime Minister in a 59-42 vote. His election comes after Serzh Sargsyan’s resignation as Prime minister of Armenia recently.
  • Nikol Pashinyan is 42 years old. He is the leader of Civil Contract party. He is a former newspaper editor.

Google Appoints Nitin Bawankule as the Country Head For Google Cloud India:

  • Google said that, it has appointed Nitin Bawankule as the country head for Google Cloud India.3
  • Nitin Bawankule has been a part of Google’s India operations for more than six years. He will report to Google Cloud Managing Director (Asia Pacific) Rick Harshman.

Panasonic India appoints Manish Misra as chief innovation officer:

  • Panasonic India, a technology and innovation firm, has appointed Manish Misra as the Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) of its India business.
  • Manish Misra will be responsible for the strategic development of innovation and technology and will lead Panasonic’s innovation hub in India.

3rd edition of UNPCAP held in New Delhi:

  • 3rd edition of the United Nations Peacekeeping Course for African Partners (UNPCAP) was inaugurated in New Delhi on May 7, 2018.
  • The course in geared to build and enhance the capacity of the African Troop Contributing Countries to the UN.
  • It is being conducted by the Centre for United Nations Peacekeeping in India (CUNPK) in partnership with the US.

India Slips to 6th Spot In Biz Optimism Index: Thornton

  • As per Grant Thornton’s quarterly global business survey released on May 8, 2018, India has slipped to the 6th position globally in the business optimism index for the first quarter of 2018.

Sachin Tendulkar, Anurag Thakur launch ‘Khel Mahakumbh’

  • Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Anurag Thakur and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar launched ‘Star Khel Mahakumbh’ in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, in the presence of 1500 athletes.

Arun Bhardwaj will head the Centre of Excellence for Cricket:

  • Noted coach and umpire Arun Bhardwaj will head the Centre of Excellence. Known for his sound knowledge of the game, Bhardwaj, who calls himself a “student” of the game, is a retired employee of the Sports Authority of India.

Tim Paine confirmed as Australia’s one-day captain as ODI, T20 squads announced:

  • Tim Paine and Aaron Finch have been appointed as Australia’s new ODI and T20 captains respectively.
  • Tim Paine will lead the ODI side in the UK in the absence of banned former captain Steve Smith. Aaron Finch has been appointed as his one-day deputy captain for the five-match series.
