Japan Gifts Museum of Peace to Manipur in Memory of Second World War

  • Former adversaries Britain and Japan came together at the inauguration of the Imphal Peace Museum to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Imphal that saw some of the fiercest fighting of World War II at Maibam Lokpa Ching popularly known as Red Hill.
  • The Battle of Imphal is regarded as one of the fiercest battles of World War II in which about 70,000 Japanese soldiers along with the Indian National Army, died in battles with the British-led Allied forces in areas around Imphal and Kohima from March to June 1944.

Self Defence Training for Girls in Schools under Samagra Shiksha

  • Ministry of Human Resource Development launched Samagra Shiksha initiative in 2018-19. As part of this integrated scheme of school education, self-defence training is imparted to girls from class VI to XII.
  • The ministry provides Rs. 3,000 per month for a period of three months per government-run school for the self-defence training and inculcating life skills among girls

Saudi Arabia Becomes First Arab Nation to Get FATF Membership

  • Saudi Arabia has become the first Arab country to be granted full membership of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) following the group’s annual general meeting in the US.
  • Saudi Arabia which had received an invitation from the FATF at the beginning of 2015 to join as an “observer member”, was admitted into the organization after the group’s meeting in Orlando, Florida.
  • The group is responsible for issuing international standards, policies and best practices to combat money laundering, terrorist financing and proliferation.
  • With the kingdom becoming a FATF member, the number of permanent members in the group is now 39.

UAE launches UN-developed anti-money laundering platform

  • The UAE has become the first country in the Gulf to launch a new reporting platform developed by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, UNODC, to curb organised crimes.
  • The UAE’s Financial Intelligence Unit, FIU, launched the new anti-money laundering platform ‘goAML’ , which has been open for registration.
  • More than 900 entities including, banks, insurance companies and money exchange centres, are required to register on the platform and 50 percent of them have already registered.
  • The platform will help the FIU prevent money laundering, financing of terrorism and other illicit financial activities.

RBI launches complaint management system for grievance redressal

  • Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanata Das launched Complaint Management System (CMS) to smoothen its grievance redressal process.
  • The portal will be live on RBI’s website where people will file their complaints against any of the RBI-regulated entities.
  • The system has been equipped with all online features such as SMS/Email notifications, status tracking via unique registration number, receipt of closure advises and filing of appeals, to make the experience user-friendly.
  • The information from CMS can be utilised for undertaking root cause analyses and initiating appropriate corrective action, wherever required.
  • The system can also be used by RBI officials to track the progress of redressal, which will also allow regulatory and supervisory interventions.
  • With the launch of CMS, the processing of complaints received in the offices of Banking Ombudsman (BO) and Consumer Education and Protection Cells (CEPCs) of RBI has been digitalized.

To boost profitability, SBI creates new group to focus on credit-light sectors

  • State Bank of India (SBI) has formed a separate group within its Corporate Accounts Group (CAG) to cater to the non-fund-based requirements of clients in credit-light sectors such as pharmaceuticals, fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) and information technology (IT). This is aimed at boosting its non-interest income.
  • Both the newly created groups – CLG and FIG – have taken off, and have started contributing to the bank’s business growth
  • The focus on non-interest income is with a view to improve the profitability of India’s largest bank without having to allocate capital.
  • The credit-light group (CLG) will focus on generating non-interest income comprising letter of credit/bank guarantee commission, cash management charges, exchange income from forex activities, cross-selling commission, remittances, and collections, among others. It is also responsible for garnering low-cost deposits.
  • Further, a specialised group, Financial and Institutional Group (FIG), to address credit and transactional banking needs of insurance companies, broking firms, banks (private and foreign), and mutual funds has also been created within the CAG.

World Bank approves $147 Million Loan to the Government of Jharkhand for the implementation of Jharkhand Municipal Development Project

  • The Government of India, the Government of Jharkhand and the World Bank, signed a $147 Million Loan Agreement to provide basic urban services to the people of Jharkhand and help improve the management capacity of the urban local bodies (ULBs) in the State.
  • The Jharkhand Municipal Development Project will focus on improving the municipal sector’s capacity to provide basic urban services. It will invest in urban services such as water supply, sewerage, drainage, and urban roads; and strengthen the capacity of the Jharkhand Urban Infrastructure Development Company (JUIDCO) as well as that of the ULBs to carry out reforms in the areas of urban finance and governance.

RBI’s deputy governor Viral Acharya quits six months before his term ends

  • The deputy governor of Reserve Bank of India, Dr. Viral V. Acharya has resigned from his post. He is the youngest deputy governor of RBI. His term was about to end on January 20, 2019
  • Reserve Bank of India has said that Dr. Viral V. Acharya has submitted a letter to the RBI informing that due to unavoidable personal circumstances, he is unable to continue his term as a Deputy Governor of the RBI beyond July 23, 2019.

Prithviraj Kothari becomes National President of Indian Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd

  • Prithviraj Kothari has been appointed as National President of India’s oldest and apex association i.e. India Bullion And Jewellers Association in place of outgoing President MohitBharatiya for the next five years, 2019 to 2024.
  • In the past, Kothari had served as the President of the Bombay Bullion Association (BBA). As a president, he had played a crucial role in promoting BBA in the international markets.

Former General Mohamed Ould Ghazouani Wins Presidential Election of Mauritania

  • Mohamed Ould Ghazouani has won Mauritiania’s presidential election with an absolute majority.
  • It was the first time Mauritanians voted to elect a successor to a democratically elected president in the West African.
  • Mohamed Ould Ghazouani(aged 62) of Union for the Republic (UPR) party won the presidential election with 52% votes. He will succeed Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.

QuDongyu becomes first Chinese national to head UN food and agriculture agency

  • China’s agricultural deputy minister, QuDongyu elected as the new director general of the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) at Rome, Italy.
  • He won 108 votes, followed by Catherine Geslain-Laneelle of France (the first woman to run for the post, a former head of the European Food Safety Authority)with 71 votes and Georgia’s Davit Kirvalidze(a former agriculture minister) with 12 votes in the first round of voting.

Maruti Suzuki partners Bank of Baroda for vehicle finance

  • Marut iSuzuki has joined hands with Bank of Baroda to support dealer inventory financing and customer auto loans. The company has signed a memorandum of understanding with Bank of Baroda, under which the bank will become a preferred financier.
  • The partnership with Bank of Baroda will allow Maruti Suzuki to provide more comprehensive financing opportunities for dealers as well as customers.
  • The dealer inventory financing will be done as per Bank of Baroda’s existing product program of supply chain finance.

  • Indian women’s hockey team won the FIH Women’s Series Finals after defeating hosts Japan 3-1 in the Final held at the Hiroshima Hockey Stadium
  • The Indian women’s team has already secured its place in the final round of the 2020 Olympics qualifiers after entering the final of this tournament

Australia’s Ashleigh Bartybecomes world’s number one female tennis player

  • Australian tennis player Ashleigh Barty has clinched the top spot in the world tennis rankings after beating Germany’s Julia Gorges 6-3, 7-5, in the final of the Nature Valley Classic in Birmingham.
  • She becomes the second Australian woman to achieve No. 1 following EvonneGoolagongCawley on April 26, 1976 and the 27th woman overall

International Olympic Committee opens new headquarters in Switzerland

  • The International Olympic Committee(IOC) formally opened its new headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerlandexactly 125 years after the Olympic Games were revived.
  • The new headquarters costs 145 million US Dollars
  • IOC President Thomas Bach has inaugurated the building

Rajasthan BJP Chief Madan LalSaini Passes Away

  • President of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Rajasthan unit Madan Lal Saini has passed away.
  • Saini, also a Rajya Sabha MP, was 75.
