UAE unveils ‘golden card’ permanent residency scheme for expats

  • The UAE has launched a permanent residency scheme for expatriates dubbed the ‘Golden Card.
  • The country’s Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubaisaid about 6,800 will benefit from the scheme under the first round of applications.
  • A new “Golden Card” system to grant permanent residency to investors and exceptional doctors, engineers, scientists and artists.

Mumbai most vulnerable to cyberattacks, Delhi, B’luru next

  • Mumbai topped the 15-city list of the most vulnerable cities to cyberattacks in 2019, followed by Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata, Quick Heal Security Labs revealed.
  • The ‘Annual Threat Report 2019’ put Maharashtra, Delhi and West Bengal as the top three states at most risk.
  • The report compiled data from several cyberattacks that took place in 2018 on Windows and Android.

Shadow banking assets fairly small by global standards: Fitch

  • Shadow banking assets as a percentage of total financial assets within the country were at 14.3 per cent, in line with the global percentage of 13.7 per cent, a Fitch reports.
  • The reports pointed out that India’s shadow banking assets were fairly small by international standards, ranking 17th globally at $571.7 billion as of YE17, according to the Financial Stability Board’s (FSB).

Sebi gives nod to mutual funds to invest in exchange traded commodity derivatives with investment limits

  • Markets regulator SEBI allowed the much-awaited mutual fund’s entry into commodity derivative market trading.
  • However, it has not allowed investment in physical goods. Experts feel that asset class will also enter as they will have new avenue for investment, adding that this is positive news for investors.
  • Mutual funds are now allowed to invest in exchange traded commodity derivatives, except those on ‘Sensitive commodities’.
  • Mutual  fund  schemes participating in ETCDs may hold the underlying goods in case of physical settlement of contracts,in  that  case mutual funds shall dispose of such goods from the books of the scheme,at the earliest, not exceeding 30 days from the date of holding of the physical goods

Bank credit to infra sector grows 18.5% in FY19

  • As per RBI data, Bank credit to infrastructure sector grew by 18.5 per cent to 10.55 lakh crore as of 2018-19, the highest since 2012-13 fiscal.
  • Outstanding bank credit to the sector was 8.91 lakh crore as at March 2018.
  • Within infrastructure, bank loans to power sector had increased by 9.5 per cent to 5.69 lakh crore compared to Rs. 5.19 lakh crore in FY18.
  • Roads sector witnessed a credit growth of 12.2 per cent to 1.86 lakh crore as of end-March 2019.
  • Credit to telecommunications and other infrastructure (excluding roads, power and telecom) rose by 36.7 per cent and 53.5 per cent, respectively over FY18.

Indian’s charity in UAE enters Guinness World Records for holding longest iftar

  • A charity run by an Indian in the UAE has entered the Guinness Book of World Records for its hunger relief efforts during the holy month of Ramzan in Abu Dhabi.
  • The charity set the new Guinness World Records for “Longest Line of Hunger Relief Package” in Abu Dhabi.
  • Pehal charitable Trust (PCT) has been founded by Joginder Singh Salaria.

Ruskin Bond launches new memoir titled Coming Round the Mountain on 85th birthday

  • India’s beloved children’s author Ruskin Bond is celebrating his 85th birthday with the release of a new memoir set against the backdrop of the partition. The book titled Coming Round the Mountain, will be released officially by the author at Cambridge bookstores in Mussourie.
  • Coming Round the Mountain is the third installment of Bond’s award-winning memoir series for children that includes Looking for the Rainbow and Till the Clouds Roll By.
  • Now, the third part of the series will deal with Bond’s story as a boy of thirteen during the crucial year of India’s partition.

IAF successfully fires BrahMos air version missile from frontline Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft

  • Indian Air Force successfully fired the BrahMos air version missile from its frontline Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft.
  • The missile, designed and developed by BAPL, weighing 2.5 tonnes, has a range of 290km and speed of Mach 3 making it difficult for the air-defence elements of the enemy to counter it. One Mach is equal to the speed of sound.
  • The Inidan Air Force became the first Air Force in the world to have successfully fired an air launched 2.8 Mach surface attack missile of this category on a sea target on Novemebr 2017. This was the second such live launch of the weapon.
  • The software development of the aircraft was undertaken by the IAF engineers while HAL carried out mechanical and electrical modifications on the aircraft
  • The missile has been developed jointly in collaboration with Russia.

Fifth Smart Cities India Expo inaugurated in New Delhi

  • The 5th Smart Cities India 2019 expo, including Transport India, Solar India, Buildings India and Water India expos, was inaugurated by Durga Shanker Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, at the Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
  • Organised by India Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO) and Exhibitions India Group, the event builds upon Government of India’s ‘Smart Cities Mission’ through a display of a vast array of products and solutions relevant to building smart cities in India.

Koepka returns to world No. 1 with PGA win

  • After successfully defending a major title (again), Brooks Koepka is back atop the Official World Golf Ranking.
  • Koepka teed off at Bethpage ranked No. 3 in the world, but after retaining the Wanamaker Trophy he moved to the top spot even though former world No. 1 Dustin Johnson finished alone in second. It marks the first time Koepka has held the No. 1 ranking since the start of the year.
  • But now it’s Koepka followed by Johnson, with Rose down one spot to No. 3. The rest of the top 10 remained the same after the second major of the year: Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Tiger Woods, Francesco Molinari, Bryson DeChambeau, Xander Schauffele and Rickie Fowler.

Actor Comedian Sammy Shore passes away

  • Sammy Shore, an actor and standup comedian who co-founded the Comedy Store, has died of natural causes.He was 92.
  • Shore began his career doing standup with Shecky Greene. Elvis Presley chose Shore as the opening act for his comeback tour, and the comedian opened for many others, including Tony Orlando, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr., Tom Jones, Ann-Margret, Connie Stevens, Bobby Darin and Glen Campbell.
