World Cancer Day – Feb 4:

  • World Cancer Day is observed annually on February 4 to raise worldwide awareness, improving education and catalysing personal, collective and government action.
  • It is an initiative of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC).
  • The theme of this year’s World Cancer Day is “Close the Care Gap”.
  • The theme is all about raising awareness of the equity gap that affects almost everyone, in high as well as low- and middle-income countries, and is costing lives.
  • World Cancer Day was born on the 4 February 2000 at the World Summit Against Cancer for the New Millennium in Paris.
  • The Paris Charter aims to promote research, prevent cancer, improve patient services, raise awareness and mobilise the global community to make progress against cancer, and includes the adoption of World Cancer Day.

International Day of Human Fraternity- Feb 4:

  • The ‘International Day of Human Fraternity’ is celebrated across the world on 4th February. The first International Day of Human Fraternity was held in 2021.
  • The day aims to raise awareness about different cultures and religions, or beliefs, and the promotion of tolerance; and to educate people that tolerance, pluralistic tradition, mutual respect, and the diversity of religions and beliefs promote human fraternity.
  • The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution to declare 4 February as International Day of Human Fraternity on 21 December 2020.
  • The Day is a part of the ‘World Interfaith Harmony Week’, observed during the first week of February (1 to 7), as proclaimed by UN General Assembly in 2010.

PM to kickstart 50th Anniversary Celebrations of ICRISAT and inaugurate two research facilities:

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will visit Hyderabad on 5th February 2022.
  • Prime Minister will visit the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) campus in Patancheru, Hyderabad and kickstart the 50th Anniversary celebrations of ICRISAT.
  • The 216-feet tall Statue of Equality commemorates the 11th century Bhakti Saint Sri Ramanujacharya, who promoted the idea of equality in all aspects of living including faith, caste and creed.
  • The Statue is made of ‘panchaloha’, a combination of five metals: gold, silver, copper, brass, and zync and is among one of the tallest metallic statues in sitting position, in the world.
  • It is mounted on a 54-ft high base building, named ‘Bhadra Vedi’, has floors devoted for a Vedic digital library and research centre, ancient Indian texts, a theatre, an educational gallery detailing many works of Sri Ramanujacharya.
  • Earlier during the visit, Prime Minister will kickstart the 50th Anniversary celebrations of ICRISAT.

Blue Economy is the sixth dimension of Government of India’s Vision of New India by 2030:

  • Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology; Minister of State (Independent Charge) Earth Sciences; MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh, the Government of India’s Vision of New India by 2030, the Blue Economy as the sixth dimension of its vision.
  • 150 Cr has been provisioned during 2021-22 under Deep Ocean Mission.
  • Draft Policy document on Blue Economy has been prepared by MoES taking into consideration the reports of the expert working groups which emphasizes holistic development and growth of India’s Blue Economy.
  • The following seven thematic areas or pillars are identified:
  • National accounting framework for the blue economy and ocean governance.
  • Coastal Marine Spatial Planning and Tourism.
  • Marine fisheries, aquaculture, and fish processing.
  • Manufacturing, Emerging industries, trade, technology, services, and skill development.
  • Logistics, infrastructure and shipping, including trans-shipments.
  • Coastal and deep-sea mining and offshore energy.
  • Security, strategic dimensions, and international engagement

Beijing Winter Olympics: DD Sports will not telecast opening and closing ceremonies:

  • DD Sports channel will not telecast live the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics being held in Beijing, China.
  • External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, it is regrettable that China has chosen to politicize the Winter Olympics.
  • The Charge de Affairs of the Indian Embassy in Beijing will not attend the opening or closing ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics.
  • Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Sekhar Vempati, consequent to the announcement by the Ministry of External Affairs, DD Sports channel will not telecast live the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics.

Sebi overhauls high-power advisory committee on settlement orders

  • Capital markets regulator Sebi has restructured its four member high-power advisory committee on settlement orders and compounding of offences.
  • The committee will now be chaired by Jai Narayan Patel, former chief justice of Calcutta High Court.
  • The panel was earlier headed by Vijay C Daga, retired judge of the High Court of Bombay.
  • The panel will work as per the Settlement Proceedings Regulations, specified by the regulator.
  • Rejigging its committee, Sebi has listed M S Sahoo, former chairperson at Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India, and Poornima Advani, ex-chairperson of National Commission for Women as new inductees.
  • P K Malhotra, former law secretary in the Ministry of Law & Justice, Government of India, will continue as a member of the committee.
  • Under the settlement mechanism, an alleged wrongdoer can settle a pending case with the regulator without admission or denial of guilt by paying a settlement fee.
  • Under the new rules, the timeline for filing settlement applications has been cut to just 60 days from the current 180 days.
  • Further, the time period for submission of revised settlement terms form, after the Internal Committee (IC), has been rationalized to 15 days.
  • The current rule allows 10 days plus additional 20 days.

Edelweiss General Insurance launches AI voice bot for automated motor claims

  • Edelweiss General Insurance (EGI), has launched an AI Voice Bot to enable its customers intimate insurance motor claims in a convenient and seamless manner.
  • This end-to-end AI Voice Bot is the first in the General insurance industry in India, and is powered by ai platform.
  • This conversational AI Voice Bot, available in Hindi, English and Hinglish, will enable real time registration of claims, 24-7.
  • It has been introduced for garage owners and will be extended to all customers.
  • The bot will assist EGI’s garage representatives in easier, faster and hassle-free registration of claims.

RBI warns against forex trading on unauthorized Platforms:

  • RBI has noticed a few misleading advertisements of unauthorized Electronic Trading Platforms (ETPs) offering forex trading facilities to Indian residents.
  • It added that such entities are also personally contacting people and luring them with promises of disproportionate returns.
  • Reserve Bank said there have been reports of frauds committed by such unauthorized ETPs where many residents have lost money.
  • Forex transactions must be undertaken only with authorized entities, RBI said a list of authorized persons and ETPs is available on its website along with a set of FAQs on forex transactions.
  • The residents undertaking forex transactions for illegal purposes or with unauthorized entities shall be liable for penal action under the Foreign Exchange Management Act, 1999.

Govt appoints former civil servant Ravi Mittal as new chairperson of IBBI

  • As per the notification issued by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, the former secretary, Department of Sports, Ravi Mittal has been appointed as the Chairman of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) for a term of five years or till he attains 65 years of age, whichever is early.
  • Mittal will succeed MS Sahoo, the first chairman of the IBBI who retired on September 30, 2021, after completing a five-year term.
  • Navrang Saini, a whole-time member of the IBBI, was given additional charge as the chairman until March 5.

About Ravi Mittal :

  • Ravi Mittal is a 1986 batch IAS officer from Bihar cadre.
  • Mittal had also worked as the secretary in the department of information and broadcasting, and as the special secretary in the department of financial services.
  • He was appointed secretary at the Union ministry of youth affairs and sports in April 2020, replacing Radhey Shyam Julaniya.
  • In June 2021, Mittal took additional charge as secretary, Union ministry of skills development and entrepreneurship.

Former RBI governor Urjit Patel resigns as independent director of Britannia Industries Limited

  • Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Urjit Patel has resigned from the post of non-executive and independent director of Britannia Industries Limited.
  • He also confirmed that there was no other reason other than what he has mentioned for the resignation.

About Urjit Patel :

  • Urjit Patel was born in Nairobi on 28 October 1963.
  • He formerly served as the 24th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and also Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India, looking after monetary policy, economic research, financial markets, statistics and information management.
  • Patel was recently appointed vice president for investment operations in South Asia at the Beijing-based Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) effective from 1 February, 2022.
  • Prior to public service, he had worked in the private sector for about fifteen years.
  • Patel started his professional career at the International Monetary Fund.
  • He has also been a consultant to the center’s finance ministry.
  • He had joined Britannia in March 2021 as an additional director of the company in the category of non-executive and independent director, and his appointment was for a period of five years, which would have ended in 2026.

Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Neeraj Chopra nominated for Laureus World Sports Awards

  • Neeraj Chopra, India’s first-ever winner of an Olympic athletics gold medal, has been selected as one of the six Nominees for the 2022 Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award.
  • The other five sportspersons who have been nominated for the award are Australian Open runner-up Daniil Medvedev, British tennis star Emma Raducanu, Barcelona and Spain footballer Pedri, Venezuelan athlete Yulimar Rojas and Australian swimmer Ariarne Titmus.
  • He is only the third Indian athlete to be nominated for the Laureus Award after wrestler Vinesh Phogat in 2019 and cricket maestro Sachin Tendulkar, who won the Laureus Sporting Moment Award 2000-2020.
  • A panel of over 1,300 sports journalists and broadcasters globally selected the nominees in seven categories.
  • The winners will be revealed in April following a vote by the Laureus World Sports Academy, made up of 71 sporting greats.

  • Neeraj Chopra born on 24 December 1997 in Haryana.
  • Chopra is the first track and field athlete to win a gold medal for India at the Olympics.
  • He participated in the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2018 Asian Games, serving as the flag-bearer in the latter and winning gold medals in both.

RBI cancels license of Nashik based Independence Co-operative Bank Limited

  • Reserve Bank of India has canceled the license of Independence Co-operative Bank Ltd., Nashik, Maharashtra with effect from the close of business on February 03, 2022.

The RBI has canceled the license of the bank as:

  • The bank does not have adequate capital and earning prospects.
  • As such, it does not comply with the provisions of Section 11(1) and Section 22 (3) (d) read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
  • The bank has failed to comply with the requirements of Sections 22(3) (a), 22 (3) (b), 22(3)(c), 22(3) (d) and 22(3)(e) read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949
  • The continuance of the bank is prejudicial to the interests of its depositors
  • The bank with its present financial position would be unable to pay its present depositors in full
  • Public interest would be adversely affected if the bank is allowed to carry on its banking business any further.
  • On liquidation, every depositor would be entitled to receive deposit insurance claim amount of his/her deposits up to a monetary ceiling of 5,00,000/- (Rupees Five lakh only) from Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) subject to the provisions of the DICGC Act, 1961.
  • As per the data submitted by the bank, more than 99% of the depositors are entitled to receive the full amount of their deposits from DICGC.
  • As on January 27, 2022, DICGC has disbursed ₹36 crore of the total insured deposits under the provisions of Section 18A of the DICGC Act,1961 based on the willingness received from the concerned depositors of the bank.

BDL signs contract for supply of Konkurs-M Anti-Tank Missiles to Indian Army

  • Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Indian Army have signed a contract worth Rs 3,131.82 crore for manufacture and supply of Konkurs M Anti-Tank Guided Missiles to the Indian Army.
  • The contract will be executed over the next three years.
  • Konkurs-M is being manufactured by BDL under a license agreement with a Russian OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer).

About Konkurs-M :

  • Konkurs-M is a second generation, mechanized infantry anti-tank guided missile to destroy armored vehicles equipped with explosive reactive armour.
  • The missile can be launched either from a BMP-II tank or from a ground launcher.
  • It has a range between 75 to 4,000 metres with a flight time of 19 seconds.
  • The order book position of BDL stands at Rs 11,400 crore net.
  • As a part of its global outreach, BDL is also offering Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missiles, Nag, Milan-2T, and Amogha, in addition to Konkurs M, for export.

SBI-NCF-IGNCA sign MoU for Development of Atmanirbhar Bharat Centre for Design at Red Fort, Delhi

  • A tripartite Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the State Bank of India, Indira Gandhi Centre for the Arts, and National Culture Fund for Development of Atmanirbhar Bharat Centre for Design at L1 Barrack, Red Fort, Delhi.
  • Atmanirbhar Bharat Centre of Design (ABCD), project aims to highlight, promote and celebrate the products that have the Geographical Indication sign, as it signifies a specific geographic origin infused with unique features of that region.
  • It will also provide a collaborative space between the karigars and the designers, to enable design interventions in sync with an exclusive and niche market for the artifacts produced at the Red Fort.
  • The ABCD project is being implemented by IGNCA, an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Culture.
  • Ministry of Culture through National Culture Fund, a trust notified on 28th November, 1996 under charitable Endowments Acts, 1890 has a primary mandate to nurture & establish partnerships in the field of heritage and mobilize resources for the restoration and protection of tangible and intangible heritage.
  • All contributions to NCF are given 100% tax exemption under Section 80G (2) of the Income Tax Act of 1961.
  • NCF approached State Bank of India to support the project, SBI has agreed to sponsor the project under CSR with a contribution of 10 crore for the implementation of ABCD Project.

Exim Bank signs $500-million loan agreement with Sri Lanka

  • The Export Import Bank (EXIM) of India and the Government of Sri Lanka signed a USD 500 million Line of Credit (LoC) Agreement, to purchase petroleum products.
  • The Line of Credit spans a year, and comes at a “nominal” interest rate, of under 2%.
  • This critical support comes in the wake of a virtual meeting between the External Affairs Minister of India S. Jaishankar and Sri Lanka’s Minister of Finance Basil Rajapaksa, held on January 15,2022.
  • On January 13, 2022, India extended a $400 million currency swap to Sri Lanka, while also deferring another $500 million due for settlement to the Asian Clearing Union (ACU), to help the island nation cope with its dollar crunch.

Indian Navy’s 5th Scorpène Submarine Vagir Begins Sea Trials

  • The fifth submarine of Project 75, Yard 11879, Indian Navy’s Kalvari class commenced her sea trials on 01 February 2022.
  • The submarine was launched in November 2020 from the Kanhoji Angre Wet Basin of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (xMDL), Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • The submarine would be named Vagir, after commissioning & it was designed with “superior stealth features” like advanced acoustic absorption techniques.
  • It will now undergo extensive system, machinery, and weapons trials at sea before it is commissioned.
  • The submarine was named after INS Vagir, a Russian Vela-class submarine that served in the Navy from 1973 to 2001.
  • The six Kalvari-class submarines, designed by French company DCNS, are being built in India as part of the Indian Navy’s Project-75.
  • These submarines can undertake missions like anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying, and area surveillance.
  • Two submarines of the ongoing Project-75 Scorpene programme at MDL – Kalvari and Khanderi – have been commissioned into the Indian Navy.
  • The third submarine, Karanj, is in the last phase of rigorous sea trials.
  • The fourth Scorpene, Vela, has started sea trials, while the sixth and last submarine, Vagsheer, is being readied.

SpaceX Launches U.S. Intelligence Satellite NROL-87

  • A classified satellite NROL-87 for the S. the National Reconnaissance Office was launched into space by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, US.
  • This was SpaceX’s fifth overall launch of 2022.
  • The mission marked the company’s 143rd orbital launch overall and its 105th booster landing.
  • The NRO only described the NROL-87 satellite as a “national security payload.
  • Its launch was one of three awarded by the Air Force to SpaceX in 2019 for a combined fixed price of USD 297 million.
  • The other two NRO launches were namely NROL-82 from Vandenberg and NROL-111 from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in
  • NROL-87 is designed, built, and operated by the NRO to support its overhead reconnaissance mission.
  • NROL-87, the first satellite launched by the NRO in 2022, is the third time the agency has used a Falcon 9 rocket.

  2. The NRO has launched 16 other satellites over the past two years.

IISc commissions one of India’s most powerful supercomputers – Param Pravega

  • The Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) has installed and commissioned Param Pravega, one of the most powerful supercomputers in India, and the largest in an Indian academic institution, under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM).
  • The system is expected to power diverse research and educational pursuits. It has a total supercomputing capacity of 3.3 petaflops (1 petaflop equals a quadrillion, or 1015 operations per second).
  • It has been designed by the Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC).
  • A majority of the components used to build this system have been manufactured and assembled within India, along with an indigenous software stack developed by C-DAC.

  • NSM is steered jointly by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and implemented by C-DAC and IISc.
  • The Mission has supported the deployment of 10 supercomputer systems so far at IISc., in IITs, IISER Pune, JNCASR, NABI-Mohali and C-DAC, with a cumulative computing power of 17 petaflops.
  • These systems have greatly helped faculty members and students carry out major R&D activities, including developing platforms for genomics and drug discovery, studying urban environmental issues, establishing flood warning and prediction systems, and optimising telecom networks.

About Param Pravega system :

  • The Param Pravega system at IISc. is a mix of heterogeneous nodes, with Intel Xeon Cascade Lake processors for the CPU nodes and NVIDIA Tesla V100 cards on the GPU nodes.
  • The hardware consists of an ATOS BullSequana XH2000 series system, with a comprehensive peak compute power of 3 petaflops.
  • The software stack on top of the hardware is provided and supported by C-DAC.
  • The machine hosts an array of program development tools, utilities, and libraries for developing and executing High Performance Computing (HPC) applications.
