India extends over 60 million dollar line of credit to Comoros for Energy and Maritime Defence Cooperation

  • India extend a Line of Credit of over 60 million US Dollars to Comoros in the field of energy and maritime defence cooperation.
  • Both the countries have signed some important agreements including cooperation in defence and energy sectors.
  • India will extend a Line of Credit of over 41.6 million US Dollars for setting up of 18 MW Power Plant in Moroni and another 20 million US Dollars for the procurement of High-Speed Interceptor Boats.
  • The Vice President was also conferred ‘The Order of the Green Crescent’, the highest Civilian Honour of Comoros, by AzaliAssoumani, President of Comoros in Moroni.

Railway police website, mobile app launched

  • Union Minister NityanandRai launched a website and a mobile application that will help the railway police in addressing complaints of passengers from across India and crime detection by integrating the criminal database online.
  • The Minister of State for Home Affairs launched the website — www.railways.delhipolice.gov.in — and the mobile app Sahyatri in the presence of Delhi Police Commissioner AmulyaPatnaik and other officials.
  • The database of criminals, including their photographs, active in railways’ jurisdiction all over India would be uploaded on the website.
  • The entire website can only be accessed by authorized Government Railway Police (GRP) officers. The GRP heads of 24 states and one Union Territory have been assigned as super admin and they have been provided with separate user IDs and passwords.

10th National Cultural Festival to be held in Madhya Pradesh

  • 10th National Cultural Festival begins in Madhya Pradesh
  • 10th edition of the RashtriyaSanskritiMahotsav – National Cultural Festival is being organized by the Union Ministry of Culture from 14th to 21st of October under the ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ campaign.
  • Governor LaljiTandon and Union Minister of State for Culture and Tourism Prahlad Singh Patel will be present at the inaugural ceremony of the Festival being held in Jabalpur
  • The National Cultural festival will display diverse forms of folk, art and culture of 22 states. The concept of National Cultural Festival was conceived in the year 2015. So far, the Ministry of Culture has organized nine such Festivals.
  • The festival is being organized in Madhya Pradesh for the second time. This time the festival will be held in Sagar and Rewa apart from Jabalpur.

  • The Life Insurance Council launches an equivalent of ‘Mutual Funds SahiHai’ announced a mass media campaign with the slogan ‘SabsePehle Life Insurance’ with an aim to increase life insurance awareness and helping the masses understand the product’s true purpose.
  • Insurance penetration in India in continues to be at 3.69%, one of the lowest across the world, according to the annual report by Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai). Between FY 2014-15 to 2016-17, life insurance penetration in the country was at a flat 2.7%.
  • The complex nature of the product with a host of terms and conditions is one of the biggest reasons why the product is not bought in huge numbers. However, this campaign is a significant step towards increasing life insurance awareness.

BoB, BNP Paribas arms to merge mutual fund biz

  • Baroda Asset Management India, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bank of Baroda and BNP Paribas Asset Management India, a subsidiary of BNP Paribas Asset Management Asia (BNPP AM), will merge their mutual fund business, subject to regulatory approvals.
  • Both Bank of Baroda and BNP Paribas Asset Management Asia have entered into a binding agreement to merge their business which involves no cash consideration.
  • Post completion of merger, BoB will hold 50.1 per cent stake in the merged asset management company and the rest will be held by BNP Paribas Asset Management.
  • BoB will own 50.7 per cent of the paid-up capital of the merged entity while BNPP AM will have 49.3 per cent.

Bangladesh become 2nd fastest growing economy in South Asia

  • According to World Bank report ‘South Asia Economic Focus, Making (De) Centralization Work’Bangladesh has become the second-fastest growing economy in South Asia after Bhutan.
  • World bankprojected GDP growth rate from moderate to 7.2 per cent this fiscal year and 7.3 per cent in 2020 in Bangladesh.
  • World Bank stated that India’s growth rate is projected to fall to 6 per cent this fiscal. However the country was expected to gradually recover to 6.9 per cent in 2021 and 7.2 per cent in 2022.
  • Growth in South Asia is projected to fall to 5.9 per cent in 2019, down 1.1 percentage points from April 2019 estimates

Chipko Movement Founder Chandi Prasad Bhatt to Get Congress’ Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration

  • Noted environmentalist and social activist Chandi Prasad Bhatt has been awarded the Indira Gandhi award for national integration for the years 2017 and 2018.
  • The award was instituted by the Congress in the memory of the former prime minister and it would be presented on October 31 in a function at JawaharBhawan.
  • The 31st Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration for the year 2017 and 2018 has been awarded to Chandi Prasad Bhatt for his services in promoting and preserving national integration in the country.
  • This award consists of a citation and Rs 10 lakh in cash to be given to the awardee by chairperson Sonia Gandhi, the Congress president. It would be presented on October 31.

Indian-American Abhijit Banerjee along with Esther Duflo& Michael Kremer jointly win Nobel in Economics

  • Indian-American Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer jointly won the 2019 Nobel Economics Prize for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.
  • Banerjee and French-American Duflo both work at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology while Kremer is at Harvard University.
  • Duflo is the second woman and the youngest ever to win the economics prize.
  • The prize includes 9 million-kronor (USD 918,000) cash, a gold medal and a diploma. The winners will equally share the prize money.

  • He was a past president of IPA (2013-2015)

India, Japan to hold joint military exercise from October 19

  • Dharma Guardian, the joint military exercise between India and Japan, will be held at the Counter-Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School Vairengte in Mizoram from October 19 to November 2.
  • A Defence Ministry said that Indian Army and Japanese Ground Self Defence Forces (JGSDF) contingents comprising 25 soldiers each will participate in the exercise with an aim to share experience gained during various counter-terrorism operations.
  • The exercise is an annual training event, which is being held in India since 2018.
  • The scope of the exercise covers platoon-level joint training on counter-terrorism operations in the jungle and urban scenario.

India – Bangladesh Navies Undertake Coordinated Patrol in North Bay of Bengal

  • The second edition of Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT) of the navies of India and Bangladesh commenced in Northern Bay of Bengal.
  • The two-day patrol will be followed by the maiden edition of Bilateral Exercise of the navies of two countries at Visakhapatnam between October 12-16.
  • The India Bangladesh CORPAT commenced in 2018. The exercise aims at development of mutual communication and sharing of best practices between the two navies.
  • India and Bangladesh have a common territorial boundary of over 4000 km and a maritime boundary. This exercise will add a new dimension to the India- Bangladesh maritime relations.

  • India and Sierra Leone signed six agreements including extending a credit line of 30 million US Dollars for rice cultivation.
  • Vice President Venkaiah Naidu and Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio committed to further strengthening bilateral relations.
  • Naidu on the second leg of his ongoing five-day visit to the West African countries
  • New Delhi has extended concessional lines of credit to Sierra Leone worth USD 123 million in sectors such as agriculture, water, and transmission line.
  • In addition, Sierra Leone has also availed lines of credit worth USD 49.45 million from ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) for projects in solar and telecom sector out of Lines of Credit extended by India to EBID

  • Indian shuttlerLakshyaSenclinched his maiden BWF World Tour title by winning the Dutch Open men’s singles title after beating Yusuke Onodera of Japan in the summit clash in Almere, Netherlands
  • The 18-year-old Indian rallied from a game deficit to defeat his world no. 160 opponent 15-21 21-14 21-15 in a final that lasted 63 minutes.

The first man to ever walk in space passes away

  • Alexei Leonov, the first person to perform a spacewalk,passed away. He was 85.
  • He was the first person to conduct a spacewalk, exiting the capsule during the Voskhod 2 mission.
  • Leonov performed his spacewalk on March 18, 1965 for 12 minutes and 9 seconds.
